WaltherInstalling nvidia-experimental-310 results in instant crash of a graphical desktop when logging in, even though the login screen is fine16:26
WaltherXorg.0.log shows "EE - Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)16:26
WaltherAnyone have any ideas on how to fix?16:27
BluesKajWalther, yup , if your card is older than or less than the geforce 8800xt . it won't run the desktop16:28
BluesKajthe 310 driver is meant for cards 8800xt and up16:28
WaltherI have 620M, should be new enough16:30
Waltherso, any debugging/fixing tips16:31
bjsniderno, it just dropped support for the geforce 7 and below16:34
bjsniderall geforce 8 cards should work, i believe, and newer16:34
bjsniderWalther, need to see xorg.0.log16:34
bjsniderin /var/log16:34
bjsnidersupported cards: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-310.14-driver.html16:35
bjsnider620m is there16:35
BluesKajmy 8400 series isn't supported , basically an entry level ...the 304 driver is it16:38
BluesKajI saw the 310.19 driver available too16:39
BluesKajfor newer higher end cards16:39
bjsniderthe 8400 is on that list16:39
BluesKajhmm, well wonders never cease . thought my elcheapos would be left behind in the dust soon :)16:40
bjsniderthis makes sense because there was a major change in the hardware in between the 7|8 series16:41
bjsniderso while the 6 and 7 aren't that different, the 7 and 8 are16:42
bjsniderthe purevideo feature was added, for one thing, which gives rise to vdpau16:42
Walthercould anyone check whether the 620M is supported16:45
bjsniderit is supported16:45
bjsnideri already mentioned that16:45
Waltherah, sorry, missed a line16:45
bjsniderlet me see that log i asked for, please16:47
Waltherhm, i wonder what is the easiest way to do that through CLI16:49
Waltherpastebin the logfile16:49
bazhangpastebinit16:50
Waltherhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1389391/ should be it16:52
bjsniderWalther, is this a hybrid setup with an intel gpu?16:57
bjsniderline 286: intel(0): [DRI2]   DRI driver: i96517:00
bjsniderright there it's selecting i965 instead of nvidia17:00
bjsnidergpu switching is not supported officially in linux at this point in time17:00
Waltherbjsnider: wel, given a modern CPU you cannot have only the dedicated GPU, as with sandy and ivy bridge intels, the GPU is baked into the CPU itself17:01
Waltheralso, i965? this should be HD400017:01
bjsnideryeah, and then you've also got a discreet one17:01
bjsnideri965 is just the driver name17:02
bjsniderso, you're using ivybridge, which is great17:02
bjsniderWalther, are you doing any serious gaming?17:02
Waltherbjsnider: I would, if I could :P I got among the first into Steam Linux beta17:02
bjsnideroh, swell17:02
WaltherBut yeah, the surprising part was that I *did* have nvidia-current working17:03
bjsnidernever a break17:03
bjsnideranyway, your laptop has an efi bios probably. there may be a setting in there to turn one of the two gpus off17:03
Waltheryeah, I hear there are quite a plenty of skiddies around being all "awsum ubuntu linux gaming" and asking all possible stupid questions17:03
WaltherBut yeah: nvidia-current worked, with bumblebee - I had my basic desktop drawn by Intel GPU and I could run say, glxspheres with Nvidia acceleration through optirun17:04
bjsniderif you're not doing any opengl gaming the answer to this is very easy: use the ivybridge gpu because the intel graphics driver is far and away the best on linux, by approximately one billion times17:04
Waltherbut installing nvidia-experimental-310 results in broken desktop17:04
Waltherand *that's* what I'm trying to figure out17:05
bjsniderbumblebee is an unofficial project. no support in here17:05
bjsniderhave you checked the bios for that setting?17:06
bjsnideryour vendor may have been thoughtful enough to offer you manual control over the gpus17:06
WaltherHaven't checked, because, like I said, it has been working better than nothing already, including the switching possibility, when using nvidia-current17:07
Waltherso I have no interest in disabling one of the gpus, I could just revert back to the older driver17:07
Waltherbut the thing is, I'd like to know *what* goes wrong with the experimental driver, and how to fix it17:08
Waltherbecause it has been said that the new driver is "so much better"17:08
bjsnidersure it is17:08
bjsniderif there's a bumblebee irc channel, try there17:09
bblzhey. I have insanely sensitive hearing, and my CPU fan is blasting on full power all the time while running Ubuntu. Does anyone have simple instructions on how to regulate fan speed according to temperature?17:19
