When I try to login the desktop pops up but then quickly sends me back to the login screen. I've installed 4 times, and now I am afraid to reboot [11:06] I've done a few things different then last time though [11:08] I installed and used smartmontools, did sudo apt-get clean, did sudo dpkg --configure -a, and did sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop. smart passed [11:09] Is there anything else I should do?, Also I noticed that at the login screen that power management said it wasn't finished, and I remember reading to try reinstalling power management [11:10] hmm, that is strange [11:12] one thing you might consider is upgrading to a newer release. Ubuntu 10.04 reaches its 'End of Life' in April [11:13] if you open the update manager you should have an option at the top to upgrade to the newer release [11:14] I have never heard of being able to log in and then ou geet loged out [11:14] you* [11:15] I know, I guess I should be trying other Ubuntu versions, I tried Ubuntu 12.04 and didn't like it. I just wanted to be able to setup and backup info. The problem I am having is one of my other hard drives has init but grub doesn't work and I tried using boot-repair but it only fixed init when I coulodn't even mount that hard drive [11:15] I guess I should use a live cd though [11:16] And use this drive live a flash drive which I have never done [11:17] r4y: only thing i vcan think of is maybe their is not enough disk space for temporary files? [11:17] not sure how much free space you have on your HD [11:17] A lot [11:17] 266 GBs [11:18] thats not it then :) [11:19] Hmm, is there a text file I should print up related to logging I should paste into pastebin? [11:19] I meant paste not print [11:20] Or grub? [11:20] you might look at /var/log/syslog [11:20] for any clues as o why this is hapenning [11:21] their is a log viewer app or you can use the terminal command: sudo cat /var/log/syslog | less [11:22] http://paste.ubuntu.com/1616041/ [11:23] r4y: I did find this thread on the forums...sems you were/are not the only one with the issue http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1576472 [11:28] It seems that that thread is of a different problem I think because I login and it logs me out. I mean it's not logging me out right now for no reason, and the only way to login when I can't seem to login is by using the failsafe graphics mode. No 3d graphics installed by the way, there was no extra driver I could install on this system. In fact this motherboard has a built in card and is an... [11:28] ...Emachines computer [11:29] Obviously though I don't know what the problem is [11:30] Perhaps it has something to with my power supply and or I need to reinstall power management [11:31] I don't remember what the package was suggested somewhere to reinstall, but I just Googled and I see a package with gnome in the name [11:33] gnome-power-manager [11:36] OK, well, I might as well see if one of the things I did make this work and if it passes my small test then I will come back and say it passed. If it doesn't pass then I will be trying out other versions of Ubuntu, like the ones Unit193 suggested to try like L, K and X versions [11:36] i dont see anything in the log [11:36] TY for trying to help me. [11:36] r4y: the bug might be fixed in a newer ubuntu version [11:37] you can upgrade to 10.10, and then 12.04 which is the new LTS [11:37] Perhaps I should try Ubuntu 10.10 then. OK, TY for the suggestion [11:37] You beat me to hitting typing and hitting enter [11:38] You should be able to upgrade through the update manaer so you do not have to do a reinstall [11:38] ]:) [11:38] I prefer doing clean installs [11:38] It's great that Ubuntu can be installed from USB [11:39] In fact I think it installs faster with USB then CD for me [11:39] keep in ming the newer versions of ubuntu do not fit on a cd so you will need a dvd or usb flash drive [11:39] ok you have done a usb install, good. [11:39] OK, I might have a DVD disc lying around, and my writer is a dvd writer [11:40] I did my first one the other day. Because I had been doing upgrades for years and wanted a clean install [11:40] I was trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 from CD the first couple of times [11:40] a seperate /home partition is udeful [11:40] usefull* [11:41] so when you do have to do a new install your personal files are saved [11:41] Well, I should try this.I also reinstalled gnome-power-manager [11:41] Couldn't I use this hard drive like a flash drive? [11:42] I mean empty otherwise [11:42] No OS [11:42] to do an install/ [11:42] ? [11:42] No, to use for backing up with no OS [11:42] sory dark here, I need a lighted keyboard :) lots of typos [11:43] I mess up when typing all the time [11:43] yeah, i think so. Just format it ext4 or... [11:44] oh my brain is failing me. Another format you can use for cross platform [11:44] I can format using disk utility but I remember getting confused about which format tab to click [11:45] Format volume or format drive and yes do so unmounted from a live cd of coarse [11:46] I think it must be volume [11:46] you could create one large EXT4 partition if you are only intending to use this with Linux. Remember, Windows will not recognise EXT* partitions. If you are intending to share between the two, use NTFS. [11:46] from forumm post [11:46] why it reads weird :) [11:47] Right, I think I will be just using Linux [11:47] cool [11:47] O, so use the other option then? [11:47] I would use ext4 [11:47] don't format volume, format the drive [11:48] if you are going to use the while HD do the drive [11:49] if you want to save some space for an os do a partition and format the volume [11:49] O [11:49] you could put a smal linux distro on it like Damn small Linux [11:49] those are fun to play with [11:49] LOL, great name [11:50] I have tiny core linux on my machine [11:51] Well, I am going to see what happens. I will come back on the usb if it doesn't pass to say if so [11:51] they are neat. Amazing what they can do with such a small install [11:52] TY so much for teaching me, you are all great [11:52] tiny core even has a litttle launcher a tthe bottom http://i1-news.softpedia-static.com/images/news2/Tiny-Core-Linux-1-3-Has-Better-Support-for-Flash-Drives-2.jpg [11:52] sorry to get off topic :) [11:52] No, that's neat [11:53] I think it is 12MB install [11:53] Wow, crazy [11:53] it is. They are fun [11:53] My install is 2.6 GBs [11:53] And that's without the packages I might want [11:53] yeah mine has reached 5 or 6 GB [11:54] but I have a ton of apps I probably do not need. I have a disease called install anything that sounds remotely neat [11:54] i wish you the best of luck friend [11:55] I feel the same way, like for instance I like to use Banshee instead of Rhythmbox and I prefer Deluge over trasmission [11:55] i have MOC installed. It is a terminal based music player [11:56] However what I found great about rhythmbox was using it to see what the bitrate was for many many audio files at one time [11:56] * evilduanedesign nods [11:56] i like amarok [11:56] I haven't tried it [11:57] I will be back [11:57] a lot of people used to stay away from it because it was a KDE (QT) app [11:57] but ubuntu has al those QT apps installed now [11:58] o/ [11:58] kpackage manager [11:58] I remember using kpackage manager to fix ZSNES [11:59] is that of cool [11:59] Yep sure is that cool [11:59] i should install that on my machine. i have an NES emulator on my phone [11:59] I did a lot of emulator testing for video games [11:59] I mean for [12:00] interesting [12:00] finding the emulators I liked [12:00] I am not a dev of coarse [12:00] i had a blast playing the original legend of zelda again [12:00] O, there is a hacked version that is insane [12:01] really, sounds neat [12:01] Legend Of Zelda Parallel Worlds [12:01] i will look for it [12:01] Yam wow was that crazy, it has a glitch related to falling into holes [12:02] I meant ya [12:02] Alright, TY I will be back [12:02] you can always join #ubuntu-beginners-team. That is where the beginners team hangs out. It is an open team full of lots of cool people FYI [12:03] ok, ill get back to my java homework :\ [12:03] I am not sure that I am worthy [12:04] Life right now however is too much for me though as well [12:04] right [12:04] real life first, ubuntu 2nd [12:04] :) [12:05] My lower back was giving me trouble but I think I found a way to fix it [12:05] ugh back trouble is no fun [12:05] I also have gone to the chiropractor [12:05] hope it gets better for you [12:06] But my dad had seen a chiropractor who suggested puting a nerf ball under the lower back [12:07] i have a co worker that has one of those super expensive ikea chairs [12:07] it helps, and heat is great, but healing is very important because of tense muscles. I think I am over it though [12:07] lumbar support [12:07] spelling [12:08] I think I can finally fight life again [12:08] sorry Aeron [12:08] Aeron office chair [12:08] like close to $1000 [12:09] No, I actually wasn't sure of my spelling with lumbar [12:09] whenever he takes days of I use it, it is really really nice [12:09] Neat [12:09] it does make a difference [12:10] It was my own fault for hurting my back when trying to get into shape [12:11] i had a problem from slouching. My ribs were actually bruising my organs/insides [12:11] Oo, ouch [12:12] I hurt my shoulder once working out [12:12] When I went to the chiropractor once he said that one of my ribs was barely hold on and that the muscle was holding it [12:12] ironic when you hurt yourself trying to get in shape :) [12:13] i guess i shouldnt :) it is not funny [12:13] issues like your back can really affect your life [12:14] YA, I know what you mean. I was in a pool with kids playing nerf football. The kind of nerf ball that soaks up water and they were pulling on my left shoulder and I was pulling the ball upward. Never again, LOL [12:14] ouch [12:15] my dad dislocated hii shoulder trying to do a 'canopener' off the diving board at 50 years old. [12:15] Yoga can help but it doesn't fix it per say [12:15] i have never tried yoga but always wanted to [12:16] I learned a bunch of ground yoga, but only what felt great from a book [12:16] I looked at several books but could not decide on one [12:16] I wasn't using the internet then. I suggest tryin youtube [12:17] oh, god idea [12:17] good* [12:17] There is a difference between the upward dog and the cobra [12:17] I don't do the cobra [12:18] but because I am not sure about it yet [12:18] i was about to say, did you find that out the hard way [12:18] No [12:18] ah [12:18] I just didn't know [12:18] I always have just the upward dog and didn' [12:19] put it together until recently [12:19] i think the you tube suggestion is a good one. Where i live not many oga options. kinda of a conservative southern town [12:20] Make sure to check out different videos on the same poses first. Also I think it helps to make a folder and gather pictures to remember poses [12:20] plus you tube is cheaper then going to a yoga studio :) [12:20] lol, ya [12:20] * evilduanedesign nods [12:20] thats a good idea [12:21] ha ha it's 420 here [12:21] I don't smoke just saying [12:21] :) [12:21] 3x4x5x7=420 [12:21] when i was in high school i had a bumper sticker on my locker that said 'its 4:19 you got a minute" [12:22] but that was then [12:22] lol [12:22] O, how the times change [12:22] Well, you know what I mean [12:22] yeah [12:23] I guess I should try this, I will be back [12:23] ok [12:23] o/ [12:23] o/ [12:30] Sorry, I got side tracked. It seems that one of the things I did must have worked, but I should try restarting a few more time to be on the safe side [12:31] There were at least 5 things I did [12:32] My test was to restart and login, then try shutting down and logging in, and both passed [12:32] I am going to make sure again [12:36] Yes, it's still working [12:37] I tried restarting twice always logging of coarse, then shutting down twice always logging in [12:37] It's works, now I can start backing up [12:38] I should make a text file of this [12:46] http://paste.ubuntu.com/1616497/ [12:47] Alright, I am out, TY for the help [12:49] I guess I could try narrowing down which one really solves the problem [12:58] I want to put this text file on my flash drive and I tried to mark it so it is not an exuctable. It has Ubuntu 10.04 for installing on it. Should there be a problem? [13:02] It keeps marking it as an executable file. Perhaps I should make a folder to make it not work?, or maybe there is no need to worry [13:05] I guess it isn't a problem. I really appreciate all the help I get in this chan. Thanks so much! [20:29] I have a /home/user directory with 1.9G total, df shows all but 49M used, and I can't figure out what is taking up all the space. Searching for files over 1024K shows nothing, and only nine files in the whole tree over 512K, and most directories with few files in them. Any thoughts on what I am missing? [20:33] You can use the 'du' command, or even easier, ncdu to find out what's taking up the space. Hopefully correct permissions are set, thus not "hiding" something in a subdir. [20:33] du -mx --maxdepth=1 /home/user | sort -n [20:35] maybe with -a as well [20:35] err, and without the typo. du -amx --max-depth=1 /home/user | sort -n [20:38] reading man for ncdu now. looks great. thanks [21:43] 961MB in .thumbnails [22:27] seems that one can set a max size for .thumbnails in the configuration editor. Yet, the setting was 512(MB?), so is clearly not working in my case. Thoughts?
