fully_humanHello. I'd like to get involved with bug tacking. I'm to the point of running through this tutorial (https://developer.ubuntu.com/packaging/html/fixing-a-bug-example.html) but I'm a bit confused when I try to find a bug in launchpad to tackle. I see the bug sometimes assigned to a user even though the bug is labeled "NEW" and they date back to 2010.01:38
TheLordOfTimefully_human:  but don't expect infinitely-prompt responses in heere :p01:38
fully_humanAlright. :)01:38
penguin42fully_human: 'new' is no one has triaged it01:38
penguin42fully_human: There are zillions of bugs coming in and not enough people to do anything with them01:39
penguin42fully_human: All help appreciated!01:39
TheLordOfTimei think his question, penguin42...01:39
TheLordOfTimeis why there's a "NEW" bug with a user assigned to it already01:39
penguin42oh with an assigned?01:39
TheLordOfTimeonly reaosn i can think of is that they had initially set it as "Incomplete" and were going to handle it.01:39
fully_humanThat was part of it, mainly I was wondering when I would step on somebody's toes.01:39
TheLordOfTimeand then it was reset to new.01:39
penguin42fully_human: which bug?01:40
TheLordOfTimedamn it stop erry-ing me!01:40
TheLordOfTimepenguin42:  ^01:40
TheLordOfTime... aw heck, i broke znc's packaging again...01:41
TheLordOfTimefooey *diverts attention to his local builder*01:41
penguin42hehe01:41
fully_humanI don't have one in mind specifically: right now I'm browsing launchpad for a bug in order to get my feet wet.01:41
TheLordOfTimewe were asking what bug, because we were going to look at it.01:42
TheLordOfTimein regards to the "old but assigned" example01:42
penguin42fully_human: Maybe pick a package you know well, or problem type you've seen01:42
TheLordOfTime^ that01:42
TheLordOfTimeproblem is a lot of the bugs are highly technical... so you'd need indepth knowledge of the code or debugging for that package.01:45
TheLordOfTimecase in point: most of the php5 bugs are segvs.01:45
fully_humanEw. :P01:45
fully_humanYeah, I just discovered one bug with SeaHorse that I might tackle.01:46
TheLordOfTimelink?01:46
fully_humanI mean filestarter.01:47
fully_human*firestarter.01:47
TheLordOfTimelink?01:47
TheLordOfTime:P01:47
fully_humanTrying to find a link.01:47
TheLordOfTimejust give us the bug number if you hve it01:47
penguin42fully_human: If you give a bug number the bot will give the link - e.g. bug 101:47
ubot2Launchpad bug 1 in Ubuntu "Microsoft has a majority market share" [Critical,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/101:47
TheLordOfTimei tend to be more verbose than penguin42...01:48
TheLordOfTimeLP Bug 111388801:48
ubot2Launchpad bug 1113888 in libreoffice (Ubuntu) "package libreoffice-writer 1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: cannot copy extracted data for './usr/lib/libreoffice/program/libswlo.so' to '/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/libswlo.so.dpkg-new': unexpected end of file or stream" [Undecided,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/111388801:48
TheLordOfTime:)01:48
TheLordOfTimejust as an example :P01:48
penguin42ah I only prefix if I need to use non-lp01:48
TheLordOfTimeyeah i fell in the habit of autoprefixing01:48
TheLordOfTimeso *I* know which one i'm talking about :P01:48
fully_humanHere's a good one: bug 6667401:49
ubot2Launchpad bug 66674 in firestarter (Ubuntu) "--start-hidden not supported" [Wishlist,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/6667401:49
fully_humanIt's related to the bug I noticed in that there's no unity support.01:50
TheLordOfTimeFYI Wishlist01:51
penguin42nasty; so the gnome bug was closed as wontfix because from their eyes it's pretty dead01:51
TheLordOfTimeand that's a really old bug01:51
TheLordOfTimeand upstream marked "Won't Fix"01:52
TheLordOfTime and tbh i think Firestarter's pretty dead01:52
fully_humanOh, I just remembered a page on the ubuntu wiki of quick bugs...I forget the URL, though.01:52
fully_humanTheLordOfTime: Yeah, I saw in reviews that it's not maintained anymore...but I wanted a challenge. :)01:52
TheLordOfTimefully_human:  if upstream doesn't maintain it i think we need to Not a Bug it..01:53
TheLordOfTimehmm......01:53
TheLordOfTimeso taht's in universe...01:53
penguin42fully_human: Generally Ubuntu doen't carry patching for docs stuff - it tries to get it upstream01:53
TheLordOfTime*checks with MOTU*01:53
TheLordOfTimeagreed with penguin4201:53
TheLordOfTimemeh i'll leave motu alone :P01:54
TheLordOfTimei bother them enough.01:54
fully_humanHow about this? bug 87425901:54
ubot2Launchpad bug 874259 in shotwell (Ubuntu) "shotwell crashed with SIGSEGV in photo_import_developed_backing_photo()" [Medium,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/87425901:54
TheLordOfTimewheee segv bugs!01:54
penguin42segv's are much more fun01:56
fully_humanYup, I've programmed in C...I know.01:56
TheLordOfTimei hate em01:56
TheLordOfTimethat doesn't even look like its been upstreamed...01:57
fully_humanGood 'ol valgrind never let me down. :-)01:57
penguin42fully_human: OK, so reasonably easy to triage; you can set importance, and you can ask the user if it still happens - it's old01:57
* penguin42 loves fixing segfaults - dead easy if they're repeatable01:57
penguin42but there again I grovel through machine code for fun :-)01:57
TheLordOfTimepenguin42:  correctionL: they can ask to have importance set.  not everyone's bugcontrol like you and I01:57
penguin42true01:57
fully_humanCool, thanks.  I may have to head to eat any minute.01:58
fully_humanThank you for helping me understand this. I can't wait to help! :-)01:58
* TheLordOfTime yawns, and goes to pour himself another cup of coffee01:58
penguin42(says he sitting with a screenfull of disassembly...)01:58
TheLordOfTimelol01:58
penguin42right, time for bed02:02
