Cheri703 | computer is set back up with 12.04 :) I have a script that I keep updated so I can just run it and it'll install everything for me. I still have to do the settings and whatnot once it's installed, but it saves SO much time and energy | 00:45 |
---|---|---|
dzho | oh? | 00:57 |
Cheri703 | yeah, just a basic bash script. well, 2. one is set up to add all of the "extra" repositories I need, then the other one runs a "sudo apt-get install <8billionprograms>" and then removes a few. I just update it as I add or remove programs from my normal daily use. I also have a list of what settings need to be set and how, what things to add to fstab to make my windows share auto-mount, etc etc. I keep it and a few other things (that I make | 01:08 |
Cheri703 | symlinks to) all in my ubuntu one folder, so when setting up a computer, all I have to do is make sure it has internet, run the initial updates, sign in to ubuntu one, and run 2 scripts, then walk away for a while while it does its thing installing. I come back to hit enter a few times on the wine installer, then wander off again and come back to a computer that is 90% set up for me, and the remaining 10% a step by step thing so I don't | 01:08 |
Cheri703 | forget stuff. I hate going to do something and realizing I forgot to set it up after a reinstall, and I need it RIGHT NOW and it's going to be a hassle | 01:08 |
drkokandy | Every time I boot up one of my two 12.10 machines I get 1 or 2 system error notifications... I clear them, and then everything is fine... but still, it's kind of irritating. | 01:25 |
dzho | dpkg --get-selections > all-my-installed-packages | 01:40 |
dzho | then I think you can dpkg --set-selections < all-my-installed-packages && apt-get dselect-upgrade | 01:42 |
Cheri703 | I looked for that, and I don't necessarily want *all* installed packages, sometimes you install random things and you don't necessarily need them on the next install, also I was downgrading (at least this time) and didn't want to screw anything up. :) it works for me | 02:05 |
dzho | sure, just sayin' | 02:06 |
dzho | all-my-installed-packages is just a text file, fwiw | 02:06 |
Cheri703 | but then I have to parse through it and figure out "oh, x program installed a-f additional packages" and I don't care :) I just want the top level stuff | 02:07 |
dzho | yeah | 02:21 |

thafreak | so either my new gold certified power supply isn't really any more efficient than the bronze one I was testing with | 15:52 |
thafreak | or those wd red drives really pull a lot of juice | 15:52 |
thafreak | the box was idling about 10w higher in it's final config | 15:53 |
thafreak | it's still under 50w though...probably want to measure it again when it's doing like a zfs scrub though | 15:53 |
