daftykins^_^00:31
redtape-renegadeI had a day dream once that they would do a kck.st/ about buying Sealand for the 30 million they originally asked for .. but that says more about my preocupation about crowdfunding and it's limits about if someone will eventually go completely cyber-punk and crowdfund with intl. bit-coins; more than anything else.00:34
redtape-renegadeI would act on that last remark. jus for the lateness..00:34
redtape-renegade**I wouldn't ... (!!)00:35

Adriannomhi.  using 12.10 with gnome-fallback.  everything is good except...  i've just added a second admin user, changed uid and gid, then tried to login.  i get a desktop, but no gnome-panel.  i can ctrl-alt-t for terminal and load gnome-panel manually.  gnome-panel loads fine on my original account.  this is a formatted drive, so there were no remnants of config files etc.  any ideas?11:25

mungbeanthat reminds me of the joke about the guy who is driving along and a cat dashes across the road11:36
Adriannomwhat a catastrophe11:37
BigRedSdon't catastrophie jokes normally involve cats winning things?11:37
mungbeanand he stops the car and sees a cat by the side of the road twitching and fitting, so he does the humane thing and clubs it over the head to put it outof its misery11:37
einonmAdriannom: out of interest, what Ids are you using? I remember something in the back of my head about them being less than, or more than 1000 is bad with ubuntu...? Anyone?11:37
Adriannomeinonm, from 1001 to 100211:38
BigRedSeinonm: user accounts are > 1000 in Debian/Ubuntu generallty11:38
Adriannomeinonm, i mean, i changed it from 100111:38
mungbeanthen a lady rushes out of the house and says, the man just got out of the car and beat my cat to death who was merrily twiching while having a dream in the sunshine and hadn't moved all day. then the other cat strolls past unharmed11:38
einonmah, that's right...swapping accounts between Fedora and Debian caused issues. Not your problem, Adriannom11:38

directhexand adduser starts at 1000 for accounts that are not added with the --system flag11:40
BigRedSyeah, lots of things assume that uid 1000 cutoff11:40
Adriannomok so i guess i'll try creating the account without changing the ids11:40
directhexsee /etc/adduser.conf11:40

Adriannom"GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.Accounts.Error.Failed: running '/usr/sbin/userdel' failed: /usr/sbin/userdel returned an error (12): userdel: user adrian is currently logged in" even though i'm not logged in11:41
Adriannomdid that last time too11:41
directhexAdriannom, recycled uid?11:41
Adriannomdirecthex, what do you mean?11:41
directhexthings can get Interesting(tm) if the same uid is used on multiple accounts11:42
dwatkinsI didn't think that was possible unless you manually edit /etc/passwd11:42
dwatkinscertainly sounds like a Bad Idea.11:43
Adriannomdirecthex, fresh install.  only other account is the original from install11:43
popeywhy are you changing the ids?11:43
Adriannomto match my files on a different hd and my nas11:44
Adriannomok, so it's nothing to do with changing ids.  12.10, gnome fallback.  if i create a new account and login to it, gnome-panel doesn't load11:45
einonmAdriannom: just create two accounts (1001 and 1002), then delete the first?11:46
Adriannomeinonm, ah, good idea11:46
Adriannomwill do, as soon as i fix gnome :P11:47
dwatkinsI use UID 1000 on all my machines at home and my NAS.11:48
dwatkinsnot that NFS's security is particularly stringent ;)11:48
Adriannomcan't really remember why i ended up as 100211:49

dwatkinsah yes18:17

MartijnVdS7.2.0-final (yes it's an "old" version of android)18:18
dwatkinsyeah, that's the highest build my HTC 'Ace' Desire HD will run, too18:18
dwatkinsI think there's a Jelly Bean for one of them, but it'll probably be a bit unstable.18:19
MartijnVdSthere's a jelly bean build for the N1, but it's not cyanogen (but some other "custom" mod), and they've had to do some magic to port drivers over18:19
MartijnVdSand you have to hack the bootloader to change flash partition sizes18:19
MartijnVdSwhich means REAL chance of bricking18:19
dwatkinsindeed, yes - I vaguely remember reading about as far as the part which mentioned it being potentially dangerous and stopping18:22
MartijnVdSI actually tried it.. but it was very unstable (Lots of spontaneous reboots)18:24
MartijnVdSso I reflashed with 7.2.0 which works fine for a back-up phone18:24
redtape-renegadedwatkins .. I'm putting it on my nook color this week, As I need a V.10 PDF reader for work and I was disappointed when I bought one off ebay and the guy said it was cyanogenmod when it was MIUI instead !18:33

Azelphurmaybe that route would be better, then :)19:51
MartijnVdScertainly a lot cheaper ;)19:52

MartijnVdSso to the ones I linked.. and you don't have to solder to make those work ;)19:55
Azelphurunfortunately my electronics skills are nonexistent :(19:55
AzelphurI can actually solder, soldering is something I'm actually reasonably comfortable with19:55
MartijnVdSAzelphur: I like my coco stuff very mcuh19:55
Azelphurthe issue isn't soldering, the issue is knowing what to solder ;)19:55
ali1234that's all you need19:55
ali1234the module only has 4 pins19:55
ali12345v, gnd, data, antenna19:55
ali1234all you need to do is determine when to turn on and off the data line19:56
Azelphuro.O19:56
Azelphurwouldn't 5v be incompatible inside a light switch19:56
ali1234no19:56
ali1234you don't build that part yourself19:57
ali1234you buy it and then build the universal controller you self19:57

Azelphurali1234: the controller for lightwave is actually really cheap (£40) the light switches are £40 a pop which is where the expensive comes in :(19:58
brobostigonMartijnVdS: that also, :)19:58
ali1234the ones i bought were £14.99 for a pack of 3 from maplins19:58

ahayzenAlanBell, looks like you unity window quicklist idea has been approved? bug 110786621:26
lubotu3bug 1107866 in unity (Ubuntu) "Show window list when right clicking an icon in launcher - enables quick window switching" [Wishlist,Fix committed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/110786621:26
ali1234someone implemented it inside unity21:26
ahayzenand the design team actually approved it :)21:27
AlanBellgosh21:28
AlanBellthe design team gave a resounding "meh" last time21:28
brobostigonkeith moon, and john and jason bonham, :)21:29
AlanBellI guess doing it in C++ made all the difference21:31
ali1234you have to admit your implementation was a bit of a hack, relying on unstable dbus apis...21:32
ali1234and also tricking unity into thinking your script was every running program21:32
AlanBelloh, no doubt this is a better implementation21:38
AlanBellhow should I know they are unstable dbus APIs?21:39
ali1234yeah that part isn't your fault21:39
AlanBellthere is no documentation, I had to just work it all out from d-feet21:39
ali1234the "tricking unity" part though...21:39
AlanBellso yeah, they could be unstable21:39
AlanBellhmm, was I tricking unity?21:39
ali1234yes.21:39
ali1234you have to register app name before you can edit menus21:39
ali1234so you have to tell unity "i am firefox" and then edit firefox menus21:40
AlanBellno, you don't21:40
ali1234you used to21:40
AlanBellno, I remember that part, I was a bit surprised to find that you can just add quicklists to any launcher icon even if it isn't "yours"21:41
ali1234yes, by registering yourself as that application21:42
ali1234# Pretend to be firefox21:43
ali1234launcher = Unity.LauncherEntry.get_for_desktop_id ("Firefox.desktop")21:43
ali1234is i believe what the example used to say21:43
AlanBellah, OK, I didn't think that was tricking it, I get the desktop files from BAMF21:44
AlanBellIt registers for bamf.RunningApplicationsDesktopFiles21:44
AlanBelland bamf gives it desktop files, and it pokes at the launcher entries for the desktop files21:44
ali1234well, the use of the word "pretend" kind of implies something.... i'm pretty sure i copy pasted that line from unity quick menu example21:45
AlanBellql = launcher[applicationpath].get_property("quicklist")21:45
AlanBellwrong bit, that is my object21:46
AlanBelllauncher[path]=Unity.LauncherEntry.get_for_desktop_file (app.DesktopFile(dbus_interface='org.ayatana.bamf.application'))21:46
ali1234last time i tried to use quicklists, deleting a menu item crashed unity21:47
AlanBellI found that to be relatively stable, it helps a lot to use a window manager that supports switching to the window that you want to switch to21:51
AlanBellgnome shell has basically the same thing on the launcher21:52
MartijnVdSthis "albums" program on BBC Four is quite good21:58
