designbybeck__Greetings cool kids! I have a new Kubuntu 12.10 install on a random low end system hooked via VGA to a 40" TV. The Ubuntu and LinuxMint Cinnoman install I had would let me change the resolution so that it fit better on the TV, however the Kubuntu display settings don't have a many options and/or the highest setting they have is slightly shifted over to the right and It is chopping off part of the image00:39
designbybeck__Any ideas??00:39
fyksenHey! I'm trying to install Kubuntu in virtualbox on ubuntu 12.10. But I get stuck on "Retrieving file 43 of 105 10%. I have downloaded 2 isos. One from Torrent, one form webserver. Any tips? :)00:56

lordievaderadhominem: Have you tried installing it to the harddisk? It has been my experience that a live cd is quite slow. However your system seems to be quite old, this could play a part in this, kde is considered heavy on resources.10:49

adhominemalt shift f12 do nothing on 1st sight11:17
adhominembut when i switch between tty and kde it replaces cool lights effect for black11:18
adhominemi still get a weird feeling of hmm low performance11:18
adhominemwould it be faster on livecd instead persistent?11:19
lordievaderadhominem: Open the system settings -> desktop effects -> advanced and change the render type to xrender (instead of opengl).11:19
lordievaderErr compositing type.11:20
adhominemits on xrend already; will try opengl11:20
lordievaderadhominem: Hmm so it uses the cpu already, instead of the gfx card, for the effects...11:21

adhominemi still get that weird feeling when moving windows arround11:22
adhominemwould it be faster on livecd?11:23

persiaI just started using kubuntu, and have some questions.  Firstly, is there a terminal emulator like Terminator?  I understand quadkonsole's author switched to terminator, but don't seem to be able to find anything else taking up the banner.11:47
=== Catbuntu is now known as UnfoBOT
persiaSecondly, every time I try to add a widget to my desktop, my session crashes: is there some way to report this usefully?11:47
persiaAnd thirdly, I don't seem to be able to get iBus working for Japanese input: is there known-good documentation somewhere?  Searching the web keeps showing ancient bug reports.11:48
=== UnfoBOT is now known as Catbuntu
lordievaderpersia: Konsole is a nice terminal emulator, what is exactly the problem with Ibus? Got it running here myself, works fine with Japanese.12:03
=== k0s is now known as kaktuc[qw]
persialordievader: Konsole is indeed nice, but I don't like the interaction between screen splits and tabs - perhaps just a personal preference.12:06
persiaRe: iBus: pressing 半角/全角 doesn't switch my input mode with ibus-anthy.  Do I need to so something special for setup beyond installation of ibus-anthy?12:07
lordievaderpersia: You could use byobu/screen to take care of the screen splits.12:08
persiaIndeed, or tmux inside konsole.  I'll just leave that for another project :)12:08
lordievaderpersia: I'm sorry pressing what? Let me check what packages I have installed here.12:09
persiahankaku/zenkaku: it's the key usually between "escape" and "tab" on jp106 keyboards.  In practice, I'm really pressing the かな key on a Mac keyboard that sends "Hangul", but that's not an important detail :)12:10
lordievaderpersia: Ah I see, anyhow I have the following packages installed: ibus ibus-anthy ibus-qt4 and a few others but I do not think they are necessary.12:11
lordievaderpersia: How did you setup ibus?12:13
persia`apt-get --no-install-recommends install ibus-qt4 ibus-anthy`12:13
lordievaderpersia: I mean the settings, not how you installed it :P12:14
persiaI ran ibus-setup, but it won't let me select anthy ("Japanese is greyed-out").12:14
lordievaderpersia: I had the same problem, the solution is annoyingly simple, click the arrow next to japanese, it unfolds and select Anthy.12:15
persiaWow.  That is indeed *annoyingly* simple.  Now I get the A5 icon on my panel.12:17
lordievaderpersia: That should mean that japanese input is enabled.12:18
persiaUnfortunately, it seems not to respond to keypresses yet.  I'll try restarting the session, as attempting to restart individual applications to test hasn't been successful.12:19
persiaNo, that didn't work either, and re-running ibus-setup reported that ibus hadn't been started in the session.  Playing around a bit got me all input in katakana based on the kana keymapings (dunno why), but not normal anthy.12:23
lordievaderpersia: Did you start ibus?12:23
persiaHow did you configure it.12:23
persiaYes.12:23
persiaAlthough it would likely be better if I wasn't starting it per-session.12:24
lordievaderpersia: To start off I use ctl + space to enable it. Under the general tab I believe I didn't change anything, under the input method I got only Japanes - Anthy and "Customize active input methods" is ticked. Under advanced both options are ticked.12:25
persiaYour setup matches mine.  Seems the kana comes from the keyboard layout (switch with Ctrl+Alt+K), and so is unrelated.12:26
persiaOh, except Ctrl+Space also doesn't switch input :)12:27
lordievaderpersia: You said you use an actual Japanese keyboard? That could be the difference I simply use a qwerty keyboard.12:27
persiaThe hardware shouldn't make a difference.  In previous environments, I've used both US and JP qwerty and DE qwertz with anthy successfully.12:29
lordievaderpersia: I agree that it shouldn't.12:30
persiaIf you run `ps ax | grep ibus`, do you get "ibus-daemon --xim" or something else?12:30
lordievaderpersia: Among things: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1404519/12:32
persiaThat's the same as mine.  Hrm.12:33
lordievaderpersia: Also the other processes?12:33
persiaWell, thanks a lot for confirming I should have it right.  I wonder which final bit is missing.12:33
lordievaderpersia: But do you also have the other processes running?12:33
lordievaderpersia: Because maybe the packages I deemed not important earlier are actually important...12:34
persiaYes, precisely the same list.12:35
lordievaderpersia: Hmm... I'm quite out of ideas here, sorry.12:36
persiaNo worries.  Thanks for the help.12:37
lordievaderpersia: No problem, hope you figure it out.12:38

georgesfrom the dbus man :: The standard systemwide and per-session message bus setups are configured in the files "/usr/local/etc/dbus-1/system.conf" and "/usr/local/etc/dbus-1/session.conf". three18tihi.  I just installed Kubuntu 12.10 x86_64.  I have two "NVIDIA Corporation GF104 [GeForce GTX 460]", I've installed each version of the nvidia proprietary drivers (from nvidia-current to the 310 version, I currently have the 310 version installed), and three monitors.  The problem is I can only get one video card to work at a time.  The first card works, and both display ports work.  The second card20:47
three18tiworks if I pull out the first card.  However, with both cards attached, the display manager displays DVI1-0 DVI-1-1 DVI-1-2 AND DVI-1-3 however, DVI-I-0 and 1 are greyed out asif nothing is connected.20:47
three18tiI've tried both bridged an un bridged mode, and if I leave the first card plugged in but disconnect the monitor, not of the monitors power up.20:47
three18tiis there a way to manually edit the display settings perhaps?  It's almost as though the card doesn't see anything attached20:59
three18tiactually, xrandr doesn't see the monitors connected at all when run from the cli.21:01
erdem_hi everybody21:04
randomvasehi21:05
three18tihere's the interesting thing, the nvidia x server settings utility sees the monitor and can tell the model.21:06

phoenix_firebrdcan someone check if microblogger plasma widget works with twitter21:12
three18tiha! I enabled the monitor in nvidia settings, now the desktop bleeds from monitor 1 to monitor 2, the third monitor powers on now, but I'm unable to control it via KDE controls.21:21
three18tiit seems to be a problem with xorg + kde21:27
