=== Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za === Trixar_za is now known as Trix[a]r_za [03:50] Hi all. [03:50] Squirm, *wave* [04:18] morning y'all [04:19] superfly maybe, but i think that the market is a bit flat at the moment [04:23] magespawn, Hiya [04:24] My comp rebooted itself randomly. [04:24] It's done it once before (I may have told you), and it made a weird beep noise in the headphones when it did [04:24] This time, there was no noise [04:24] I did a syslog and got this: [04:24] http://slexy.org/view/s213ogFaQB [04:24] At the bottom, it talks about the ethernet card failing or something. [04:25] I briefly disconnected the internet a few days back to test something, and then in order to put it back on, I had to set it to 'auto detect', which I don't think it was on before. [04:33] will check it out [04:34] I've long thought that maybe my ethernet card is what's causing the freezing somehow. I've always been online, even when using my music and art programs, and stuff, so. Ugh, I don't know. Nothing else is wrong. :| Stupid hardware. [04:37] is it the onboard lan card? [04:37] Yeah. [04:37] It's a realtek [04:38] Other people have written having freezing issues and that their realtek had that same error that mine is showing [04:38] Well, one other person. He wasn't using Ubuntu, but he described essentially the same problem [04:38] * TaraLS googled. [04:41] then get yourself an add on lan card, see if that solves the problem [04:42] Can I get any card, as long as it fits the motherboard? [04:42] yes [04:42] how old is the mb? [04:42] I dunno. How do I find that out? [04:43] Oh. The motherboard booklet says E4734 Third Edition V3, April 2009 [04:44] not serious, you can google the mb model name and they will tell what slots the board has and therefore what card typw to get [04:44] if you let the pc shop know that they can get you the right card [04:44] Okay. [04:45] they are usually quite cheap [04:46] this might sound a bit strange, but how/where do you get that info you posted? [04:49] magespawn, The stuff Ishowed you on slexy just now? [04:50] yes [04:50] I got it by typing in terminal: cat /var/log/syslog [04:50] ty [04:50] Right where it shows the interwebs fail error is where my comp rebooted, pretty much. [04:50] How come? [04:51] still learning linux [04:51] Ahh, alrighty [04:52] there should also be away to get to send out just the info you, if memory serves, but not sure how [04:52] want^ [04:52] all comes up in the terminal [04:52] ? [04:52] But that's the thing. I don't know what info I want, short of just wanting it to show me what, if any, errors happened during the time of the freeze/reboot [04:53] Yeah. [04:53] you can also send that directly to a text file, again not sure how [04:55] maybe like this ' cat /var/log/syslog grep | 'filename'' but do not use that until we confirm that [04:55] morning all [04:55] without the quotes [04:56] morning Kilosm [04:58] Hiyo [05:02] did some reading look like it should be "cat /var/log/syslog | grep 'filename' " [05:03] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxLogFiles [05:05] I dunno what to put in 'filename' though [05:05] That's only good for someone who knows what he/she wants to look for [05:06] Who is Kilosm? [05:06] me on maverick [05:06] 10.10 [05:06] Ohh [05:06] Okay. [05:06] Kilosm, My comp hasn't frozen since I removed and put back the CPU (though I haven't really loaded it with any streaming video or anything), but it rebooted itself just before. [05:06] Out of nowhere. [05:07] no the file name is whatever you want to call it, you could say 'filename' as 'syslog25/11/12' for example [05:07] once only [05:07] No. It was the one time where it made the beep, and then about.... twoish hours ago or whatever, maybe not even, it rebooted itself again. [05:07] Without a sound, and without freezin [05:07] g [05:08] ai [05:08] http://slexy.org/view/s213ogFaQB <-- Line 233 [05:08] also if you do have an idea of what you are looking for you cannthe following [05:09] did you get that thingie that shows all the voltages on the mb [05:09] No. What thing? [05:09] gives little icons somewhere [05:09] Also, WIne doesn't even support lexmark or genius, so it's useless to me, but thanks for it anyway. [05:10] grep sshd /var/log/auth.log | less [05:10] im on other pc now but gave them to you in mxit i think [05:10] was more tools to see voltages [05:10] Should I put that in terminal, magespawn ? [05:10] from psu in i think [05:10] Kilosm, I did what it told me to do, and then pasted the results to you in slexy, I believe. [05:10] after that one [05:10] a better one [05:11] I dunno, Kilos. Maybe I didn't get it. I guess you'll have to send it again. [05:11] when i get back to that pc [05:11] kk [05:11] that command sshd give info about sshd log in attempts from the auth log, the less command is what gets only that info [05:11] busy try to fix kde [05:11] magespawn, dont use boot-repair near kde [05:12] not good? [05:12] its a gnome friendly tool [05:12] ahh [05:12] my kde is totally gone [05:12] mbr and all [05:13] got 80 GB unallocated space but cant partition or anything [05:13] ouch [05:14] TaraLS: line 233? [05:14] magespawn, What are you asking? [05:15] is that the line that you think says the lan card has failed? [05:15] Not the card itself. That says that the connection failed or something. [05:15] I'm just saying... Maybe the freezing has to do with the stupid card itself. [05:16] And I just saw, lines 181/182. Whassat meaaan? [05:16] maybe but that line means it could not get an ip version 6 network address [05:16] most isp's are still using ip version4 [05:16] Line 113... [05:17] Well, I dunno. I just know that my comp rebooted right around that the 46th minute mark [05:19] 181/182 are referining to dns but what exactly i am not sure [05:19] now 113 looks promising but have no idea what it means [05:20] serious refs that [05:20] * magespawn goes to google [05:20] Yeah... [05:20] lol [05:20] Google for the win. [05:20] referining [05:20] hehe [05:20] you tired kiddo? [05:20] Nope. [05:20] I mean, a tiny bit. But I'm fine. [05:23] oh btw im sure moms pc will take ubuntu with more ram in but those ddr cards are getting scarce and hard to come by no [05:23] Ah well. [05:23] Mom's PC doesn't need Ubuntu. It's Windows works fine. [05:23] Annoyingly. [05:23] lol [05:24] oh magespawn btw too [05:24] Its* [05:24] those other mbr tools are all microstinks stuff and small enough to work from floppy [05:25] and i dont have ms to use them with but still got a floppy going [05:26] ty guys late night early morning and amtouch screen, those are my excuses and i am stcking with them [05:27] you falling asleep? [05:27] sorry for bugging you [05:28] no just got up [05:28] o/ [05:29] hi nlsthzn [05:29] how are you uncle Kilosm [05:29] ? [05:29] hey nlsthzn [05:29] hows things in ahab land [05:29] im good ty [05:29] good good :) weather is very nice [05:29] alo magespawn ? How are you? [05:30] here too, weve had lotsa rain for a change [05:30] sort of awake, and you? [05:30] 33mm 60mm and 38mm in three days [05:30] christmas [05:32] Kilosm: can you remember who was talking about getting stickers made? [05:32] queery and some gauteng peeps methinks [05:34] Maaz tell queery http://www.stickermule.com/?utm_campaign=Carbon_August_12&utm_medium=Banner&utm_source=Carbon [05:34] magespawn: Righto, I'll tell Queery on freenode [05:35] not sure how the costing will wwork out on that though since it is usa based [05:36] Kilosm, Hey, Hardware Sensors Detector shows a ton of voltages [05:36] They're just not labelled what for [05:36] eish postage costs nowadays [05:36] Oh. atk0110-acpi-0 [05:36] yeah those 1.3 and 5.something are the ones to watch [05:37] Vcore Voltage, +3.3 voltage, +5 volate, +12 Voltage [05:37] hover over each icon [05:37] aw unity dropped that function [05:37] ya all of them they are from psu to pc [05:37] Oh... [05:37] If I'm understanding this correctly... [05:37] they say free delivery but maybe only in the states [05:38] The +5 means it can take more than, or that's its maximum? [05:38] oi magespawn [05:38] no [05:38] + = positive [05:38] I know what a + means. But what's it meaning in this instance? [05:38] Positive what? [05:38] positive not negative voltage [05:39] ....Well, yeah, Kilos. What's that MEAN? [05:39] like a car battery uses earth and +12 [05:39] some things use - voltages too [05:40] like =12v and -12 with earth in between [05:40] +12v [05:40] Okay. [05:40] So. [05:40] The voltages say [05:40] For instance [05:40] The one that say +5 Voltage [05:40] It's going at a rate of 5.09 [05:40] Does that matter? [05:40] nope thats good [05:40] when it drops its struggling [05:41] Okay... [05:41] like 4.5 will switch off [05:41] How do you know that the +5 one is the power one specifically? [05:41] What if it stays above 5, but the +3 one drops below 3? [05:41] Like... yeah. [05:41] or 4.8 maybe [05:41] its all those TaraLS [05:42] they are all from psu to mb [05:42] shows state of psu [05:43] What does "from psu to mb" mean? [05:43] a little variation on either side of the target voltage is okay [05:43] when they start struggling then they give less than a new one and crash quicker [05:43] "less than a new one" what? [05:43] from power supply unit to the motherboard [05:43] that big plug from the power supply to the motherboard [05:44] new power supply [05:44] magespawn, I know what it means. But like... [05:44] hehe fast on that thing hey [05:44] Oh well. [05:44] It's not worth it lol [05:44] Kilosm, Ah okay [05:44] * magespawn on a differnet page [05:44] that one link says as they age they lose power [05:45] Okay but [05:45] we actually got a shop here that sells them cheaper than there by you [05:45] R190 for 400w [05:45] Would power failures cause freezing and rebooting at intermittent times, or would it be consistent? [05:45] yip [05:46] Yip what [05:46] power is a funny thing [05:46] It's annoying [05:46] Very damn annoying [05:46] yip it will cause probs [05:46] I know it will cause probs [05:46] Okay [05:46] Shh [05:46] No more PC talk lol [05:46] pc voltages are critical [05:46] * TaraLS drops out of the conversation. [05:47] lol [05:49] magespawn, hows your guys there handling the rhino poaching [05:49] KILL THEM ALL [05:49] The poachers, I mean. [16:46] lol [16:47] ya [16:47] but there so many commands for different things i still lose them and find another day when looking for something else [16:48] ahh well i always tend to keep multiple copies as well [16:50] lol yeah and they just as easy to forget where they are [16:50] indeed [16:50] might even have a mage one here [16:50] got a kerbero with networking stuff and links [16:51] sometimes spend awhile looking, even just through email [16:51] monkey with what he helped me with [16:51] etc etc [16:51] i am honoured [16:51] hehe [16:51] most guys that helped me have one [16:53] the weed is the ibid one [16:54] and very deep somewhere is the crashkid with finding a prin i think it waster [16:54] printer [16:54] I must say unity helps me a lot to find files [16:55] i also have them spread over 4 drives with different ubuntus on [16:55] ouch [16:55] maybe use an external [16:55] and an external that i dunno has what on apart from archives and backups [16:56] Have you ever looked into recoil Kilos ? [16:56] nope what that [16:56] in firearms yes [16:56] You set it up to monitor and then can search for phrases [16:56] And it actually not only checks filename , but also file contents [16:56] the recoil on an fn rifle can almost break your shoulder if gas not set right [16:57] I had it on my previous install , but never used it much as unity mostly found what I was looking for [16:57] will ask you again to tell me about it when/if i get kde going again [16:57] im crying [16:58] it wasnt a 80g drive with kde it was a 160g [16:58] mweeee [16:58] You format wrong drive ? [16:58] with everything saved on the 50g /storage [16:59] tried boot-repair but forgot to disconnect kde [16:59] boot-repair killed mbr boot sector and everything [17:00] Eina !!! [17:00] whole drive doesnt allow me to partittion [17:00] hehe [17:00] can you not reinstall kde? [17:00] such is life when you sit on your brain [17:00] it cant partition it [17:01] shows as unallocated but cant partition [17:01] usually when you reinstall it detects the previous install and allows a side by side install [17:01] maybe its some bug that came in with the 2 TB drive that was connected same time [17:02] not one ubuntu can add a partition on it [17:02] cant set it as active or anything [17:03] disktools? [17:03] Have you tried in gparted "Device-delete partition table then Device-create partition table" ? [17:03] which one magespawn [17:03] brb [17:03] ive tried for days now with UBCD and supergrub [17:04] Called Disk Utility [17:04] will find a link [17:05] https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/precise/gnome-disk-utility/ [17:05] i have found that it works sometimes when goarted does not [17:05] gparted even [17:06] gparted cant see it at all [17:06] will look there ty [17:06] hope its not big download [17:08] i actually thing the mbr is corrupt in some way that i have been able to fix [17:08] not too sure about the size [17:09] cant be too big methinks [17:09] should be in the software centre [17:09] oh then i have tried it [17:09] dont see drive at all [17:10] you sure? [17:10] yip [17:10] ahh well [17:10] not sure what else to try [17:11] but will find a way or die trying [17:14] xp might work if i can get it to see the sata drive [17:14] then fixboot and fixmbr [17:15] did run Disk Utility as root? [17:15] apparently it defaults to the current user [17:15] ran it from my unity [17:16] even testdisk cant see it [17:16] but bios can [17:17] so there must be a way [17:17] did you try them with sudo? [17:17] yip [17:18] mm that sounds interesting [17:19] very. i will really feel ive accomplished something when its fixed again [17:19] indeed, document the steps if you can [17:20] will try but doing so many things mixes one up some [17:20] ahh we do what we can [17:21] ya [17:21] will be a good one to win though [17:23] then the 2 TB should be easy [17:23] its getting used to what does what on ubcd thats a bit mind boggling [17:23] right [17:24] dunno if its clone faciltity clones mbr as well [17:24] that would be cool if it did [17:30] mazal: what is recoil?\ [17:33] magespawn, it's an app that monitors docs and allows you to search for word inside of docs. [17:33] It's either recoil or recoll [17:33] will search [17:33] Can't remember the spelling lekker [17:34] recoll [17:34] it is [17:34] And I know you can run it either by itself , or as a lense [17:34] http://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/ [17:44] i am out of here for now, late all [17:44] toods magespawn ty [17:44] hi psydroid [17:44] Sleep well magespawn [17:49] im sure he will be back later [17:52] I'm trying to setup my dhcp-server for a Lan network [17:52] do i need entries for domain-name-servers, domain-name?
