baegleAbout to install Xubuntu for the first time. I'm looking at the full disk encryption option and it's telling me (a) I'll need to put the password in every time the computer starts and (b) "short password" no matter how long the password is. Will I really need it on every boot?03:27
v1adimirmixed case with a number for the password?..03:32
Unit193Full disk encryption, you'll need the password to dycrypt it.  Do you honestly need this option?  You should be able to encrypt your home dir if you'd rather.03:34
Qasimhi03:34
v1adimirplus the partition should be zeroed and all that b4 the encryption anyway, to do it properly03:35

v1adimirUnit193: right :)03:36
Unit193Qasim: Have you seen https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/samba-fileserver.html ?03:37
baegleIt's a small laptop, I'm involved in a major federal lawsuit, I'm a principal in 3 companies, and I deal with client information sometimes. I don't need plausible deniability, so I figure I don't need to write garbage to the whole disk.03:37
Qasimlet me chk that link03:39
v1adimiroh sorz 2 go on about it, but 0 (and all the good stuff) is also against decrypting (btw)03:40
baegleeven on a brand new hdd?03:40
Unit193Meh, not really needed.  Seen https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedHome ?03:40
baegleUnit193: Then I sort of have to remember to always leave all my work in my home. Won't I have to be concerned with /tmp/, swap, proc, and anything I do in /var/ ?03:42
well_laid_lawnif you're really paranoid just use a live cd so nothing is saved03:44
Scotts87today is my first day on Xubuntu!!! Love it so far03:47
baeglewell_laid_lawn: As I said, I'm not involved in criminal activity and I don't need plausible deniability. I'm just looking for strong + convenient. As a dev, I think having to keep everything in /home/ is inconvenient. Only using a live cd is even more so.03:49
StormyKeysUsing a Sony Vaio Laptop 8yrs old - changed from Ubuntu to Xubuntu - now downloads are 20-30% slower as everything else . Any help here ?03:52

Unit193!gksudo03:57
ubottuIf you need to run graphical applications as root, use « gksudo », as it will set up the environment more appropriately. Never just use "sudo"! (See http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to know why)03:57

megatorushi - yesterday i made a xubuntu 12.04.1 liveusb from the official x86 iso, and used it to install on a box running windows, to make a dual-boot system.14:11
megatorushowever, the grub bootloader was installed on the usb stick, and not on the main hd!14:11
megatorusthe rest of the os installed on the disk... but in order to be able to boot i now need to have the usb stick in, so it sees grub and gives me the option to boot linux14:12
megatoruswithout the stick, it just goes to booting windows.14:13
megatorusjust wondering, is it a known problem that xubuntu doesn't put grub on the correct drive?14:13
GridCubeit should14:20
GridCubei always use pendrives and that never happened to me14:21
GridCubemegatorus, put the pendrive and boot to xubuntu. then install boot-repair and fix it14:21
megatorusGridCube: ah, that sounds easy enough. :) didn't know that existed.14:24
megatorusmy googling revealed suggestions to boot from a usb stick and then do some manual grub-installing on the hd... but seeing as how my only usb stick was no longer standalone-bootable i thought i'd have to go get another one. :)14:25
GridCubeit does, because grub is weird sometimes14:25
megatorusso boot-repair will be able to install grub on the hd, even though i'm booting from usbsticgrub -> hd?14:26
GridCubeonce you are in your proper system, remove the pendrive before runing boot-repair, it "should" be fine14:26
GridCubeit should. i cant promise that i would14:26
megatorushaha sure, i understand the hedge :)14:26
megatorusand it will automagically detect the windows partition and set up grub for dual-boot, too?14:27
megatorus(or at least have the option for me to tell it?)14:27
GridCubeyes it will14:27
GridCubeboot-repair its a little sorcery gem of the computamantic worlds14:28
megatorusgreat. thanks for your help - i'll give it a try next time i'm at that box. (for now, i just left the usb stick in :) )14:28
megatorusi'll try to remember to let you know how it went. ;) will likely be around ... end of january. heh14:29

nyRednekhey, if i use a few subdomain redirects from, say, afraid.org, can i configure apache to respond differently depending on the redirect?20:36
knomeafaik apache supports referrer-filtering, but you'd want to refer to their documentation - and your server administration (if it isn't you) if that's possible20:37
nyRednekknome: it's a vps, so i'm guessing administration is me20:40
Unit193Most of the time that means you, unless it's a "managed" VPS (I think)20:42
nyRednekyeah, was wondering if just setting up virtual hosts in apache would do the trick20:43
nyRednekcause it's a direct subdomain to ip translation20:44
Unit193vhost is rednek.afraid.org.20:44
apersondoes anyone else have the problem where xfce's menu sometimes uses larger versions of icons and they look out  of place?20:44
apersonhttp://i.imgur.com/nfJGF.png example of what I mean20:45
knomeaperson, that's most probably a bug in the package/source of the game20:46
apersonthat happens for quite a few programs20:46
apersonthat only being an example20:46
knomecan you name a few more examples then?20:46
Unit193Are they all from the Ubuntu repos?20:46
apersonsome are, some are from ppas20:47
apersongcolor2, bpython, idle, to name a few are also experiencing this20:47
apersonxfce also refuses to use my icon theme20:47
knomemost probably bugs in the packages20:48
nyRednekit's actually something else...but that's the idea20:48
apersonin any case, the menu shouldn't allow that to happen20:48
knomeaperson, probably not, but the fix is easier done on the packages, so you should contact their maintainers20:49
knomeit's good practice to try to be nice for other developers too (that's why it'd make more sense if the packages were fixed)20:49
Unit193nyRednek: Yep, that should be pretty easy to do, I have paste.mydomain.tld in another httpd do pretty much what it sounds like you want to do.20:50
apersonI'd chance to say that if they didn't do it appropriately now, they wouldn't care to fix it just for xfce.  I'll try to contact the developers, but I don't expect much20:51
knomeaperson, that's not about xfce. it's about shipping correct icons for systems to use anyway20:51
apersonright20:51
apersonbut some of these packages I know will not be fixed20:52
apersonand when it's a matter that could be fixed by the menu just resizing the icon, it seems simpler to just ask that it does that20:52
knomethat's sad. but anyway, if it bugs you, you should be able to fix it yourself. i doubt the xfce menu will be pathced because other developers are reluctant to fi a simple icon :)20:52
knomenot really...20:53
apersonit's easier to bug one group than dozens20:53
knomethe icon themes have specific size icons and a specification how that works for a reason20:53
Unit193Could be able to fix it, then send them a "patch"20:53
apersonUnit193⤜ I am a user, I CBA to fix anything.  Only report20:53
knomethe problem wouldn't exist, if the developers of the apps shipped one scalable icon20:54
apersonknome⤜ two sides of the coin20:54
apersonproblem would also not exist if the menu resized icons20:54
apersonyou can argue either way20:55
knomeyeah, but that (most probably) isn't going to happen, because the xfce menu is already following a spec.20:55
knomeyou could argue the spec is broken, but it's a long road to fix the spec, get everybody following the new spec and getting the new code done.20:55
apersonand it's hard for me (a single use) to contact dozens of maintainers to get them to fix anything.  we're all arguing things that will never happen20:56
apersonI suppose I have my answer then20:56
knomethen fix it for your own system20:56
apersonno20:57
knomethen live with it :)20:57
knomeopen source is a doacracy, not a democracy20:57
knomethose who do, decide (what they do)20:57
apersonand if you want people to use it, you can't expect everyone to go fix everything themeselves.20:57
Unit193And while that most of the time is a pain, or unusable, pretty sure gthumb and editing the image would fix this one.20:58
apersonthe simple fact is: it doesn't work as expected, so I won't use it20:58
drcPersonally, I could care less if you use anything...that's your problem.20:58
apersonah, so you care, drc20:58
knomei've provided you the simplest way to fix this (and i know how things work), if that isn't ok for you, live with it20:58
knomei don't mean to be rude, but that's how it is :)20:59
