phunyguyHey folks, I am on the xubuntu livecd... I thought at one time there was an envelope for online account notifications in this distro?05:56
Name141Hello, I'm using a live Xubuntu after I got 'disk read error' while trying to boot to the hard drive.. It shows up in BIOS and SATA (well most of the time, sometimes it doesn't even show there).  And it's not showing in the live OS with fdisk -l , and when I go to the installer it doesn't show up.. I guess the drive is toasted? is there any other tests I might try using the living OS ?08:07
Name141er live os08:07
Name141..I guess this might not actually be a xubuntu question08:09
Unit193Try the boot tool of the hard drive maker, I know seagate has seatools.08:10
Name141Western digital's tools are probably windows only08:10
Name141the funny thing is it did this last week, and I fixed the boot.. and it ran till the power went out (breaker blew)08:11
Name141now it did it again, but now it wont let me fix the boot08:11
Name141or show up in installs08:11
Name141I think it probably was going out, then went out ?08:11

I've noticed that my boot time is significlyy longer that with any other system, including windows7, So I've checked a few logs and I found some interesting stuff: I've checked for fail and error with dmesg: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1379604/ As you can see there is omething terribly wrong, and this is my boot.log http://paste.ubuntu.com/1379606/14:59

fedcabHello, my laptop running xubuntu (which worked well when I installed it) now refuses to use the displays native resolution of 1280x800 pixel. randr also doesn't show the correct resolution. Xorg.0.log showed the resolution. Where can I get a little support on how to fix it?19:21
baizonfedcab: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution19:23
GridCubefedcab, you installed your drivers?19:23
GridCubeif you want to go back to your default state, just go to /ext/X11 and delete the xorg.conf file, things should be fixed after a reboot19:24
fedcab@GridCube: honestly, I don't know. On my other machines I use ubuntu, where I usually find everything. Xubuntu is a little unfamiliar to me.19:25
GridCubefedcab, are you using 12.10?19:26
fedcab@gridcube: yes, and it doesn't work since I changed.19:27
fedcab@baizon: the first thing mentioned in your reference shows the use of xrandr which does not show the correct resolution.19:28
GridCubefedcab, go to the ubuntu software center and in the tab "additional drivers" check wich drivers are you using19:28
baizonfedcab: then your drivers are broken19:28
baizonyou can try to reset the configuration, but like GridCube said check drivers first19:29
menginegood evening. so who is up and running with xubuntu 12.10 and actually has a nvidia gfx-card?19:32
menginecan anyone explain me how to get the current graphic card driver that is used? something like lshw -C display ?19:36
fedcab@GridCube: I don't even find tabs in the software center. I'm feeling pretty stupid now.19:39
baizonmengine: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man1/alt-nvidia-current-settings.1.html19:39
baizonfedcab: you need to open software-properties-gtk19:40
menginebaizon, installed it already with nvidia-current. tells me that x is not running with nvidia. then i ran nvidia-xconfig that was not able to find a xorg.conf. what?!19:41
baizonmengine: so check what package is installed, it will tell you the version19:42
fedcab@ Gridcube Btw: I'm using it in german. There are only drop downs named "all applications", "installed" ...19:42
baizonfedcab: open terminal and type "software-properties-gtk"19:43
knomemengine, xorg.conf is not used by default19:43
baizonthen wait a few sec19:43
mengineknome, so how to get to the right drivers then?19:44
mengineknome, when i run lshw -C display i see output of driver=nvidia19:45
menginebaizon, should that nvidia-settings manager work actually?19:46
menginedamn how i hate that nvidia shit...19:46
knomemengine, can you check your attitude/language? thanks.19:47
GridCubemengine, do this: alt-f2 > gksu thunar >> go to /etc/X11/ and delete/rename xorg.conf, then reboot19:48
fedcab@baizon: there is only one additional driver there - for the wireless LAN.19:49
mengineknome, thanks for the advice... very helpful!19:49
baizonfedcab: what graphics card are you using?19:50
mengineGridCube, sure. will try. thank you!19:50
GridCubeoh, i meant fedcab :/19:51
GridCubemengine, but that should give you generic drivers aswell19:51
mengineGridCube, should not speed up my opengl applications as well.19:51
GridCubeit will send you back to generic drivers19:52
fedcab@baizon: how can I find out which driver is currently in use?19:53
GridCubefedcab, if you are using 12.10 it should be on the additional drivers tab of usc19:53
menginefedcab, lshw -C display19:54
knomemengine, you're welcome. and i guarantee it's useful if you want to stay in the channel19:54
fedcab@GridCube, it isn't19:55
mengineknome, sure. like a boss! got any useful tips for the real problem i joined for? if it leads to a result, i left in no time... i promise!19:56
fedcabbaizon, there is something called settings editor (edit xfconf settings) which shows two displays: default and the LVDS. The display settings (in the system settings) only show one display; unfortunately the wrong one. Is it possible that the xserver tries to apply the same settings to the internal display and the (unused) external VGA connection?20:01
fedcabbaizon, how can I find out which driver is currently in use, lshw shows the graphics hardware (Radeon HD 3200)20:04
baizonfedcab: fglrxinfo20:06
XxXNightstalkerXHello20:07

baizonXxXNightstalkerX: try that -> http://askubuntu.com/questions/128128/how-to-boot-without-nomodeset20:11
XxXNightstalkerXSure. But what exactly does this do?20:11
baizonXxXNightstalkerX: your driver dont goes up20:11
baizonthats why it stays on black screen20:11
baizonthis disables the drivers and the system will boot20:11
XxXNightstalkerXWill my drivers come back on?20:12
baizonXxXNightstalkerX: http://askubuntu.com/questions/207175/what-does-nomodeset-do20:12

XxXNightstalkerXthanks.20:13
baizonnp20:14
XxXNightstalkerXalright it starts now, but everything looks weird20:21
baizonXxXNightstalkerX: well your resolution is broken then :)20:22
XxXNightstalkerXThe highest resolution it is giving me now is 1280 x 72020:23
XxXNightstalkerXMy monitor is 1920 x 108020:23
baizonXxXNightstalkerX: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12278210&postcount=520:24
baizonif this doesnt work, disable the whole gfxmode and use terminal20:25
fedcabbaizon, obviously, I did something to prevent the system from using non-free software. Now, I can't activate the installed AMD/ATI drivers. So I will probably have to reinstall....20:30
baizonfedcab: yes try it20:30
XxXNightstalkerXYea, It doesnt work20:48
baizonthen change it to console mode20:48
XxXNightstalkerXI'm going to take nomodeset off20:48

sameror should I choose a different distro?21:27
knome!best21:27
ubottuUsually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, features you require, and other factors. Polls are highly discouraged to be taken on this channel. If you insist on getting people's opinions, please ask BestBot in #ubuntu-bots.21:27
samerheh21:27
knomewell, that's to say21:27
knomedo you care more about being fast or user-friendly? and what exactly do you think that is "fast", "slow", "user-friendly" or "not user-friendly"21:28
samerI see how thats a difficult question to answer... I'm giving this laptop to my friend who is not very "techy" so user-friendliness is important..21:30
knomethen you might want to try xubuntu for example and see if it feels smooth enough21:30
knomeif you need something faster, you might want to test somethings like lubuntu21:31
samerinteresting21:32
samernever heard of lubuntu21:32
samerthanks knome, thats the answer I was looking for21:32

blueskyIf I install xbuntu from a LiveCD into a USB flash drive, will the installation change my hard drive bootloader? My concern is that my system will try to boot from USB flash drive and not hard drive.22:09
