xubuntu388Hullo, I recently installed xubuntu 10.0.4 and am wondering if there is a way to make it so my password is not required each time I open the package manager. Thanks02:03

xellosI built a pc and it's pretty decked out. I was told not to run Xubuntu because it is "slow" is this true? I really like XFCE interface and I would prefer to have that without compromising speed. So was the report inaccurate or correct?04:06
pleia2"slow" isn't exactly a scientific measurement :)04:08
pleia2it runs great on my netbook, 1.6ghz w/ 1G of ram04:08
pleia2so I can't imagine it would be slow on a machine that's "pretty decked out"04:08
pleia2but I guess it depends on what you're comparing it to, lubuntu is faster, ubuntu and kubuntu are slower04:09
Unit193AntiX and SliTaz are also so much faster, but this is a "complete desktop"04:09
xellosI see. I have just only heard of people using Xubuntu to save old computers I don't see much about how it functions on the not old devices.04:10
pleia2I use it on my fastest computer ;)04:11
rywillyhello04:12
pleia2it's not built for slower computers, it stays out of your way resource-wise so you can use those 16G of RAM to process images rather than draw windows :)04:12
rywillyi just tried xubuntu for the first time :)04:12
pleia2welcome rywilly04:12
rywillyi used Fedora and openSUSE a few years ago.04:12
xellosWell thanks for the support.04:13
pleia2xellos: sure, good luck :)04:13
Unit193xellos: Try a live CD, see for yourself before installing.04:13
pleia2liveCDs are slow :P04:13
pleia2if you want a speed test, that's really not the way to go04:13
Unit193True, gives an idea though, and toram should. :D04:14
rywillythis computer has a AMD A10-5800K APU and a 60GB SSD. It's FAST! Literally boots up in a couple seconds and logs in almost instantly.04:15
rywillyanything i do in xfce responds instantly04:15
ForCom5Greetings Xubuntu!04:17
rywillyhello04:17
ForCom5Just unbricked my laptop thanks to Linux! I, am one happy clam.04:18

ubottubug 867806 in lightdm (Ubuntu) "df -h permission denied error" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/86780604:46
rywillyi need to by a hard drive for my new computer, any suggestions on which brand/model?06:18
rywillyi have a 60GB SSD for the OS, but i want a 500GB-1TB drive for mass storage06:19
rywillySATA III 7200rpm is what i want, but not sure which models are the most reliable06:20
onlyHumanseagate black label06:20
rywillywhat's black label? i've heard of Seagate Barracuda06:23
onlyHumanthe barracuda has diff versions. red / green / blue / black06:32
onlyHumanget the one with the black dot (NOT green dot)06:33
bourboI'm trying to install Xubuntu and I'm having big problems with the open source nVidia drivers with my GeForce 6150. Is there any to install the proprietary nVidia drivers WHILE installing Xubuntu so I can bypass the open source drivers altogether?06:33
onlyHumani dont believe you can in 12.1006:35
onlyHuman12.04 yes06:35
bourboHow was it possible under 12.04? What changed?06:36
onlyHumanthey moved the Additional Drivers to the software updater06:36
onlyHuman(moved in 12.10)06:37
bourboI see. The screen corruption makes it impossible to see what I'm doing. Is there a way to modify the ISO to install the driver, or do you think that would be nontrivial?06:38
onlyHumanyou sure you can. but youll have to wait for some one with more experiance than i06:38
bourboI've got three graphics options and all three are giving me grief under Linux. It's frustrating.06:39
onlyHumanhave you tried in #nvidia06:39
onlyHuman?06:39
bourboNot yet. I figured it was more an install workaround since the open source driver bug is known and not yet solved.06:40
onlyHumandead there this time any way06:40
rywillyonlyHuman, i see, thanks for the info06:41
bourboAnother question.06:43
bourboIs there a way to "automate" installing Additional Drivers and then installing the proprietary driver via script? Perhaps I can do it in a text mode shell.06:43
onlyHuman&& between commands is how i batch script06:45
onlyHumansudo apt-get install blahblah && sudo apt-get install blah-whatever && bash lalala.sh06:46
onlyHumanbut if you cant see what is going on you may need to modify the sudoers folder to avoid typing the passcode06:47
rywillydoes this seem like a good drive? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1682214875606:48
rywillyit has a 5 year warranty06:48
onlyHumanits not the worlds greatest but it has a decent track record06:50
onlyHumanwill work great considering you are pairing it with an SSD06:51
onlyHumanjust remember, it will spin down from inactivity causing momentary system lock-up.06:55
rywillyonlyHuman, i was thinking it would be good for it to spin down, because it may not be accessed very often06:57
rywillyi have alot of audio files, pictures, and other projects that i may only look at occasionally06:58
onlyHumanyeah just wanted to remind you. people often forget after having an SSD for a while06:58
rywillyany active projects, i figure i could copy to the SSD for editing06:59
rywillyheh, yeah SSD is a new concept for me...06:59
rywillyi wasn't sure about getting one, but i decided to try it. It's an Intel, not sure what model, but it's supposed to be one of the faster onces07:00
onlyHumani would advise moving /tmp to ram to extend the life07:00
rywillyoh...i was wondering about that07:01
rywillyi have 8GB of RAM07:01
onlyHumanhttp://www.upubuntu.com/2012/06/11-tips-to-speed-up-computers-running.html07:02
* rywilly looks07:03
rywillyi'm familiar with how linux works, generally speaking, i've used it a few times over the last 10 years,07:04
rywillybut i constantly have to search the internet for how to do this or that in the command console07:04
rywillyerr terminal07:05
rywillyi really want to get away from paying ~$130 for windows07:05
onlyHumanmy fist broke my hard drive while giving server 2012 a test drive  :(07:07
rywillybummer :( i'v only had 2 hard drive failures in my life, one in the '90s (a 40MB hd, lol) and the second one about 8 years ago, but then after sitting for a year, i was able to copy files off of it one last time07:08
onlyHumani've had tons fail. most were toshiba, fujitsu or WD07:14
rywillyoh07:14
rywillyfunny, i've heard people say to stay away from seagate and only go with WD, lol07:14
rywillyi think it depends on the model more than the brand, probably07:15
onlyHumanlots of ppl are mad that seagate incorperated in the caymen islands to avoid taxes07:16
rywillyi have a samsung 500GB that hasn't had any problems after a couple years07:16
rywillyoh07:16
onlyHumanseagate got a clue and bought Solyndra's old headquaters and started paying taxes again07:17
rywillyo07:18
rywillywell...i guess i can't watch netflix while downloading a torrent, hehe07:19
rywillyi wish xfce had a better "File Operation Process" dialog :-/ I always thought a file transfer job should show a complete list of what it is going to do, and what it has done, and what over-write options are selected, and success/error status of everything so i can walk away knowing it won't ask me a question 30 minutes later and sit there doing nothing07:46
onlyHumanat least its not missing the "Skip All" button any more. now THAT sucked.07:54
rywillyheh07:55
rywillyyou mean, you don't like clicking Skip 1000 times?07:55
onlyHumandoes this video play?:  http://98.207.221.176/home//index.php?route=product/product&path=59&product_id=5007:56
rywillyehhh...no07:57
rywillybut i think i need to reboot07:57
rywillybrb07:58
onlyHumank07:58
rywillyonlyHuman, have you heard of euphoria? (the programming language)08:01
onlyHumannope08:02
rywillyhttp://openeuphoria.org/08:02
onlyHumanjust found out about sinatra today as well08:02
rywillyoh, i haven't heard of taht08:02
rywillyi'm on freenode because the #euphoria channel has been here for years. Found out xubuntu has a channel here, so i thought i'd come in here :)08:03
pleia2this is all quite off-topic, can we move this over to #xubuntu-offtopic? :)08:03
pleia2(this is actually just a support channel)08:03
rywillyok, sorry about that08:04

Ronalds_MHi everybody13:23
marsjehow do I get rid of the scrollbars that appear only when you hover over it? I want to get rid of those once and for all...13:23
Ronalds_MI'm using XFCE on my ubuntu for a while, or xubuntu... and I miss scale, expose, hot corners effect from compiz13:24
Ronalds_Mmarsje, I think there was this ability in ubuntu tweak app13:25
marsjeRonalds_M: it works in both ubuntu and xubuntu? (the "feature" seems to be present in both)13:26
Ronalds_Mubuntu tweak-> tweaks-> miscelenous13:26
Ronalds_Moverlay scrollbars13:26
Ronalds_Mmaybe it works :D13:26
Ronalds_Manyway, scale, expose, hot corners without compiz? I founded skippy app, but it doesn't have hot corners13:28
Ronalds_Mthere is telescope app in Arch repositories, but it doesn't work on ubuntu..13:29
Ronalds_Mlooks like I shoud bring this idea to ubuntu forums, or something, cause XFCE is super fast and is wonderfull alternative to unity, but misses expose/scale function you can get in unity with compiz13:37
smiley1983I'm maintaining a Xubuntu 12.04 install for someone else. When the wireless is unable to connect, it brings up a wireless authentication dialog. If this is left alone, it brings up more of them, creating a massive stack of windows on top of each other, which appear not to die when you close them because there are so many. How can I prevent it from ever bringing up this authentication dialog at all, and get it to instead continue quietly14:56
smiley1983I can go as far as changing the source if necessary, but I'm hoping someone will know a neater solution.14:58
tomatopotatoI'm getting "error: environment block to small Press any key to continue" any idea why?16:47
shmooveIn Settings > Mouse and Touchpad, acceleration affects the rate of change of mouse speed, not the actual mouse speed right?17:49
squirreljedi516is it possible to have 1 hard drive with xubuntu 12.10 on it and add 5 more hard drives in a raid?18:36
xubuntu533Hi, I fell in love with the design of this desktop: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:XFCE-4.10-Desktop.png And this is how I've found my way to Linux. Obviously this is the desktop environment XFCE 12.10 which is the default one of the latest XUBUNTU version. But why do the screenshots on http://xubuntu.org/screenshots/  show a different environment? Thanks20:31
xubuntu533(Sorry I meant XFCE 4.10)20:32
Unit193xubuntu533: It's the same, just different little default config.  It's even using the same Theme.20:34
Unit193(Pretty sure that is even Xubuntu)20:34
xubuntu533Unit193: Thanks for the quick response. I am totally new to Linux/Xubuntu. So if I want this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:XFCE-4.10-Desktop.png desktop, I have to download XUBUNTU from http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/ But what do I need to do to get exactly the preferred desktop design?20:36
Unit193Looks to me like you just have to change the panel layout, no?  Right click panel > Panel > Preferences  or it's in the Settings Manager.20:37
xubuntu533Xubuntu is not installed yet, because I first wanted to make sure it's the right installer in order to get the preferred desktop. The status for WIFI looks to me like on ANROID phones and this is mainly why I want to get this desktop design. Also the background picture looks very beautiful; will this picture be on the system afer installing or do I need to get this picture somewhere else?20:41
Unit193You'll need to find that somewhere else.20:41
Unit193Since most people have their own images they use, the number on the iso is low.20:42
xubuntu533OK. Any idea where to find exactly that picture?20:42
Unit193I can try to help you find it.20:44
xubuntu533This would be very nice, since I've absolutely no clue how to find it.20:44
Unit193Hmm... It's not the same, but general idea is: http://www.hdwallpapers.efreez.com/wallpapers/3d-water-drop--1920x1200.jpg  That close enough?20:47
Unit193Since most of the image is covered, it is harder to find the exact one, but found several pretty close.20:48
xubuntu533Yes this picture looks pretty good. Thank you very much.20:49
Unit193Sure!20:49
xubuntu533I'll be offline now, but I think I'll have enough questions after installing xubuntu. ;-) Take care!20:50
Unit193Have a good one!20:50
Ronalds_Mhi22:28
Ronalds_Mwho uses skippy here?22:28

Ronalds_Mit works with compiz/unity22:43
Ronalds_Mand it's one feature, I would like to see in xfce22:43
Ronalds_Mhello again22:48
Ronalds_Mmaybe somebody uses compiz with xfce?22:48
Ronalds_Mcan I run it just for one feature?22:49
