r4yArg, I am still having troubles with Ubuntu 10.04 and logging in. My tests with the first hard drive seemed to work but then I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and updated and can't login normally. I have to use failsafe08:37
r4yI think perhaps it's the graphics on this motherboard but I don't know. It doesn't have a graphics card that I put it, the graphics card is built in or something08:38
r4yI came to ask how to install packages onto a hard drive that has Ubuntu installed onto it with a live usb stick with Ubuntu on it?08:39
r4yHello09:51

moritzDhello everybody12:38
moritzDI have a short question: Where can I find some logs about incomming network conectionatempts (sorry for my english, I don´t use it in first place)12:40
moritzDI´m using a Ubuntu 10.04 and want to check the domain of someone who tried to remote conect to my desktop12:42
geirhaThat's upto each service to log12:43
geirhaIn that case it's vino. Whether it logs, or where it logs, I'm not sure.12:43
moritzDokay, thanks, I start searchin12:45
moritzDIt seems that vino doesn´t have logfiles and that I should write a schellscript to get some. But, thanks again for the quick response.12:52
evilduanedesignmaybe /var/log/syslog ?13:02

Phryqanyone here?17:54
holsteinPhryq: yes..17:54
PhryqI'm having a problem trying to run a VM in virtualbox17:58
Phryqit's a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install, and I can't find the answer on google (only old threads with answers that don't work)17:59
Phryqhere is the error I get when I try to run a VM http://pastie.org/609692117:59
holsteinPhryq: cool... just elaborate as to your issue17:59
holsteinwhat is the host, guest17:59
holstein32, 64bit?17:59
Phryq64 bit17:59
holsteinhost or guest?18:00
PhryqI'm not sure.18:00
PhryqI'm not a root user18:00
holsteinPhryq: you should install the DKMS package first18:00
Phryqmy computer only has one user account, which I'm using18:00
PhryqI have though18:00
holsteinPhryq: thats from the error message18:00
holsteinyou'll want root access18:00
PhryqI mean, in the software centre DKMS seems to be installed18:00
holsteinif you dont have it, you'll probably just want to give up, or run it live18:00
holsteinPhryq: seems?.. its reported not installed.. and if you dont have root aceess, i dont see how you could have installed it18:01
holsteinjust confirm if it is or not, and we'll go from there18:01
holstein/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup - is the command listed in the error message, assuming you have it installed18:02
Phryqwhen I search DKMS in the software centre, I get 1 result, and it has the green checkmark beside it18:02
holsteinPhryq: cool.. then run the command i pasted above, from the error message as root18:02
PhryqI ran that command and I get 'command not found'18:02
PhryqI mean it says "no such file or directory"18:03
holsteinwhat would i do? just reinstall vbox18:03
holsteinPhryq: i would purge it and reinstall it, and watch the terminal output that it gets the kernel module installed without error18:03
Phryqwhen I cd to the directory and write "vboxdrv setup" it asks me if I mean "xboxdrv"18:04
holsteinPhryq: i would reinstall18:04
Phryqby purge do you mean uninstal?18:04
holsteinPhryq: well, by purge, i mean purge.. but you can start with whatever you think will work18:05
Phryqhow do I purge?18:05
Phryqsorry to be such a nube18:05
holsteinPhryq: i would select it in the package manager you are used to and remove it in whatever way you are used to18:05
Phryqok, so I don't need to 'purge'?18:06
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1163811 talks it down18:06
holsteinPhryq: you might need to change to your specific vbox version18:06
Phryqok, should I also uninstal and reinstall DKMS?18:06
holsteinPhryq: purging is what i would do.. ultimately, i want you to try to reinstall vbox18:06
PhryqI've been reading that thread18:07
Phryqit's kindof strange, I actually got that exact same error when I ran virtualbox in Arch18:07
holsteinPhryq: cool.. then remove dkms and try reinstalling18:08
Phryqwhich was the main reason why I switched over, haha18:08
holsteinPhryq: i would expect that, since its really the same18:08
holsteinyou are using virtualbox both places18:08
holsteinPhryq: when i had that issue, i just reinstalled the verion from the repos18:08
Phryqit installs unbeliebably fast, wow18:09
Phryqok, same error after reinstalling18:10
=== jackyalcine is now known as zz_jackyalcine
holsteinPhryq: talk to me more about the system?18:29
holsteinPhryq: i literally install ubuntu, and install vbox from the repos, and it works.. what are your specific limitations?18:29
Phryqit's an HP probook 4540s18:30
holsteinPhryq: sure.. but you dont have root access? or something?18:30
Phryqthat's exactly what I did. My system is a fresh install from today18:30
holsteinif you dont have root access, you are likely not able to install that kernel module18:30
Phryqhow do I check whether I have root access?18:30
holsteinPhryq: you said you are not a root user...18:30
holsteinPhryq: im asking what that means?18:30
PhryqI mean, when I did the install, it asked me for a password, I typed it in, and then it installed18:31
holsteinPhryq: as your user, in a terminal run "sudo -s" and enter the password18:31
Phryqok, it makes me "root@username"18:32
holsteinok18:32
holsteinapt-get remove dkms18:32
PhryqI was trying to just run "su" before like in Arch18:32
Phryqdone18:32
holsteinapt-get remove virtualbox *then press the tab key*18:32
Phryq"The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:18:33
holsteinit should autocomplete the version of vbox18:33
Phryq  linux-headers-3.5.0-17"18:33
Phryqshould I uninstall that package?18:33
holsteinPhryq: you can.. there is no should18:33
holsteinits your system.. if you want to remove it, remove it18:33
holsteini usually keep an old kernel around18:33
holsteinso.. the next one? you have vbox removed? correct?18:34
Phryqafter I apt-get remove virtualbox, do I press enter and then tab?18:34
Phryqor just tab?18:34
PhryqI pressed tab after typing it and nothing happens18:35
holsteinno.. tab to autocomplete the vbox version.. then enter18:35
holsteinPhryq: press it again18:35
holsteinPhryq: you should be able to just run "sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-*"18:36
holsteinrun that... ^^18:36
holsteinPhryq: ok? its removed?18:36
Phryqoh, I had already removed it a second time. I'm reinstalling it so that I can uninstall using your method18:37
holsteinPhryq: we'll need to start over then18:38
Phryqya, so I apt-get remove dkms18:38
Phryqand then apt-get remove virtualbox(tab)18:38
holsteinok.. let me know what all is purged18:38
holsteinapt-get remove virtualbox-*18:39
Phryqit says virtualbox-qt18:39
holsteinapt-get remove virtualbox18:39
Phryqdone18:39
holsteinapt-get update18:40
holstein^^ report any error messages at the end of that18:40
PhryqI don't see any errors18:42
holsteinapt-get dist-upgrade18:42
Phryqhere are the last 3 lines "Ign http://security.ubuntu.com quantal-security/universe Translation-en_US18:42

Phryqwhich means no errors, right?18:42
holsteinlooks good... now "apt-get dist-upgrade"18:42
Phryqdone18:42
Phryqnothing to upgrade I guess18:43
holsteinok.. put this in, hit enter just once, and tell me what all is to be installed *before* installing anything18:43
holsteinapt-get install virtualbox-dkms18:43
holsteinyou can copy/paste it here if its just a few lines18:43
Phryqhttp://pastie.org/609719118:44
holsteinPhryq: looks good.. do it18:45
holsteinPhryq: dont close the terminal... there will be helpful error ouput there, if needed18:45
Phryqone error in the middle of the output "* No suitable module for running kernel found"18:46
holsteinPhryq: open a terminal, and type "virtualbox"... does it run?18:48
Phryqhere is the full output of the last operation in case it's useful, http://pastie.org/609720918:49
Phryqyes, it does18:49
Phryqshall I make a VM and see if it runs?18:49
holsteinPhryq: sure..18:49
holsteinPhryq: well.. close that one and start it from the menu and test18:49
Phryqawesome, it works!18:51
Phryqthanks so much18:51
Phryqthough I realize I was running it as root18:51
holsteinPhryq: cheers!18:51
holsteinPhryq: but that was from the menu, correct?18:52
holsteinjust as normal user?18:52
holstein!sudo18:52
ubot2sudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo18:52
holstein!gksudo18:52
ubot2If you need to run graphical applications as root, use « gksudo », as it will set up the environment more appropriately. Never just use "sudo"! (See http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to know why)18:52
holstein^^ for your reading18:52
Phryqstill works as normal user18:52
holsteinPhryq: enjoy..18:53
PhryqI will; you're the best18:53
Phryqwell, now I'll go to bed, I'll enjoy in the morning18:53
Phryqcheers18:53
odivHi. I want to install the latest version of something for which the package I can get via apt-get is a bit behind. Apparently I can install it with pip, but when I do I need to use sudo or it doesn't work. And when I use sudo then the config files it creates in my home dir are owned by root and the program will only run with sudo, otherwise it says "-bash: /usr/bin/beet: No such file or directory"19:00
holsteinodiv: pip?19:00
odivOh, and it's "beets" I'm trying to install, if that's relevant: http://beets.readthedocs.org/en/v1.1.0-beta.1/19:00
holsteindo you need the newer version?19:00
odivpip is a tool for installing and managing python packages19:01
holsteinthat version is beta19:01
odivYeah, I might have to make do with the old version, but I have a config file already written for the new version with the settings I want.19:01
odivBut yeah, if it comes to it I can probably make do with the old one.19:01
holsteinwell, do you need the new one? if not, the old one is not beta19:02
odivMaybe this is a question better suited for a pip forum.19:02
odivor FAQ19:02
holsteini mean, im sure we can sort out how to install the latest.. but if you dont need it, run the stable19:02
holsteinodiv: i would just not use pip if its not working19:02
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/beets/1.0~rc2-1/+build/4215891 assuming it has not odd dependencies19:03
holsteinor maybe thats the one you have in the repos19:03
holsteinodiv: you can always sudo -s and use pip and chown back what you need19:04
holstein!chown19:04
ubot2An explanation of what file permissions are and how they can be manipulated can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FilePermissions19:04
odivubot2: Yeah, thanks. I can take ownership of those directories and files in my home dir. I just figured it was probably indicitive of an improper install that root owned them.19:05
ubot2odiv: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)19:05
odivokay then. :)19:05
odivmissed the bot trigger :P19:05
odivI think I'll just use the stable and rewrite the config I wrote.19:05
odivLess hassle.19:06
holsteinmaybe in the long run as well, since its beta19:06
holsteini mean, unless you really need a feature in the beta19:06
odivYeah. I just figured while I was at it it would be nice to figure out what I was doing wrong with pip.19:07
holsteineh.. its probably working fine.. just gotta sort out permissions afterwards i bet19:08
