Shiggs|MB | Has anyone here successfully ran any kind of MythTV setup in a virtual machine? The backend most importantly. | 14:10 |
Shiggs|MB | I have a working MythTV setup on an SSD in my i5-2500k desktop, and I can get it to mount an use the OS (Funtoo Linux) just fine, but when I try and get MythTV Backend stuff working, it doesn't seem to want to. i.e. I can't connect to it from the host side of the virtualization setup | 14:12 |
Shiggs|MB | I use VirtualBox 4.2.4 | 14:12 |
Shiggs|MB | feel free to msg me if you have any insights :) | 14:18 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, can you get to it from the guest OS? | 15:20 |
Shiggs|MB | I think so yeah | 15:24 |
Shiggs|MB | wait | 15:24 |
Shiggs|MB | I've tested this theory with the latest Mythbuntu, and within itself I can connect to the backend fine, but when I try from the host side it's all yeah no | 15:25 |
Shiggs|MB | and I think I might have effed up my database... Great. >_> | 15:27 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, I'm unsure exactly how you are trying to get to mythtv-setup from the host OS | 15:31 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, I've gotta leave for work, back in about 30 minutes | 15:31 |
Shiggs|MB | I gotta sleep | 15:32 |
Shiggs|MB | but I'll PM you how I want it setup | 15:32 |
gracent | Shiggs|MB: you need to set bridged net | 15:32 |
Shiggs|MB | I did | 15:33 |
gracent | can you mount a net share in the guest? | 15:34 |
Shiggs|MB | yep. I made a link to a physical hdd via vboxmanage | 15:35 |
gracent | can you ping host -> guest | 15:36 |
Shiggs|MB | now that I think about it I think it's a database issue | 15:36 |
Shiggs|MB | bind-address issue | 15:36 |
gracent | could be | 15:36 |
gracent | you do have to allow it iirc | 15:36 |
Shiggs|MB | good news though: my db is fine | 15:38 |
Shiggs|MB | <3 | 15:38 |
gracent | errm grats ;) | 15:38 |
Shiggs|MB | xD | 15:38 |
Shiggs|MB | I was messing around with msql stuff and I was so worried lol | 15:38 |
gracent | ahh, stick phpmyadmin on the machine and do a quick export before messing ;) | 15:39 |
Shiggs|MB | though I'm one step closer | 15:40 |
Shiggs|MB | tgm4883 and gracent here's how I want to run my backend: I want to virtualize it via VBox (it accessing my Linux SSD and recordings drive) on a Mac OS X host. I also want the ability to connect to the local backend from host to guest, to playback recordings that could be recorded to the recordings drive... I wanna do it like this because I have it setup how I like it, but I prefer to run OS Xas my main OS | 15:43 |
Shiggs|MB | can you guys follow that description/desired use? lol | 15:44 |
Shiggs|MB | I've almost got it | 15:44 |
Shiggs|MB | <_< | 15:44 |
gracent | well you need to add a user entry to mysql->users that's a copy of the one already there but with '%' for the host | 15:44 |
gracent | then reload privs | 15:44 |
Shiggs|MB | yeah I think I did that | 15:44 |
Shiggs|MB | you mean flush em?> | 15:44 |
gracent | u must yeah | 15:44 |
Shiggs|MB | hmm | 15:45 |
gracent | if you still can't connect watch for firewalls | 15:45 |
Shiggs|MB | I don't use any | 15:45 |
Shiggs|MB | though maybe there's one set in VBox? | 15:46 |
gracent | no but make sure you can ping guest->host | 15:46 |
Shiggs|MB | k | 15:46 |
Shiggs|MB | I'll try that now | 15:46 |
gracent | if not let me know guest + host ip's | 15:47 |
Shiggs|MB | well they are different... | 15:47 |
Shiggs|MB | host is 192.168.25.129, and guest is static'd to 192.168.25.180 via my router | 15:47 |
Shiggs|MB | booting VM now | 15:48 |
gracent | should be ok then | 15:48 |
gracent | how do you plan to record tv ooi? | 15:49 |
Shiggs|MB | ooi? | 15:49 |
gracent | out of interest | 15:49 |
Shiggs|MB | ah | 15:49 |
Shiggs|MB | HDHR via 'over the air' free broadcast cable :) | 15:49 |
gracent | lan job - k | 15:50 |
Shiggs|MB | and crap... I've had this problem before... mysql is loading before dhcpcd and it's hanging >_> | 15:50 |
Shiggs|MB | It's not Ubuntu though... it's Gentoo-based | 15:50 |
Shiggs|MB | Funtoo | 15:50 |
gracent | you should be ok, IO in vbox might get choked if the host is busy writing to disk | 15:50 |
gracent | ahh dunno that I'd check the Gentoo wiki | 15:51 |
Shiggs|MB | well it'll all be writing to a physical SATAII disk | 15:51 |
Shiggs|MB | as it has been when booted up physically | 15:51 |
gracent | k | 15:52 |
tgm4883 | stop | 16:06 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, what you described isn't running mythtv-setup from the host | 16:06 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, what you described, is the second most common thing to do with mythtv | 16:07 |
Shiggs|MB | ah | 16:07 |
Shiggs|MB | so I'm not the only one | 16:07 |
Shiggs|MB | xD | 16:07 |
tgm4883 | Correct, you aren't the only one who wants to use mythtv for what it was designed to | 16:07 |
Shiggs|MB | haha | 16:08 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, so just let me clarify, the guest OS is on the same network as the rest of your computers? | 16:08 |
Shiggs|MB | well all I really want is for the backend to be in a VM so I won't have to reboot | 16:08 |
Shiggs|MB | yep | 16:08 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, are you running Mythbuntu in that Guest OS? | 16:08 |
Shiggs|MB | well I was testing it yes | 16:09 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, Open up mythbuntu-control-centre, enable the MythTV service, reboot and your done | 16:09 |
tgm4883 | providing gracent didn't screw up your system | 16:09 |
Shiggs|MB | lol | 16:09 |
Shiggs|MB | well I have a working MythTV setup on Gentoo/Funtoo Linux on a physical SSD | 16:10 |
Shiggs|MB | that's giving me sql issues at | 16:10 |
Shiggs|MB | m | 16:10 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, then edit the upstart jobs to depend on what you need them to depend on | 16:10 |
tgm4883 | eg. networking/mysql/etc | 16:10 |
Shiggs|MB | and I can indeed ping the host from the VM | 16:21 |
Shiggs|MB | omg so close! I can connect from within the VM to the local-to-it backend! | 16:39 |
Shiggs|MB | gracent: ! | 16:43 |
Shiggs|MB | I'm getting close | 16:43 |
gracent | Shiggs|MB: Where you stuck? | 16:44 |
Shiggs|MB | I can get it to connect to itself, but not from the host yet | 16:44 |
tgm4883 | Shiggs|MB, in mythtv-setup, what do you have the IP addresses set to? | 16:45 |
Shiggs|MB | yeah I'm checking | 16:46 |
Shiggs|MB | it was set wrong | 16:47 |
Shiggs|MB | omg if this works I'll so gd happy | 16:47 |
gracent | lol | 16:47 |
Shiggs|MB | I'll be* | 16:49 |
Shiggs|MB | I also assigned more CPUs to it lol | 16:49 |
Shiggs|MB | I was wondering why it was so slow | 16:49 |
gracent | yeah that kills vm's in vbox - apparently | 16:50 |
Shiggs|MB | heh | 16:51 |
Shiggs|MB | it was sh*t slow | 16:51 |
Shiggs|MB | god | 16:51 |
Shiggs|MB | lol | 16:51 |
Shiggs|MB | it was waiting for a schema upgrade lock | 16:52 |
Shiggs|MB | o_O | 16:52 |
Shiggs|MB | hmm videos play within VM login to backend | 17:09 |
Shiggs|MB | but sorta sluggish | 17:09 |
Shiggs|MB | and no audio | 17:09 |
gracent | cya later chaps | 17:11 |
Shiggs|MB | lata | 17:12 |
hilo | hello, how can I see what firmware my HDPVR has on it? I ran the driver installer in windows, but it isn't clear if that only updated my driver or if the firmware as well | 23:13 |
superm1 | hilo: hdhomerun_config | 23:15 |
hilo | superm1, is that a utility? | 23:18 |
superm1 | hilo: yeah | 23:18 |
hilo | superm1, thanks | 23:18 |
superm1 | there is a GUI version too if you want | 23:18 |
hilo | cli is fine :) | 23:18 |
superm1 | in package hdhomerun-config-gui | 23:18 |
superm1 | kk | 23:18 |
hilo | that works with the hauppauge hd-pvr? It is not an hd homerun device. | 23:19 |
superm1 | oh hdpvr | 23:21 |
superm1 | sorry i read that as HDHR, been dealing with HDHR problems this last hour | 23:21 |
superm1 | i'm not sure on HDPVR how to do that | 23:21 |
hilo | no problem thanks anyway | 23:21 |
hilo | I have had this thing for 2 years and have yet to get it working in myth as a recorder | 23:22 |
superm1 | you might want to check mythtv-users and if no luck there on the ML | 23:22 |
hilo | left it on a shelf out of annoyance for a while. about to take another shot at it | 23:22 |
hilo | alright thanks | 23:22 |
