IndigentToad_Anyone have problems with xruns after installing a USB hub?03:03
holsteinIndigentToad_: if the irq's are configured in a way where that could promote some conflicts03:08
holsteini used to just get jack crashing with a touchpad... and once with a certain usb port03:08
IndigentToad_how do I check the irq's in terminal?03:09
holsteincat /proc/interrupts03:09
holsteini wouldnt have my audio interface on a USB hub03:09
IndigentToad_oh heavens no....the midi usb synth and interface are on native ports. just using the hub for aux devices (external HD, wireless mouse, printer)03:10
IndigentToad_ok, now how do I know if there's a conflict?03:11
IndigentToad_http://pastebin.com/e9PSShLD03:13
holsteinIndigentToad_: you'll see them listed.. but, if you remove the device and there are no issues, then you know its the problem03:13
IndigentToad_My hope was to figure out how to eliminate the conflicts. Issue is I'm using a laptop with dual book (US 12.4 and Vista) so I'm kinda limited on HD space. The hub is nice because I have a .5 TB external HD and I can save all my projects on it03:16
IndigentToad_dual boot...03:16
IndigentToad_my bad03:17
holsteinbusy for a bit... back in a few03:17
IndigentToad_kewl. thanks03:18
len-dtIndigentToad_, wow all of your USB ports share irqs04:06
IndigentToad_a mess.04:06
IndigentToad_a hot mess04:06
len-dtYa, I unplugged all my stuff and then plugged a memstick in each port I could see. I went to a terminal and ran dmesg.04:07
len-dtThen I could see which USB port it was.04:08
len-dtI found the two ports on the right side are both USB3, but on my netbook USB3 is at least on it's own irq, so I just use one of them04:08
len-dtI found the port on the left side shared with about 5 other things :P, so I use that for  my external drive04:09
len-dtIf I was going to put a hub in I would put it there.04:10
len-dtThe other thing to remember is that lap tops use USB ports for internal things too. For example webcam or SD port.04:10
len-dtUnloading the kernel module for the webcam may be helpful, and the wireless card may go through a USB port as well.04:11
IndigentToad_no webcam.04:11
IndigentToad_hmm...I'm going to have to read up on this a bit.04:12
IndigentToad_seems like a lot.04:12
len-dtI wasn't able to map all of mine, it seemed that some of the USB port numbers weren't even used at all.04:12
IndigentToad_should this be done in the bios or in the OS?04:12
len-dtDisabling the wireless in bios means you can't turn it off and on without rebooting, using moprobe and modprobe -r                       lets you load/unload from within the session04:14
len-dtIf you never use wireless do it in the bios.04:14
len-dtMy bios editor is pretty lame, I unload the kernel modules.04:16
IndigentToad_eh...didn't have this problem before i got this USB hub. My hope is to find a work around so I can keep the hub04:20
holsteinwell, you had conflicts though.. i would get a non usb sound card if possible04:20
holsteini dont trust usb with my audio anyways...04:20
Len-nbholstein, it's a laptop... not much choice04:23
holsteinyeah... unless you can do firewire04:24
Len-nbIndigentToad_, do you have a PC port?04:24
Len-nbIf you don't have firewire...04:25
IndigentToad_no firewire04:27
Len-nbPC port?04:27
IndigentToad_not sure what you mean by PC port04:27
XRS1try enabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS?04:27
IndigentToad_ZRS1 - I'll try that next time I reboot. What does it do?04:28
XRS1i notice a lot of problems with USB when that is not enabled. enabling it tends to fix stuff04:29
Len-nbOlder laptops had a port for adding wireless, ethernet, or whatever, there are firewire plugin boards too. It gets expensive fast though, firewire audio ports are not cheap.04:30
IndigentToad_As the name states (Indigent), we ain't going there04:30
Len-nbIf it was me I would stick with the USB port and go for a quiet machine04:30
Len-nbI stop networking, cron and friends, set the cpu to a constant speed04:31
IndigentToad_machine is about 4 years old and has to make it a while, so we're sticking with USB. Plus I'm just using a simple Lexicon interface04:31
Len-nbI have an ART dualUSB deal.04:32
XRS1any firmware updates available relating to USB?04:32
Len-nbThat would depend on the hardware.04:32
Len-nbI have an acer aspire and as far as I know none of the bios updates do anything for USB. Your's could be different04:33
IndigentToad_Dell Inspiron04:34
IndigentToad_...04:34
IndigentToad_Len how do you line the ART gear?04:34
IndigentToad_I have one of their little tiube preamps and it's fun04:35
Len-nbI like it. It has tube pres and a s/pdif output04:35
IndigentToad_does it record above 48k?04:35
Len-nbSo I can use it as a pre for my D66 on the desktop machine or an IF inthe netbook04:35
Len-nbIt is USB 1.1 so no.04:36
IndigentToad_ok04:37
IndigentToad_Like I said, the Tube MP studio has been nice to me. Makes a cheap mic sound a little warmer04:37
Len-nbI do mostly 44.1 actually.04:37
Len-nbThats what I like about the tube too04:38
IndigentToad_they make some higher end stuff that is impressive. but I'm more of a plug in guy...record it raw and let the bytes sort it out04:39
aaashow can i stop jack from the command line04:39
holsteinaaas: i would run 'ps aux | grep jack' and kill it04:51
aaasholstein ok thanks...i was wondering if theres a way I should be doing it through the daemon04:51
Len-nbIndigentToad_, the high end stuff is mostly adat or madi... the pci cards seem to be $500 +... a bit much for me.04:59
IndigentToad_don't need a PCI card on a laptop! so I am GOOD!05:01
IndigentToad_LOL05:01
Len-nbI would buy a better mic first I think. Even at 44.1k and 16 bit a better mic would make a difference05:01
Len-nbThough my desktop is 24bit.05:01
Len-nbaaas, you can also use jack_control stop or exit if you are running jackdbus.05:04
Len-nbjack_control has lots of things it can do.05:05
Len-nbYou can change latency and sample rate, set the back end.05:06
Len-nbIf you go to a terminal and type jack and then hit tab you will get a list of jack commandline stuff.05:07
Len-nbTo learn more about any of them type man and then the command name.05:08
aaasLen-nb thanks!05:08
Len-nbNP05:08
aaasLen-nb I want to know becasue I'm tyring to get jack to shut down gracefully when the computer goes to sleep05:08
aaaseverything breaks when it goes to hibernate05:08
aaasjack doesn't behave well05:09
Len-nbProbably exit would be best then.05:09
studio-user509hi05:15
studio-user509i have a question05:15
studio-user509can i update my BIOS while ubuntu is installed?05:16
holsteinstudio-user509: you can remove the hard drive and update the bios.. depending on how the manufacturer expects you to update it and what form the update is provided in05:17
holsteinnothing about ubuntu will prevent you from updating your bios05:17
holsteinIndigentToad_: have you been invited to #opensourcemusicians ?05:27
IndigentToad_I have not05:28
holsteinwell. check it out if you are bored.. or no one is talking to you here or in #ardour.. enjoy!.. gn05:29

studio-user496can i ask a question here??18:15
zequencestudio-user496: Yep18:17
zequenceAnd, you just did :)18:17
studio-user496cool!  haha your smart :P but iḿ not that smart i think because this is the third time im trying to install ubuntu studio but after the restart (after install)  it doesnt startup18:19
studio-user496and i cant find the answer18:19
studio-user496it says superblock everytime18:20
studio-user496and sector 1002003048436 etc.18:20
zequencestudio-user496: Tell me a little bit about the install. Dual boot? Wubi?18:21
zequenceAnd, if not Wubi, did you install the Grub boot loader?18:21
studio-user496usb but noapic18:21
studio-user496grub boot loader??:P18:22
XRS1take the USB stick out and let the computer boot its self?18:23
zequencestudio-user496: I assume you installed Ubuntu Studio onto the usb stick, or drive?18:23
XRS1what happens after you installed. you turn the computer on, walk us through the screens you see18:23
zequenceOr, did you install from usb and onto an internal drive?18:23
studio-user496i burned the ubuntu studio image to the usb stick18:24
studio-user496and tthan boot from the usbstick18:24
zequencestudio-user496: And then you installed onto internal hard drive?18:25
studio-user496yea18:25
studio-user496yes18:25
zequencestudio-user496: So, do you have more than one OS on the hard drive?18:25
studio-user496nono i first formatted18:26
zequencestudio-user496: nono, as in, you only have one OS on the internal hard drive (Ubuntu Studio)?18:26
studio-user496yes18:27
zequencestudio-user496: Do you have only one hard drive?18:27
studio-user496but it doesnt boot wel because off the errors18:27
studio-user496and i saw kernel panic error or something like that18:27
zequencestudio-user496: Only one hard drive :) ?18:28
studio-user496yes18:28
zequencestudio-user496: And when you installed, did you choose the option, that said something like erase everything, and install, etc18:29
studio-user496yes I chose that option18:29
studio-user4963x18:29
zequenceOk, so I think this is a very safe way of installing, and should work well. Perhaps there is a problem with the hard drive?18:29
zequenceIs it old?18:30
studio-user496no its very new :P18:30
studio-user496never fell or something like that18:30
studio-user496can I perform a diskcheck?18:30
studio-user496in ubuntu?18:31
zequencestudio-user496: Did you try booting with the live image, and then mounting the internal hard drive?18:33
zequenceThis is not a problem specific to Ubuntu Studio, and I'm afraid we probably don't have people who can help on this specific problem. So, it'll be anyones guess what is wrong18:34
XRS1is this system known to be a good working system?18:34
len-dtIts my daily use desktop18:34
XRS1no problems with RAM or CPU cache?18:34
studio-user496I just downloaded a zip package with that grub files18:35
XRS1i say verify the md5. the download might have been corrupted18:35
studio-user496and I see i have none of that on my disk ?18:35
zequencestudio-user496: What do you mean? How are you examining your disk?18:36
zequencestudio-user496: If the kernel boots, that means you have GRUB installed18:36
studio-user496o18:36
zequenceYou wouldn't get kernel panic messages without GRUB being installed18:36
studio-user496but maybe it doesnt18:36
XRS1no you cant see grub, it exists in the Master Boot Record of the hard drive. i would suggest Boot Repair, except you are booting. its just panacing18:36
studio-user496o ok18:36
zequencestudio-user496: Were you able to mount the disk from the live image?18:36
studio-user496from the usb stick maybe18:37
zequencestudio-user496: That is, first you boot into the live image (trying out Ubuntu Studio), and then go to file manager, click the Hard Drive to mount it18:37
XRS1i say verify the md5. the download might have been corrupted18:37
XRS1verify the MD5 of the ISO you are installing from18:37
studio-user492sorry i missed the last things you suggested because i accidently closed my browser18:39
XRS1i say verify the md5. the download might have been corrupted18:39
XRS1verify the MD5 of the ISO you are installing from18:39
XRS1should be an option to do it when you have the installer USB inserted at boot. (but iv had that util tell me its good when in fact it was bad, but thats only happened once in a lifetime)18:40
studio-user492i think i try rebooting18:41
studio-user492maybe this time it works well18:42
studio-user492and if it doesnt i think i boot from the usb18:42
XRS1another option, dont know if its worth a try but; i never trust Ubiquity (the installer)  i use gparted to first format the hard drive (in the "Start menu -> system -> gparted.) if you have 4GB of more you can format the entire drive as "/" in ext4 format and skip SWAP, then in the installer "Choose Something Else" use the formatting you set up and make sure grub is set to install to whatever your drive is labeled as (EG: sda)18:46
XRS14 GB RAM  or more*18:46
len-dt+1 even with lower ram I always do manual. There was a problem at one time of grub getting installed on the wrong drive.18:47
len-dtOn my netbook, I use a USB drive to install on. Some times when it boots the USB stick the internal drive is sda and sometimes the external drive is sda and the internal is sdb18:48
MossMan_can anybody help me with a seemingly simple problem? i have no brightness control on my fresh install of ubuntu studio23:35
MossMan_any ideas why that could be?23:35
nvon my Evo n610c, the brightness is BIOS managed and i cant controll it in linux23:37
nvretarded powermanagement issue. screen dims to 80% by default when unplugged, Fn keys not standards compliant23:38
MossMan_so it's more complicated than just a simple fix...23:44
MossMan_you'd think that vendors could find a way to make brightness standards compliant23:44
nvhopefully that is not the issue, thats just the only time i have seen the problem23:44
MossMan_i guess not23:44
nvno that is just an old laptop that uses a PS/2 connection23:44
MossMan_i see23:45
nvmight try asking in #xubuntu23:46
