uabn93hello01:15
uabn93If anyone isnt busy, im getting installer problems where the window closes after i finish the password/user phase01:17
uabn93lubuntu 12.1001:17
d1gitalIs it possible to disable the minimize/restore animation?01:39
phiscribed1gital, yes, give me a moment to remember where01:40
d1gitald'oh! found it.01:41
phiscribek01:41
d1gitalobconf -> Appearance->Animate iconify and restore01:41
uabn93hi im getting an "illegal instruction" error on the ubiquity installer for lubuntu 12.10. am i partitioning wrong?01:43
xnoxuabn93: switch to tty1, if possible and file a bug with `ubuntu-bug ubiquity` this should attach all relevant logs & print a url to go to complete the bug filing.01:44
uabn93xnox: im redoing the install with a password i dont care about exposing01:48
scigodwhen using lubuntu live cd, i logout and try to login again, but i  input a wrong user name, how can i go back to change user name?05:33
Unit193If I remember correctly, the username is ubuntu and there is no password.05:35
scigodUsername should be lubuntu and password is empty. The problem is if i input a wrong user name, i can not change it.05:37
Unit193It uses lightdm, which should have an "other" user, if you aren't at that, press escape.05:49
scigodI was at that. Pressed escape but nothing happened.05:52
bioterrorhonestly I dont see much point in logging out from LiveCD05:57
ladkiwiHello09:49
ladkiwiEach time I open a new folder with pcmanfm it opens in a new tab of an existing pcmanfm window. Even if I am on another desktop. Is there a way to change this behavior ?09:50
dydi need to get some parameters from a udev event (usb insertion) that triggers a bash script. I managed to find that $ID_VENDOR has the value of ATTRS{vendor}, now i need to know how i can get the values of ATTRS{model}, ATTRS{idVendor}, ATTRS{idProduct}, ATTRS{bcdDevice}, ATTRS{serial}. Anyone knows how i can get them in my bash script?13:27
leszekhi17:54
danielspHi18:18
AmgineQuery: is there any way to get rid of chromium without getting rid of lubuntu-desktop?18:55
holsteinif its just for the space, i wouldnt worry about it too much18:56
Unit193Nope, but it doesn't matter as lubuntu-desktop is just a metapackage.18:56
AmgineOkay; mostly I just don't want chromium on my box.18:58
AmgineThanks!18:59
DanteHi all. Does someone know why I could not install Lubuntu 12.10 alongside Windos XP?19:40
DanteThere never was such option during installation. And as a consequence of that, installation erased whole windows with all data in it. Which leads to another question: is there any way to get data back?19:41
uabn93the documentation says "The default "Desktop" installer requires 384-800 MB of RAM"19:49
uabn93does this mean you cant use more than that?19:49
uabn93Im confused19:49
uabn93My system has 1GB of ram right now.19:50
bioterrorDante, you can try photorec or something to get random files19:51
bioterrormost of the stuff is probably lost19:51
Unit193uabn93: No, just that you need that much.19:51
uabn93Unit193: ok. I filed a bug report because I cant get 12.10 to install.19:52
uabn93just trying to solve my problem19:52
DanteBioterror, that I am afraid about... But how there was no such option to "install alongside Windows". Only first option had warning that all data will be lost. I chose second option, and then it all was gone.19:53
bioterrorquite difficult to say afterwards19:53
DanteFor example this page (this is for older Lubuntu) shows such option: http://launchintolinux.wordpress.com/2012/04/04/installing-lubuntu-a-step-by-step-guide-to-dual-booting/19:56
DanteSomehow I feel that installation should issue some warnings prior to erasing whole system!19:56
uabn93how do i troubleshoot installation problems. the installer keeps crashing on me19:57
bioterroryes, I think people should do all the partition manually by theirselves with fdisk or cfdisk19:57
bioterrorpartitioning19:58
Dantemaybe they should. And I should have made some backups prior installation...20:01
bioterrorthink positive, more space for lubuntu!20:02
Unit193uabn93: Use alternate, then.20:03
uabn93Unit193: ill try that. thanks20:06
DanteMore space yes, but I am sorry for my girlfriend who lost bunch of photos of other files because of my stupidity, and somewhat unintuitive installer..!20:09
bioterrortry photorec20:09
bioterror!photorec20:09
bioterror!filerecovery20:09
Unit193!recovery20:10
ubottuTo rescue a broken system, boot the alternate install CD and select "Rescue a broken system"20:10
bioterrorstupid ubottu20:10
Unit193Meh.20:10
bioterrorsomeone should teach it more smarter20:10
bioterror!google ubuntu file recovery20:10
ubottuI have no google command, use http://www.google.com/20:10
bioterror:D20:10
bioterror!altavista20:10
prplhaving trouble with onboard onscreen keyboard. It opens as a blank black dialogue box20:10
bioterrorprpl, every other app works without a prob?20:17
prplpretty much...20:17
prplI just added it through the lubuntu software center20:18
holsteinprpl: open a terminal and launch it from there see if you see any helpful error output20:19
Dante___How should I use photorec. Run it on some boot cd? Something like this: http://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/20:20
prplholstein: onboard adds itself to the panel but the terminal say:(python:21462): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE20:23
prplI decorated it...so I could see it better but it's still a blank screen20:24
prplI can undecorate through onboard-preferences20:24
bioterrorDante___, I would insert usb hdd or something like that and salvage files to there20:25
prplno keyboard shows up inside it's provided 2"x4" box20:26
Dante___But can I run the Lubuntu itself from laptops hard drive?20:28
prplwhat about running parted magic from a live cd...It has photorec20:29
bioterrorif you want20:30
bioterrorwhat ever suits your needs20:30
prplstill neede an alternate storade20:31
prplstorage*20:31
Dante___I have external USB hard drive, which I have been using on Windows20:31
prplsounds like alternate storage20:32
Dante___I should only know which software to use, and where and how to run it. I am quite new to linux world....20:32
Dante___Especially cryptic command line is not obvious to me.20:33
prplDante__did you delete files, folder or what ?20:33
Dante___Installed Lubuntu on Windows XP laptop20:34
Dante___and it never warned me that it will delete everything20:34
Dante___i wanted to have both20:34
prplIt took outb XP?20:34
Dante___yes20:36
Dante___no dual boot option, no trace of old windows files.. :(20:36
prplSo lubuntu occupies the whole drive ?20:37
Dante___yes20:37
prplEver run the terminal ?20:37
Dante___its 80 gb drive20:37
prploops20:37
Dante___with windows on it it had some 40 gb free20:37
Dante___now, after installation there is some 70 gb free20:37
prplfree but not on a seperate partition20:37
prplwindows was on one partition with 40 gb free20:38
Dante___yes, Lubuntu took over the whole drive!20:38
Dante___exactly20:38
prplok...have you done anything on the new install yet ?20:38
prplare youn using it now ?20:39
Dante___but (stupid me!) I supposed that installer will handle it. I suppose Ubuntu can be "easily" installed alongside windows.20:39
Dante___I did nothing after i noticed all is gone.20:39
prplIs that the selection you made ??20:39
prplinstall alongside?20:40
Dante___actually there was no such option available20:40
Dante___first was to delete windows20:40
prplthye first option was close to that20:40
Dante___second was something with SVN(?!?!)20:40
prplor one of the options20:40
Dante___and third was "so something else"20:41
holsteinphororec is a great tool.. i use it from the ultimate boot cd live.. but you can install testdisk20:41
prpldoesnt really matter at ythis point how you got here...gotta  get testdisk or photorec20:41
Dante___so I was surprised NOT to see alongside option, and took the second option20:42
Dante___no, it really does not.20:42
Dante___but yet I am surprised how it never asked me any confirmation to delete everything20:42
Dante___is there some bug or something, or am I just plain stupid?!20:43
prplYou gotta move slow through that part of the installation so you dont do exactly taht20:43
prplthat*20:43
prplI think he needs testdisk at this point20:44
prplIt will let you dig down to previous installations and rewrite them20:44
prplie windows20:44
Dante___testdisk, what is that.. have to google a little bit...20:45
Dante___is it possible that testdisk can do something although whole installation has been written on the drive?20:47
prplit comes on the parted magic repair restore all around helper tool cd 250 plus mb download20:47
prplDante__yes it can help20:48
prplIt can see the old windows installation20:48
prplI cant guarantee it of course but it save d me once big time20:49
bioterrormore you wonder, more data you might loose20:50
Dante___that laptop is now off, I am trying to build strategy to salvage it now20:50
bioterroryou put livecd in20:51
bioterrorlike TRK20:51
bioterroryou insert usb drive20:51
bioterroryou mount it20:51
Dante___Ok, I have to make parted magic cd, and run testdisk from there?20:51
bioterrorand you use the software you want to copy the data to this usb storage20:51
prplyep20:52
bioterroras you probably understand that you can copy the stuff back to this over writter drive20:52
bioterroryou cant20:52
bioterrorand written20:52
prplboot from the live cd and possibly rewrite the windows to the same drive same location20:52
bioterroror just grab the .jpg and other files from there20:53
prplbio...testdisk can rewrite to the same lovation20:53
prpllocation20:53
Dante___basically i dont care about the windows, only user files it had (photos, documents, etc)20:53
bioterrorI once did data rescue at work20:53
bioterrornever again20:54
prpltestdisk woill let you see the filoes and you can copy to usb...20:54
prpltoo stressful20:54
bioterrorI accidentally saw that mature ladys naked pictures20:54
prplhaha....not the stress20:54
prplfear of data20:55
Dante___Fear of data... who knows what I will find...20:56
prplthe reason I suggest parted magic is because it is a full operating system but is only 250 plus mb to download20:56
prpland it has photorec testdisk ...and plenty more20:57
bioterrorTRK <320:57
Dante___ok that sounds very good20:57
prplwhats TRK ?20:57
Dante___and prob I can mount my ext usb drive there too?20:57
=== Topy44 is now known as T44
bioterrorprpl, http://trinityhome.org20:57
Dante___I was also wondering what is TRK?!20:58
prplIt is the same as [parted magic ...but different...20:59
Dante___so it seems20:59
prplclick the link and download it20:59
Dante___it seems there is lot of tools available.. how should I sum this up? Parted magic, testdisk and photorec? Or TRK?21:00
Dante___And what about this http://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/21:00
prplTRK..the link is right above you21:00
Dante___Thanks, I saw it...21:01
bioterrorTRK has testdisk21:01
bioterrorit also has photorec21:01
prplAnd you can keepit handy for the next foible21:02
Dante___Ok, they have same software21:02
Dante___do you know about gddrescue21:02
prplnot I21:03
bioterrorgddrescue is a GUI thingie for ddrescue21:03
prplOnce you rescue your stuff you will be standing on street corners presching about how TRK saved your life !21:04
bioterroror something like that21:04
bioterrorI've used dd_rescue and ddrescue21:04
prplor testdisk really21:04
Dante___i hope that21:04
prplnever used photorec21:05
Dante___or maybe i spend some tedious hours in rescue, to find out that there actually was never anything really necessary...21:05
bioterrormaybe21:05
prplRescue the stuff anyway21:06
Dante___anyhow, I have to try, since it is my girllfriends laptop21:06
Dante___Ok guys, it is bedtime here, so thank you very much! Tomorrow I will tackle the problem!21:07
prplgdluck21:07
bioterroröitä :D21:07
Dante___Jahaa, öitä & good night! :)21:08
