nencinipHello to everyone03:02
nencinipSome one have exprience on Xfce 4.10 and set dual head monitor resolution ?03:03
well_laid_lawnnencinip: what part are you having trouble with?03:04
nencinipi'm try to set a Radeon 9200 (rv280) to dual head, with different monitor resolution03:07
nenciniphowever, the result is, all 2 monitor have same res. Why?03:07
pgibhey guys. I really want to install 12.10, but I cannot get it to show up in my update manager.  http://xubuntu.org/upgrading/  I don't see anything about a new Xubuntu release. Synaptic shows the latest version of xubuntu packages as 12.04.11...03:08
well_laid_lawnare you using amd's proprietry graphics driver?03:08
well_laid_lawnnencinip: ^03:09
well_laid_lawnpgib: have you updated ?03:09
nencinipi suppose that are the open one, lsmod return "radeon"03:10
well_laid_lawnnencinip: you should be able to set that up in xfce's display settings afaik03:11
well_laid_lawnyou  might need to use something like arandr03:11
well_laid_lawn!info arandr03:11
ubottuarandr (source: arandr): Simple visual front end for XRandR. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.1.6-1 (quantal), package size 62 kB, installed size 456 kB03:11
tinahhey, any alternative to network-manager and wicd to connect/manage wireless connection?03:11
tinahnetwork-manager seems so buggy03:12
nencinipi've tried to set XFCE using display.xml, but result is ever 1° monitor res= 2° monitor res03:12
pgibwell_laid_lawn, I've done "check for updates" and have updated everything, except for two tor packages that won't upgrade anymore because they aren't from authenticated sources..03:13
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se
well_laid_lawnnencinip: see if arandr helps   sudo apt-get install arandr03:14
nencinipgoiing to trying arand... (thanks at now)03:14
well_laid_lawnpgib: I don't know why it wouldn't show. you might need to try the command line option03:15
pgibI've tried 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade'03:17
=== nyR3dnek is now known as nyRednek
pgibis there a special repository for 12.10?03:17
pgibahha "Only notify me of new LTS versions" was selected.  But now, it says "New Ubuntu release '12.10' is available"  I don't want Ubuntu though...03:18
well_laid_lawnit checks what packages you have and upgrades those03:19
well_laid_lawnubuntu and xubuntu use the same repos03:19
well_laid_lawnso it will upgrade xfce not add unity03:19
pgibok, I know they differ mainly by the default packages, I just didn't want it to pull in god-awful Gnome03:20

skumarHi, I'm thinking of installing Xubuntu, I've been using KDE for the past 6 years and Gnome before that.06:20
skumarLooking for something snappy, but read reviews that Xubuntu is getting bigger and bigger06:21
skumarand losing the snapiness. Is it all wrong and should I go ahead and setup and configure06:21
skumaror are they right ...and I won't see a lot of difference between Xubuntu and Kubuntu ?06:22
ruieni'm sure it's getting bigger and bigger, but so is everything else. I think Xfce is a fantastic desktop environment and less resource-intensive than KDE. But if you ask about speed, i'm not sure. They may both be fast if you have sufficient RAM, but likely Xfce will use less of that RAM.06:23
ruienBut, i personally use Xfce because i like the design best, not because it's faster than some other environment06:24
skumarok06:39
skumarIf I look at it from the very top ...it is quite sad that none of the distributions I've tried U/Kubuntu, Suse are snappy in the long run when compared to windows.06:41
skumarmaybe it is fast in the beginning but it eventaully slows down.06:41
skumarI don't know what it is ...whether it is resource allocation and book-keeping or if it is window manager.06:42
skumarI'll give X/Lubuntu a try and see.06:44
xubuntu528downloaded a live image of xubuntu 12.10 and booted my laptop with it, but when I try to install to hard disk by clicking on the desktop icon, nothing appears to happen06:49
xubuntu528tried using terminal to type the command, but it throws up an error "Fatal Python error: Py_Initilaize: Unable to get the locale encoding"06:52
xubuntu528any suggestions?06:53
tomylhi I'm running xubuntu 12.04 and firefox is misbehaving after installing latest updates, if I try to resize the window it becomes very small and freezes, is this a known problem already?07:56
tomylhappens with fresh firefox profile (no addons) too07:58
tomylseems to affect thunderbird too07:58
ms_and, how to run "metacity" by default when I just open my desktop??09:02
ms_could someone tell something here? no???09:11
frogman1984no idea sorry...09:12
ms_doesn't matter, it's already ok :) but now, how to activate "window manager", and "window manager tweaks" please?09:14

Mike-Linux-NLHello :)09:16
Mike-Linux-NLDoes somebody else has the issue in Xubuntu on a laptop that the external mouse is freezing randomly?09:17
Mike-Linux-NLtrackpad works still fine when mouse freezes up.09:17
tomatopotatointeresting09:18
frogman1984Mike-Linux-NL not yet...09:18
ruienI've used xubuntu 12.04 on three laptops since april and have not seen that problem.09:18
Mike-Linux-NLi think its the latest kernel update that caused it09:18
well_laid_lawncheck dmesg in a terminal09:18
Mike-Linux-NLand i must say, its very very annoying :)09:18
ms_Mike-Linux-NL, everytime I got it I push the power button, oops!!!09:19
Mike-Linux-NLwell, when it freezes up, i have to click a few times, and then it starts working again. its not the mouse, cause under windows it keeps working fine with no issues at all.. when using the trackpad i dont have that issue. but it seems that xubuntu can not handle trackpad and external wireless mouse at the same time09:19
ruienand nothing related in `dmesg` at all?09:20
tomatopotatohrmm sounds like mouse goes in sleep mode or something lol09:20
Mike-Linux-NLi havent had that issue before. and i see a lot of bugs being filed on launchpad related to the same issue. it seems to apply on all *buntu derivates in 12.04 and 12.1009:21
well_laid_lawncan be a usb port starting to fail09:21
well_laid_lawntoo09:21
Mike-Linux-NLruien: no, cause it works after a few secs again09:21
tomatopotatowelll then its a bug i guess, do they have any solution to this on launchpad?09:21
Mike-Linux-NLyeah.. i have 4... happens on all of them09:21
frogman1984Infra Red sensor?? :-)09:21
Mike-Linux-NLno.. its been filed a 100 times by now..09:22
tomatopotatoprolly they dont know what its cousing that problem yet09:22
tomatopotatomaybe its a ool situation and you must wait till they figure out09:23
tomatopotatodmesg says nothing before and nothing after?09:24
tomatopotatolike while its worknig, and when it stops working , and when it starts working again, are there any new lines in dmesg?09:24
tomatopotatoand is it always in same cycles? like every 5 minutes, or only in specific task, application09:25
Mike-Linux-NLthe thing is, as soon the mouse freezes up, if i use the trackpad it works, and then on the external mouse too... it looks like it hibernates the external mouse for a few secs... haha09:25
Mike-Linux-NLand it happens randomly09:25
Mike-Linux-NLwithin 15 to 40 secs09:25
Mike-Linux-NLso in very short time periods....09:26
well_laid_lawnI wonder if it is a udev setting09:26

ms_I just installed program "rar" and it seems that: "rar x file.rar " isn't working. and shows:"/usr/local/bin/rar: 1: /usr/local/bin/rar: Syntax error: "&" unexpected"11:29
ali1234what needs to be fixed with the messaging indicator?12:14
ali1234btw, i finally found a few real differences between xubuntu session and xfce session: in xfce, sound and ssh-agent don't work properly12:16
baizonali1234: backport for gtk212:21
baizonit works with gtk3 only12:21
ali1234how do apps that don't use gtk at all work with indicators?12:23
ali1234ie skype12:23
baizonali1234: the skype indicator is written in pygtk :)12:24
baizonthats why its working ;)12:24
ali1234and pygtk is gtk2?12:24
baizonyes12:25
ali1234and all this also applies to the other missing indicators? bluetooth, printers, session, datetime?12:25
baizonbut its not pygtk, sorry it is PyGObject12:25
baizonthats what its called :D12:26
baizonpygtk is for gtk2, pygobject is for gtk3 :)12:26
knomeali1234, xubuntu does have those other indicators you mention12:27
ali1234how do i make them work then?12:27
baizonali1234: it wont, the ubuntu team needs to port it for gtk212:27
baizonor the xfce team switches to gtk3 :)12:28
baizonboth sollutions will work12:28
ali1234hopefully the latter, as there's zero chance of ubuntu doing anything with gtk212:28
knomei think you might need to install xfce4-goodies12:28
knomeor xfce4-datetime-plugin12:28
ali1234ah, does that contain the missing xfapplet-plugin?12:28
ali1234xfce4-datetime-plugin is not an indicator12:29
ali1234it's a plugin12:29
knomeno, you're right12:29
ali1234xubuntu has replacements for some of the missing indicators12:29
ali1234like datetime-plugin12:29
ali1234but it isn't as good12:29
knomegoodies has xfapplet12:29
knomenot sure how useful that is though12:30
knomenow that many gnome applets won't work with it12:30
ali1234yeah, i'm assuming it also only works with gtk2 gnome-panel applets, which is virtually none now12:30
knomeyes12:30
ali1234according to apt i don't have xfce4-datetime-plugin package installed. so i wonder what this thing on my panel that shows the time is?12:32
baizonorage maybe12:33
knomeyup12:33
ali1234nope12:33
ali1234in "items" i now have "clock" and "orage panel clock" and they are different12:33
ali1234orage has (external) next to it, clock does not12:34
ali1234datetime-plugin is different again, it looks like the KDE one with two rows and a tiny font12:35
ali1234and has no configuration options12:35
ali1234http://imagebin.org/23681512:38
ali1234oops, got the order wrong, it's built-in, datetime-plugin, orage12:38
ali1234hehe, good news is indicator-cpufreq still works :)12:45
baizonmost (all) indicator works fine12:45
baizonjust indicator-messages for gtk2 is missing12:45
ali1234except for gtk3 ones... which is all of them12:45
ali1234the only official indicator which still has a gtk2 version is volume12:46
baizonali1234: and sound ;)12:46
ali1234volume is the same as sound...12:46
baizonyeah your right12:46
ali1234sound is the right name :)12:46
baizonso lets hope that xfce 4.12 will have gtk3 support ;)12:47
ali1234it won't12:47
ali1234not enough to make this work anyway12:47
baizonali1234: https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.12/roadmap/gtk312:47
ali1234it will only have basic stuff, and gtk2 will still be the target for end users12:47
baizonyeah, but its a start :)12:47
ali1234yeah12:47
ali1234so something that annoys me about the indicators is if i click one, and then mouse over the next one, it doesn't open the menu12:48
ali1234https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr1gZVRTo6o12:50
ali1234this needs to be handled carefully so it isn't too sensitive12:50
baizonyeah i hate this bug too12:51
ali1234same goes for applications -> places menu12:52
ali1234i guess i should start with something easy, like this: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=898013:01
ubottubugzilla.xfce.org bug 8980 in Action Buttons "Action Buttons, Session menu displays the user Full name instead of the username." [Normal,New]13:01
ali1234goodies doesn't have xfapplet, it's not built any more13:11

c2tarunHi bazhang :  I downloaded a pdf and it has some high quality pics in it. Okular is taking like forever to open the pages and even if I leave it opened for a while it is not loading all the pages, any suggestions?15:32
bazhangon kubuntu?15:32
c2tarunnope, I am on Xubuntu, I thought Xubuntu's pdf loader is taking long so I installed okular as well15:33
menginec2tarun, maybe it's time to buy a new pc :p15:33
bazhangevince aka document viewer has always done well for me, you could also install acroread from the partner repo15:33
bazhangmengine, thats not helpful15:33
menginebazhang, but possible too.15:34
c2tarunmengine, i3 with 4 Gigs RAM and 1 GB ATI is not enough for reading a pdf? ;)15:34

ubottumengine: As our !guidelines say, "When helping, be helpful". If you're not familiar with the issue at hand, let someone else handle it instead of making !offtopic comments or jokes.15:34
bazhangc2tarun, acroread is acrobat reader15:34
menginec2tarun, hm as bazhang said, try evince. doing fine here too15:34
bazhang!info acroread partner15:35

c2tarunbazhang, ok, I'll try evince first then I'll try acroread15:35
menginebazhang, ever tried to open a pdf with HQ content on a single core 1gb ram? so...15:35
bazhangc2tarun, be sure to enable partner repo if you wish to install from it15:35
c2tarunbazhang, is evince better then Document Viewer, I can see that both have same authors15:37
bazhangc2tarun, they are one and the same15:37
c2tarunbazhang, ok, then I tried document viewer and its not doing any good :( trying acroread now15:38
menginebazhang, i guess is there is a bug, or just a bad code change, which has snuck into a core pdf library somewhere. if this is the case, im pretty sure it will be fixed in the near future. if nothing helps in your case, try to  get a pdf viewer running in wine. this will do it fine then.15:40
mengine*-is +that15:41
bazhangmengine, perhaps you mean c2tarun15:41
c2tarunmengine, I dont have wine installed but I have virtual box with XP in it, I'll try on that.15:41
bazhangI've got no problems viewing pdfs15:41
menginebazhang, perhaps... sorry im at work.15:41
menginec2tarun, just be sure to check on updates for the lib if your problem is not solved through various applications.15:42
c2tarunmengine, sure15:42
c2tarunmengine, Acrobat Reader on WinXP in virtual box is working little slow but lot faster than okular/evince.15:55
menginec2tarun, then it could be possible what i wrote before.15:58
sambagirlhi i am trying to change to another version of ubuntu that uses gnome so that i can have the same environment and functionality that i have enjoyed in 10.10 ubuntu and 10.04. is this the right version? kubunut uses kde. ubuntu uses unity. i want to use gnome.17:18
bazhangthen #ubuntu17:19
bazhangxubuntu is xfce417:19
bazhangie Not Gnome17:19
drc(tm)17:19
ali1234you want #ubuntu-gnome actually17:20
sambagirloh gosh ok like elive17:20
bazhangsambagirl, I already told you that gnome-panel will give you the classic look17:20
sambagirlahh ok17:20
bazhangali1234, thats not right17:20
ali1234yes it is17:20
sambagirli know you did bazhang17:20
ali1234gnome-panel is no longer supported17:20
sambagirli am just shopping around this day.17:20
bazhangali1234, please stop spreading mis info17:21
pablo24hHi17:21
bazhanggnome-panel IS supported.17:21
ali1234gnome panel will cease to work entirely in gnome 3.817:21
ali1234which will be the next major release17:21
bazhangali1234, no longer supported means now17:21
sambagirlwhy would the eliminate that necesisariy feature?17:21
ali1234yep, nobody is actually supporting it with bug fixes NOW, because they know it's pointless17:22
bazhangali1234, thats enough17:22
ali1234why do you have a problem with me simply repeating things that have already been decided by the gnome project?17:22
pablo24hI came here looking for help. Someone could help me?17:22
ali1234pablo24h: what's up?17:24
pablo24hI'm trying to install xubuntu, all OK, but when I reboot, the screen appears black after the initial machine screen17:25
ali1234you mean the bios?17:26
ali1234what graphics card do you have?17:26
pablo24hnvidia 5500 gtx17:26
ali1234hmm17:27
pablo24hyes, the bios17:27
ali1234did you tick the box "install additional software" in the installer?17:27
pablo24hAll I can do is restart the physical button17:27
pablo24hyes, I did tick it17:28
pablo24hShould not have done?17:28
ali1234it's difficult to say17:29
ali1234i don't usually tick it17:29
pablo24hmay be the nvidia propietary driver?17:30
ali1234yes, if you tick the box that gets installed17:30
ali1234so i'm told anyway17:30
ali1234can you activate recovery mode?17:30
ali1234then check that linux-headers-generic is installed17:31
ali1234also, how long did you wait on the black screen before rebooting?17:31
pablo24hno, I can't activate17:32
pablo24hfive minutes17:32
ali1234so you boot up while holding left shift17:33
ali1234what happens?17:33
pablo24hsorry, that I have not tried17:34
pablo24hmmm I will try it and then come back to tell you, thank you ali123417:36
xubuntu615Hello,17:44
xubuntu615I have a quick question, if anyone could help,17:45
ali1234what is the question?17:46
frojndHi there! :)17:48
frojndI have Acer aspire one 722 and apperantly driveres aren't isntalled. How do I install open source radeon drivers from command line?17:49
sambagirlhi if you select the filesystem to copy to an external drive, does that filesystem include the external drive that is attached as being part of the filesystem you are copying and therefore increasing the size of the actual copy?17:49
ali1234sambagirl: in what software?17:51
pablo24hali123417:52
bazhangsambagirl, are you trying to copy and paste / with nautilus?17:53
pablo24hI have been able to enter xubuntu!!17:53
pablo24hThank you a lot!17:54
frojnd7wc17:55
sambagirlyes17:55
sambagirlsorry17:55
bazhangsambagirl, thats not how to clone a drive17:55
sambagirli think when you select filesystem it includes all filesystems17:55
sambagirli would use clonezilla17:55
sambagirlbut i am just making a sinple copy that's all17:55
bazhangcopying and pasting with nautilus will not work17:55
sambagirli know you have to move17:56
sambagirlor tar the drive17:56
sambagirli'll just skip it17:56
bazhangwhy not just image the disk17:56
sambagirli have my home directory17:56
sambagirlbecause i am upgrading to a new version and what good would an image do?17:56
sambagirlbut i could extract the image then17:57
sambagirlyeah i get it thanks bazhang17:57
sambagirlthanks17:57
bazhangsambagirl, then why are you trying to copy and paste root17:57
sambagirlit's my hard drive in my laptop, i want to make sure i have everything.17:57
sambagirljust want to make sure17:58
ali1234are you really upgrading?17:58
ali1234or just switching to a different install cd?17:58
ali1234because you know... there's really no difference what image you install from17:58
cjohnstonknome: ping17:59
sambagirli meant fresh install17:59
sambagirlthis particular laptop was pure linux and i might modify it with partitions this time instead of a straight linux laptop. not sure yet.17:59
sambagirli have my home directory that's sufficient18:00
sambagirlthat should be sufficient?18:00
knomecjohnston, pong18:00
cjohnstonknome: are the xubuntu blueprints all sorted out and good for status.ubuntu.com?18:01
knomecjohnston, yep, thanks! :)18:01
cjohnstonnp.18:01
cjohnstonty18:01
Catbuntubrb19:06
Catbuntuhi19:15
ali1234baizon: i've been researching the indicator stuff a little more19:30
ali1234the difference between skype etc and the volume indicator is that skype uses indicator-application, which has gtk2 and gtk3 versions19:31
baizonyes19:31
ali1234where as volume is it's own indicator19:31
baizonindicator-messages doesnt support gtk219:31
ali1234so the question i have now is why indicator-messages doesn't just go through indicator-application19:32
ali1234i suspect the reason is indicator-application was an afterthought rather than a planned API19:33
CatbuntuUhm...19:39
CatbuntuIsn't it possible to have Ubuntu One emblems at Thunar?19:39
Catbuntu:(19:39
baizonCatbuntu: http://askubuntu.com/questions/15710/ubuntu-one-for-xfce-or-xubuntu19:40
baizonali1234: that you have to ask the ubuntu team :)19:40
CatbuntuI installed Ubuntu One, it's working19:41
CatbuntuBut there isn't a "sync with ubuntu one" option on Thunar's context menu nor those emblems for synched directories19:41
ali1234i'm pretty sure in the beginning the plan was that all apps would have to put anything they wanted to display into one of the officially sanctioned indicators, and indicator-application only really came about because proprietary apps like skype flatly refused to have a UI different from other OS19:42
rhin0hi - for the purposes of virtualbox on xubuntu 10.04 - what OS do I choose - I don't see xubuntu I see ubuntu 64 bit, linux 2.6 64 bit20:28
rhin0debian20:29
ali1234ubuntu20:29
rhin0for the purpose of setting up a virtualbox on xubiuntu 64 for xubuntu 64 (10.04)20:29
rhin0ok - "ubuntu" 64?20:29
ali1234yes20:29
rhin0ta.20:29
ali1234although20:29
TheSheeprhin0: xubuntu is mostly ubuntu under the hood, it shares most of the internals20:30
rhin0i know20:30
TheSheeprhin0: anything for ubuntu will work on xubuntu20:30
ali1234what kernel version was 10.04?20:30
rhin0just wanted to be sure20:30
rhin02.6.3220:30
ali1234it might be more appropriate to pick "linux 2.6" then20:30
TheSheepouch, that old :)20:30
ali1234what also, version of virtualbox?20:31
rhin0well hey - I have one bug that stops me from using 12.04 - one singular bug - nobody seems ot address20:31
rhin0have logged it20:31
ali1234if host and guest are both 10.04 then pick ubuntu20:31
ali1234if host is 12.04 or something linux 2.6 may be better. tbh i'm not sure what difference it even makes.20:31
=== RaringOne is now known as IdleOne
manyhighHi, is this the support channel for xubuntu?20:37
rhin0yes20:37
TheSheep!hi | manyhigh20:38
ubottumanyhigh: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!20:38
manyhighCan you fix the Windows partition that fail to boot after shrunken it in the xubuntu installer?20:42
ali1234maybe, maybe not20:43
ali1234at what point does it fail booting? what error messages do you see?20:44
TheSheepit tells you to make a backup before you do it anyways20:44
ali1234also what windows version and what type of hardware do you have?20:45
TheSheepI scared him off :(20:45
ali1234more likely he only has one computer and needs to check the error20:45
TheSheeplet's hope so20:45
ali1234i hope he doesn't have windows 7/8 with ssd accelerator20:46
ali1234because linux will corrupt those beyond hope if you so much as mount it20:46
TheSheepyay20:47
manyhighIt says a disk reading error accoured press ctrl+alt+dlt to restart, I can still acces the partition fine when in ubuntu20:48
ali1234ok. what windows version is it?20:49
manyhighWindows 720:49
ali1234ok. and what type of computer?20:49
manyhighHP Pavillion M6 laptop with AMD A10 and 7670m20:49
ali1234does it have an ssd accelerator by any chance?20:50
manyhighNo a regulare HDD20:51
ali1234ssd accelerator is a combination of regular hdd and ssd cache20:51
ali1234reviews online appear to indicate some models of that laptop have it20:51
manyhighNot on this one, seems to be almost exclusive to intel ultrabook models20:52
ali1234ok. well, the first thing you need to do is back up everything in case you somehow make the problem worse20:53
manyhighOk20:54
manyhighWhat would you advise me to do when I've done this?20:57
ali1234verify that the backups actually work and are not corrupted :)20:57
veronikaHi there20:58
TheSheephi | veronika20:58
TheSheep!hi | veronika20:58
ubottuveronika: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!20:58
veronikaI've just install  xubuntu 12.10 and I'd like to completely replace Thunar with PCmanFM file manager. I've already installed pcmanfm, what's next step?20:58
veronikaIs there a guide for this?20:59
TheSheepveronika: now just use it instead of thunar?20:59
veronikaSo I just delete Thunar icon on desktop and put pcmanfm inthere?20:59
ali1234veronika: open settings manager->prefered applications ->utilities and change thunar to pcmanfm20:59
ali1234and yeah that's pretty much it21:00
veronikaali1234: tnx :) That's what I needed :)21:00
TheSheepsome plugins may still have thunar hardcoded, but you can report that as a bug in them21:00
manyhighUn related to previous question. When pressing the powerbutton after suspending Xubuntu the powerled turns on but the screen stay black21:01
veronikaNow I have to replace firefox with chromium21:02
veronikaI'll try with prefered applications21:02
ali1234yep, same thing21:02
veronikaali1234: that's fantastic! Was that feature in 12.4?21:03
manyhighIs there a secret button combination, how do i fix it or is the feature broken?21:03
ali1234veronika: sure21:03
ali1234manyhigh: suspend is a crapshoot :(21:04
ali1234report a bug i guess21:04
manyhighOk, thanks, but I don't have time to back up tonight, can you point me on the right trail  for when I've sorted that?21:05
ali1234do you have windows install cd?21:06
ali1234or do you have one of those terrible recovery partition things?21:06
manyhighNo, HP did send one with the laptop for some reason21:06
manyhighrecoverpartion I'm afraid..21:06
ali1234you're going to have problems then21:07
manyhighBut the key should work if I can get my hands on a windows 7 cd21:07
ali1234you might need an OEM disk21:07
ali1234tried windows safe mode or whatever they call it these days?21:08
manyhighExcept xubuntu I can only choose windows and windows recovery mode, both end up in the same error message21:09
ali1234i've seen this happen before21:09
ali1234for some reason windows doesn't run a disk check sometimes21:10
ali1234it can be just trivial problem like the partition was not clean unmounted21:10
ali1234or it could be massive filesystem corruption21:10
ali1234the problem is how to boot windows to tell it to do a disk check, when it won't boot21:11
manyhighI can acces all my files, so i doubt that21:11
ali1234if you use a windows install cd and boot rescue mode it should be possible to repair it. but if you repair with the wrong type of CD you can mess up the install21:11
TheSheepyou can access the file list21:11
TheSheepdoesn't mean the contents is not corrupted21:12
ali1234yeah, did you verify the files aren't corrupted?21:12
ali1234*all* of them?21:12
manyhighOk, not all of them21:12
ali1234i had a hard drive once where all the files were ok, and all the directory listing were ok, they just didn't match21:12
TheSheepit's usually good to dd (dump) the whole disk to some external storage before you try doing anything with it21:13
ali1234so you open some.mp3 and get a text document21:13
ali1234etc21:13
TheSheepto make sure you can go back where you were21:13
ali1234that was a real pain to sort out21:13
ali1234yeah, make a full dd image if there's stuff you can't replace21:13
ali1234(that was a reiserfs btw)21:14
ali1234so much for "most reliable filesystem"21:14
veronikaWhen I shuts down or reboot xubuntu I get annoying message about speech-dispatcher something and I think it fails21:14
ali1234veronika: don't worry about it. just means it didn't exit clean21:15
veronikaali1234: every time?21:15
veronika:(21:15
ali1234yeah21:15
manyhighOk I'll do that and try the recovery plan and check with HP what kind of disc I need21:15
ali1234remember how windows used to hang on "shutting down your computer..." forever?21:15
ali1234cos some program refuses to exit21:15
veronikaali1234: ..yes21:15
ali1234it's like that. but linux does not stand for bad behaved software and just kills it and prints that warning.21:16
veronikaok great :) Makes sense21:16
ali1234manyhigh: whe you mount that partition in ubuntu do you see any warnings on dmesg or syslog?21:19
manyhighThe windows partition? No just disk read error and and opt to press ctrl alt dlt21:20
ali1234no, when you access the files in ubuntu21:20
ali1234hmm, it could also be because drive letter changed in windows21:20
ali1234you might want to try ntfsfix on it, but not until you have backed up and preferably imaged the drive21:21
manyhighNo error/warning windows open or is it a file I need to check for it?21:21
ali1234open terminal and do "dmesg"21:21
ali1234you will see loads of stuff21:22
ali1234try dmesg | grep ntfs21:22
ali1234or actually21:22
ali1234just install pastebinit21:22
ali1234then do dmesg | pastebinit21:22
ali1234also sudo fdisk -l | pastebinit21:23
ali1234and each time it will give you a URL21:23
ali1234paste the URL here21:23
manyhighIf it's command-line pastebinit client, it's already installed21:24
ali1234yeah21:25
manyhighhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1378086/ for the first command and http://paste.ubuntu.com/1378089/21:26
ali1234hmm21:27

ali1234any idea what SFS and Utökad means? is Utökad "extended"?21:30

ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience21:30
manyhighyes utökad is extended, SFS I'm not sure21:31
knomexubuntu820, please ask the question.21:31
ali1234ok, SFS is dynamic disk21:31
xubuntu820!join21:32

xubuntu820#join21:32
knomexubuntu820, what are you doing?21:32
CilyanHi everyone !21:32
ali1234manyhigh: this guy seems to have had same problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=165349321:33
CilyanI just installed Xubuntu 12.10 on a friend's PC and I'm getting black screen instead of Plymouth at bootup. Login screen displays fine (lightdm I guess), further graphics also. It's an ATI card with opensource drivers.21:34
CilyanI already tried to remove vt.handoff from the grub cmd line, but I'm only getting plymouth at the very end of the boot, there is a long black screen phase before this point. At shutdown, everything is fine21:35
CilyanCould you please point me to some possibly related threads, google was not really a good friend today...21:35
veronikaOk.. when I close laptop's lid Screen locks, I put in password, but then I see another Xscreen saver lock screen... so I have to type twice time password just to unloc, how to resolove this? (clean installation of 12.10)21:35
v1adimiryea, same here on nvidia; shutdown is text on screen, but whatever :)21:35
v1adimirtoo*21:36
ali1234manyhigh: it's not looking good unfortunately, but i have no experience of dynamic disks21:37
manyhighSeems it could be HP only allowing 4 partitions and turned my the windows partition into a basic one instead of dynamic, am I getting it right?21:41
v1adimir4 is the max number of /primary/21:42
v1adimirerr i think21:43
ali1234manyhigh: not sure at all21:43
v1adimir(but nothing to do with HP)21:43
ali1234you only have 4 primary21:44
ali1234i suspect mixing SFS and extended has confused windows a lot21:44
manyhighWorst case I could "upgrade" my w7 to w8 for $12 and install it from a disc I have, but I would rather not resort to that21:46
veronikaI have another issue, playing youtube videos makes cpu load very very load.. Is there any sweet GUI governor that you recommend for notebooks? And I have successfully installed ati propriatery drivers for 3d accelaration21:48
veronikaAlso in full screen playing youtube is like tearing video apart and audio way out of sync..21:49
ali1234flash is notorious for doing that. html5 isn't much better21:49
TheSheepveronika: flash sucks in full screen on linux, that is unlikely to change unless someone buys off Adobe and makes them care21:49
veronikabut still do you suggest me any GUI governors? So I set to maximum performance when on AC power?21:50
ali1234it sucks slightly less if you use chrome (not chromium) and have an nvidia card21:50
veronikaAlso my previous issue? How to disable second lock screen?21:50
veronikaali1234: ah.. I have ati and chromium :P21:50
TheSheepveronika: could it be that you have both xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver running?21:51
v1adimiryea chromium has /different/ flash21:51
veronikaTheSheep: celan install.. haven't done anything by myself..21:51
TheSheepveronika: what does 'dpkg -l | grep screensaver' say?21:51
veronikav1adimir: so u suggest to install chrome? :| don't trust google so much but what do I have left for21:51
v1adimirveronika: i wouldn't put chrome, but chromium21:52
manyhighThanks for the help, last question: How do I make backspace make chromium go back a step?21:52
TheSheepv1adimir: chromium doesn't come with the harcoded flash that chrome has21:52
ali1234it's not "hardcoded" - it just uses a different api21:52
ali1234and is a newer version that google have "fixed"21:53
TheSheepali1234: it's compiled inside chrome, and uses the nacl api21:53
v1adimirveronika: this is the one i use, but again can't recommend using ppa-s on your box :) http://ppa.launchpad.net/a-v-shkop/chromium/ubuntu21:53
ali1234it uses the pepper api actually21:53
veronikaTheSheep: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1378145/21:54
TheSheepveronika: looks good21:54
v1adimirTheSheep: that's crazy if i hadn't noticed that, hm21:54
veronikaTheSheep: yet it aske me for a password for two times21:55
TheSheepv1adimir: but I remember that both the power manager and the screensaver settings have this checkbox for locking the screen, you could try uchecking *one* of them and seeing what happens21:55
TheSheepv1adimir: sorry21:55
TheSheepveronika: ^21:55
v1adimir:)21:55
veronikaTheSheep: let me try and find power manager21:56
TheSheepali1234: pepper is the thing that nacl programs use to communicate with the browser, no?21:56
ali1234pepper is a browser plugin api, like npapi21:56
TheSheepali1234: the thing that looks like web workers?21:56
manyhighAppriciate the help, atleast a little clearer on what's wrong, good night21:56
ali1234i don't know what web workers are21:56
ali1234it's just a .so same as regular flash. just uses a different plugin api21:57
TheSheepali1234: a way to have threads in js, basically21:57
Justakilldoes anyone here use sbackup? I'd like to exclude all hidden files in my home directory.21:57
TheSheepali1234: http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=10808621:57
ali1234/opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so21:58
ali1234no doubt you could get that working in chromium, with enough hacking21:58
TheSheepali1234: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-enable-flash-support-for-google-chromium-browser.html21:59
TheSheepali1234: in chromium -- yes21:59
ali1234firefox doesn't support ppapi because mozilla said "it's too hard and anyway html5" - even though they helped design it21:59
ali1234but there's no reason other browsers can't support it. i mean nacl just means native code in the browser. plugins were always native anyway...22:00
veronikaTheSheep: You were right, when I go to power managment and untick lock screen when lid is closed I only have one lock22:01
v1adimirTheSheep: if my chromium uses global flash, like firefox and it doesn't crash.. i don't get it; but tnx, gonna check that out22:02
veronikaabout that flash performance.. haven't quite follow your debate :) You suggest me to install plain chrome?22:03
ali1234v1adimir: chromium doesn't come with the pepper flash because chromium is open source...22:03
ali1234both chromium and chrome can still use netscape plugins though22:04
v1adimirmakes sense, but i can't see how it's working fine with the 11.2 r202 flash that makes so many problems on ff22:05
v1adimir:s22:05
ali1234what type of problems?22:05
ali1234it works exactly the same in both here22:05
v1adimirpages that crash with it and all that22:05
v1adimirchromium can open the URLs that ff can't22:05
veronikaHm, can't find chrome in apt22:06
v1adimirlike IMDB trailers22:06
ali1234never seen a url that ff can't open... i do use adblock though, it blocks most of the crashy flash adverts22:06
ali1234veronika: you have to download it from google. i can't really say it makes a huge difference... it's a little better but not massively22:06
veronikaok22:06
v1adimirveronika: chromium is no longer maintained, even in the 'official' repos, gotta make it yourself or use a ppa22:06
veronikalet me try it22:06
veronikav1adimir: why?22:07
veronika:|22:07
veronikais that for all chromiums? or just ubuntu22:07
v1adimirthey stopped a while back :f22:07
v1adimirubuntu22:07
veronikathat's too bad :|22:07
v1adimiri think this is the one i'm on, no idea if it's trustworthy https://launchpad.net/~a-v-shkop/+archive/chromium-dev22:08
veronikaI wanna pimp xubuntu icon themes and everything, can you suggest me any good pages with tutorials to do that?22:16
knome!themes | veronika22:16
ubottuveronika: To change your theme in Xubuntu, go to Settings Manager » Appearance (GTK+ theme) or Settings Manager » Window Manager (xfwm4 theme) to change the theme - find more themes at http://xfce-look.org/ or http://gnome-look.org/ (for GTK+ themes)22:16
veronikayes :) xfce-look.org22:17
TheSheepit's a shame that tango-generator doesn't work anymore22:21
Justakilli'm looking for an interesting program for encrypting data in the vein of truecrypt? Any suggestions22:27
Justakill?22:27
Cilyanok, for me it seems plymouth is working once the initramfs has given back the control22:27
Cilyanthe question is, how to make it work in the initramfs...22:28
David-AJustakill: you really want an "interesting" program or one that just works and is very reliable?22:31
Cilyanok, works22:31
JustakillDavid-A: well a reliable and working program was more what I ment. But if you know of something "interesting" why not...22:32
xubuntu876I have drivers for my RealTek USB wireless adapter but please could somebody explain how to install them.  I am a novice, keen to learn but really frustrated!!!!22:33
veronikaDoes package manager when I click remove on a application removes also settings with those app? Like if I'd write apt-get --purge remove chromium in a shell?22:34
xubuntu876Sorry,  I should have explained that they are on a CD Rom provided by the manufacturer22:35
v1adimirpurge should remove settings and all yeah22:35
CilyanFor those interrested in getting boot splash, I first removed the vt.handoff parameter from the grub cmdline (/etc/grub.d/10_linux), then I added FRAMEBUFFER=y to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash. You need to update both grub and initramfs22:35
veronikav1adimir: can I tweak package manager that it would use that --purge options?22:36
v1adimirveronika: idk :)22:36
CilyanThe time to setup the screen correctly is quite long, but I suppose this is the time needed to get the graphics correctly set up...22:37
v1adimirCilyan: 'tis long, sandy bridge here, 4gb ram, sata 6gb22:38
lwizardlhello22:38
lwizardlI want to create a custom Xubuntu LiveCD with preconfigured applications etc, is there a tool for doing this ?22:39
Cilyanv1adimir, here notebook... But on my own computer, I also have Sandy bridge, and I would say I don't care. The time to bootup the motherboard is almost longer as booting my whole linux ;)22:39
v1adimirhehe :s22:40
David-AJustakill: I don't encrypt myself, but there seems to be many options. Maybe ask more specific question? You want to crypt a partition or have a crypted filesystem inside a file? Must its existence be hidden?22:41
JustakillDavid-A: a crypted filesyste, its existence does not need to be hidden.22:45
veronikaHm :) I'm trying to use list for wallpapers but don't know how22:51
veronikaImage list :)22:52
veronikaWhen I click on it I get empty background :P22:52
David-Averonika: can y22:58
David-Averonika: can you click Plus and add image files to the image list?22:58
veronikaDavid-A: no I can't23:02
veronikaDavid-A: aha..23:03
veronikaDavid-A: I think I got it..23:03
veronikaWhere do I change font?23:07
veronikaAnd size of it?23:07
David-Averonika: Settings>Appearance>Fonts (for menus, panels, etc) (rendering setting affects most programs)23:09
