=== Kerbero is now known as Kerbero[afk] [05:24] morning all [07:01] ohi Frankko welcome to ubuntu-za [07:01] hi psydroid [08:13] hi Kilos [08:39] modem steal for a while === Kerbero[afk] is now known as Kerbero [10:04] hi superfly and others [10:09] Haaiu [10:09] hey superfly i got ians 500G drive fixed and installed 12.04 kubuntu from the dvd i burned with k3b and i didnt get the black screen [10:09] hi Vince-0 [10:10] the desktop effects fault the sick install had [10:10] same pc [10:11] Kilos: that's good news [10:16] ya i wonder whats the diffs though? same iso [10:17] but still dont see modem. sigh [10:17] grrr [11:11] Yo. [11:12] Neither my tablet nor my printer/scanner works in Ubuntu [11:12] So I have to reinstall that other disgusting OS, Windows, alongside Ubuntu. [11:12] But apparently this will destroy the Grub or something? [11:15] printer make and model? [11:21] My Printer is a Lexmark X8350 [11:21] It's not compatible. [11:21] I've researched and researched [11:21] Short of looking up how to change something in Ubuntu's code [11:21] Which I'd rather not do. At least not on my own [11:22] Maaz google setting up a Lexmark X8350 on ubuntu 12.04 [11:22] Kilos: "HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters/LexmarkPrinters - Ubuntu" https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters/LexmarkPrinters :: "PRINT HEAD » system-config-printer" http://cyberelk.net/tim/software/system-config-printer/ :: "Lexmark support questions and answers" http://www.helpowl.com/Lexmark/Questions :: "Gutenprint Printer Drivers" [11:22] http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/ [11:22] try this one https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters/LexmarkPrinters [11:23] is it plugged in? [11:23] Not at the moment. I figured it was pointless since it doesn't actually work. [11:23] Ubuntu sees it, just like it sees my tablet, but it won't work. [11:23] its just drivers needed [11:24] http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=139&t=98347&p=254149#p254149 [11:24] There are no Ubuntu drivers. Otherwise I would have got them. [11:24] brb [11:29] ian also had probs with printer scanner thing but got it going after a pile of work [11:42] That site doesn't mention my printer [11:42] ai [11:43] must still be working on it [11:43] I tried printers via SAMBA too [11:43] And I dunno what URI means [11:43] nor me [11:43] russian name [11:48] if 12.10 sees it when plugged in try simplescan. dunno if thats still in by default [11:48] Uniform Resource Indicator, similar to the Uniform Resource Location people use on a daily basis. [11:49] ty superfly [11:49] Thanks supahflahhh. [11:49] What's simplescan? [11:50] This effort is for nought at present. [11:51] I need to use my tablet the most, and to do that, I need Windows. [11:52] i used it for scanning with maverick [11:52] didnt need any setting up just worked [11:53] Ah. [11:53] Well [11:53] How do I get it? [11:53] sec [11:53] Because i tried printing from a firefox page, and it didn't even show that there were any issues, but it didn't go through either. [11:53] Maaz, google simplescan for 12.10 [11:53] Kilos: "Simple scan not working after upgrading to 12.10 - Ask Ubuntu" http://askubuntu.com/questions/205427/simple-scan-not-working-after-upgrading-to-12-10-xubuntu :: "UbuntuUpdates - Package "simple-scan" (quantal 12.10)" http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/simple-scan :: "“simple-scan” source package : Quantal (12.10) : Ubuntu" [11:53] https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/simple-scan :: "3.6.0-0ubuntu1 : simple-scan : i386 : Quantal (12.10) : Ubuntu" … [11:53] might be in synaptic TaraLS [11:54] You realize this isn't gonna stop me from having to install Windows [11:54] if its in synaptic install it from there and it will work [11:54] I've apparently got simple scan already. [11:55] ok in dash type simple and it should show [11:55] add =scan if not [11:55] -scan [11:56] oh and you can install windows in a virtual drive in ubuntu [11:56] No scanners detected [11:56] Even though it's plugged in and switched on [11:56] *shrug* [11:56] Okay, how do I install Windows in a virtual drive? [11:56] whew [11:57] Maaz, google setting up a virtual drive for windows in 12.10 [11:57] Kilos: "OS X Mountain Lion confirmed to support Fusion Drive on legacy Macs" http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/10/31/os-x-mountain-lion-offers-fusion-drive-support-on-legacy-macs :: "How to Run Ubuntu in Windows 8 Hyper-V Quickly - ServeTheHome" http://www.servethehome.com/run-ubuntu-windows-8-hyper-v-quickly/ :: "Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using [11:57] VirtualBox" http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox :: "How To Set Up Compiz In Xubuntu 12.10 O… [11:57] oh my [11:57] Hm [11:57] virtualbox [11:57] in synaptic [11:57] Virtualbox - x86 virtualization solution - base binaries [11:57] That one? [11:57] yes [11:58] kk [11:58] Do I need to get any of the other packages related to it, or no? [11:58] Also, Kilos, I guess I'll need to delete the /spare folder I have so I have space for Windows, yes? [11:58] doesnt it choose on its own [11:58] no [11:59] you got plenty space there methinks [11:59] Oyes. It did choose on its own [11:59] But I used all my space into separate folder/things for Ubuntu [11:59] I've got no free space left. Is that how that works? [11:59] wow you filled 100 gig already [11:59] no [12:00] i forget the sizes we made [12:00] I'm saying... The folders are used up for Ubuntu. Not full at all, but yeah... [12:00] no prob [12:00] Okay. [12:00] but if the virtualbox can install to /spare thats kiff [12:00] Well that's what I was meaning [12:00] im not a virtual drive person [12:00] I'd need to install Windows to something that I'm currently using [12:00] For the space. [12:01] try keep win off my pc [12:01] That doesn't instill confidence. [12:01] Yeah, well, I hate Windows, and I don't want more blue screens, but I need my tablet. [12:01] well not many guys here at the moment [12:01] install virtualbox wherever it wants to go to start with [12:02] "Go to start"? [12:02] It installed itself. [12:02] some of the guys use virtualbox for trying out other systems in [12:02] lol [12:02] tell it ty [12:02] So would I be able to install drivers of things on virtual Windows? [12:03] Hm. [12:03] i think that you now can install from the cds you have into there [12:03] Looks pretty self-explanatory. [12:03] Okay, I'ma try this. [12:03] brb. [12:04] I like virtualbox already [12:04] but [12:04] wb what happened [12:04] It's asking for me to set the base amount of memory to be used for Windows [12:04] And it apparently is at least 592mb. [12:04] But I might need at least 1 gig because I'll be using Photoshop/graphics. [12:04] thats fine [12:05] you got 4 g to play with [12:05] Okay. [12:05] I just wanted to be sure it wouldn't tax Ubuntu or something [12:05] its your pc that will get taxed not ubuntu [12:05] Like I said, just wanted to be sure. [12:06] might run a bit slow there [12:06] Okay [12:06] because its on OS running in another one [12:06] I can create a hard disk or use one already [12:06] I guess the use one already would be selecting /spare, right? [12:06] Yeah. [12:06] create i think [12:06] It recommends 10 gigs [12:06] it will be called C; [12:06] I don't have 10 spare gigs. [12:06] thats good [12:06] aw [12:07] Hm.... [12:07] does ubuntu say so [12:07] I'm saying so. BEcause I used all my gigs for these disks for Ubuntu [12:07] Which is why I asked if I should put it onto /spare [12:07] I think that's how it works [12:07] It's asking me to choose a file type [12:07] lemme look at your photoshot of the setup [12:07] Virtualbox Disk Image? [12:07] Virtual Machine Disk [12:07] Virtual Hard Disk [12:07] Parallels Hard Disk [12:07] Okay. [12:07] whew [12:08] maybe superfly can help [12:08] K, I'll wait for Superfly. [12:08] im lost unless i can see it in front of me [12:08] Well hang on [12:08] it says, above the options [12:08] or any other guy that uses virtual machines [12:09] nuvolari, ping [12:09] "Please choose the type of file that you would like to use for the new virtual disk. If you do not need to use it with other virtualization software you can leave this setting unchanges" [12:09] the defaults are fine [12:09] unchanged* [12:09] k [12:09] So I can leave it on Virtual Disk Image? [12:09] spose so [12:09] yes [12:09] Okay [12:10] And 'fixed size' or 'dynamically allocated'? [12:10] 'fixed size' sounds better, but it's automatically on dynamic [12:10] dynamically [12:10] ok [12:10] no default? [12:10] ah [12:11] File type: [12:11] VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) [12:11] Details: [12:11] Dynamically allocated storage [12:11] Location: [12:11] /home/tara-lynn/VirtualBox VMs/Windows Alongside Ubuntu/Windows Alongside Ubuntu.vdi [12:11] Size: [12:11] 10.81 GB (11607416832 B) [12:11] o.O [12:11] How many lines consitutes spam? [12:12] And do I need my disc for this, or can I choose any OS? *wriggles fingers* [12:13] 5 [12:13] Whoops. [12:13] um choose xp [12:13] I did already. I just thought it would be cool to try a newer one if I could [12:13] Maybe less problematic [12:13] all your cds are for xp right [12:14] Yeah [12:14] Well [12:14] My installation disc is XP [12:14] My others are just Windows [12:14] so they wont work on vista or 7 [12:14] Not XP-specific [12:14] ? [12:14] ah [12:14] use the os you are used to [12:14] vista and 7 are hard work [12:14] They're not too bad [12:14] and much slower that xp [12:15] But I'll keep it to icky, senile XP [12:15] they eat resources [12:15] Um... Okay. [12:15] Let me see... [12:15] Well, I created it. It was... very quick. O.o [12:15] And I will try it now, but I'll sign out here first [12:15] So brb. [12:20] Never mind. I still have to 'create process for virtual machine 'Ubuntu Alongside Windows'. [12:21] And it seems to be stuck at zero [12:22] lets see if there a link to help setup virtualbox [12:22] Oh wait [12:22] I found a hidden window with a 'next' button [12:22] *click* [12:22] Maaz, google setting up virtualbox on 12.10 [12:22] Kilos: "Using Ubuntu 12.10 under VirtualBox and cannot remove black ..." http://askubuntu.com/questions/217903/using-ubuntu-12-10-under-virtualbox-and-cannot-remove-black-panels-in-the-virtua :: "12.10 - VirtualBox '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' issue - Ask Ubuntu" http://askubuntu.com/questions/205154/virtualbox-etc-init-d-vboxdrv-setup-issue :: "Error building main [12:22] Guest Additions Module while installing ..." http://askubuntu.com/questions/204098/error-… [12:25] oh my [12:25] ? [12:26] those links didnt help [12:26] I'm installing XP from disc as if it's a normal install, only it's on virtualbox. [12:26] lol I know === zeref_hide is now known as zeref [12:36] ty for the guidance superfly [12:37] hard work that other nick [12:37] see you can never leave #ubuntu-za while i be still alive [12:38] with my last breathe i will release you [12:38] from the bondage [12:38] hehe [12:48] yo hubx [12:49] I quite like this virtualbox. [12:50] Firstly, my comp froze at 9% Windows setup (Comp had been on for about fourteen hours before that), so I just restarted and didn't open anything BUT virtualbox. [12:50] good [12:50] Now, should I set up my little Virtual Windows to do windows updates, or no? [12:50] just member if you go online with it you need antivirus and firewall [12:50] That was gonna be my next question, blah. [12:50] forget windows updates [12:50] hi all [12:50] My comp always froze when I had Kaspersky up in Windows. [12:50] avast antivirus [12:51] Hi hubx. [12:51] and zonealarm [12:51] Avast. Okay. One second. [12:52] *sniffle* [12:52] Stupid Windows startup sound [12:52] I had grown so fond of it. [12:53] awmigawsh I'm using Windows on Ubuntu. Baha. [12:53] lol [12:54] Except [12:54] The interwebs is not working on it for some reason [12:55] might need setting up [12:55] I did that already. [12:55] i dunno bout that [12:55] Maybe just disconnect the cable and reconnect [12:55] Sometimes that happens [12:55] in xp? [12:55] ? [12:55] Yes, I'm on xchat in Ubuntu [12:56] i meant the xp settings [12:56] Yes, it's set up to see the webs [12:56] of course ubuntu works [12:56] brb [12:59] afternoon [13:00] hi magespawn [13:00] hey Kilos [13:01] in virtualbox you have to tell which network connection it is supposed to use [13:03] tell her please magespawn im lost with that [13:03] would allow xp online to start with and wouldnt have xp on here anyway [13:03] will see if I can find a link [13:03] ty [13:05] http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=1RIyoGZcZe8&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D1RIyoGZcZe8 [13:06] ty will pass that on [13:06] wb TaraLS [13:06] Blah [13:06] http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=1RIyoGZcZe8&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D1RIyoGZcZe8 [13:06] Can't get internet to work in virtualbox windows [13:06] It even says that it's connected and firewalled [13:06] magespawn, gave that link to help you [13:06] Instead of just restarting VX windows, I'll stop virtualbox [13:06] That's a youtube page. [13:06] Thanks magespawn. [13:08] http://www.ghacks.net/2009/06/15/installing-a-windows-xp-as-a-virtual-machine-on-virtualbox/ [13:08] the first one is a youtube video but the mobile site, cause i am onna tablet [13:08] np yw [13:09] "Network connection in VirtualBox can be quite complex, no easy advice here. I can say it’s greatly improved in recent versions so if you are using older one then upgrade and try again. [13:09] Works for me with Windows host and Windows or Ubuntu guests and ethernet router." [13:10] That's all the guy says on that site. [13:10] "It's complex." Ooh. Helpful. [13:10] bbl got to go put a window in [13:10] ok [13:10] dont cut your fingers magespawn [13:10] do a search for how to install win xp on virtualbox [13:10] It's installed, though. [13:11] And it recognizes that the internet is 'connected' and 'firewalled' [13:11] hi Tonberry [13:11] But it wont' work. [13:11] Hello Tonberry. [13:11] hallo [13:12] Maaz, google xp on 12.10 virtualbox cant go online [13:12] Kilos: "virtualbox.org • View topic - Ubuntu 12.10 "virtually" unusable" https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=51727 :: "[ubuntu] Virtualbox won't run in Ubuntu 12.10 - Ubuntu Forums" http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2082194 :: "Newest 'virtualbox' Questions - Ask Ubuntu" http://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/virtualbox :: "VirtualBox 4.2.0 [13:12] Released With Support For Drag'n'drop From Host ..." http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/virtual… [13:12] sigh [13:13] Nothing ever goes smoothly. [13:15] ya murphy [13:15] Maaz, murphys law [13:15] If something can give trouble, rest assured, it will [13:17] Ah... [13:17] In 'settings' on virtual box, before going into Windows XP, I selected the XP system and went to 'network' [13:17] "Enable Network Adapter" attached to: [13:18] yay [13:18] Not attached, NAT, Bridged Adapter, Internal Network, Host-only Adapter, Generic Driver [13:18] which one should I select? [13:19] not sure [13:19] I'll just try one at a time, I guess. [13:19] nat i think [13:19] It's already on nAT [13:19] try internal then [13:19] or try one at a time as you said [13:19] TaraLS: use bridged [13:20] I was thinking bridged... [13:20] One moment [13:21] Yay it ACTUALLY works. [13:21] Kilos, just go to avast.com or another site? [13:22] go to there [13:22] they should give their options [13:23] you want the free one [13:23] Yes [13:24] http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download [13:25] lolololololololol [13:25] what? [13:25] "Internet explorer cannot open the site avast etc etc..." [13:25] "Operation aborted" [13:26] install firefox then [13:26] ie sucks [13:26] always has [13:26] I know [13:26] But I wanted to use the basic to avoid harming my PC [13:26] lol [13:26] I went down to basic Windows stuff before and it helped [13:26] Don't lol at that [13:26] get opera [13:26] It's frustrating when nothing works. [13:26] very light [13:26] TaraLS: you want to avoid harming the PC, so you used IE? that's a contradiciton [13:26] *contradiction [13:26] lol [13:26] Heh... [13:27] Like I said, going back to basic Windows stuff helped the issue. [13:27] Lessened the problems. [13:27] Despite that, yes, IE sucks big time. [13:27] * superfly has parentals arriving soon, later [13:27] TaraLS, http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-49-opera [13:27] See ya. [13:27] I'm getting Firefox [13:27] w/e [13:27] toods fly [13:28] ty fly [13:28] Yep, thanks for the help. [13:29] ZoneAlarm firewall? [13:30] yip [13:36] here be the visitors we get [13:36] no look my fat tummy [13:36] http://imageshack.us/content_round.php?page=done&l=img688/9343/visitorc.jpg [13:42] lol [13:46] Who's the person next toyou? [13:46] brother outlaw [13:47] lol [13:48] long snake hey [13:48] methinks egytion cobra [13:48] egyption cobra [13:49] whew [13:50] egyptian [13:50] wbb in 30 mins or so [13:50] gonna move sheeps [13:50] It's veeery long [13:50] And ok [14:14] but dead [14:14] window puttt is not so good for touch screens [14:14] putty even [14:15] Aw [14:15] only good snake is a dead snake [14:16] no then you have too many rats [14:16] nope [14:16] yes [14:16] wonderful rat poison onna market [14:16] then that kills the owls [14:16] snake eats 2 rats a week and rats breed 30 a week [14:17] then you have too many rats [14:17] lol [14:17] that is why you need more snakes then rats [14:17] Virtualbox XP won't see my USB printer connected [14:17] I'm starting to hate USB. :D [14:18] the usb has to be enabled for the virtual machine i think same as the network, setting is somewhere [14:18] Okay [14:19] and snakes eat dozens of eggs every week [14:19] and kill the odd sheep that gets inna way [14:19] and spit inna dogs eyes [14:20] you usually also need to be in the vboxusers group to use usb pass through [14:20] What's 'usb pass through'? [14:22] Oh [14:23] My VB XP says that I haven't got Base System Device or Video Controller (VGA) [14:23] They have question marks over them in the device manager [14:24] Says that the USB are enabled. [14:26] the question marks mean the windows does not have drivers for those devices [14:27] On this forum, one person suggests that Guest Additions will help. Hm. [14:32] Ugh, this isn't worth it. [14:32] So sick of computer hassles. I just want to throw it through a wall. [14:32] hah [14:33] :( [14:33] there is an extension of murphy's law, murphy's computer law [14:34] * TaraLS pulls hair out. [14:34] if something can go wrong it will, and nothing can go wrong like a computer [14:34] More like "Everything that can go wrong will. Everything. Even stuff that shouldn't." [14:35] you sukkeling with what now? [14:35] I sukkel with everything computer-related these days. [14:36] if you put the xp cd in and add/remove isnt there more relevant stuff you havent installed [14:36] control panel add/remove [14:37] I said nothing about not having add/remove, what. [14:37] I have add/remove. [14:38] I'm apparently missing Video Controller (VGA) and Base System Device [14:39] you'll need to get drivers from manufaturers website [14:39] so put the cd in and see if its available on the cd [14:39] I tried the CD. And nope. [14:39] must be vga or svga on the cd [14:39] I don't even know what 'base system drivers' means [14:39] So I dunno what website to go to [14:39] how else does it work with an xp install [14:40] This is a virtual XP install [14:40] Typically, I don't have these driver issues when it's a proper install [14:40] ya but xp is xp so it should still see what hardware is in the pc [14:42] If that's the case, then why did magespawn say that I'd need to enable the USB? They should already be enabled, since XP is XP, and it still should see what hardware is in the pc. [14:42] you want to print from virtualbox with a usb printer? [14:42] the base system drivers are usually the intel/other make of motheboard chipset on the board [14:42] tonberry: I have to. It doesn't work in Ubuntu. [14:43] tonberry: I was just gonna reinstall windows properly, alongside Ubuntu, and then fix the grub or whatever, but Kilos suggested using virtualbox [14:43] i see [14:43] i meant enable them in the virtual box, that allows the xp to communicate through the virtual box to the ubuntu [14:43] has the pc stopped crashing yet? [14:43] lexmark printer Tonberry [14:44] no linux drivers [14:44] magespawn: Oh?... I... have no idea. Is that possible? [14:44] i think my mother actually has a ubuntu friendly lexmark [14:44] but printers are pretty hit and miss [14:44] in my experience [14:44] Kilos did you think of trying Wine rather than VirtualBox? [14:45] Yeah. My printer is like the only one of one hundred million that doesn't work with Ubuntu. Go freaking figure. [14:45] wine for a printer driver? [14:45] Afternoon all [14:45] ai ive had horrble crashes with wine [14:45] Hello mazal [14:45] Tonberry: Computer still freezes [14:45] TaraLS: i think so somewhere in the virtual box settings for that machine [14:45] but its worth a try seeing as she not paying 3g data prices [14:45] just a thought [14:46] TaraLS: so it has to be hardware then [14:46] maybe 12.10's wine is more advanced [14:46] drivers in wine are near impossible [14:46] ... [14:46] I give up. [14:46] There, the computer defeated me. [14:46] I don't want to deal with it anymore. [14:46] Thanks for your help, guys. [17:32] my blackberry [17:32] only thing the freezer does is make it very cold [17:33] one of these tails that it's meant to reset the batteries memory or something [17:33] tales* [17:34] magespawn, that pc has a pci express slot for the graphics card methinks [17:34] no vga slot [17:34] used to be old wives tales. no young twits tales [17:35] Kilos: battery died when it wasn't empty. so it's worth a shot [17:35] only old style batteries get memory [17:35] * Squirm shrugs [17:36] lol [17:36] TaraLS: you doing this on a pc? software? wacom tablet? [17:36] Wacom... I wish. Then my tablet would work with Ubuntu. [17:37] aw there is wacom software in repos [17:37] she would have another one hey [17:37] I draw them first with pencil on paper, then I scan it in, and then I colour it with my Genius tablet on Photoshop [17:37] Or... did. [17:37] TaraLS: my wife and my two sons might not like that... [17:37] superfly: what? [17:37] lol [17:37] Nooo [17:37] Go away people who need superfly in real life. [17:37] Oh. I thowwy. [17:37] I didn't mean it, really. [17:38] * superfly disappears back downstairs... [17:38] Not -reaaally-. [17:38] D'oh. [17:38] TaraLS: no worries, I get it [17:38] :-) [17:38] Richelieu is always tasty :) [17:39] TaraLS: are wacom tablets expensive? [17:39] Sadly, yes. [17:39] in oz? [17:39] But I JUST got this tablet a month ago for my birthday. [17:39] And I can't afford to get another one just so it works with one OS. [17:41] i found some other ones here that are supposed to work with ubuntu and were half the price of the wacom [17:41] TaraLS, ask their forums whats the chance of getting linux drivers soon [17:41] will tell you the name when i remember [17:41] I'm not buying another tablet, though I appreciate that. [17:42] kilos: I've seen in other forums that people will "just have to wait". [17:42] ah [17:42] well it will come [17:42] so more hard hand work till then [17:43] but you gotta see your printer scanner first as well [17:43] sigh [17:43] i have played around with gimp and inkscape a bit, i like both of those [17:49] Hi Kilos Everyone [17:50] hi magtie [17:51] oh magespawn tell me [17:52] TaraLS, has two massive partitions formatted to ext4 as /storage and /spare [17:52] Stupid GIMP [17:52] My tools bar and the other one are gone [17:52] can she format one to fat or ntfs and install xp to there? [17:52] should work i think [17:53] might mess up the boot sector some but boot repair should sort it hey? [17:54] Sites suggest installing Windows before Ubuntu BECAUSE it messes up something in ubuntu boot [17:54] One sight said it was the Grub that needed to be fixed [17:54] maybe i must try a virtual box here [17:54] Whatever the heck the grub is. [17:54] Try virtual box for what? [17:54] grub is your boot loader [17:54] to see if i can get xp working [17:55] XP is working on Virtual Box [17:55] It's just missing those two thingies. [17:55] I don't want to deal with it anymoooore. [17:55] lol [17:56] does it need those 2 thingies to work your printer? [17:56] and tablet [17:56] * mazal peeks back in [17:56] yo mazal [17:56] wie loer kry niks [17:57] Yes, I guess it does. [17:57] But I don't know how to make them work. [17:57] :| [17:57] Sigh. [17:57] My resolve is not so impressive anymore, superfly. [17:57] i have a windows xp world exclusive optimization toolkit cd here [17:57] So? [17:58] And how did someone who hates Windows get something as useful-sounding as that? [17:58] lol [17:58] its who you know [17:58] It's a boot-build-in format c: - install-linux cd [17:59] mazal, ? [18:00] There's only 1 way to optimize windoze , format c: , install linux :) [18:00] I see. [18:00] So hey, here's a riddle/not. [18:00] haha [18:01] tara wassup your gimp? [18:01] Reminds me of an intern we had. He knew only 2 fixes to every problem. Reboot , if that don't work , format [18:01] if you do install windows after ubuntu there is grub work in your future [18:01] My Windows crashed on a fatal blue screen, and I couldn't get into it to retrieve my files. So, I ran Ubuntu and managed to get my files THROUGH Ubuntu and saved them (two docs) to a flash drive. Now, all the other images/docs/etc on the flash drive were saved when Windows was still up and operating. But these two were taken from Windows in its crashed state. They have these little ~$- in their file names and the text is [18:01] 'encoded'. Hoooow do I encode? [18:01] thats the right way with winsucks mazal [18:02] Er. decode* [18:03] you must catch magespawn when on pc [18:03] he on fone thingie now [18:03] To my knowledge ~$ is temporary files and not the actual main file [18:03] TaraLS, did you try rename them [18:04] NooOoOoOoO [18:04] *sniffle* [18:04] usually if it is a word file etc, the program that made the file can sometimes recover it [18:04] and remove that ~$ [18:04] Oh. [18:04] I tried removing the ~& [18:04] $ [18:04] It did squat [18:04] eish [18:04] thats just the name, does not change the file [18:05] what files are they? [18:05] But the program that made it was Microsoft Word 2002 [18:05] They're word documents [18:05] made them* [18:05] try open office or libre office? [18:05] Haven't tried open office yet [18:05] But libre office doesn't open them [18:05] I get weird characters: #################### [18:06] nothing in libreoffice can see whats actually there magespawn [18:06] maybe a plain text editor like gedit [18:06] i tried gedit [18:07] wants to go look for stuff to open it and then says there aint niks [18:07] here is the closest i got [18:07] #Tara-Lynn Sharrock#####################################T#a#r#a#-#L#y#n#n# #S#h#a#r#r#o#c#k###DM2#########################################\L3######## [18:08] send me a link to files when i come online tomrrow, i will see what i can do [18:08] funny the name not corrupted as well [18:08] will be about 10:00 sa time [18:08] A link to files? [18:08] or mail me the files if they not too big [18:09] It says that they're only bytes. :( [18:09] the ones you cannot open [18:09] 162k [18:09] tiny [18:09] But they should have about 45 pages. [18:09] What do you mean 'a link'? [18:09] Upload them somewhere? [18:09] I'd rather email them directly. [18:09] if you want, but they are small so email should be fine [18:10] do you not use dropbox, ubuntuone or a similar service? [18:10] I have ubuntuone [18:10] I just don't want to share them with the whole interwebs world [18:10] Ubuntuone is safe, yes? [18:11] you could also try to open them in google docs [18:11] I tried that.
