Kilosbut i enjoy them as well10:07
Vince-0*looking at the site10:08
Kiloswe got a re-approval coming up soon10:09
Kilosneed to be re-approved every year10:09

Squirmgood afternoon10:14
Vince-0so once I get a decent headset and webcam - its OON! I've started a discussion framework10:14
Vince-0Hi Squirm10:15
Kiloshi Squirm 10:16
Kilosif you neglect ubuntu-za i gonna be cross10:23
Kilosubuntu is the top linux distro10:23
Kiloslets keep it like that10:24
Vince-0meh10:24
Vince-0Canonical has questionable moves 10:25
Vince-0If you're a Free/Libre purist then hardly any distro will do - 10:26
Vince-0http://trisquel.info/ for the purists10:26
Vince-0doesn't contain any proprietary code whatsoever - so I guess it comes down to drivers10:27
Vince-0havn't tried it myself10:27
Vince-0Are you guys involved with your local LUGs? Jhb/pretoria ?10:28
Kilosya man many of the guys here are using other distros and ubuntu flavours. the bit thing is to keep us part of the ubuntu community10:28
Kilosi have tinycorelinux as well10:28
Vince-0I've been listening to a few Richard Stallman interviews...10:29
Kilosand whats he have to say?10:33
Kilosdont give me a link10:33
Vince-0ow, let me see here10:34
Kiloslistening to audio eats data10:34
Vince-0http://hackerpublicradio.org/eps.php?id=111610:34
Vince-0dunno what the file download size is10:35
Kilosim reading there10:36
Vince-0RMS is the GNU creator10:36
Vince-0so the definition of Linux is that its just the kernel.10:36
Vince-0Ubuntu is technically a GNU/Linux distro because it uses the GNU userspace OS and Linux kernel10:36
Vince-0There is also a big difference between the Debian etc type distros and the BSD types with regard to licensing10:37
Vince-0BSD is doing away with all GPL code and their latest release does away with GCC compiler using GPL to a compiler using BSD license10:37
Vince-0purists! the world needs the extremists to push the envelope10:38
Kilosubuntu was my escape from windows. and have enjoyed it for a few years now so will keep using it as long as possible10:39
Kilosgo look at tinycorelinux10:40

Kiloswhat progress have you made13:46
TaraLSSo my comp has been on for about 21 hours in Live Ubuntu (running from USB), and it hasn't frozen once. I even left a Youtube video paused for an hour while I went to the shop (which meant that my comp went into 'screensaver mode'), and I managed to pause/resume/pause/resume several times, AND I was able to convert two videos from Youtube to MPEG4 on VLC.13:47
TaraLSNo freezes.13:47
Kilosah that sounds good13:47
TaraLSWell, I have no idea what it means.13:47
TaraLSWhy does it not freeze on Live Ubuntu? Does that just mean that an actual install of an OS is taxing the hardware?13:48
Kilosit means that it software that gets sicker when upgraded13:48
TaraLSWhich really doesn't leave us any closer to anything.13:48
TaraLSAre you sure?13:48
Kilosyes now we can look in software13:48
* TaraLS waves to magespawn.13:48
TaraLSKilos:  Okay. brb13:48
Kilosmaybe something clashing 13:48
Symmetriahrm, I'm really impressed by how many major international tech companies are finally waking up and investing in this continent13:49
Kiloswhew i dont know what to google for tumbleweed 13:51
Kilostaras pc fine from live cd but hands when streaming youtube from drive13:51
Kiloshangs13:53
mazalbad hdd ?13:56
TaraLSI did a HDD test using Disk Checker in Ubuntu, and it said it was fine.13:56
TaraLS"Status: Ok" or something.13:56
TaraLSBtw, what happens when you want to make your HDD space bigger? Do you get a completely new HDD, or can you upgrade your old one?13:56
TaraLSCuz mine was about 180G or something, and the person who reformatted my comp twice gave me 1T.13:57
mazalTara if you can and have the means , try and do an install to an external and run from that and see what happens. To try and rule out your hdd and m/board interface to the hdd13:58
TaraLSThe one COMP I have access to is the 225mb of RAM one, and that has XP - and I NEED it to have XP so I can use my tablet.13:59
TaraLSThe one comp aside from mine (this one), I mean.13:59
TaraLSThat comp, annoyingly, has never had any issues.13:59
Kilosmazal, normally ubuntu gives you early warning if there is the slightest probs with a drive14:04
Kilosputs a little icon in the top bar/panel14:04
Kilosthat thing14:04
Kilosive seen it often repairing old crashed drives14:05
Kilosit shows up on drives that xp installs on with no prob14:05
mazalIs it just with youtube or in general that it freezes ?14:06
TaraLSYoutube is what I know for a fact freezes it, so I use Youtube to test if the comp is STILL Freezing.14:08
TaraLSOtherwise, when I had XP and my programs installed, Windows Movie Maker froze it, and my recording programs Avid Pro Tools SE, Cakewalk Home Studio 2002, and my screensaver froze it, and my antivirus Kaspersky froze it.14:08
TaraLSI managed to greatly reduce the freezing on XP by disabling my screensaver and antivirus14:10
TaraLSAnd by using Windows stuff instead of other stuff (Such as I.E instead of Firefox)14:10
mazalIf you play a movie from the hdd , or a dvd from the rom ? What heppens ?14:10
TaraLSBut it DID still freeze and bluescreen14:10
TaraLSmazal:  It's perfectly fine. It doesn't freeze. 14:10
TaraLSI haven't played a DVD in a while, but I've played several movies from HDD, and they never freeze.14:11
mazalHave you tried a different browser ?14:11
TaraLSThough, one froze today. I believe, however, that it's because I had a streamed video conversion paused in VLC.14:11
TaraLSmazal:  It's not browser related.14:11
TaraLSI've used three different browsers over the course of the last several months14:12
TaraLSI.E, Firefox, and Chrome.14:12
TaraLSDoes anyone know if Kbmonkey will be around today?14:12
TaraLSHe's really the one I want to tell this to. It was his suggestion to try freeze the comp from Live.14:12
TaraLSMaybe he had a thought going.14:12
mazalSo in ubuntu it is only the youtube that freezes it ?14:12
TaraLSmazal:  Well, partially, because Ubuntu doesn't have Windows MOvie Maker, and I haven't installed my programs because I want to fix the comp first.14:13
TaraLSMy comp has also frozen when I've searched for things in Dash14:13
TaraLSI think it would be fair to say 'streaming video', not necessarily Youtube specifically.14:13
TaraLSThough I haven't tried other sites.14:14
mazalThis is a tough one , anything from power supply to ram to cpu would show up in live as well14:15
TaraLSRAM is fine, I think.14:15
TaraLSI've taken one out and used the other, and vice versa, and the comp still freezes.14:15
TaraLSUsing each.14:15
TaraLSNot sure. What is different between an installed OS and just running a Live OS?14:15
TaraLSEven though I've got Ubuntu installed on my comp, so it's still there on the HDD, running Live Ubuntu the comp did not freeze.14:16
mazalBut , the thing that does point to hardware is the fact that both Windoze and Ubuntu does it14:16
TaraLSStill has not.14:16
TaraLSmazal: Yeah.14:16
mazalWhat's the biggest file you have ?14:17
mazalOn your hdd14:18
TaraLSUrh.14:18
TaraLSProbably one of these Videos I converted earlier14:18
mazalDo you have something say in the 4gig range ?14:18
TaraLSBecause of my comp issues, I didn't put any of my saved files onto the HDD.14:18
TaraLSmazal:  Nope.14:18
TaraLSmazal:  My music program, Avid Pro Tools SE, was 7 gigs.14:18
mazalHow big are those videos you have ?14:18
TaraLSThat probably won't install on Ubuntu either.14:18
TaraLSmazal:  One sec. I will check.14:18
TaraLSOne is 1gig14:19
TaraLSThe other around the 400mb range14:19
mazalCan you test something please ?14:19
TaraLSmazal:  Sure.14:19
mazalThey are on external yes ?14:19
TaraLSmazal: No. I saved them to my HDD14:19
TaraLSTo my current Ubuntu install14:19
TaraLS+ation.14:20
mazalI still would like to rule out the drive's interface. So if you want to , boot with the live cd , then select a heap of those video file on your hdd and copy them to a temp folder on the same hdd. I would just like to hear what heppens if that drive and the interface works hard in live14:21
mazalIs up to you if you want to14:22
TaraLSmazal:  What exactly are you saying? 14:22
TaraLSmazal:  You want me to put a bunch of video files onto the LIVE 'HDD' of Ubuntu, not my current install?14:22
mazalI want your hdd to work hard while booted with the live cd14:22
TaraLSmazal:  Every time I restart 'live', though, everything resets.14:22
TaraLSmazal:  I need to reinstall flash and such again.14:23
mazalNo you can access your hdd while in live14:23
TaraLSSo you're talking about my current installation of Ubuntu. You want me to run live whilst my current installation has lots of videos in the HDD?14:23
mazalJust click on home in dash , you will see it there top left but it won't be mounted14:23
TaraLSI don't know what good this test will do. My HDD has been near empty for ages.14:23
mazalYou click on it and it will mount14:23
TaraLSAnd it still freezes/etc14:23
TaraLSOkay. Let me see.14:24
mazalI want to rule out the interface as well14:24
TaraLSIt's saying that all my partitions are mounted already.14:24
mazalAre you in live now ?14:24
TaraLSYes.14:24
TaraLSmazal:  What do you mean by interface?14:25
mazalThe hdd ports on the m/board14:25
TaraLSmazal:  Er. What about them?14:25
mazalThat's what I want to test14:25
mazalBecause they can get faulty too14:25
TaraLSOkay.14:26
mazalBecause they are not working while in live you see14:26
TaraLSWhy not? Wouldn't they be working if all my HDD is mounted?14:26
mazalAnd we need to find out why live is working and when working from the hdd it freezes14:26
TaraLSYes.14:26
mazalNo it's just idling in live14:26
mazalYou not using it14:26
TaraLSAh, okay.14:26
TaraLSNow, no one answered my question before.14:27
mazalThat's why I want you to copy a heap of data around on it so it works on live14:27
mazalAnd the bigger the data the better , is there is a problem on the ports it should then give you trouble while doing a big copy14:28
mazalIs just to make sure TaraLS 14:28
TaraLSmazal:  Okay, I get it, but can you just answer my question first? Just because I'm unclear about something.14:28
mazalWith this type of problem you have to rule out everything one can think of14:28
mazalWhat Q was that ?14:28
TaraLSmazal:  My question was.... My friend gave me extra hard drive space. Does that mean I've got a new hdd altogether with more space, or did he add onto my ORIGINAL Hdd?14:28
mazalNew hdd14:29
mazalYou can't add on14:29
TaraLSmazal: I didn't think so, but wanted to be sure.14:29
TaraLSmazal:  But the HDD PORTS will still be the same, yes?14:29
mazalUNLESS your hdd was already 1tb but only 180gig was patitioned14:29
TaraLSNope.14:29
mazalSame ports yes14:29
TaraLSOkay. So you want me to copy a bunch of files to -where-, exactly?14:29
mazalWait a minute14:30
mazalDid this start immediately after you got the new drive ?14:30
TaraLSNo. I've had it for months now.14:30
mazalOn the previous drive as well14:30
TaraLSYes, that's why I wanted to rule out if it was the same HDD or a different one when upgrading size.14:31
TaraLSBecause that kind of rules out the HDD.14:31
mazalDefnitely rules out the hdd14:31
TaraLSFirst time I remember having a problem was a blue screen with XP, and it happened immediately as I pulled out two flash drives at the same time without unmounting them.14:31
mazalBut not the ports hehehehe14:31
TaraLSmazal:  lol14:31
mazalJust create a temp folder on your hdd and call it whatever you like. Them copy a heap of those videos files to it. Later you can delete them from that temp folder14:32
TaraLSmazal:  Can I put it on the desktop?14:32
mazalNo , the desktop is on the cd currently14:33
TaraLSmazal:  But the desktop will be wiped when I restart in live.14:33
TaraLSmazal:  Yeah.14:33
TaraLSmazal:  Well, it's USB.14:33
TaraLSmazal:  Okay, so... Am I putting it on live, or on my proper Ubuntu-installed HDD?14:33
mazalIn live mode14:33
mazalOr you know what14:34
TaraLSSo how do I avoid going into folders that are on my HDD? I'm still a bit new about all that14:34
TaraLS(I've only had Ubuntu for twoish weeks. Less than)14:34
TaraLSWhat?14:34
mazalThere is batter plan14:34
TaraLSGo for it14:34
mazalActually open one of those videos that is on your hdd and let it play14:34
mazalThat will let the video come from the hdd and not the net14:34
TaraLSWhich will therefore be using the ports?14:35
mazalYep14:35
TaraLSBut isn't that the same as using it whilst in normal Ubuntu-installed mode?14:35
TaraLSOr is it different because we're relying on the ports to transfer the video from the HDD to live?14:35
TaraLS(essentially)14:35
mazalOh ya , you said they play fine14:36
TaraLSlol yeah.14:36
mazalForgot that part sorry14:36
TaraLSNo problem.14:36
mazalAg no , square one14:36
TaraLSHaha14:37
TaraLSYeaaaaah.14:37
TaraLSThanks for your help, though. :)14:37
mazalMust be hardware , but this whole live thing that works keeps messing with that theory14:37
TaraLSHMMM14:40
TaraLSIt boggles.14:40
TaraLSI need kbmonkey. It was his suggestion to run Live and see what happened. I have no idea where he was going with that.14:42
mazalThe thing that bothers me with "it might be software" is that Ubuntu and XP doesn't use the same software14:42
TaraLSOr where he was thinking of going from here.14:42
TaraLSmazal:  Yeah, that's really the only thing.14:42
mazalSo if one thinks that it might have been an ubuntu update that broke it , then XP should have worked fine14:42
TaraLSmazal:  But they DO use the same hardware. Even so, the comp works fine in LIVE, but freezes in INSTALLED Ubuntu.14:43
mazalAnd visa versa14:43
TaraLSmazal:  I'm not thinking it was an Ubuntu update. It's not 'broken' because it was never fixed to begin with.14:43
mazalTherefore it must be hardware related if my logic is ok14:43
TaraLSWhich leads me back to my OTHER question14:43
mazalBut then along comes the live cd that uses the same hardware and works14:43
TaraLSmazal:  How is hardware used on an Installation of Ubuntu, versus just the Live version? And wouldn't it make a difference that Ubuntu is installed at all? Even though I'm not using the Installed Ubuntu?14:44
TaraLSIt's very boggling.14:44
mazalGood point, and points back to the biggest difference between the two , the HDD14:45
TaraLSBut that's eliminated, because I had a different HDD with XP and it had the same problems14:46
mazalYou did plug in all the same peripherals (usb and lpt) devices in Live as you had in the install ?14:46
TaraLSAnd if it was my USB ports, I'd still be freezing even in LIVE because I'm using my USB keyboard/mouse AND the USB Live Ubuntu.14:46
TaraLSmazal:  Yes. I haven't unplugged anything.14:46
mazalRules out 3rd party hardware14:47
mazalish14:47
TaraLSNo ISH about it.14:47
TaraLSIf it was USB, I should be freezing in Live.14:47
TaraLSI'm using USB right now. The LIVE disc itself is a USB flash drive.14:47
mazalAnother difference I can think of is that in live one doesn't install video drivers14:47
TaraLSThe keyboard/mouse is one USB thing, because they're wireless. The USB thing plugged in is the receiver for them.14:47
mazalDid you install video drivers in your actual ubuntu install ?14:47
TaraLSmazal:  I dunno. Apparently Ubuntu does everything when you install it. *shrug*14:48
mazalThat means no14:48
TaraLSI was told that I didn't need to bother installing drivers because Ubuntu does it.14:48
mazalYou have to go to "additional drivers" to install them in ubuntu14:48
TaraLSI think I did that, actually.14:48
mazalI actually hoped you did as that would have been something else to test14:48
TaraLSKilos:  You quiet.14:49
mazalCos that is a defnite difference between live and install14:49
Kilosreading and cooking14:49
mazalAnd it is video related14:49
Kilosshe installed nvidia 173 methinks mazal 14:49
TaraLSKilos:  Oyes.14:49
mazalTara do this one test then14:49
mazalBoot up your install and revert to novue14:50
mazalLet's wee what happens14:50
TaraLSmazal:  I installed 173, and then after that, I installed 'additional drivers'. But BEFORE 173, I installed "current driver" per suggestion of another xchat peep.14:50
TaraLSWhat the heck is novue?14:50
Kilosyou need to explain nicely how mazal 14:50
mazalYou are one 12.10 yes ?14:50
superflyNouveau14:50
TaraLSKilos:  ......14:50
superflythey are the open source nvidia drivers14:50
mazalI think you are on 12.1014:50
TaraLSmazal:  Yep, I am.14:51
TaraLSsuperfly:  Hi Supahflahhh.14:51
mazalOk , you need to go to software sources14:51
TaraLSmazal:  How do I get there? Software Center?14:51
Kilosit froze before 173 was installed14:51
mazalThen at the top tabs go to additional drivers14:51
mazalAg nee man !!!14:51
TaraLSHahaha14:51
mazalThere goes that test as well14:51
TaraLSrofl14:51
TaraLSSorry.14:51
TaraLSIt sucks, I know. Very frustrating.14:51
superflyTaraLS: hello TaraLeeeeeeeeeeeee14:51
Kilosthats why we did additional drivers14:52
Kiloslol @ superfly 14:52
mazalo.........k14:52
mazalShees , what else differs from live and install ?14:52
Kiloslots14:52
Kilosall the update/upgrades14:53
Kilos450 updates14:53
TaraLSmazal: One of my XP blue screens was 'nvd4.exe' or something.... and I updated the nvidia driver and didn't get that blue screen again, but still got freezing and other blue screens.14:53
mazalSoftware it is not14:53
mazalKilos if it was updates then only ubuntu would do it14:53
TaraLSmazal: And one of my blue screens in XP was due to the ethernet card 'rltk.exe' or some such... So I updated THAT, and didn't get that blue screen again, but comp was STILL freezing.14:53
TaraLSThis might seem stupid, but.... Is there a way that updates could annoy hardware if the hardware is set to something DIFFERENT from the update, in the BIOS?14:54
superflyTaraLS: you can try the experimental nVidia drivers, dunno if that'll make a difference14:54
TaraLSAlso, before we talk more about the nvidia drivers...14:55
TaraLSI took out the graphics card and used the onboard one, and the comp still froze.14:55
TaraLSSo I don't think it's that.14:55
mazalTara driver updates can defnitely make hardware malfunction. It does happen sometimes14:55
superflyTaraLS: what is your onboard card?14:55
TaraLSsuperfly:  I dunno. How do I check what it is?14:55
superflylspci should show it14:56
superfly(from the terminal)14:56
TaraLSError mounting /dev/fd0 at /media/ubuntu/disk: Command-line `mount -t "auto" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid" "/dev/fd0" "/media/ubuntu/disk"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: block device /dev/fd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: /dev/fd0: can't read superblock14:56
TaraLSStupid piece of kak computer. I DON'T HAVE A FLOPPY DRIVE.14:56
TaraLSHow do I turn this off? What if all my problems are this STUPID virtual floppy drive?14:56
superflyTaraLS: a setting in your bios?14:57
TaraLSsuperfly:  I already disabled it.14:57
TaraLShttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1372570/14:57
superflymkay14:57
superflyTaraLS: your graphics card is not plugged in at the moment, am I right?14:59
TaraLSsuperfly:  It is. My Nvidia one. Unity interface actually doesn't work with the onboard one.14:59
TaraLSsuperfly:  It's #12 on that pastebin. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] (rev a1)15:00
superflyoh... Hrm15:00
mazalIs see it's also a 9000 GT range card15:00
superflyI'll hazard a guess that your built in card is an Intel15:01
mazalI don't know if it's relevant , but remember the major issues I had with mine on 12.10 ?15:01
KilosTaraLS, do you hear the bloep when your nick is mentioned15:01
TaraLSKilos:  Yep.15:01
Kilosnow you know what i meant inna blog15:01
Kiloshehe15:01
TaraLSKilos:  What blog?15:01
Kilosdunno what else to call it15:01
TaraLSKilos:  Oh riiiiight.15:01
TaraLSKilos:  It essentially is a bloep, yeah. Though it sounds more like a... 'tep'. lol15:02
Kiloswhew15:02
TaraLSmazal:  What issues did you have with your card?15:03
Kilosits a bloep15:03
TaraLSmazal:  And since Live works with my card (which is obvious, since the Unity interface is working), why would it work on the HDD and not here in Live?15:03
mazalAnd you ruled it out by unplugging it anyway15:03
TaraLSKilos:  lol okay. I'm not gonna argue about a little blip sound with you. :P15:03
TaraLSmazal:  Yeah. Essentially.15:03
mazalTara I had major performance issues as well as a broken desktop15:04
TaraLSmazal:  I wish I had thought to unplug it when I had XP. Because maybe XP interface works fine with onboard graphics, unlike Unity.15:04
superflyTaraLS: Live is either using the nouveau drivers if you are using the nvidia, or the Intel drivers15:04
superflyXP doesn't know the meaning of 3D (or compositing)15:05
TaraLSsuperfly:  Well, it wouldn't use the onboard ones. because I can see the Unity interface. When I' musing just the onboard graphics, the little taskbar with the icons disappears, as well as the bar at the top with the x, =, minimize, and the clock etc15:05
TaraLS-*15:05
TaraLSWhy would I have a problem out of the blue with my graphics card, anyway?15:06
TaraLSA problem that wasn't solved by updating drivers?15:06
superflyOften mutiple versions of drivers have the same bug in them15:07
superflyI had that with 12.0415:07
TaraLSsuperfly: Well, I didn't update the driver to cause my problems to start. So that means that the driver it came with must have got a bug itself?15:07
superflyI had to install the experimental drivers from nVidia15:07
superflyTaraLS: possibly15:08
TaraLSsuperfly:  How?15:08
superflyTaraLS: how do the drivers come complete with bugs, or how did I upgrade to experimental?15:10
TaraLSsuperfly:  Nonono.15:10
TaraLSsuperfly: I haven't had problems since I had my computer.15:10
TaraLSsuperfly:  I've had my computer for three years. My problems started roughly eightish months ago when I pulled out two mounted flash drives at the same time (resulting in a blue screen).15:10
TaraLSsuperfly: That means that, for two years and fourish months, my graphics card was fine.15:11
TaraLSsuperfly: What would make it suddenly unfine, if I didn't download the latest drivers for it?15:11
superflyTaraLS: well, my current pc has a weird problem where my usb system falls over... Not sure why. I have to get my PS2 keyboard and restart my pc15:12
TaraLSIt 'falls over'?15:13
superflyTaraLS: yes, the usb driver seems to crash.15:13
TaraLSsuperfly:  Oh. What happens when it crashes?15:13
superflyMy keyboard and mouse stop working15:15
superflyand any other usb device.15:15
TaraLSAhh, right.15:16
superflyEverything else works fine. If I didn't have a USB keyboard and mouse I likely wouldn't even know about it.15:16
TaraLSDoes Ubuntu Live come with its own temporary drivers that it uses over the drivers on the HDD?15:16
superfly(I'd like to see Windows do that)15:17
* TaraLS rofls.15:17
superflyTaraLS: yup15:17
TaraLSsuperfly:  So maybe it IS a driver issue? But WHICH ONE?15:17
* TaraLS hyperventilates.15:17
TaraLSCuz even though I've used two different OSs, they still have the same drivers because I've still got the same hardware.15:17
TaraLSHow do I roll back all driver updates on Ubuntu?15:18
superflyTaraLS: you still have Ubuntu on the PC?15:18
TaraLSsuperfly:  Yes. 15:18
TaraLSsuperfly:  I'm running Live from my USB flash drive. Ubuntu is still installed on my PC, but I'm using Live at present.15:19
TaraLSLive has been on for at least 24 hours straight now, and no freezes. Not with watching Youtube, or letting the comp idle/go into screensaver, or converting video from URL to MPEG4 in VLC... nothing. It's running fine.15:19
superflyhrm. If indeed it is a driver issue, you can try installing either the experimental nVidia drivers, or nouveau as mazal suggested15:19
TaraLSWhat if it's not graphics-related?15:20
TaraLSAnd what exactly ARE the 'experimental nVidia drivers'? Why are they experimental? What are they testing?15:20
TaraLSCould it be my internet cable?15:21
TaraLSInto my ethernet?15:21
mazalNope15:21
superflyI don't know what it would be otherwise, cause otherwise your PC would still be falling over15:21
mazalYou using it in live also15:21
TaraLSI have the internet connection wireless on a USB thing. Should I try that?15:21
TaraLSmazal:  Right... Darn.15:21
mazalhehehe15:21
TaraLSmazal:  lol.15:21
mazalIt must be something not used during live15:21
TaraLSmazal:  Yeah... but WHAT?15:21
* TaraLS is so frustratedddd.15:22
TaraLSMy nVidia HAS to be used during Live, otherwise the Unity interface would not work.15:22
mazalSounds to me you guys tested about everything already15:22
mazalBUT15:22
superflyTaraLS: the experimental drivers are an early release of the next version15:22
superflyor, use nouveau15:22
TaraLSSo nouveau is for onboard?15:23
mazalPress and hold the windows key for me Tara and see if the window with the shortcut keys come up15:23
TaraLSBut that still doesn't rule out why the nVidia works in Live, if it is apparently freezing HDD-Ubuntu.15:23
superflyTaraLS: try running this: sudo modprobe -l15:23
TaraLSAre either of these things, superfly and mazal, going to take me to a window where I need to type another command to get back?15:23
mazalTara that key press won't take you away15:24
superflyTaraLS: no, you can type mine in the terminal15:24
TaraLSmazal:  Oyes. The windows key does bring up a list of commands.15:24
mazalJust want to know if a window with shortcuts is displayed now when you hold the windows button15:24
TaraLSShortcuts, I mean.15:25
mazalTara that means that your live session is indeed running in Unity 3d mode15:25
TaraLSmazal:  Yeah. So, it's not my graphics card.15:25
superflymazal: but it is most probably using the nouveau driver15:25
TaraLSBut I could tell you already that it was - since I can see my Unity stuff--the sidebar with the icons, the clock, the minimize/etc15:25
mazalIf it wasn't the shortcuts doesn't come up and only puts numbers on your shortcuts on the launcher15:25
mazalI agree superfly , novue15:25
mazalTara you will see all of those in 2d as well15:26
TaraLSmazal:  No, I don't see them when I'm running my onboard graphics.15:26
mazalSo , ten to 1 your live is running in 3d with novue drivers15:26
mazalBUT15:26
TaraLSsuperfly:  You want me to copy/pastebin aaaaall the stuff that comes up with that command?15:27
mazalWhen running novue on your install (like Kilos said) it also freezes15:27
TaraLSThere's that stupid floppy disk error again. Good grief.15:27
superflyTaraLS: yes please15:27
mazalBack to square one15:27
TaraLSmazal:  lolol15:27
mazalUNLESS15:27
mazalNovue has an update that gets installed and causes it ?15:28
TaraLSmazal:  But then why did I have issues in XP?15:28
TaraLSmazal:  Is Nouveueueueueueuau (too many useless letters; stupid word) in XP too, or specific to Ubuntu?15:28
mazal**sigh** , yes , then there is that again15:28
* superfly has to go15:28
mazalThen we are back at why did XP do it as well15:28
TaraLSsuperfly:  Eish. Have fun... http://paste.ubuntu.com/1372635/15:29
TaraLSGASP.15:29
TaraLSkernel/lib/cpu-notifier-error-inject.ko <-- What does this mean?15:29
* mazal has to go for now also15:30
TaraLS:(15:31
mazalThis whole thing has gotten me behind with all my work hehehehe15:31
TaraLSOops15:31
TaraLSWell thanks very much for trying to help, mazal.15:31
mazalSorry I couldn't help15:31
mazalUsed up all my ideas :P15:31
TaraLSThat's alright. Seems like no one can. My problem is so hideously... not normal.15:31
mazalA strange one for sure15:31
mazalOom Kilos15:32
mazalYou here ?15:32
Kilossec just catching up here15:32
Kilosyou peeps chat jong15:33
mazalI think oom Kilo's idea needs checking15:33
mazalFresh install , no updates , nada , nothing15:33
mazalAnd see what happens15:33
mazalIF Tara has any strength left15:33
mazalAnd patience left :)15:34
Kilosim back15:34
TaraLSmazal:  Eurk....15:34
mazalhehehehe15:34
Kiloswent for sheep15:34
TaraLSmazal:  Well... That's ESSENTIALLY what I was getting at - with wanting to rollback ALL updates.15:34
TaraLSI guess that's the only way to do it.15:34
mazalCan't rollback the updates15:34
mazalThe video yes , but not all the others15:34
TaraLSYou know15:34
Kilostara the install will go smooth but you gotta be online with another pc or fone so i can tell what to do15:34
TaraLSThe first time my comp was reformatted15:34
TaraLSIt worked for a week15:35
TaraLSWithout issues.15:35
TaraLSGranted, I didn't install anything, far as I know. And I can't remember if I watched Youtube or not.15:35
Kiloswindows most likely had lotsa bugs on the hdd15:35
mazalAnd maybe rather 12.04 oom Kilos ? What you think. 12.10 by itself is a bit buggy15:35
TaraLSKilos:  Can I just install Ubuntu itself, or do I have to redo the whole folders /spare/storage/etc thing again?15:35
Kilos12.04 is good methinks15:35
TaraLS12.10 is fine for me.15:35
mazalI think so. Tara if you willing it is worth a tray15:35
TaraLSJust... duh. My computer is freezing. lol15:36
mazaltry even15:36
Kilosyou just need to make sure they still named that TaraLS 15:36
TaraLSI really don't want to have redo all those folders.15:36
mazalFresh install off 12.04.0115:36
Kilosand dont format  them15:36
mazalThen no updates at all15:36
TaraLSWait wait15:36
TaraLSWhy do I have to go to 12.04?15:36
mazalJust promise me one thing Tara15:36
TaraLSWhat?15:36
Kilosubuntu dont work properly without the first updates15:36
mazalBecause 12.10 is very buggy and have performance issues15:36
TaraLSmazal:  But I haven't had issues with 12.1015:37
mazalTara , you don't kill me if it doesn't help :P15:37
Kilos12.04 is older and most bugs been fixed15:37
TaraLSOi15:37
TaraLSI think I will just wait for kbmonkey15:37
mazalIs an option that is up to you hehehehe15:37
TaraLSAnd see what he says about Live not freezing.15:37
TaraLSSince that was his suggestion.15:37
TaraLSI want to see what he has to say about that.15:37
Kilospsu?15:37
mazalIMO I won't use 12.10 with what I've experienced15:37
Kilosoh live put that out\15:37
Kilosor didnt it15:38
Kiloshdd was drawing less power15:38
TaraLSBefore I do anything else requiring big changes (like a reinstall), I want to chat with kbmonkey.15:38
Kilosok wait for him15:38
mazalok :)15:38
TaraLSOkay. :)15:38
Kilosmaybe till weekend15:38
* TaraLS stress level averted.15:38
mazalWe tried hehehehe15:38
Kiloswill try mail him to find out when15:38
TaraLSKilos:  Really? :( He's not on 'til weekend?15:38
TaraLSKilos:  Okay.15:38
TaraLSWhew. It's such a peculiar issue.15:38
Kiloswhat did the monkey say TaraLS 15:39
Kilosrun from live why?15:39
mazalOk , nou moet ek rerig eers gaan15:39
TaraLSI can't recall. I think he just said "Try running from Live and see what happens"15:39
TaraLSWe didn't go too much into it.15:40
Kilosmooi loop mazal 15:40
TaraLSI wasn't expecting Live to make a difference.15:40
TaraLSWhich it has.15:40
Kilosdankie15:40
mazalTara15:40
Kilosty supahhflaahhh15:40
TaraLSmazal:  Yes?15:40

TaraLSKilos:  lol15:40
* mazal runs away15:40
TaraLSmazal:  lol, shush you.15:40
TaraLSmazal:  Just waiting is WAY less stressful than doing a fresh reinstall.15:40
mazalhehehehe sorry couldn't resist :)15:40
TaraLSKilos:  With Kilos' help, bless his heart. :P15:40
Kiloshehe15:40
mazalNot with Ubuntu Tara15:41
Kilosyou will see once used to it it works like a charm15:41
TaraLSmazal:  No, trust me. It's pretty stressful. 15:41
* TaraLS ogles Kilos.15:41
mazalLike Kilos said , most of your partitions are not even gonna get formatted15:41
Kilosand you lose nothing15:41
TaraLSANYHOO15:41
mazalOnly / and /boot15:41
TaraLSAs I said, I will wait for kbmonkey. :P15:41
Kilosya15:41
mazalHardekwas :)15:41
TaraLSDepending on where we get, then maybe I will do a fresh reinstall.15:42
Kilosbut in 12.02 you still have to just tell it what to call them15:42
Kiloslol @ mazal 15:42
TaraLSBesides15:42
Kilosbaie15:42
TaraLSSwitching to 12.04 is not going to solve the freezing issue15:42
TaraLSBecause it has frozen in 12.10 and in XP15:42
TaraLSSo... yes.15:42
mazalHoe hou oom dit uit ? lol15:42

TaraLSkbmonkey:  So here's the shpiel. If Linux has a version of itself (Kubuntu vs Ubuntu, whatever) that can run my Lexmark printer and Genius tablet, I will so DEFINITELY reinstall with that.18:49

nlsthznTaraLS, awesome, welcome and nice to meet you... 18:57

Kiloswhich modprobe you did kiddo19:12
Kilostoo far to scroll back19:12
TaraLSThis is the one for my HDD Ubuntu19:12
TaraLSI'm on the HDD now, not the USB19:13
kbmonkeyyour HDD has nvidia drivers. the live does not. 19:13
kbmonkeyI'd bet big bucks there is a issue19:13

TaraLSKilos,  sudo modprobe -l19:13
Kilosty19:13
TaraLSkbmonkey,  Okay, so... Whut dew I dew?19:13
TaraLSSo my graphics card obviously works without the drivers, because I can see Unity interface fine on Live.19:14
kbmonkeywe can find you step TaraLS how to remove nvidia and use the nouveau drivers.19:14
TaraLSkbmonkey, Okay.19:14
kbmonkeynouveau are the open source equivalent of nvidia. they do the same thing basically.19:14
nlsthznbut they suck at gaming19:14
TaraLSThat's what Superfly was saying19:14
TaraLSBut I wanted to wait for youuuu19:14
nlsthznok ok I am going to bed sheese19:14

TaraLSI don't do gaming on my PC anyway.19:15
TaraLSsuperfly,  Ohallo.19:15
Kiloskbmonkey, it froze before we went for the nvidia drivers19:15
kbmonkeyaaaawe :]19:15
superflymy ears were burning19:15
TaraLSsuperfly,  The modprobe for Live does not have my nVidia drivers, whereas my current HDD installation does.19:15
kbmonkeyhi superfly !19:15
TaraLSkbmonkey,  Are there other differences?19:15
kbmonkeysuperfly, i got TaraLS to cat her apt/history, the live uses nouveau, her install uses nvidia19:16
TaraLSkbmonkey,  Because, yes, it froze before we went for the nvidia drivers (actually manually installing them). That's why we went and got them.19:16
TaraLSkbmonkey,  To see if it would stop the freeze.19:16
TaraLSing. Freezing.19:16
superflyTaraLS: that's not your full modprobe output19:16
superflykbmonkey: yeah, that's what I thought19:16
TaraLSsuperfly, I just did the command you said to do.19:16
kbmonkeyI got her to cat it to a text file19:17
superflyTaraLS: it looks like you are in good hands... kbmonkey got you to capture all of it19:17
kbmonkeyI say we find steps to remove nvidia and use nouveau. its a good place to start.19:17
TaraLSOkay.19:17
kbmonkeystrange, my modprobe has no -l option19:18
kbmonkeyanyway...19:18
TaraLSlol19:18
kbmonkeylet me Google-Fu some steps...19:18
TaraLSkk19:18
confluencyIt's in the repository.  If you install it it should uninstall all the nvidia drivers that clash with it.19:19
confluencyAnd vice-versa.19:19
TaraLSconfluency,  Ooh, a new brainstormer. Hello. :)19:19
confluencyHello19:19
TaraLSI have to be honest... I feel a tiny bit on edge in my installed Ubuntu, lol. I have no idea when it will freeze.19:20
Kilosshup19:20
kbmonkeynouveau is installed by default, on top of nvidia. I suspect removing nvidia will then fall back on nouveau. but I like to confirm this before we do...19:20
TaraLSKilos,  O.o ?19:21
Kiloshehe19:21
kbmonkeyoh confluency, yey, hi19:21
confluencyInstalling nvidia may well remove nouveau, so I wouldn't just uninstall nvidia.19:21
Kilosdont be afraid you in good hands19:21
TaraLSKilos,  Not afraid. Apprehensive.19:21
TaraLSUncertain.19:21
confluencyTry installing nouveau; apt will probably ask if it's OK to remove your nvidia drivers.19:21
Kilosdont be it can be fixed19:21
Kilosclean install19:21
confluencyBuuuut19:22
TaraLSconfluency,  Okay, but I don't know how to install nouveau. That's what I'm waiting for.19:22
TaraLSKilos,  If I do a clean install, I want to install XP too so I can use my stupid tablet.19:22
confluencyHow did you install the old nvidia drivers?19:22
Kilosi would use synaptic to remove it19:22
TaraLSconfluency, At first, I was told that Ubuntu should install the drivers itself. 19:22
confluencyYou can install all the drivers from the repository, and there are newer versions in a PPA.19:22
TaraLSconfluency,  Then, I got the 'current driver' and then the '173 driver' and then the 'additional drivers' to try stop the comp from freezing.19:22
TaraLSWhat's the repository?19:23
confluencySomething may have been installed automatically during your initial install, but I don't know about it specifically.19:23
Kilosplace where packages are downloaded from19:23
TaraLSKilos,  Well, that would be synaptic.19:23
Kilosrepo19:23
confluencySynaptic is a graphic front-end to apt, which is the Ubuntu packae manager.19:23
Kilosno its inna sky19:23
TaraLSlol19:24
confluencyapt gets its packages from repositories.19:24
Kiloswhere your update manager gets them from19:24
confluencyA PPA is an unofficial repository that you have to enable.19:24
TaraLSOkay.19:24
Kilosbut synaptic shows19:24
TaraLSI'm getting confused now.19:24
TaraLSIn any case, I will wait for kbmonkey  to confirm19:24
TaraLSHe's looking to see if we can just install nouveau and they will automatically uninstall nvidia19:24
confluencyI recommend using command-line apt utilities instead of Synaptic; you get more unambiguous feedback (which it is also easier to paste into IRC).19:25
Kilosconfluency, you think the nvidia ppa will help?19:25
kbmonkeythat ubuntu service that detects hardware probably put in as an update?19:25
kbmonkeyTaraLS, can you run this for me in a terminal please:19:25
kbmonkeydpkg --list | grep nouveau19:25
kbmonkeylook for "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau"19:26
confluencyKilos: it might help if a bug is fixed in the newest driver version, but it may not make any difference.19:26
TaraLSkbmonkey,  ii  xserver-xorg-video-nouveau                1:1.0.2-0ubuntu3                          i386         X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver19:26
kbmonkeythe 'ii' means it is installed :)19:26
TaraLSkbmonkey,  Well that's annoying.19:26
confluencyWhat if you dpkg -l | grep nvidia     ?19:26
confluencyTaraLS: how did you install the nvidia drivers?19:27
kbmonkeyconfluency here is the apt history, http://slexy.org/raw/s20J7tnBny19:27
TaraLShttp://slexy.org/view/s21jruLGw319:27
kbmonkeyconfluency, would you agree we could do this:19:29
kbmonkeysudo apt-get purge nvidia-settings nvidia-common nvidia-current19:30
confluencyOK, so maybe nvidia and nouveau don't uninstall each other. I may have been thinking of different nvidia versions.  There must be another way of picking which one you want to use.19:30
confluencyYes, you could.  You think it will fall back to nouveau automatically?19:30
kbmonkeyI think 'jockey' detected and installed nvidia. I don't know much about jockey though.19:30
* TaraLS waits.19:30
confluencyTaraLS: you mentioned installing other nvidia drivers -- how did you install them? I can only see nvidia-current in the apt history.19:31
TaraLSI installed them using Dash19:31
TaraLSKilos,  Shush.19:31
kbmonkeyyes I do confluency. it says that nouveau are in by default, and that they dont have to be removed -- https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia19:31
kbmonkeysadly that wiki does not tell how to *remove* nvidia. lol!19:31
confluencyWhat's Dash?19:31
kbmonkeyDash is like Bash19:32
confluencyI'm worried that there are other nvidia versions floating around that the package manager knows nothing about.19:32
TaraLSExcept with a D.19:32
Kilosits a kinda launcher with search capabilities19:32
kbmonkeyOhhh, the launcher dash, not the shell :p19:32
confluencyBut what did you do in order to install it? What commands did you use?19:32
kbmonkeyso many names19:32
Kilosshe looked for drivers in dash19:33
TaraLSconfluency,  I didn't use commands. I searched 'driver' in Dash, and it showed me the drivers I could install, and then I clicked the little driver icons, and clicked 'install'19:33
Kilosand it gave additional drivers19:33
TaraLSIt gave additional drivers, and 'current driver', and '172 driver', etc19:33
Kilos17319:33
superflykbmonkey: jockey is the actual program name of the "Additional Drivers" window19:33
kbmonkeyyes that sounds like jockey, to install drivers19:33
TaraLSoop, typo19:33
TaraLSKilos,  ty19:33
Kilosyw19:34
kbmonkeyah superfly, I believe we can purge the nvidia packages, and since we know neavou is still isntalled. 19:34
kbmonkey--> sudo apt-get purge nvidia-settings nvidia-common nvidia-current19:34
TaraLSkbmonkey,  Should I do that then?19:34
TaraLSAre we all in agreement?19:34
confluencyOK, I can see that those packages are available in the standard repositories, but according to your dpkg output you don't currently have those packages installed. Do you remember if you installed the current driver last?19:35

TaraLSWaiiiit wait. So I should restart now? (Without doing auto-remove since it's not related)?19:44
Kilosauto remove first kiddo19:45
TaraLSI'll have to leave the comp on for a day and use it throughout said day to test if it worked. Or wait for it to freeze. Whichever comes first.19:45
kbmonkeysure you can autoremove now if you like to satisfy that ocd. I know I do.19:45

kbmonkeyi know, that fd0 error is filling up your log :p20:58
kbmonkeyit probably pushed down the messages we want to see. eish20:58
TaraLSWhat if the floppy drive IS the message we want to see?20:59
kbmonkeyhmmm20:59
kbmonkeywe want to see messages around the time it froze21:00
TaraLSMaybe the floppy drive is what is causing the freezing... >.>21:00
kbmonkeywe can turn the floppy drive off in your bios settings21:02
TaraLSI disabled it already. :| That's the annoying thing.21:03
TaraLSLemme go see. brb.21:03

kbmonkeyit will cleverly give us the logs around the time you froze21:05
TaraLSWhy didn't you give me that one before? :P21:05
kbmonkeyI took the time from irc when you said it froze, 21:05
kbmonkeycos I... um.. darn.21:05
TaraLSlolol21:05
kbmonkeycos I did not think.21:05
* kbmonkey shuffles feet21:05
TaraLShttp://slexy.org/view/s20fLlYdYm21:06
kbmonkeyif you did reset your bios recently, it could have put the floppy back on21:06
TaraLS......21:06
TaraLSBut I've disabled it since then21:07
TaraLShttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/38457921:08
TaraLSBlah, popup error (got it before): Unable to mount floppy drive. Error mounting /dev/fd0 at /media/tara-lynn/disk23: Command-line `mount -t "auto" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid" "/dev/fd0" "/media/tara-lynn/disk23"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: block device /dev/fd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only21:09
TaraLSmount: /dev/fd0: can't read superblock21:09
TaraLSA work around is to blacklist the floppy module:21:11
TaraLSsudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf21:11
TaraLSadd21:11
TaraLSblacklist floppy21:11
TaraLSand then run update-initramfs:21:11
TaraLSsudo update-initramfs -u21:11
TaraLSHth21:11
TaraLS?21:11
kbmonkeythe log only shows a bunch of UFW -- firewall, blocks every 20-30 seconds21:13
kbmonkeyweird, its from google. anyway.21:14
kbmonkeyum, not sure if you have to blacklist it. may just need to turn it off in the bios.21:14
kbmonkeysay, how much disk space do you have free on your / (root)21:15
TaraLSOkay. Lemme go back to BIOS and see. brb.21:15
TaraLSUh21:15
TaraLS32.8 GB21:15
kbmonkeyif you browse to Filesystem21:15
TaraLS:P21:15
kbmonkeyjust checking. if / fills up it causes weird errors. especially if your logs get spammed with stuff ;)21:16
TaraLSOh I see21:16
TaraLSSee21:18
TaraLSI opened up 'home'21:18
TaraLSAnd on the left, you know how it has "Computer: Home, desktop, documents" etc?21:18
TaraLSAt the top, it has "Devices: Floppy Disk" GYAH21:18
kbmonkeyyes, go there to filesystem21:18
TaraLSWhat do you want me to do in filesystem?21:20
TaraLSkbmonkey, 21:21
kbmonkeyjust see how much space there is. it is different than your home space21:21
TaraLSI know.21:21
TaraLSKilos told me to do that.21:21
TaraLS"Give /root 30g, etc etc"21:22
kbmonkeythat bug report is from 2009, it says a fix is released21:22
kbmonkeysigh, im not sure what to suggest :(21:22
TaraLSkbmonkey,  Well, that guy says his comp was hanging and he got that weirdo floppy drive error, just like me. So... maybe that is what it is.21:22
TaraLSkbmonkey,  How do I get the fix?21:22
kbmonkeytry turning off the floppy again21:22
kbmonkeyin the bios21:22
TaraLSOkay, to the BIOS! brb21:22
kbmonkeythe fix is already in your ubuntu21:22
kbmonkeyyes :)21:22
TaraLSOkay, well. It was already off.21:27
TaraLS1st: HDD21:27
TaraLS2nd: CDROM21:27

kbmonkeythose are your boot options?21:27
TaraLSNo21:27
TaraLSThat's how it is set21:27
TaraLSMy boot options are21:27
TaraLSHDD, CDROM, Geek Squad Flash Drive (when it's plugged in, that's where my Live Ubuntu is), and "1ST Floppy Drive.21:28
kbmonkeydoes it look kinda like this http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/motherboards/asus/a7v600/mainbios.jpg21:29
TaraLSNope. o_o21:30
TaraLSLemme go take a pic. brb.21:30
kbmonkeydarn.21:30
TaraLSkbmonkey,  It actually did look similar to that.21:36
kbmonkeylol21:36
kbmonkeyok, and the "Legacy Diskette A/B" ones said None?21:37
TaraLSHang on.21:37
TaraLSI took photos.21:37
TaraLSLegacy Diskette was on something else, and I selected 'disabled'21:38
TaraLSBut I could still select '1ST floppy drive' in my 'boot' tab21:38
kbmonkeywe can ignore the boot tab, the bios isn't too clever to hide it 21:39
TaraLShttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v211/Krice_Verta/SAM_0726.jpg21:39
kbmonkeyok, so you changed it from xyz to Disabled, and pressed F10 to save21:40
kbmonkeyit should be turned off then21:41
TaraLShttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v211/Krice_Verta/SAM_0727.jpg21:41
TaraLShttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v211/Krice_Verta/SAM_0728.jpg21:42

TaraLShttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v211/Krice_Verta/SAM_0730.jpg21:44
TaraLSThere we go21:44
kbmonkeyok, it looks good 21:45
TaraLSnow how do I check if the comp is still id0ing?21:45
TaraLSif0*21:45
TaraLSOoh. Well, my home thingy isn't showing 'floppy drive' under devices anymore21:46
TaraLSJust my camera (which is currently plugged in)21:46
TaraLSI shall again attempt to convert url then? See if it freezes?21:46
kbmonkeygood idea. 21:47
kbmonkeyI cant say that is the error, but its good to try all options :)21:47
TaraLSYeah.21:48
TaraLSGotta rule it out.21:48
TaraLSNow I will play music and go lie down, and if my music stops, then I know the comp has frozen.21:49
TaraLSDarn it.21:49
kbmonkeyalready?!21:50
kbmonkeyI'm going to bed, good luck with the un-freezing TaraLS 21:54
TaraLSDarn. :(21:55

TaraLSWhew. Comp froze (and I couldn't restart using ctrl+alt+shift+printscr+reisub; I tried), aaand yeah.22:46
TaraLSCore temps go up really quickly when streaming video and trying to convert22:46
