xixorObsidian1723: what is that greenlight/redlight widget?01:40
Obsidian1723It's for monitoring01:41
Obsidian1723One of many such things I have going.01:41
xixor use the system monitor on a hidden panel on the right-most side of the screen01:43
Obsidian1723I just have all of my monitoring stuff on one of my 4 virtual desktops01:43
xixorah, I see01:44
xixorso what do you monitor?01:44
Obsidian1723logs, packet datagrams, processes, ports01:44
xixorI don't monitor anything01:45
xixorI haven't found plasmoids and widgets to be especially stable01:46
Obsidian1723mine seem to be.01:47
Obsidian1723sysklogd is a nice tool for monitoring with.01:48
xixorThat just watches logfiles and emails you or something, doesn't it?01:48
Obsidian1723yeah01:49
xixorI run a debian server, I used to have a bunch of automatic tools for watching the log files installed that would email me on every ssh failed auth attempt, etc01:49
xixoreventually, I just disabled them01:49
Obsidian1723well, if you aren't going to watch logs, verify info, no point in monitoring.01:50
Obsidian1723Hopefully you didnt leave ssh on port 22.01:50
xixorlol, of course I did01:50
Obsidian1723Just moving that port will save a lot of hassles.01:50
xixorchanging the default ssh port is just security theater01:52

unheedingit's a  widget, called "Window Menubar"01:59
aj041191i see, what about this "be::shell" the are talking?02:00
aj041191im searching for it but to know avail, i dont know how to compile sources, do i need to?02:01
aj041191and also this bespin02:01
Obsidian1723xixor: I would disagree.02:02
Obsidian1723Security theater is taking off your shoes at the airport, which really does nothing to help make you secure. Moving the ssh port in and of itself does not make you secure either, however, if you monitor ssh both before and after moving the port off of 22, you will see a lot less traffic hitting on it after the port move. I cannot say the same real world demonstartion can be said about shoe removal.02:04
xixorObsidian1723: Yes, but seeing attempts on port 22 isn't a big deal02:04
Obsidian1723Moving the port alone is not enough, but it is a huge start02:04
Obsidian1723xixor: Anytime someone probes a machine or attempts to gai naccess, I see it as a threat and a problem.02:05
xixorYou've eliminated the users who can't use nmap.  Those "hackers" wouldn't have been able to get in your box anyway.  A simple nmap is going to determine the new ssh port. Your system isn't any more secure than it was before02:05
Obsidian1723Again, that's part of it. Using portknockd helps, limiting what users can assh in helps, setting up throttling in iptables and ip6tables helps, using properly configured daemons like denyhosts and fail2ban helps, likewise with a good demarc protection.02:06
xixorIn the security theater analogy, it's the equivalent of taking away nail trimmers at the Xray scanner02:06
xixorYour patting yourself on the back for eliminating a non-threat02:07
Obsidian1723If you use portknockd, the port won't show as open unless you send the proper sequence to it.02:07
xixorsure, I would agree with that02:07
Obsidian1723xixor: to each their own opinion, but no back patting going on here... you consider it a non-threat if someone probes your machine, I consider that a threat. Different mindset between us.02:08
xixorany machine on the internet is going to be probed02:08
Obsidian1723Someone goes probing around my house, I consider that a threat too..02:08
Obsidian1723and I likewise have protection there as well.02:09
xixorI used to run portknockd, used to change the default ssh port, and a variety of things02:10
xixorend of the day, I didn't feel anymore secure for the amount of hastle02:10
Obsidian1723If security was easy, then it really wouldn't be security.02:11
xixorI didn't feel like my security was increased.  ssh isn't a common vector for intrusion02:11
xixorwhen you're running a public facing web/sql server and other network services02:11
Obsidian1723and security isn't just a piece of hardware, software, or configuration, it's a way of living, thinking, acting, and being on a 24x7x365 basis.02:11
Obsidian1723Well, on every box I've come across running ssh on 22, they are getting naikled pretty hard. I'd say that it's proetty common. Maybe not as common as say port 25 for mail relays, but common enough to warrant changing it along with some other measures.02:12
Obsidian1723and when you are running a pubically-known and accessed box like a web server, all the MORE reason to secure it vs a home client pc.02:13
xixorthose machines are still getting hammered on other ports02:13
Obsidian1723Well, the least amount they can get hammered on, the better.02:14
xixorseeing a failed root login attempt on port 22 on ssh, sure, it looks alarming02:14
Obsidian1723Ive seen a lot more than that...02:14
xixorthey're still getting hammered though02:14
xixoryou're just not seeing it in the logs02:14
Obsidian1723Well, I have my box to drop packets not reject them, so they can try to hammer, but nothing will happen if the box doesn't respond to it.02:15
xixoryes02:15
xixorI think I had it set to block all traffic from that IP after 10 incorrect logins or something like that02:16
Obsidian1723I do monitor that too btw.02:16
Obsidian1723So I do see dropped packets.02:16
xixormy website, www.xixor.net, demands the strictest of security protocols02:16
Obsidian1723I have mine tighter than that, but yeah, throttling helps.02:16

xixorSTIG?02:17
=== unheeding is now known as pinkie_pie
Obsidian1723yeah, it's a security implementation.02:17
xixorno02:17
Obsidian1723http://iase.disa.mil/stigs/02:17
xixorI haven't been that rigorous with security for a few years02:17
Obsidian1723hehe I have. My last job was with a defense contractor. I just let the company for another one in the IT Security field.02:18
xixoris this one of those network scanners that automatically tries a bunch of the common exploits on your system, and keeps a database of them?02:18
xixorcool02:18
Obsidian1723Yeah, fun times having federal agents investigate you all the time. whooo hoo02:19
Obsidian1723I won't miss that.02:20
xixorObsidian1723: well, that sounds pretty intense.  Definitely outside the range of security experience I have had02:28
Obsidian1723yeah its beyond what most people deal with, but it';s made me extra anal about security as well.02:29
Obsidian1723Usually the less one knows about security, the more secure they feel, but the less they really are. I'm not saying that about you, but about people in general. When one understands it, they go down the rabbit hole and see all of the flaws, realizing nothing is ever 100% secure, just more securable than other things are.02:31
Obsidian1723It's why I refuse to use a lot of technologies people use. If I didn't have to have a cell phone, I wouldn't.02:31
Obsidian1723I don't do or use any social media, texting, no Internet access on my cell phone, no facebook, twitter, four square, linked in, myspace, etc.02:32
xixorI'm security concious, I think I'm more security aware than most linux users.  I've deployed some clusters, and read about linux security quite a bit.  I use social networking and online services, usually sign up with a secondary email address, and a fake birthdate02:35
Obsidian1723but you do it from the same machine that you do other stuff on?02:35
xixorsure02:35
xixormy resources are limited02:35
Obsidian1723do you login to facebook and leave it open while you brose the web?02:36
xixorprobably02:36
Obsidian1723well, one way to better protect yourself would be to setup a VM and do all of that stuff from there.02:36
xixorand then I notice that some news site wants me to comment from my facebook profile, so then I logoff02:36
Obsidian1723If you browse the web while using facebook, they track it.02:36
xixorsure, they track it02:39
xixorhow else will they know how to give me advertisements that I want to see?02:39
xixorwhat am I, supposed to look at advertisements that are drawn from a statistical likelihood model of what I might like?02:40
xixoraj041191: try yakuake02:40
xixorObsidian1723: I will repeat what I just said02:41
xixorsure, they track it02:41
xixorhow else will they know how to give me advertisements that I want to see?02:41
xixorwhat am I, supposed to look at advertisements that are drawn from a statistical likelihood  model of what I might like?02:41
Obsidian1723hehe avoid advertisments?02:42
xixorI have an ethical objection to that02:42
xixorthe alternative is for online content sources to go to a subscription model, which I'd rather not have02:44
xixorObsidian1723: what do you do now?02:48
xixorObsidian1723: if you can disclose the details without having to kill me02:48
Obsidian1723I work for a VAR, in the IT Sec field.02:54
xixorcool02:54
xixorI work for myself, doing geoscience consulting, programming, R&D02:55
xixorObsidian1723: I do a lot of high performance scientific computing.. I cut my security teeth setting up and securing small linux "beowolf" style clusters for solving geoscience problems02:59
xixorback in the 1999-2002 days when everything was "beowolf" this, and "beowolf" that02:59
Obsidian1723right on. I remember.03:00
xixorbut I was self-taught, and the computers were fairly low-risk... low-risk in the sense that, it wasn't defense/government/corporate secrets on them03:02
xixorjust a bunch of geoscience data03:02
xixorand by geoscience data, I mean, absolutely raw geoscience data.  Measurements of electromagnetic fields measured somewhere in the world.  Even the people who collect them have trouble figuring them out.  The value to someone stealing them is nill.03:02
Obsidian1723right on.. soundsx like good stuff03:03
xixorObsidian1723: yeah.  I write HPC computing codes, developing new and innovative algorithms for finding mineral deposits.  http://www.xixor.net/shot1.png03:04
xixorObsidian1723: here is a screenshot I like, of a "small" problem, 12 threads at 100% on a dual-hexcore machie, only 16Gb of ram allocated03:04
Obsidian1723right on....03:05
Obsidian1723everyone has their areas of expertise eh?03:05
xixoryes03:06
xixorI would like to run my own secure mail server03:07
xixorI've used linux for 16 years now, and mail server administration seems like the only thing that hasn't improved in that time03:07
Obsidian1723yeah, I started back in 1996 using Linux, but 1978 for using PCs in general.03:08
xixorCool.  I'm 31.  Started linux in 1996/97 with redhat, but quickly moved to debian.  Started programming in 94 with Turbo Pascal, 95/96 started programming in C/C++.  Started using computers with commodore 64s at about 8603:09
xixorWhat were the pre-80's PCs like?03:09
xixorCommodore 64's and Appple IIe's are about the first computers I can remember03:10
Daz646Hello everyone, having a little issue with flash player when on youtube. I  seem to crash mostly when using full screen mode.03:13
Daz646Anybody else getting this issue?03:13
xixorDaz646: I have trouble with full screen flash videos as well03:18
xixorDaz646: I'm using google chrome.  It doesn't crash, but it won't play them full screen03:19
xixorDaz646: If it makes you feel any better, almost everyone on linux, and MacOSX has problems with flash.03:19
Daz646xixor: with chrome i think the picture just freezes?03:19
xixorDaz646: yes, exactly, just freezes03:19
Daz646xixor: on mozilla it plays for a while then freezes03:19
xixorDaz646: flash is an inferior technology.  The sooner we put the energy of getting flash to work various places into replacing flash, the better03:20
Daz646xixor: i purged and then reinstalled and that sorted the issue out for a day but now back to normal.03:20
Daz646xixor: Ok, im not complaining i went to linux from windows for a reason :)03:20
xixorflash videos look like shit anyway, does going full screen gain you anything?03:20
Daz646xixor: Yeah depending on which monitor i use. 1080p looks a bit off but 720 is fine.03:21

walexAlarm: try it and see.09:49
Alarmmy question is mainly if i can damage my os with that or if i can easily roll back09:50
TorchAlarm: this can seriously damage your installation especially if you're unexperienced with kernel modules and drivers under linux10:10
TorchAlarm: so unless you know exactly what you're doing, don't do it ;-)10:10
Alarmwell i don't but someone has to fix it :D10:11
TorchAlarm: what?10:11
Alarmi don't really know what i am doing, i will read some installation instructions how to do it .10:12
TorchAlarm: if the code provided by realtek or whoever only works for 3.0.x, this will get messy10:12
Torch(it _might_ just work, but it's unlikely)10:13
Alarmi see10:13
TorchAlarm: imho it's also advisable to not build and install kernel modules manually if it can be avoided in general. makes for a cleaner system and easier updates.10:14
Alarmi just try to find a solution with the realtek chipset . my signal reception seems like 50% lower than on windows, i also see the download rates being redeculous , something like 5-10kb/s10:15

=== forlornhope is now known as Forlornhope22
douglhey BluesKaj - how are you?16:03
BluesKajfine thanks  dougl , and you ?16:04
douglvery well - thanks for asking :)16:04
douglpretty quiet in here... I don't have anything timestamped so not sure if chat was recent or not.16:05
* dougl still has 404 errors in sources list and k-mail has 2 of every folder containing identical emails in both sets of folders.16:07
TheLordOfTimedougl, the sources.list 404s mean the PPA is not supporting the given OS or something, but that's usually dependent on the 404s.16:08
douglTheLordOfTime, ok, thanks - hard to correct?16:09
TheLordOfTimedougl, depends.  pastebin the complete output including errors, i'll take a look16:11
TheLordOfTime(usually easy to fix though)16:11
TheLordOfTime(depending on the issues)16:11
douglTheLordOfTime, http://pastebin.com/fg8g4ffs is the errors... will do the complete list, was not sure if it was of any interest - sec.16:15
TheLordOfTimedougl, give me the sources.list, and the items in sources.list.d/*16:16
TheLordOfTimesince its likely the PPAs are in the folder i mentioned16:16
douglTheLordOfTime, http://pastebin.com/L2rWLEJL is the complete output of apt-get update... looking for sources.list16:18
TheLordOfTime/etc/apt/sources.list, and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* (everything in that folder)16:19

TheLordOfTimeremove those two files16:23
douglTheLordOfTime tsimpson do I just delete the offending items or how do I correct?16:23
TheLordOfTimethen do sudo apt-get update16:23
TheLordOfTimeand see if 404s are back16:23
douglTheLordOfTime, ok16:23
yofelapt should ignore entries in .save files though16:24
BluesKajdougl, no need for a ppa for xbmc16:24
yofel(iirc)16:24
tsimpsonyou can ignore the .save, apt only read the .list files16:24
TheLordOfTimeyofel, still not necessary if you remove the .list :P16:24
yofelwell, it is a backup file16:24
tsimpsonor use the package manager and just disable the PPA source from there, no need to delete anything ;)16:25
tsimpsonor edit via the command line and comment them out16:25
douglHEY!!! thanks guys :) I have been pretending not to obsess about those 404's for a few weeks now (they were secretly bugging the crap out of me) and now they are gone...16:28

douglhow do you remove? - sudo apt-get purge linphone16:50
kyubotsuproprietary amd driver made fonts look quite horribly here..   :-/16:51
BluesKajpurge if you like but apt-get remove works16:52
douglgotcha BluesKaj - thanks16:52
kyubotsuthe system is working nicely otherwise.. ; i just finished a fresh install. memory usage is also lower than with unity,16:56
kyubotsuAND , rekonq is finally working out of the box16:57
* dougl is happy for kyubotsu16:59
douglNice when it all works out :)16:59
BluesKajodd , moving some media files from wife's W7 pc to my external drive ,, the speed started out at 6MiB/s for about 20 mins, now it's dropped to 2,2 and doesn't go any faster , the cpu is working overtime at 98% for some reason ...looking at all the processes , it seems to add up , butr all the process needed for simple transfer of files16:59
kyubotsurekonq was next to useless to me . now it actually works as i expect it16:59
BluesKajbut why all the processes17:00
BluesKajkyubotsu, rekonq is next to useless for everyone17:00
xixorBluesKaj: is it an NTFS drive?17:00
BluesKajthe source drive is , the external is ext417:01
BluesKajxixor,^17:01
xixorI remember reading that NTFS drivers can eat up CPU... not sure though17:01
yofelthey can17:01
kyubotsuBluesKaj: that's what i USED to think ..  ; much better nowadays, at least for me17:02
yofelI once imported a mysql dump in a WUBI install, the bottleneck was mount.ntfs CPU usage17:02
xixorBluesKaj: are these lots of small files?  Or a few number of large files?17:03
BluesKajI originally used NTFS on the external , but it was too slow and since most pcs in this house are ext4 , the ewxternal backup should be as well17:04
BluesKajxixor, my music files , mostly wav , some mp317:05
kyubotsuunity does work better with the proprietary AMD driver enabled though...17:05
BluesKajat this reate it's going to take 12 hrs17:06
kyubotsulike FLAC files? that's some hefty media you're transfering there17:06
BluesKajI should have plugged the drive directly into wife's pc17:06
xixorBluesKaj: as a test, I am copying a movie file from an NTFS drive on my desktop, to a 500Mb external 2.5" 5400rpm laptop hard drive, I get an average of 30MiB/s17:08
BluesKajkyubotsu, I'm not a mp3 fan , i have lot's of room so I copy cds directly without any conversion ...I don't understand ppl stripping 80% of the data from music files to make them fit on a pc17:08
BluesKajxixor, over your network , ot directly connected17:09
BluesKajor17:09
BluesKaj?17:09
douglflac?17:10
xixorBluesKaj: directly connected over USB 2.017:10
xixorBluesKaj: I get the same speeds when transfering files between machines using Samba over wifi17:10
BluesKajxixor, I'm moving them over our local network17:10
kyubotsuBluesKaj: portability. although most modern devices tend to count in gigabytes, most people prefer sacrifice some fidelity for quantity17:11
BluesKajkyubotsu, well, i'm an audio guy and audio quality comes first17:11
BluesKajI don't walk around with hps on blasting in my ears ...prefer to do that in my easy chair :)17:12
xixorBluesKaj: I just copied a directory of mp3s from my samba nas storage, to the attached NTFS USB 2.0 hard drive, got 13MiB/s17:13
BluesKajxixor,  and how does that help me ?17:13
xixorBluesKaj: it tells you that with a similar setup someone gets 6x the speed17:14
BluesKajI don't have NAS17:14
BluesKajaamof I think I ruined a mobo trying to install nas17:14
xixorthe NAS in this instance is just a usb hard disk attached to my consumer router.  Compared to a computer sharing files, its pretty under powered17:15
douglis there such a thing as mouse trails on kubuntu - still googling for the mac17:15
BluesKajwell, good for you , but I don't have usb capability (server) on my router17:16
BluesKajxixor,^17:16
xixorBluesKaj: this is offtopic, perhaps you should take this to #kubuntu-offtopic17:16
BluesKajwhy i'm transferring files from windows to kubuntu and it should be faster , I think that's an issue for here17:17
kyubotsumy comparison between 128 to 320 didnt yield much improvement at the headphone level . so they were right, 128 kbit/s is more practical for portability [read, internet : streaming]17:19
=== crazydiamond is now known as CrazyD1am0nd
avihayI get 5.7-6.1MB/s on samba and 5.3-5.4MB/s on sftp (ssh)17:19
kyubotsuobviously your case is different to say the least , BluesKaj17:20
BluesKajkyubotsu, I avoid mp3 or other compressed music as much as possible17:20
kyubotsunoted. just saying17:20
BluesKajdougl, FLAC = Free Audio Lossless Codec  ,,it's basically a compresased Wav file without any data loss17:22
CrazyD1am0ndHello, Newb here and loving Kubuntu so far. I have a strange annoyance though, and cannot figure out what is causing it. Occasionally ny screen will FLASH a pixulated image of a zoomed in part of my desktop17:22
kyubotsueven then, 320 kbit/s mp3 's are still quite portable considering the 8 gigs of most ipods .. or other17:22
CrazyD1am0ndDesktop effects enabled17:22
BluesKajkyubotsu, 8G holds alot of wav or flac files as well17:23
kyubotsuyah, just read cd quality is rated at 1,411.2 kbit/s , so at 320 you still have a pretty decent conversion. not that 'am trying to sell you anything anyway17:25
CrazyD1am0ndIs this the support channel?17:26
kyubotsu!patience17:26
ubottuDon't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. You can search https://help.ubuntu.com/ http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ or http://www.kubuntuforums.net/ while you wait.17:26
Tm_TCrazyD1am0nd: sounds like display driver bug, what display card & drivers you're using?17:28
kyubotsuCrazyD1am0nd: it's obvious you're having video issues.. i'd start with reinstalling the driver17:28
Tm_Tkyubotsu: reinstall most likely won't solve anything (:17:29
CrazyD1am0ndThat was a nightmare to get working.. I have an ATI HD 7770 2GB and the drivers are ATI fir GL17:30
CrazyD1am0ndFrom the 'Additional drivers'17:30
kyubotsuTm_T: "most likely" there is still a 3% chance in there i'd take17:30
kyubotsu:-P17:30
CrazyD1am0ndEverything runs so smoothly now though, Games, MKv's Blu-Rays etc.. Where as before I had so much screen tearing and odd behavior17:31
kyubotsuyah, i JUST uninstalled the proprietary driver here . fonts looked horrible with it enabled [i have an ATI too]17:31
CrazyD1am0ndLast thing I want to do is mess around with the drivers again. I have Kubuntu running in a way now that I am very happy with. Last time I tried messing with drivers my whole screen got messed up and a reinstall was needed17:34
kyubotsuwell. then test it without effects and see what you get17:35
CrazyD1am0ndGood thinking, Thanks very much.. Whats the difference between the 2 drivers I can choose in 'Additional drivers' One is 'fireGL' and the other 'ATI drivers'17:36
kyubotsui say, perhaps the trade off is worth the small annoyance of the flickering .. but right now none has a good answer to solve your issue17:36
kyubotsuCrazyD1am0nd: or, that..17:37
kyubotsutrial and error is my favorite method17:38
kyubotsululz17:38
Tm_TCrazyD1am0nd: FireGL is AMD/ATI product line for professional graphics acceleration, it's not what your device is (:17:40
CrazyD1am0ndOk thanks very much. Its an Intermittant problem (the worst to diagnose) So I will keep an eye on when it happends next and see if I can narrow it down to what applications are open etc. I am really enjoying Linux finally there seems to be a good Distro and support for gaming in the near future, I appreciate all your support and the work the community does.17:40
Tm_TCrazyD1am0nd: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI_FireGL17:40
CrazyD1am0ndThanks Tm_T17:41
Tm_TCrazyD1am0nd: so the other driver would be right one for you17:41
CrazyD1am0ndI think I did originally have that driver but tried the other due to tearing problems, whilch I later solved through trial and error. Thanks again. Will enable the ATI driver and keep a close watch. Goodbye Windows, Hello Kubuntu :)17:43
