Dabo_I have ubuntu 12.04 lts installed with windows 7, I believe it is dual booting, but I think it is wubi. Anyways, it is in a seperate partion. I want to remove it and re-install ubuntu into a bigger space, and all. My question is, will it harm my computer to remove/format the partition that ubuntu is in and then install ubuntu again using a live cd?09:48
Dabo_Actually, never mind, sorry. I can't really stay up any later tonight, I will come back in teh morning09:51

Dabo_I currently have Ubuntu 12.04 installed dual booting with windows 7, in a separate partion. I believe I used the wubi installer. My question is will it harm my computer if I just format the ubuntu partion? And if it will not, would it be a better idea to use windows or to use a live cd with gparted to format it. Last time I used gparted to edit my system, windows freaked out and checked all the disks, but it booted up fine.18:12
Dabo_I do have a backup of all my data in ubuntu stored in windows. And after formating the partion I would want to re install ubuntu using a live cd.18:13
coalwaterDabo_: there's one concern18:15
coalwaterDabo_: it might ruin ur boot18:15
Dabo_windows boot?18:15
coalwaterDabo_: do u use grub or windows boot18:15
Dabo_I use windows bootloader currently, but if Grub will be able to boot into windows, then I am fine with using it.18:15
Dabo_Would installing with a live CD install grub?>18:16
coalwaterDabo_: if you want to login into ubuntu do u go windows boot > grub > ubuntu ?18:16
Dabo_It usually goes directly from windows boot to ubuntu18:16
Dabo_And currently I have a totally messed up ubuntu system, that I just want to format and then re install correctly.18:16
coalwaterif you're going to reinstall i suppose ubuntu will update the grub after installation anyway18:17
coalwateri was thinking ull remove ubuntu for good18:17
Dabo_Ah, yes. I am not sure if I currently have grub, because I used the windows installer. Part of the thing is just removing Ubuntu that was installed through windows, and then getting a real version of ubuntu that actually uses the amount of space I can give it.18:19
coalwaterwait wait, is ubuntu a file under windows? or ext4 partition ?18:19
Dabo_it is in a nfts partion.18:20
Dabo_but I believe I used the downloadable windows installer18:20
coalwaterin windows u see ubuntu as one huge file?18:20
coalwater.img i think ?18:20
coalwateror something18:20
Dabo_I see the root.disk in a seperate hard disk,18:20
coalwateryea i understand now18:20
Dabo_like I have C:, B:, and a ubuntu drive18:20
coalwateru should find ubuntu in the add/remove inside windows18:21
coalwatercheck that18:21
Dabo_I tried that, and it didn't really do anything18:21
Dabo_I will get hte error18:21
coalwaterok u can delete it manually and partition, but ull need to update the boot.ini manually, can u do that ?18:21
coalwateror nvm, grub will update it18:22
Dabo_Ok, so it would be safe to just format the ubuntu drive? if I am re installing ubuntu using a live CD18:22
Dabo_oh, and the windows uninstaller says "An error occured while trying to uninstall Ubuntu. You do not have access to L:\ubuntu\uninstall-wubi.ece.18:23
coalwaterhmm well idk about the windows uninstaller, but i think u can just ignore it, u can format the partition but when booting choosing ubuntu will fail, until u update the boot.ini or install the new ubuntu18:24
Dabo_ok18:25
Dabo_But booting into windows will work?18:25
coalwateryea it should work just fine18:25
Dabo_Ok, thank you.18:25
Dabo_BTW currently ubuntu won't boot anyways :P18:25
coalwaterok lets talk about that if u have time18:25
Dabo_I messed it up using GParted.18:25
coalwaterwhat do u get when trying to boot18:25
Dabo_a message about the file windows failed to start." and the file /ubuntu/winboot/wubildr.mbr was missing or corrupt. I can't remember exactly18:26
Dabo_That is because I had moved and expanded the ubuntu partion in a live CD18:27
coalwaterok maybe because the partition letter changed18:27
Dabo_I am going to format the Ubuntu partion now, though.18:27
coalwaterbtw u can mount the image file in live cd18:28
coalwaterif u need any files18:28
Dabo_That is how I made a backup :)18:28
coalwaterdid u try to update the gurb from there?18:28
coalwaterafter mounting18:28
Dabo_I didn't,18:28
coalwatercould be a last try, if u still want to keep it18:28
Dabo_I would rather, at this point just re install it.18:29
coalwateryea, ok, good luck18:29
Dabo_because I think also that I want to create a swap partion, and have the ubuntu drive be a around 50gb instead of 2018:29
Dabo_oh, and one more thing18:30
coalwaterhow comfortable are u with partitioning and stuff18:30
Dabo_Will it work for me to create the drive for ubuntu to be in in windows? or would that mess up the live CD install18:30
coalwaterthis is still the same method u already have18:31
coalwateran image file inside windows18:31
Dabo_I meen, will it install into NTFS, or does it need ext4.18:31
Dabo_image file? Would GParted see that as a drive?18:32
coalwaternope18:32
Dabo_it does see ubuntu as a drive though...18:32
coalwatercause u created the ubuntu image file in a separate partition18:32
Dabo_http://i48.tinypic.com/1orwjq.png18:32
Dabo_the root.disk is in a seperate partion18:32
coalwateryea18:32
Dabo_that is on the live CD18:33
coalwaterthere's a partition called ubuntu, that has the image file18:33
Dabo_yes18:33
Dabo_I just want to format that partion18:33
Dabo_now18:33
coalwaterdo it lol18:33
coalwaterbut if there's nothing else other than ubuntu, try ext418:33
Dabo_Would it be better to delete it in windows? And then create an ext4 with the live CD?18:34
coalwaterand u might want to split a 4gb swap after it18:34
coalwaterdoesn't matter much18:34
Dabo_or to just let it install into a windows NTFS. Ok18:34
coalwaterwhy do u want it to be ntfs18:34
Dabo_I am just saying, that is what windows makes it18:34
coalwaterdont install from wubi18:35
coalwaterboot from the cd18:35
Dabo_I don't need it to be either one, that is what I am asking.18:35
Dabo_I will18:35
Dabo_Part of me re installing it is so that I can have it installed via live CD instead of windows wubi18:35
coalwaterif u want to try u can try virtual box image and install on it18:36
coalwaterto try the experience without playing with ur system18:36
Dabo_virtual box image?18:36
coalwateru know virtual box right ?18:36
Dabo_yes, I think so.18:37
coalwaterit's easy, u can play with a test image and do w/e you want18:38
Dabo_ah, I see.18:38
Dabo_I just deleted the Ubuntu partion, I think I will boot up into the live CD now to install.18:38
coalwaterokay, good luck18:39
Dabo-Rebooting in to my live cd now,18:43
coalwaterDabo-: o,forgot  u can use the internet while using the live cd lol18:55
Dabo-I have a question. Using the ubuntu installer I have made a ext4 partion and a swap partion when I click install now, it asks me to define a root file system.18:57
Dabo_Sorry D:19:00
Dabo_Disconnected accidentally19:00
Dabo_It is installing.19:06
coalwaterDabo_: did u choose the root partition ?19:14
Dabo_I just installed it and it fails to boot. I fixed that this by telling it to mount sda7 as /19:19
Dabo_But now I still can't boot into ubuntu19:20
Dabo_Would that be because I selected sda7 as where to install the bootloader?19:21
coalwaterDabo_: what do u get when u boot19:27
Dabo_Option to boot into windows or ubuntu, in the windows bootloader19:29
Dabo_Ubuntu produces the same error as before19:29
Dabo_I can boot into windows19:30
Dabo_I an currently in ubuntu live CD.19:38
Dabo_It works now :D. Thanks, bye.!19:40
