simondbullHey guys, just wanted ask a question. I am running Ubuntu 12.10, and am suffering from regular lock-ups (around 2 a day). What usually happens is that Firefox or Empathy force quits, and then I am randomly logged out. When I log back in, X dies. Any suggestions about what may be causing the issue? It would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Simon.17:27

directhexdpkg accepts the --purge flag for packages not currently installed18:37

popeyshould be able to get that from /var/log/dpkg.log18:38
popeyif it was recently removed18:38
Gargoylehmm. It's not just log / config files!18:38
Gargoylethis seems to be a lot of "leftovers" even for just a normal "remove". http://pastie.org/private/nvmji1t8y3khbjmqtpmo2a is this standard?18:39
popeyapache2 isnt the package name18:40
popeyyou may have something like apache2-mpm-prefork installed18:41
Daraelpopey: Given that it was apt-get removed, I'd use /var/log/apt/history.log rather than /var/log/dpkg.log since it gives all relevant package names at once.18:41
directhex/usr/sbin/apache2 is provided by one of the apache back-end packages18:41

X3NWhat's the status of GNOME on ubuntu? is it a supported option at all?20:40
brobostigon!info ubuntu-gnome-desktop20:45
lubotu3ubuntu-gnome-desktop (source: ubuntu-gnome-meta): The Ubuntu GNOME Remix desktop system. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.2 (quantal), package size 3 kB, installed size 26 kB20:45
brobostigonX3N: look up ubuntu gnome remix.20:46
brobostigon!info gnome-shell20:46
lubotu3gnome-shell (source: gnome-shell): graphical shell for the GNOME desktop. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.5.91-0ubuntu1 (quantal), package size 342 kB, installed size 933 kB20:46
popeyX3N, jbicha is working on a gnome based flavour20:47
X3Nhmm20:47
X3Nit's a bit odd that there are thing like gnome-shell in the main repos but it won't really work correctly20:48
brobostigonX3N: i have tested it, it does work correctly, including gdm3 etc.20:48
X3Nbrobostigon: from the main repos ?20:49
brobostigonX3N: yep.20:49
X3NWhat about things like the indicator? is there an gnome-shell extension to support that?20:49
brobostigonX3N: define, indicator?20:50
X3Nhttp://unity.ubuntu.com/projects/appindicators/20:51
X3Nthere are a bunch of applications that use that either natively or have been patched in ubuntu20:52
brobostigonX3N: those are designed for unity, they wont work in gnome-shell. that i know of.20:52
X3Nso you can't use gtk-recordmydesktop for instance?20:53
brobostigonX3N: last time i tried that, here in debian, with gnome-shell it did work, yes.20:54
X3Non debian it would work, because it's not patched20:54
brobostigonX3N: so i see no reason why it shouldnt work.20:54
brobostigonX3N: i have ubuntu 12.10 here, with gnome-shell 3.6, however havent tried it, so couldnt tell you.20:55
ali1234X3N: unity allows old style tray icons too21:04
ali1234but apps have to be whitelisted21:04
ali1234also gnome-panel still works fine21:05
ali1234it fully supports both systray and indicators21:05
ali1234gnome remix is not much better than the standard desktop tbh21:06
ali1234no U1, no compiz, no indicators21:06
X3NI read that with gnome-panel you need to add the applet / indicator-applet-complete21:07
ali1234yeah, it's installed by default21:07
ali1234it's part of gnome-fallback-session21:07
X3Ndo you know if you have to add it manually or not?21:08
ali1234add what?21:08
X3Nthe panel applet21:08
ali1234no, it's on panel by default21:08
ali1234it doesn't work properly on 12.04 though21:08
ali1234you need 12.1021:08
X3Nah21:08
X3Nall a bit of a mess21:10
ali1234yeah21:10
ali1234for best results you have to use compiz 0.8, even on 12.10 there's problems21:13
X3NI was doing detection of whether or not to use the indicator based on whether the library for it is installed, but if people are switching between unity and gnome that kind of goes to pot21:16
ali1234yes21:26
ali1234however, there is a way to do it21:26
ali1234i don't know what it is, but there is a way21:26
ali1234and as mentioned, gnome-panel fully supports both ways at the same time21:27
ali1234similar related bug, consider this "how not to do it" : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-datetime/+bug/107431421:28

d3ngarHello there21:34
d3ngarI seem to have a problem with my VPN server21:34
d3ngarIt doesn't seem to be listening21:34
d3ngarAlbeit running21:35
dwatkinsd3ngar: can you check if the ports are in use by the process, or whether it's possible to access those ports through the firewall (if applicable)?21:44
d3ngarNo, they were simply not listed in netstat -anp | grep pptpd21:45
d3ngarOr the one port21:45
dwatkinsdoes fuser $PORT/tcp (replacing as appropriate) show the VPN process listening on that one?21:45
d3ngarit is now21:49
d3ngarI uninstalled pptpd21:49
d3ngarand reinstalled21:49
d3ngarI can see the port listening now21:49
d3ngarBut I still can't connect21:50
d3ngarThe log file is not at all helpful21:50
dwatkinscan you telnet to the port and at least confirm it's listening from the external system?21:51
d3ngarhttp://pastebin.com/p18S9zGc21:51
dwatkinsi.e. that it's accepting connections21:51
d3ngarYes21:51
d3ngarIt is accepting connections21:51
dwatkinsThe format of wtmp is a little hoopy, I think 'last' reads it.21:52
dwatkinsok, so it's either a client or server configuration issue, assuming it's the right process that's listening.21:52
d3ngarI guess when telnet says it's connected, it is connected?21:53
d3ngartelnet host 1723?21:53
dwatkinsactually, no21:53
d3ngar:/21:53
dwatkinsit is connected when you get a response, or can send text, iirc21:53
d3ngarSorry?21:54
dwatkinssorry, I'm not familiar with any vpn software, so all I can do is help on the IP/tcp side21:54
d3ngarhow do I get a response?21:54
dwatkinsno idea, send it some text perhaps21:54
dwatkinsif it just sits there telling you the control character, it may not be connected21:55
d3ngarI keep getting connection closed by foreign host21:55
dwatkinswhat's between you and the machine in question, routers? firewalls?21:55
d3ngarRouter, yes21:55
d3ngarBut the port is open21:55
d3ngar(it used to work, so I'm surprised to have difficulties now)21:55
d3ngarI doubt it's the router21:55
dwatkinshmm, what changed?21:55
d3ngarSystem21:55
d3ngarI tried upgrading to 12.0421:56
d3ngarBut there were some problems and I ended up re-installing the whole system21:56
dwatkinsah ok21:56
dwatkinsin that case, it's most likely the VPN configuration on the server.21:56
d3ngarI also get a connection closed error from the local host21:56
d3ngar(That's via telnet)21:57
d3ngarWhy is there no log, I wonder?21:57
dwatkinsnot even anything recently appended in /var/log?21:57
d3ngarI'm not familiar with that file21:58
d3ngarI don't have it, apparently21:58
d3ngar/var/log?21:58
dwatkinscd /var/log ; ls -lrt21:58
dwatkinsreverse temporal order21:58
dwatkinsif a logfile in there is being written to, it should show a timestamp of when you connected, or the syslog might be being used21:59
d3ngaryes21:59
d3ngarIt's the wtmp file22:00
d3ngarBut there is nothing notable in there22:00
dwatkinshmm, that file just contains login records22:00
d3ngarIt has the gibberish in there that I posted to pastebin22:01
dwatkinsyeah, see the output of 'last' for human readable format, iirc22:01
d3ngarWhen I used last, there was only a message:22:01
d3ngarwtmp begins Mon Nov 12 16:11:32 201222:01
d3ngarOtherwise the file is empty22:02
dwatkinsThat's strange, my 'last' output begins with a note about my current login. Are you logged in?22:02
d3ngarlogged in?22:02
d3ngarOn the remote host?22:02
d3ngarYes, via SSH22:02
dwatkinsStrange that it's not being updated, I'm running 11.04; not sure if it's changed or something.22:03
d3ngarmmm22:03
