phillwHi good people, any news on bug 964705 for ubuntu? Others seem to be taking it more seriously?00:31
ubot2`Launchpad bug 964705 in network-manager (Ubuntu) "System policy prevents modification of network settings for all users" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/96470500:31
phillwit should be a really easy 'cherry pick'?00:32
ScottKphillw: It's really not an #ubuntu-release question.  I'd talk to cyphermox.00:33
phillwScottK: I know, but I start here and then you good people tell me where to go (politely :) )00:33
ScottKphillw: That's not what this channel is for.00:36
phillwScottK: please let me know which channel is? As I chase bugs up, I bounced around... that is not a problem for me. i learn more each time I chase stuff :) So, in this case... which channel should I ask on about debian having a fix that I want into ubuntu?00:39
ScottK#ubuntu-devel would be better.00:40
phillwthanks :) ... I enter that room rarely, but I will ask them.00:42
phillwScottK: oh S#1T, it's looking like polkit :(01:47
mdeslaurphillw: I'm not quite sure what the issue is....by default network manager wants to create system-wide network connections, so you need to be an admin, else you need to uncheck the box.02:37
mdeslaurphillw: doesn't seem like a bug to me.02:37
phillwmdeslaur: Nor am I, my query to #ubuntu-devel is why has it been  rated and fixed by others?02:39
mdeslaurphillw: rated and fixed?02:39
mdeslaurphillw: I'm not quite sure what that means02:40
phillwmdeslaur: openSUSE rated it critical.. Fix released.02:41
phillwDebian .. Fix released.02:41
mdeslaurphillw: yeah, debian fixed it so it works just like Ubuntu02:42
mdeslaurInstall a PolicyKit pkla file which allows members of group netdev or sudo02:42
mdeslaur     to create system-wide network connections without being prompted for the02:42
mdeslaur     admin password.02:42
mdeslaurphillw: that's exactly how ubuntu behaves02:42
phillwmdeslaur: I'm not here for a fight of which is the better way to do things? All I want is no bugs reported :D02:43
mdeslaurphillw: well, that won't really happen. The ubuntu bug is about people wanting regular non-admin users to be able to create system-wide network connections without being in the admin group. That's not going to happen.02:44
phillwbug 100834402:45
ubot2`Launchpad bug 1008344 in language-selector (Ubuntu) "checks "admin" group membership instead of querying polkit" [Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/100834402:45
phillwdoes it?02:45
mdeslaurphillw: that's a completely different issue02:46
mdeslaurand yes, bug 1008344 does seem valid02:47
ubot2`Launchpad bug 1008344 in language-selector (Ubuntu) "checks "admin" group membership instead of querying polkit" [Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/100834402:47
phillwis it? so some one cannot connect via network is invalid, but attempting to change language is?02:48
mdeslaurphillw: two completely different bugs. The first some is that people don't want to be an admin to modify system network connections. That's a security issue, and the current behaviour is the correct behaviour. The second bug is that language-selector is checking groups itself, instead of relying on the groups configured in policykit02:50
mdeslaurphillw: the second bug is a valid issue, the first is not.02:50
phillwmdeslaur: please do note, I'm just being devils advocate and not "having a go" at you. I have been told that I can be 'head strong'.02:50
mdeslaurphillw: the two are _completely_ different issues and are unrelated.02:50
phillwmdeslaur: okies, so why has debian issued a fix and ubuntu not?02:51
mdeslaurphillw: don't worry, I have a nice hard shell :)02:51
* phillw just popping out for nicotine :)02:51
mdeslaurphillw: the debian bug that is linked is that their network manager was failing _completely_, so they fixed it by making it equivalent to the current ubuntu behaviour02:51
mdeslaurphillw: it's not the same bug at all02:52
mdeslaurphillw: but someone decided to link them, even though they are unrelated02:52
phillwmdeslaur: in that case, would you be so kind as to split it up?02:56
phillwI can only go off bug updates that I see. You people know much more about the 'innards' than me.02:57
phillwmdeslaur: I've taken the time to actually read through bug 964705 and I'm now more confused than I was before...03:16
ubot2`Launchpad bug 964705 in NetworkManager "System policy prevents modification of network settings for all users" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/96470503:16
phillwmdeslaur: when people 'decide' stuff, may be they should take into account people like jpujades ?03:21
mdeslaurphillw: he should read the policykit documentation to create his local modifications in the right place so they don't get overwritten03:52
phillwmdeslaur: with the greatest regard for you, and others who support versions of ed-ubuntu in its various forms... Maybe some one could actually reach out to him?03:54
mdeslaurphillw: it's a bug tracker, not a support desk. Feel free to write him if you'd like.03:54
phillwmdeslaur: well, that comes as spectacular fail? Is / Are there any 'support desk' people for Edu-buntu ? No, there are not. When people go the mile to install ubuntu as the system at a place of education, they are going out on a limb. I'm a bit down with your answer to that problem. :(03:58
ScottKphillw: Please take it elsewhere.  This isn't a channel for arguing about bugs.03:59
phillwmdeslaur: if you wish to move from -devel and here as we get told off, please /j ##phillw my apoligies to ScottK04:01
