Name141 | Hello, I'm using a live Xubuntu after I got 'disk read error' while trying to boot to the hard drive.. It shows up in BIOS and SATA (well most of the time, sometimes it doesn't even show there). And it's not showing in the live OS with fdisk -l , and when I go to the installer it doesn't show up.. I guess the drive is toasted? is there any other tests I might try using the living OS ? | 08:07 |
Name141 | er live os | 08:07 |
Name141 | ..I guess this might not actually be a xubuntu question | 08:09 |

rokin | hi everyone is there a good tool to setup a Multi-Monitor , i'm using now ARandR but i'm not happy with the results | 18:40 |
xubuntu921 | hello all | 18:43 |
xubuntu921 | first install of xubuntu | 18:43 |
tomatopotato | congrats | 18:44 |
xubuntu921 | does the video mode normally go all odd? or is that an issue with me? | 18:44 |
tomatopotato | define odd | 18:44 |
xubuntu921 | basically the refresh has completely gone. | 18:44 |
xubuntu921 | so moving the installer window around has now made it all go grey. | 18:45 |
tomatopotato | so.. you are still installing? | 18:45 |
xubuntu921 | its downloading updates during the install | 18:45 |
xubuntu921 | yup | 18:45 |
tomatopotato | well | 18:45 |
tomatopotato | might get better after install | 18:45 |
tomatopotato | what gfx? | 18:45 |
xubuntu921 | I guess the installer is quite demanding. | 18:45 |
xubuntu921 | nvidia 6600 gt | 18:45 |
tomatopotato | shouldnt be a problem | 18:46 |
xubuntu921 | amd 3800 64 processor | 18:46 |
tomatopotato | what acpu and ram? | 18:46 |
xubuntu921 | 4gb ram | 18:46 |
tomatopotato | should be more then sufficient | 18:46 |
xubuntu921 | if it continues then there might be something odd with the hardware. | 18:46 |
tomatopotato | wait untill its finished and you restart | 18:46 |
tomatopotato | doesnt have to be | 18:46 |
tomatopotato | can be a driver issue | 18:47 |
xubuntu921 | true. | 18:47 |
tomatopotato | for the gfx card | 18:47 |
tomatopotato | but could be fixed also after the installation is finished | 18:47 |
tomatopotato | of course after reboot to :) | 18:47 |
xubuntu921 | the motherboard has a USB issue in windows. | 18:47 |
xubuntu921 | I'm hoping its not in xubuntu too | 18:48 |
tomatopotato | what kinda issue | 18:48 |
xubuntu921 | i.e. I can't plug my big HDD in as it causes a reboot | 18:48 |
xubuntu921 | not ideal | 18:48 |
xubuntu921 | its like it gets overwhelmed :( | 18:48 |
tomatopotato | but saves the mouse movement lol | 18:48 |
xubuntu921 | silly bitch motherboard. | 18:48 |
xubuntu921 | yeh I can have tons of other USB things working. | 18:49 |
xubuntu921 | but as soon as it needs a bit more juice, pop | 18:49 |
tomatopotato | juice huh | 18:49 |
tomatopotato | maybe a self powered usb hub could have fixed your probs with windows | 18:49 |
xubuntu921 | have exactly that. | 18:49 |
tomatopotato | ok... | 18:50 |
xubuntu921 | I have a hard drive caddy, then from that a USB to the big HDD | 18:50 |
tomatopotato | then maybe it is couseing the problems | 18:50 |
tomatopotato | that could be to | 18:50 |
tomatopotato | anyway | 18:50 |
xubuntu921 | I could try one at a time to see which is worse. | 18:50 |
tomatopotato | let it install | 18:50 |
tomatopotato | and then reboot | 18:50 |
tomatopotato | and see what happens | 18:50 |
xubuntu921 | lets see if xu likes it :) | 18:50 |
xubuntu921 | I'm much happier in linux tbh | 18:50 |
tomatopotato | who isnt | 18:51 |
xubuntu921 | bill gates | 18:51 |
tomatopotato | just gaming is an issue | 18:51 |
xubuntu921 | steam linux soon here ;) | 18:51 |
tomatopotato | since most games are mostly windows exclusive | 18:51 |
tomatopotato | yeah well | 18:51 |
xubuntu921 | and tons of games are going to end up being browser based. | 18:51 |
Azelphur | steam linux is already here, unofficially | 18:51 |
xubuntu921 | yeh | 18:51 |
tomatopotato | we will see about that | 18:51 |
Azelphur | you can use the beta | 18:51 |
xubuntu921 | can anyone sign up Azelphur ? | 18:52 |
xubuntu921 | or is it closed? | 18:52 |
Azelphur | xubuntu921: it's closed beta with a bug so you can use it without an invite | 18:52 |
tomatopotato | i think it was close | 18:52 |
xubuntu921 | thought as much | 18:52 |
xubuntu921 | I was late to that partyy. | 18:52 |
Azelphur | so, anyone can use it | 18:52 |
xubuntu921 | OH I re-read that | 18:52 |
Azelphur | http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb | 18:52 |
tomatopotato | whats the bug? | 18:52 |
Azelphur | start it up as normal, it will tell you it's unauthorised, click ok so that steam closes | 18:53 |
Azelphur | now in terminal run "steam steam://friends/" | 18:53 |
Azelphur | it'll open up again bypassing the message, enjoy. | 18:53 |
xubuntu921 | sweet! | 18:53 |
tomatopotato | aha | 18:53 |
xubuntu921 | I'm getting that going asap :) | 18:53 |
xubuntu921 | gah error | 18:53 |
tomatopotato | hold the horses meanwhile lol | 18:53 |
tomatopotato | what error? | 18:54 |
xubuntu921 | dependency is not satisfiable: multiarch-support | 18:54 |
xubuntu921 | although yeah I should probably actually install an OS first :P | 18:54 |
tomatopotato | interesting | 18:54 |
tomatopotato | was that a installer error? | 18:54 |
tomatopotato | form the os installation? | 18:55 |
xubuntu921 | I got an error with steam :) not OS. | 18:55 |
tomatopotato | ah | 18:55 |
xubuntu921 | :) | 18:55 |
tomatopotato | thats why | 18:55 |
xubuntu921 | yeh :) | 18:55 |
tomatopotato | like i said | 18:55 |
xubuntu921 | holding | 18:55 |

fedcab | Hello, my laptop running xubuntu (which worked well when I installed it) now refuses to use the displays native resolution of 1280x800 pixel. randr also doesn't show the correct resolution. Xorg.0.log showed the resolution. Where can I get a little support on how to fix it? | 19:21 |
baizon | fedcab: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution | 19:23 |
GridCube | fedcab, you installed your drivers? | 19:23 |
GridCube | if you want to go back to your default state, just go to /ext/X11 and delete the xorg.conf file, things should be fixed after a reboot | 19:24 |
fedcab | @GridCube: honestly, I don't know. On my other machines I use ubuntu, where I usually find everything. Xubuntu is a little unfamiliar to me. | 19:25 |
GridCube | fedcab, are you using 12.10? | 19:26 |
fedcab | @gridcube: yes, and it doesn't work since I changed. | 19:27 |
fedcab | @baizon: the first thing mentioned in your reference shows the use of xrandr which does not show the correct resolution. | 19:28 |
GridCube | fedcab, go to the ubuntu software center and in the tab "additional drivers" check wich drivers are you using | 19:28 |
baizon | fedcab: then your drivers are broken | 19:28 |
baizon | you can try to reset the configuration, but like GridCube said check drivers first | 19:29 |
mengine | good evening. so who is up and running with xubuntu 12.10 and actually has a nvidia gfx-card? | 19:32 |
mengine | can anyone explain me how to get the current graphic card driver that is used? something like lshw -C display ? | 19:36 |
fedcab | @GridCube: I don't even find tabs in the software center. I'm feeling pretty stupid now. | 19:39 |
baizon | mengine: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man1/alt-nvidia-current-settings.1.html | 19:39 |
baizon | fedcab: you need to open software-properties-gtk | 19:40 |
mengine | baizon, installed it already with nvidia-current. tells me that x is not running with nvidia. then i ran nvidia-xconfig that was not able to find a xorg.conf. what?! | 19:41 |
baizon | mengine: so check what package is installed, it will tell you the version | 19:42 |
fedcab | @ Gridcube Btw: I'm using it in german. There are only drop downs named "all applications", "installed" ... | 19:42 |
baizon | fedcab: open terminal and type "software-properties-gtk" | 19:43 |
knome | mengine, xorg.conf is not used by default | 19:43 |
baizon | then wait a few sec | 19:43 |
mengine | knome, so how to get to the right drivers then? | 19:44 |
mengine | knome, when i run lshw -C display i see output of driver=nvidia | 19:45 |
mengine | baizon, should that nvidia-settings manager work actually? | 19:46 |
mengine | damn how i hate that nvidia shit... | 19:46 |
knome | mengine, can you check your attitude/language? thanks. | 19:47 |
GridCube | mengine, do this: alt-f2 > gksu thunar >> go to /etc/X11/ and delete/rename xorg.conf, then reboot | 19:48 |
fedcab | @baizon: there is only one additional driver there - for the wireless LAN. | 19:49 |
mengine | knome, thanks for the advice... very helpful! | 19:49 |
baizon | fedcab: what graphics card are you using? | 19:50 |
mengine | GridCube, sure. will try. thank you! | 19:50 |
GridCube | oh, i meant fedcab :/ | 19:51 |
GridCube | mengine, but that should give you generic drivers aswell | 19:51 |
mengine | GridCube, should not speed up my opengl applications as well. | 19:51 |
GridCube | it will send you back to generic drivers | 19:52 |
fedcab | @baizon: how can I find out which driver is currently in use? | 19:53 |
GridCube | fedcab, if you are using 12.10 it should be on the additional drivers tab of usc | 19:53 |
mengine | fedcab, lshw -C display | 19:54 |
knome | mengine, you're welcome. and i guarantee it's useful if you want to stay in the channel | 19:54 |
fedcab | @GridCube, it isn't | 19:55 |
mengine | knome, sure. like a boss! got any useful tips for the real problem i joined for? if it leads to a result, i left in no time... i promise! | 19:56 |
fedcab | baizon, there is something called settings editor (edit xfconf settings) which shows two displays: default and the LVDS. The display settings (in the system settings) only show one display; unfortunately the wrong one. Is it possible that the xserver tries to apply the same settings to the internal display and the (unused) external VGA connection? | 20:01 |
fedcab | baizon, how can I find out which driver is currently in use, lshw shows the graphics hardware (Radeon HD 3200) | 20:04 |
baizon | fedcab: fglrxinfo | 20:06 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Hello | 20:07 |
XxXNightstalkerX | I have a problem | 20:07 |
XxXNightstalkerX | anybody up to help? | 20:07 |
fedcab | baizon, returns a BadRequest X error | 20:08 |
baizon | fedcab: so your using the open source drivers | 20:08 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Xubuntu only starts every second time. | 20:10 |
baizon | XxXNightstalkerX: try that -> http://askubuntu.com/questions/128128/how-to-boot-without-nomodeset | 20:11 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Sure. But what exactly does this do? | 20:11 |
baizon | XxXNightstalkerX: your driver dont goes up | 20:11 |
baizon | thats why it stays on black screen | 20:11 |
baizon | this disables the drivers and the system will boot | 20:11 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Will my drivers come back on? | 20:12 |
baizon | XxXNightstalkerX: http://askubuntu.com/questions/207175/what-does-nomodeset-do | 20:12 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Ah | 20:13 |
XxXNightstalkerX | thanks. | 20:13 |
baizon | np | 20:14 |
XxXNightstalkerX | alright it starts now, but everything looks weird | 20:21 |
baizon | XxXNightstalkerX: well your resolution is broken then :) | 20:22 |
XxXNightstalkerX | The highest resolution it is giving me now is 1280 x 720 | 20:23 |
XxXNightstalkerX | My monitor is 1920 x 1080 | 20:23 |
baizon | XxXNightstalkerX: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12278210&postcount=5 | 20:24 |
baizon | if this doesnt work, disable the whole gfxmode and use terminal | 20:25 |
fedcab | baizon, obviously, I did something to prevent the system from using non-free software. Now, I can't activate the installed AMD/ATI drivers. So I will probably have to reinstall.... | 20:30 |
baizon | fedcab: yes try it | 20:30 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Yea, It doesnt work | 20:48 |
baizon | then change it to console mode | 20:48 |
XxXNightstalkerX | I'm going to take nomodeset off | 20:48 |
XxXNightstalkerX | It isnt going back now | 20:54 |
baizon | XxXNightstalkerX: sudo update-grub? | 20:55 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Oh yea. derp. | 20:55 |
XxXNightstalkerX | and how can I stop it from checking disc everytime I boot? | 20:55 |
baizon | welcome back XxXNightstalkerX :) | 21:06 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Thanks :P | 21:07 |
XxXNightstalkerX | Still trying to figure it out | 21:08 |

samer | is xubuntu my best bet? | 21:27 |
samer | or should I choose a different distro? | 21:27 |
knome | !best | 21:27 |
ubottu | Usually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, features you require, and other factors. Polls are highly discouraged to be taken on this channel. If you insist on getting people's opinions, please ask BestBot in #ubuntu-bots. | 21:27 |
samer | heh | 21:27 |
knome | well, that's to say | 21:27 |
knome | do you care more about being fast or user-friendly? and what exactly do you think that is "fast", "slow", "user-friendly" or "not user-friendly" | 21:28 |
samer | I see how thats a difficult question to answer... I'm giving this laptop to my friend who is not very "techy" so user-friendliness is important.. | 21:30 |
knome | then you might want to try xubuntu for example and see if it feels smooth enough | 21:30 |
knome | if you need something faster, you might want to test somethings like lubuntu | 21:31 |
samer | interesting | 21:32 |

well_laid_lawn | you'll have an error something like "can't find root device" | 21:51 |

knome | bluesky, to be sure that's asked, use the "manual"/"other" option | 22:10 |
