ner0xI think it's time for a new IRC client. Any suggestions? (Not using KDE or Gnome obviously)00:20
well_laid_lawnI like weechat00:23
ochosiirssi <300:25
koegsscreen + irssi00:25
ner0xI might just go back to irssi.00:25
ner0xkoegs: That was what I was thinking.00:25
koegsgot it running on my virtual-server, connect from anyhere00:26
Cheri703I'm late for the irc client conversation, but I'm using Quassel and love it :)01:52
ironhoofOk I just got done helping install xubuntu there was updates, then a graphics driver, everything was fine install inkscape vlc and it asked him to reboot which I thought was odd on reboot got a Stopping Runlevel V error03:11
ironhoofsaid [ok] but it doesnt do anything03:11
Cheri703I don't have an answer to the problem, but I installed both of those and had no errors, so it might be unique to your system?03:12
ironhoofI was reading I had him delete his .xauthority files03:12
ironhoofThe smaller one we did last night works, so it could be the drive is bad?03:13
holsteinironhoof:  i would remove the graphics driver03:14
holsteinironhoof: it will not hurt to test the driver03:15
ironhoofits an ati driver whats the terminal command?03:15
holsteindrive*.. the hard drive03:15
holstein!ati03:15
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto03:15
ironhoofokay giving it a read03:16
ironhoofokay we found out what did it we installed VLC on the working mahcine and rebooted and its doingit now too03:17
holsteinironhoof: i have VLC.. i install VLC regularly, and though, i dont maintain it, i can pretty much guarantee its not your issue03:19
holsteinironhoof: if you think it is,...03:19
holstein!tty03:19
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution03:19
ironhoofokay, reading03:20
holsteinand "sudo apt-get autoremove vlc" ...or use the recovery root console at boot03:20
ironhoofoke had him sudo apt-get remove vlc03:21
holsteinyou can try booting an older kernel03:21
ironhoofjust removing it worked...03:21
ironhoofback in a desktop03:21
holsteinremoving vlc?03:22
ironhoofyes03:22
holsteintheres nothing in vlc though... nothing to break your desktop03:22
ironhoofI dont know...03:22
holsteinwell, we dont ship it, so dont use it if its causing issues..03:22
holsteini'll see if i can replicate it.. look for a bug, and file one if not, and throw me the #03:23
ironhoofalright, holding off on that one im using the same thing and it works on my computer, xubuntu is install on a 20gig external on his machine03:23
ironhoofWe will check the error log in a min, im having him do the larger drive too.03:24
holstein"do the larger drive" ?03:24
holsteinyou mean, purge vlc in another install?03:24
ironhoofyea repeat the removal step for VLC03:24
ironhoofhe is using 2 drives one is a 10gig which is kind of cramped, so we dug out a 20 we just fixed the 10 now trying the 2003:25
ironhoofHow much space should be allocated for the root /03:39
ironhoof?03:39
=== OutOfControl is now known as benonsoftware
holsteinironhoof: i would just let the installer do it03:55
holsteinespecially if you are tight on space03:55
ironhoofYea I just asked him if he would like to but apparently the drive is IDE compater Sata, I think a larger drive might solve his problems,04:05
holsteinironhoof: typically takes me about 8 minutes to install ubuntu versions04:06
ironhoofYea it goes well but on / partition i had him enter 4400MB I know some tutorials said 15GB04:07
holsteinironhoof: i would just let the install do it04:07
holsteinironhoof: i would have it all in one partition plus swap04:07
ironhoofwill it do externall if the internal is unplugged04:08
holsteinthen, you dont have to worry about splitting that space up04:08
holsteinironhoof: "it" will do whatever you want it to04:08
holsteinbut if your friend is a beginner, i would do default.. one hard drive... easy.. stock04:08
ironhoofOk, he jsut sent me all the error logs from that drive, He is a beginner and im helping him over voice chat. I told him just let the installer do it manually this time04:10
ironhoofor automated*04:10
ironhooffor compatibility should use ia32-libs?04:35
BlackNekohi05:05
BlackNekoanyone know if i can install a xubuntu distro up to another older xubuntu distro not formating?05:06
holsteinBlackNeko: do you have to format the disc to blow out the existing install?05:07
holsteinno.. but you might want to.. will reinstalling remove your data? it should05:07
BlackNekodont05:08
BlackNekono05:08
holsteinBlackNeko: what you want to do, if you are asking 'how can i upgrade and keep my data' is, just backup your data, and fresh install, and put your data back05:08
holsteinOR, just follow the upgrade in the upate manager05:08
BlackNekoi have xubuntu distro that get error upgrading and i need reinstall05:08
BlackNekobut i cant format because i have a lo of movies in there xD05:09
BlackNekoi follow the upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 and get a apt-get bug05:09
holsteinwell, its ok.. this will be a great time to backup your data, since that hard drive *will* fail, and you'll need a backup plan05:09
holsteinBlackNeko: there is not apt-get bug that im aware of05:09
BlackNekothat dont let me finish the upgrade or install nothing05:09
holsteinBlackNeko: i would just stay on 12.0405:09
BlackNekois this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/101556705:10
ubottuUbuntu bug 1015567 in dpkg (Ubuntu Quantal) "upgrade failed: mixed non-coinstallable and coinstallable package instances present" [Critical,Fix released]05:10
holsteinBlackNeko: i think thats an upgrade bug05:10
BlackNekook srry05:10
holsteini always do a fresh install.. i would suggest either repairing what you got, or fresh install after backup05:11
BlackNekothat bug have no solution so i have to reinstall xubuntu05:11
holsteineither way, backing up is something you need to do if you want to keep that data. since *all* hard drives fail05:11
BlackNekobut i cant format my harddisk =(05:11
holsteinBlackNeko: you can05:11
holsteinBlackNeko: you are choosing not to, but you will when that hard drive fails05:11
holsteinand it will05:11
BlackNekono i dont i have almost 1 tera of data i cant lost!05:12
holsteinso, you might as well make a plan (which is needed) for *when* that hard drive fais05:12
holsteinfails*05:12
holsteinBlackNeko: you dont understand05:12
BlackNekoyou i know you right i have to buy another and do some backups05:12
holsteinBlackNeko: you *will* lose it05:12
BlackNekoyes*05:12
holsteinBlackNeko: that data *will* get lost. that hard driver *will* fail05:12
holsteindrive*05:12
BlackNekoyes i know you roght i have see it and see ppl crying Xd05:13
BlackNekoubt that i ask is if i can do something like delete xubuntu file and try fresh install not formating?05:14
holsteinso, you need to backup, and during that process, you can easily reinstall and recover from the backups05:14
BlackNekobut*05:14
holsteinBlackNeko: not that i know of, or would trust without backing up my data first05:14
BlackNekook05:14
BlackNeko;_;05:14
BlackNekodamn bug05:15
BlackNekohave more than 4 month and they put it like solve05:15
holsteinBlackNeko: we dont know that you have a bug05:15
BlackNekoand its dont05:15
BlackNeko=(05:15
BlackNekoi am not the only person with that bug05:16
holsteinBlackNeko: you could have a failing hard drive... you could have had an interrupted upgrade05:16
BlackNekoi show you the bug description is here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/101556705:16
ubottuUbuntu bug 1015567 in dpkg (Ubuntu Quantal) "upgrade failed: mixed non-coinstallable and coinstallable package instances present" [Critical,Fix released]05:16
holsteinBlackNeko: one *ever* upgrade or do anything like that to a system without backups05:16
holsteinBlackNeko: im just saying, you dont know that that is the cause for certain05:16
BlackNekoyes i know you rigt05:16
BlackNekoright05:16
BlackNekobut i have 1 tera and harddisk are not cheap =(05:17
holsteinBlackNeko: either way, i would take it as a learning experience, and backup.. since you will lost that data.. reinsatll, and recover05:17
holsteinBlackNeko: what is the cost of that data you are storing only in one place?05:17
BlackNekoa lot05:17
BlackNekouniversity proyect, my tesis, movies, all my picture, etc05:18
holsteinyou dont have to backup to another terabyte drive.. could be anything.. dvd's.. bluerays05:18
BlackNekois like 1 tera05:18
holsteinBlackNeko: you can think of that as retorical.. and if the answer is something like "a lot more than what a backups solution costs" then, think it over05:18
BlackNekoi dont trust bluray or dvd for bachup05:19
BlackNekoi have bad experience with dvd lost05:19
holsteinBlackNeko: right now, you are trusting nothing05:19
holsteinBlackNeko: you *will* have a bad experience when that drive fails05:19
BlackNekoright now i need a fresh install and donde have money for harddisk almost this month05:19
BlackNeko>,<05:20
BlackNekomy drive dont fail, ubuntu upgrade fail >,<05:20
BlackNekodont*05:20
holsteinBlackNeko: well, i didnt say the ubuntu upgrade didnt fail05:21
holsteinBlackNeko: what i said was, you should *never* trust *any* OS upgrade with data that is not backed up05:21
holsteinBlackNeko: i suggested dvd's so you wouldnt have to spend a bunch of money and you can get backedup05:21
BlackNekothat bug is from the ubuntu 12.10 beta 205:22
holsteinBlackNeko: 12.10 is not beta05:22
BlackNekoand they release it with that bug =(05:22
holsteinBlackNeko: you might have that bug, and you might not05:22
BlackNekois from  2012-06-2005:22
holsteinBlackNeko: they?... 12.10 beta was just that.. beta.. not final05:22
holsteinBlackNeko: betas often ship bugs.. finals do too05:22
holsteinBlackNeko: i can relate to your furstration, but all i can say is, you should backup before upgrading05:23
holsteinyou should also consider staying on the LTS releases05:23
holsteinas for what you issue is.. you can open a terminal and run "sudo apt-get update" and post the errors in pastebin05:23
BlackNekothis bug are present in ubuntu beta 2 and is still present in the final the never fix it and released the final version05:23
BlackNekook i do it05:24
BlackNekoi paste it give me 1 min05:24
holsteinBlackNeko: cool... i assure you, i cant release a fix, so lets let that go05:24
holsteinthe way i read it, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/1015567 *is* a fix05:25
ubottuUbuntu bug 1015567 in dpkg (Ubuntu Quantal) "upgrade failed: mixed non-coinstallable and coinstallable package instances present" [Critical,Fix released]05:25
holstein"In general, simply purge the packages that are have mixed non-coinstallable and coinstallable package instances present"05:25
BlackNekodont that dont fix nothing05:26
BlackNekoif you read all the post some ppl have the same problem and cant fix05:27
holsteinBlackNeko: well, i dont have the issue in front of me, but i would need you to elaborate05:27
holstein'that" and "fix nothing"... i would need more information05:27
holsteinthat = what have you tried for example05:28
BlackNekook05:28
BlackNekothe post script05:28
holsteinBlackNeko: what i need is the output of "sudo apt-get update"05:28
BlackNekoapt-get update etc05:28
BlackNekohttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1611281/05:29
BlackNekoi get Duplicate sources.list entry05:30
BlackNekodo apt-get update to correct05:30
BlackNekoagain xD05:30
holsteinBlackNeko: apt-get update doesnt correct duplicate entries05:31
holsteinBlackNeko: have you looked at your sources?05:31
holsteinBlackNeko: i would just relax a bit.. and take some time, with an open mind.. i dont thing you have that bug05:32
holsteinBlackNeko: you can also try the main ubuntu channels since this is not paricularly xubuntu related05:33
BlackNekoi have try it05:33
BlackNekothat is the bug05:33
holsteinBlackNeko: you have try what?05:33
holsteinBlackNeko: i dont think so05:33
BlackNekoand i cant get a solution but a fresh install05:33
holsteinBlackNeko: i think you can.. but you dont have to05:34
holsteinBlackNeko: anyways. good luck! and be sure you back up your data before upgrading *any* OS's in the future05:34
holsteinif you can afford to lose the data,... im not sure what i would do... leaving the hard drive powered off for a long time can be bad too05:35
holsteinall i know is 2 things for certain... reinstalling ubuntu doesnt take very long, and you will lost that data at some point when that hard drive dies... so maybe just take the time to do a proper backup solution.. its not too late05:36
holsteinBlackNeko: cheers and good evening to you :)05:36
BlackNekoi have try this perl script too https://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/2012/03/msg00045.html05:38
BlackNekoi have deleted the source list and update again05:38
BlackNekosome ppl tell to correct it manually because the problem is the missing arch in the list05:38
BlackNekook thanks05:38
holsteinfor the record, and the logs.. no one said deleting the sources file was a solution to that bug ^^05:39

MoL0ToVi'm unable to get working 2 separate desktops on my 2 display connected to my ati graphic card in xubuntu. someone can help me?15:29
nssRight there with you MoL0ToV.15:31
holsteinMoL0ToV: what are you wanting? and what do you have?... if you have mirrored desktops, and you want spanned, try using arandr to set this up15:45
holsteinnss: ^^15:45
nssI got spanned to work on XrandR but my primary won't display 2560*1440 correctly.15:46
MoL0ToVholstein, i want 2 independent desktop one rightof other15:47
MoL0ToVarandr don't work...15:47
holsteinnss: you can elaborate as to what you consider "correctly", but sometimes i just put a custom xorg.cong in place15:47
GridCubeyou using the same output? i mean its hdmi to both monitors?15:47
holsteinMoL0ToV: in what way does arandr not work?15:47
MoL0ToVtoday works after last apt.-get upgrade15:47
MoL0ToVyesterday no15:48
holsteinMoL0ToV: ?15:48
Cheri703MoL0ToV: it's not official, but if you update to xfce 4.12 you can do it...that's what I did. do note: hard/impossible to downgrade (I wasn't able to) http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/how-to-use-multiple-monitors-in-xubuntu.html15:48

MoL0ToV:D15:48
nssThe picture is just completely glitched and flickery.15:48
holsteinnss: i would try different drivers15:48
nssThe proprietary ones? I'm on AMD 7970.15:49
MoL0ToVi use oss15:49
peter__egreetings,  got a pesky ZTE MF821D 4G modem that has issues cooperating with Xubuntu 12.04, it is recognized as a wired connection15:51
holsteinnss: i typically just try the other ones.. which ever ones im not trying... but if you havent tried the proprietary ones, i would suggest trying them15:51
peter__eI've found usb_modswitch rules that are supposed to help however the ID in the suggested rules is different from the output from lsusb15:53
nssHow would a custom Xorg.conf for my setup look? Primary monitor on the left is 2560*1440 and secondary on the right 1920*1080.15:55
holsteinnss: sometimes i use a knoppix live CD, and get things setup there and take the xorg.conf.. knoppix or puppy15:55
nssWould running Knoppix in a VM generate the same Xorg.conf?15:58
holsteinnss: no15:59
holsteinnss: for you, think its going to be the driver15:59
nssWhy's that? Googling turns up lots of Xorg.conf fixes for similar setups.16:00
holsteinnss: why is what?16:00
nssWhy do you think it's the drivers?16:00
holsteinnss: why do i think your "glitchy" graphics are due to the graphics driver?.. its just a guess... and have you tried all the drivers?16:01
nssTBH no. I was assured it had to be the Xorg.conf from googling but it won't hurt to try. Thanks.16:02
holsteinnss: take your xorg.conf out of the equation... remove it, reboot and see if its glitchy.. get it not glitchy there by trying different drivers... set the resolution with a custom xorg.conf if you want/need16:03
nssThere's no Xorg.conf by default.16:04
GridCubenope16:04
holsteinpeter__e: for the record, i would try a more generic ubuntu support channel.. you might get more help there, and the help should be generic for all *buntu's for that device16:17

xubuntu398yay! my install is almost done!16:43
GridCube:D16:43
baizonnice to hear :)16:44
nssholstein: Just dropping by to say thanks. Installed the proprietary AMD drivers and everything works now. Had to update to Xfce4.12 for proper extending support though and a curious pointer bug alike that I had on Windows under the same monitor setup is back, too minor for me to care though. There does seem to be more pronounced screen tearing though, not sure what's up with that. But again, thank you.17:01
holsteinnss: enjoy.. you likely could just use a different tool to configure dual head, but upgrae xfce if you like17:02
holsteinnss: whats up with the screen tearing is likely just the driver support for your specific device.. it can be challenging...17:03
nssYeah, figures. I'll check the OSD and try lowering the refresh rate but really, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.17:04
ajonhey18:28
ajonthe power manager icon disapeared from my indicators and i cant fathom why18:29
ajonif i kill the power manager and run it with --debug it prints "TRACE[xfpm-power.c:1149] xfpm_power_refresh_adaptor_visible(): Tray icon configuration: : ((XfpmShowIcon) SHOW_ICON_ALWAYS)18:30
ajonTRACE[xfpm-power.c:1113] xfpm_power_hide_adapter_icon(): Hide adaptor icon" every now and then18:30
holsteinajon: i usually just try as a different user, to see if its something with my config, or actually a problem with an application18:35
xubuntu369i hope someone can help me....20:48
xubuntu369I just did a clean install of 12.10 and everything is working fine with one fairly major exception - regardless of the program - Firefox, terminal, even the taskbar blink and go transparent when clicked or typed in.20:50
holsteinxubuntu369: did you install a compositor?20:50
xubuntu369it also seems related that many webpages have elements that have been loaded invisible - ie: I can see everything but the one button I need to click20:51
xubuntu369i don't know what a compositor is20:51
holsteinxubuntu369: was it like this in the live session?20:52
xubuntu369didn't do a live session20:53
xubuntu369this is probably my 10th linux installation, and I've been searching the web for answers to this problem but I can't seem to find any answers20:54
holsteinwhat would i do? probably since its a fresh install, i would either just reinstall after checking the installation media and the live session, or try looking for and applying upgrades20:54
xubuntu369I've applied as many upgrades as I can find20:54
holsteinwont hurt to just apply upgrades and see if something comes in that "fixes" your issue20:54
holsteinxubuntu369: ?20:55
holsteinxubuntu369: open a terminal, or go to tty20:55
holsteinsudo apt-get update ...then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade20:55
holsteinreboot and test...20:55
holsteinif its still the same, then  you can look into an alternate grahpics driver..20:55
holstein!ati20:56
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto20:56
holsteinor, you can try ubuntu 12.0420:56
xubuntu369i don't like unity20:56
xubuntu369GPU is too old20:56
xubuntu369I'm considering lubuntu or macpup20:57
holsteinxubuntu369: ?20:57
holsteinxubuntu369: xubuntu 12.0420:57
holsteinxubuntu369: the 12.04 part being the operative change20:57
holsteinnot 12.10...20:57
xubuntu369but I really like xubuntu on the whole, if i  can get this display issue worked out20:58
holsteinxubuntu369: installing LXDE would maybe help you troubeshoot20:58
holsteinxubuntu369: its likely a graphics card support issue20:58
xubuntu369yes, I think so.20:58
xubuntu369I'm updating and reading as per your suggestion20:58
holsteinxubuntu369: install LXDE20:59
holsteinxubuntu369: or lubuntu-desktop20:59
holsteinxubuntu369: xubuntu and lubuntu *are* ubntu20:59
holsteinubuntu20:59
Kingdarohey guys, can you help me out with something?21:00
xubuntu369yes, I understand that21:00
xubuntu369I will try installing LXDE21:00
David-Axubuntu369: what graphical card/chip? have you installed proprietary drivers for it? ("additional hardware drivers") (if/if not/ try with/without)21:01
holsteini think you'll find its a graphics driver issue21:01
holstein!ask | Kingdaro21:02
ubottuKingdaro: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience21:02
xubuntu369I have a stupid GeForce2 MX/MX 400 (circa 2002) which seems to need the 96 driver which is unavailable in the repositories21:02
Kingdaroalright so, my question, or problem, rather21:02
Kingdarothere's this thing, where my theme isn't applied correctly when i log in21:02
Kingdarosometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't21:02
Kingdaroand i'm just really confused, and i only found one other person with this issue, and he hasn't found a solution21:03
Kingdaroi don't think my settings are being applied at all - my mouse feels a lot faster than it should21:05
holsteinxubuntu369: one easy test would be to try the vesa driver..21:07
holsteinKingdaro: i would just use the default theme, and test.. if all is well, then the issue is in your theme21:07
holsteinKingdaro: you can then ask the theme creator what you are supposed to do to get it working21:07
Kingdarothat's the thing, it's a default theme with a minor edit to an image, and I don't seem to be able to switch themes at all21:08
xubuntu369vesa driver, eh? I'll like into that21:08
Kingdaroif i do happen to get the correct theme on login, i will be able to switch themes - right now, i can't.21:08
holsteinxubuntu369: i would literally just take 3 minutes and set it up with the vesa driver. you'll then know that the drive *is* the issue, and you can stop hopping around so much21:09
holsteinKingdaro: you can blow out the .config in your home21:09
holsteinKingdaro: sometimes i just set up a test user that i dont care about blowing out the /home with21:09
Kingdaroalright, i'll try that. thanks21:11
xubuntu369how about that. searched for vesa in Software Center and it's already installed21:14
xubuntu369so... I also I just installed LXDE...21:15
holsteinxubuntu369: sure.. you'll need to specify the driver.. i do that with a custom xorg.conf file21:15
xubuntu369oh.21:15
holsteinxubuntu369: one easy way to test this is.. boot the live CD.. test.. then boot the live CD with "nomodeset" for the vesa driver.. test21:15
xubuntu369ok21:16
xubuntu369that makes sense21:16
holsteinwhen you say "macpup" i assume you mean a puppy distro.. the puppy live CD's have a nice gui setup wizard that will let you specify vesa21:16
xubuntu369yes, macpup is based on puppy21:17
holsteinyou can always run puppy or knoppix and get your graphics going the way you like, and grab the xorg.conf from there for ubuntu21:17
xubuntu369they say it's basically just a lot prettier21:17
holsteinxubuntu369: im just telling you what you can do with the tools to troubleshoot ubuntu...21:17
xubuntu369I really appreciate it21:18
xubuntu369I've been working on this machine for a day and half now21:18
xubuntu369I'm going to reboot and keep testing. Thank you very much, holstein21:20
xubuntu393hi there, newbie on xubuntu, I would like to speed up my boot time, I see it load 2 session : xubuntu and xfce, can I set it to load only one?22:13
David-Axubuntu393: you normally select xfce or xubuntu session before login. only one is used at any time. normally.22:19
David-Axubuntu393: how do you "see" it loads both?22:20
sandprickleHas anyone else had problems with the 12.10 32 bit live CD?22:22
xubuntu393@David A in the login panel I can choose between the two...22:23
xubuntu393however they both look the same to me (if I'm not missing something)22:23
sandprickleI actually made a live usb drive, but I can't install chromium-browser or Google Chrome22:24
holsteinsandprickle: i usually just install to the usb sticks22:25
holsteinsandprickle: a live USB is not persistent. you can make them persistent,, but i typically just do an install to the usb stick22:26
knomesandprickle, what's your problem?22:26
genii-aroundProbably no casper-cow partition22:28
David-Axubuntu393: the menu structure is different, especially "settings" and "ubuntu softw center". the sessions used to have different themes, but seems to be the same in 12.04. there can be other diffs under the scenes i dont know of.22:28
sandprickleYeah this isn't persistent and it doesn't need to be. I just want to demo some stuff for my mom. When I try to install Chromium i get an internet connection error, and google-chrome-stable is "of bad quality"22:28
GridCubesandprickle, are you using apt-get to install?22:29
sandpricklewas using software center; tried apt-get for chromium-broswer. no go.22:29
sandpricklewhoa, ok i'm getting 404s22:30
GridCubeok, do sudo apt-get update22:30
sandprickleyep, yep, it's downloading now.22:31
sandprickleshould have read the screen output :P22:31
GridCubeyep22:32
sandpricklethanks all22:32
xubuntu674Reinstalling Xubuntu....22:36
xubuntu674Sure is quiet here....22:41
holsteinxubuntu674: try the #xubuntu-offtopic22:41
xubuntu674ok22:41
whtemple1959I am having trouble viewing my grub loader at boot time I get a screen stating "out of range" this normally happens when the resolution is not set right. therefore I do not see my boot options and cannot boot into windows but must wait for the default boot into xubuntu. btew I am using xubuntu 12.04 installed from a flash drive. any suggestions?22:48
Unit193whtemple1959: You can set the res in /etc/default/grub and then sudo update-grub22:49
whtemple1959thank you Unit193. rebooting. it will work...cya soon22:55
xubuntu393@ David A I'm trying to figure it out, thanks for you help22:57
David-Axubuntu393: if its about boot or login times, we can look for other clues. look e.g. at settings>session and startup22:59
xubuntu393@ David A23:00
xubuntu393tell me more23:00
xubuntu393what should I look for23:00
Unit193Could install bootchart to look and see what's taking up time.  As you have booted into Xfce, they both look like the Xfce session, you'd have to remove (some of) ~/.config/ in order to get back to the default Xubuntu session.23:01
David-Axubuntu393: if something is started at login that you dont need. either it was "saved" when you logged out with "save session" or something was added to autostart when you installed something but you really are not using it.23:02
xubuntu393@ David Autostart: I have got all the botton checked a part from bluetooth23:03
David-Axubuntu393: I've unchecked "xfce4 tips and tricks" :)  (and some other things)23:05
xubuntu393will do23:05
xubuntu393about that...23:05
xubuntu393I installed a notepad23:05
David-Axubuntu393: if boot time is worse than login time, then look at bootchart that Unit193 mentioned above23:06
xubuntu393Notes...it is not in the autostart however it does start at log in23:06
xubuntu393(just noticed )23:07
xubuntu393log in time isn't bad at all23:07
xubuntu393will look into Unit193 suggestion, does it apply for xubuntu?23:08
David-Axubuntu393: i i r c it does, and don't see any reason why it would'n23:10
xubuntu393will try to run it and post result if I manage23:12
xubuntu393David A. , Unit193 thanks for your help. I'll have a go with bootchart23:16
Unit193Sure thing.23:17
Unit193whtemple1959: Good to go?23:28
whtemple1959thank you Unit 193 I do not understand why it did not like 620x480 but it is working with a higher resolution. us noobs must be very entertaining. again thank you23:30
Unit193Sure thing!  You can also modify how long it waits for you to select, or other options as well. :)23:31
genii-aroundwhtemple1959: 640x480 is a more usual resolution than 620x48023:31
whtemple1959thank you genii. I am off to explore xubuntu and see what other trouble I can get into. I am sure I will be back again. again thank you all.23:33
iwrhello23:58
knomehullo23:59
iwrone quick question23:59
