GeothstI just got a really weird error about x11 missing some directories. I couldn't copy/paste or screenshot the error because my computer turned itself off after I got the error. I've uninstalled Nouveau and NVidia drivers, and uninstalled and reinstalled X11. Is there any way I can see if the problem is still there or not without knowing what those error messages were?00:33

GandalfBHello Everyone - I'm a newly installed 12.10 user and new to linux.  I wondered if there was anyone who could help me diagnose a network problem I'm having today?11:28
cairnewhats going on?11:30
GandalfBHello Cairne11:30
GandalfBI've just clean installed ubuntu 12.10, and the network keeps flashing up disconnected.11:31
GandalfBIts a wired connection, and onboard network card11:31
GandalfBif I use the lspci command,  I seem to be able to locate the device and it seems (not to sure how to tell) that ubuntu has correctly identified it.11:32
GandalfBif I run, ifconfig - I can see the two devices, the actual adapter and loopback11:32
philipballewGandalfB, hello11:32
philipballewlets look at this11:32
GandalfBthe adapter dosn't seem to have an IP4 address11:33
philipballewwanna output some stuff for me into pastbin?11:33
philipballewhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/11:33
philipballewlspci -vvv11:33
philipballewits gonna be long, but I want to see all there is11:33
GandalfBthat could be very tricky as that comp is not on network at all11:33
philipballewah. I see11:34
philipballewwell lets do this11:34
GandalfBis there a way to pipe it to text fire11:34
GandalfBthe console output11:34
GandalfB*file11:34
philipballewyeah. piping a text file is cat11:34
philipballewlet me see how to do that again11:34
philipballewthat way if I have to go, someone can help you11:35
GandalfBok cheers11:35
GandalfB((help is much appericated as I've not had much luck with multiple hours of googling))11:36
philipballewhttp://flossstuff.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/using-cat-command-in-linux-to-createdisplayconcatenate-and-append-files/11:36
philipballewits alright. its 3:30 here so Im kinda out of it11:36
philipballewbut I can help for a sec11:37
GandalfB((help is much appericated as I've not had much luck with multiple hours of googling))11:38
GandalfBoh sorry for the spam11:38
GandalfB:S11:38
GandalfBok I have the output11:39
GandalfBjust sticking it in that website11:39
philipballewno hurry11:39
philipballewso where in the world do you live?11:39
philipballewdont say middle earth11:40
philipballewokay, you can say it11:40
GandalfBhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1372254/11:40
GandalfBUK11:40
GandalfBBrighton11:40
GandalfBpasted away11:40
cairnewhen you go into the network manager does it list the device?11:41
GandalfBfrom a novice look at that text file,  it looks like the driver has been loaded correctly11:41
GandalfBis that the screen titled network connections11:42
GandalfB?11:42
GandalfBit shows wired connectoin 111:42
philipballewGandalfB, personally Id hook it up to a cat5 and update the laptop then check for additional drivers11:42
GandalfBwell to be fair.  "Wired Connection 1"11:42
GandalfBits on cat511:42
GandalfBits not a wireless problem, its wired problem11:43
philipballewso check for additional drivers to see if theres a wifi driver11:43
cairnedoes your router automatically assign ip?11:43
GandalfByes11:43
GandalfBI'm using the same router for this windows machine11:43
GandalfBand I've swapped the cables11:44
philipballewthe closed source sinners like to live in the driver underworld11:44
GandalfBto see if its socket / router problem11:44
GandalfBand there is no wifi on teh machine either,  its desktop, with onboard network card, 10/100/100011:44
GandalfBit feels it trying to get an ip6 address, and failing, becuase I don't think the router supports ip611:45
GandalfBthats my feeling11:45
GandalfBis there any way to test that theory??11:45
philipballewcairne, ^11:47
cairnei'm trying to think how you would test that11:48
cairneusually its the wired connection that works without a hitch lol, what does gui network manager say about the card is it disabled?11:49
GandalfBit just says it was last used 3 days ago11:50
GandalfBand teh desktop keeps flashing up wired connection disconected11:50
GandalfBmaybe its a faulty nic?11:51
GandalfBis there way to test that?11:52
philipballewnot sure for your hardware11:52
cairnesudo lshw see where the logical address is for your nic11:53
cairneshould be under *-network then it will list the information11:54
GandalfBfound it11:55
GandalfBwhat would I be looking for there11:55
cairneshould say logical device for instance mine is eth011:56
GandalfBlogical name: eth011:56
GandalfBis what I have11:56
cairnegksudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces11:58
philipballewyou can cat that11:58
philipballew"put a cat on it!"11:58
GandalfBok I run that command,  I now have a text window saying11:59
GandalfB# interfaces(5) fire used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8(11:59
cairnehttp://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-networking-configuration-using-command-line.html11:59
GandalfBauto lo11:59
cairnethisis what i was going off of12:00
GandalfBiface lo inet loopback12:00
cairnemight work changing lo to eth012:00
philipballewNO!12:01
philipballewnm needs ot to be lo12:01
philipballew*It12:01
* philipballew goes back to his paper now12:01
GandalfBso don't change anything?12:02
philipballewwell I recall that network manager needs that file to be like that12:03
philipballewchanging will mess up where you dont have any internet12:03
philipballewso yeah, dont change12:03
GandalfBok12:03
philipballewphilip@PrincessLeia:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces12:04
philipballewauto lo12:04
philipballewiface lo inet loopback12:04
GandalfBim wondering if there is some odd bios setting?12:04
philipballewGandalfB, id say its just a odd bug . how old is the laptop12:05
philipballewprobably made them mad when I said no.12:06
GandalfBits a dekstop - probally 6 years12:06
GandalfBif I buy a new network card12:06
philipballewokay. so should work, but Id look at the model of nic to see if there is a bug12:06
GandalfBhow do I install it?12:06
GandalfBbeyond the physical installation12:07
philipballewnothing12:07
philipballewubuntu finds and boots all the drivers for you12:07
GandalfBok12:07
GandalfBso is there safe network card to 'buy'12:07
GandalfBand test12:07
philipballewunless it doesnt have them ,then you cant use that.12:07
philipballewI am not sure off hand. the internet might know somewhere or your loco?12:08
GandalfBI see what I can pickup12:10
GandalfBand report back in hor or so12:10
GandalfBbrb12:11
philipballewi will probably not be here12:13
GandalfBHey all -  just a quick update on my networking problem,  a new network nic fixed it.13:51
Phryqhey, is there a way to run fluxbox other that using "startx"?16:10
holsteinPhryq: you should be able to choose it at login from the manager you are using.. i choose openbox in lightdm16:13
PhryqI don't use a login manager, but maybe I'll install one16:19
Phryqif I install one (SLiM) then the manager will automatically run?16:20
Phryqor do I have to configure it to do so?16:20
holsteinPhryq: i had issues with slim, and assumed it was on my end.. typically, you choose in the GUI and that choice is remembered16:21
Phryqok; well I've just installed slim; so I'll restart and see what happens17:00
