GermainZI can't modify the screen's brightness on 12.10, on my toshiba satellite p755 laptop. I have tried doing it using shell commands (echo 1->10 to the backlight file), modifying grub as suggested on some forums, using the brightness panel item, nothing works. Fn+F6/F7 shows a popup, as if brightness is being updated, but it's not. Any suggestions?02:11
GermainZBrb, trying another edit.02:15
GermainZNope, didn't help.02:18

dydzEz2_anyone know how to remove $vt_handoff03:07
dydzEz2_from grub03:07
dydzEz2_it causes me black screens for some reason03:09
dydzEz2_if i remove it while booting it works fine03:09
koegsdydzEz2_: you could remote quiet and splash from /etc/default/grub03:14

GermainZI have the toshiba acpi modules (find / | grep toshiba_acpi returns a few matches), but toshset (among others) insists that "required kernel toshiba support not enabled"...03:22
GermainZalso lsmod | grep toshiba returns toshiba_acpi as well ...03:23
GermainZI'm hoping getting it to work will also (it should) fix my issue with fn keys ... and possibly the screen's backlight brightness.03:25
GermainZAny ideas?03:25
amiucheck the BIOS03:26
GermainZNothing relevant in the BIOS settings ..03:26
amiumake sure the keys are enabled and dont have any weird settings. ive come across a few laptops that have BIOS configurable options for Fn (like a Dell that by default required CTRL + FN + whatever)03:27
GermainZYeah, that's enabled, already checked it (FN keys)03:27
amiuthats all i got03:27
GermainZActually, *some* FN keys work... probably only 2 if I didn't forget anything: fn+3 and fn+403:27

Jeff_WilliamsHello i need a little bit of help03:29
dydzEz2lol honestly thanks to you koegs seems likemy xubuntu is set03:31
dydzEz2i did have a internet problem but that wasnt xubuntus fault, i had both 5ghz and 2.4ghz activated on my router, so i shut down the 5ghz03:31

GermainZJeff_Williams, you have to wait till it finishes. Wait for a bit then try again03:39
Jeff_Williamsk03:39
GermainZBTW, slight update to my problem: changing the volume does show the notification, but the volume doesn't actually change. It's always maximized. Same for brightness.03:39
GermainZOh well, I'll worry about that later. Good night, everyone :)03:41

tdlamhello all05:35
tdlamIm having an issue with my xfce panel...it no longer is at the top of the screen...it 3/4 the way down and I can't seem to make it move back05:36
moetunestdlam:  when you right click the panel a menu should popup05:37
tdlamoh it does but there's no way to adjust it back...I can make it go verticle or hrizontal...but horizontal just puts it 3/4 the way up the screen05:38
holsteintdlam: you can always remove the .config for it to "get it back"05:39
holsteintdlam: i would make a new user, to play around with the panels and elements... or try messing with the desktop from a live CD or from the guest session05:39
tdlamhmmm ok how would I find that?05:39
holsteintdlam: i would just relax, and maybe take a screenshot to help demo what you are talking about05:40
tdlamsorry I meant, where would I find the config file?05:40
holsteintdlam: in ~/.config05:41
holsteinbut,, i wouldnt worry about that... just know that you *can* get back to default05:41
holsteinwhat is happening? and what would you like to have happen?05:42
holsteinfor me, i just grab the panel, and move it around.. you can make a new one.. you should see in the right click menu lots of options.. the menu moetunes mentioned05:42
tdlamsorry I appreciate your help but I am a bit lost my friend...what is happening is that the panel which used to be at the top of the screen is now at the 3/4 way down the screen and I cant move it up back to the top.05:43
holsteintdlam: well, you havent learned how to.. you *can*05:43
holsteintdlam: what do you see when you right click on the panel as moetunes suggests?05:44
tdlambrb...I'm actually in LXDE ATM cause the panel was so annoying...will have to log out and back in...sorry brb05:44
tdlamsorry I am back now in Xubuntu...05:46
tdlamright clicking on the panel brings up menu drop down yes05:46
holsteinnothing to be sorry about.. just rightclick on the panel, and experiment with the options til you get it moved where you want it05:46
tdlamcant move it any higher...there "horizontal. vertical, and deskbar...but none let me move it higher05:48
holsteintdlam: i'll need to see a screenshot to be any more help05:48
holsteintdlam: if you can move it at all... you should be able to move it higher05:48
holsteinif not, something else is the issue05:48
tdlamok...sorry but how can I send youy a screenie?05:48
holsteinwhat would i do?05:48
holsteinmaybe just move the config files out of the way, and get the defaults back05:49
holsteini would then experiement with another user account.. or the guest account05:49
holsteintdlam: you can take a picture with a camera.. you can take a screenshot... i usually just shate with imagebin05:50
tdlamok but how do I get the screenie to you?05:50
holsteintdlam: i use imagebin05:50
tdlamok chking05:50
holsteinshate was supposed to be share.. i share with imagebin05:51
holsteinshare with dropbox... ubuntuone... whatever you like05:51
BillyZanehi05:52
BillyZanei can't get icons to work05:52
holsteinBillyZane: what icons.. whats not working?05:52
BillyZaneWhen I go in to settings manager -> appearance -> icons, then click on icons, the icons on the bottom don't change05:53
holsteinBillyZane: on the bottom of what?05:53
tdlammaybe i should just edit that config file...I dont have accounts with any of those share services05:53
holsteintdlam: i would just remove that config file, or just move it out of the way.. and login05:53
BillyZaneholstein: the second panel. the one that has all the launch icons05:53
tdlamif you could tell me what config file i need to edit that would be good05:53
holsteintdlam: you dont need an account with imagebin05:54
tdlamok chking imagebin05:54
holsteintdlam: you dont edit it... you just move it out of the way or delete it05:54
tdlamok where is that file? I dont see it05:54
holsteintdlam: its hidden.. you can use control h to show them05:54
BillyZanei'm in xbuntu, I want my launch icons to look like the first picture on http://www.xfce.org/05:55
holsteintdlam: i would navigate to ~/.config/xfce4 and look for a panel directory05:55
tdlamI have hidden files shown...ok chking05:55
BillyZaneI was told that was the faenza theme. I downloaded it, it is in my .icons folder. However, I've never been able to get any icons changing05:55
holsteinBillyZane: i would say, thats not the faenza theme05:56
BillyZaneholstein: oh, which one is it?05:56
holsteinBillyZane: i would just email them and ask what theme they are..otherwise, it'll just be trial and error05:56
holsteinBillyZane: its ont of the basic ones05:56
holsteinone*05:56
tdlami see launcher-12 and fsguard-10.rc05:56
BillyZaneholstein: I'm unable to change icons, so I can't figure out which one it is05:57
BillyZanecan anyone help me fix it?05:57
holsteintdlam: its literally /home/yourusername/.config05:57
holsteinBillyZane: its not broken05:57
holsteinBillyZane: i dont think you are choosing the proper icon set05:57
holsteinBillyZane: are you using an xfce panel there at the bottom?05:57
BillyZaneholstein: Well, What I do is click/double-click on an icon theme in the icons tab in the appearance manager. It does not cause any changes05:58
BillyZaneyes05:58
holsteinBillyZane: i would email the xfce page and see what icon set that is... its one of the basic ones though05:58
amiuive seen this05:58
BillyZanebrb05:59
holsteintdlam: http://askubuntu.com/questions/224006/resetting-xfce-panels-to-default-settings05:59
tdlamok but theres a slew of folders in .config and under xfc4/panel is launcher-12 folder and fsguard-10.rc file06:00
tdlamok my friend I will try the link you sent TY06:01
dydzEz2is there like a conky for XFCE06:04
holsteintdlam: or, just remove the panel directory06:04
dydzEz2whats the sire for XFCE for desktop apps / mods06:04
holsteintdlam: you must move it... or remove it.. the entire directory06:04
holsteindydzEz2: conky is the same in xfce06:05
tdlamok that link seemed to have done the trick...TY...now I have to configure it again but at least its back where it was TY frind06:05
tdlam*friend06:06
dydzEz2holstein wheres a good site to get nice things like conky06:06
holsteindydzEz2: not sure what you mean by "nice".. i would just search for what you are looking for06:07
holsteinas clearly as possible06:07
BillyZaneholstein: finding out what the theme is, is one thing. finding out why I can't load icons is another. I need to find out the later06:07
dydzEz2well i found about conky form like some gnome site06:07
dydzEz2gnome-look or something06:07
holsteindydzEz2: you mean, things like conky for xfce?06:07
dydzEz2yeah06:07
holsteindydzEz2: you can use conky on xfce... its the same06:07
dydzEz2so holstein using http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/CONKY-colors?content=92328 conky-colors06:10
dydzEz2would work fine on xubuntu06:10
dydzEz2i used to use this a while ago06:10
dydzEz2looks very nice06:10
holsteindydzEz2: conky is the same06:11
dydzEz2ok i get what your saying06:11
dydzEz2depending on the next answer i get what youre saying 100 percent06:12
dydzEz2will gnome build tool work fine on xubuntu and not mess up anything06:12
dydzEz2jhbuild06:12
holsteinits in the repos.. i would just install it and try it06:13
holsteinim not saying you cant break your system with it06:13
holstein!info jhbuild06:13
ubottujhbuild (source: jhbuild): flexible build script for package collections. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.5.91-1 (quantal), package size 686 kB, installed size 2857 kB06:13
holsteini havent used it.. but theres nothing about xfce that should break it, or be broken by it06:14
dydzEz2thanks for the answers06:14
holsteindydzEz2: applications pretty much work the same in xfce or gnome06:14
dydzEz2right unless if im dealing with like a gnome theme or something06:15
holsteinyou havent mentioned a gnome specific theme06:15
dydzEz2i know06:16
dydzEz2i get what youre saying now06:16
dydzEz2 i just said that as an example06:16
holsteinjhbuild should do what it does.. though, the thing it builds might only run in gnome06:16
dydzEz2gnome specific no no , general applications like conky yes yes06:16
dydzEz2yeah06:16
holsteinwell, most gnome-specific is just gtk..06:17
dydzEz2so whats unity all about, isnt it considered its like own desktop env now06:19
dydzEz2shouldnt someone come out with Gubuntu06:20
holsteindydzEz2: ubuntu is doing what it always did.. provide the most current version of gnome in the default repos06:21
holsteindydzEz2: you can check out unity in the main ubuntu live CD06:21
holsteindydzEz2: im sure there are plenty of gnome distros based on ubuntu if you search somewhere like distro watch06:21
holsteindydzEz2: enjoy!.. im sure someone in the offtopic channel would discuss gnome and/or gnome on ubuntu... im out for the evening.. cheers!06:30

xubuntu883Anyone encountered this before08:44
xubuntu883?08:44
xubuntu883From what I understand the colors are defined in the theme08:45
amiuyou can right click on the bar -> panel ->prefs08:46

Furahhi guys, run into a bit of a problem and wondering if I can get some help09:09
FurahI'm running xubuntu 12.1009:09
moetunesFurah:  what sort of problem?09:10
Furahbasically, I had some issues that I decided I'd solve by using the live CD to repair it, and now it seems to have frozen up restoring previous packages09:10
moetuneswhat's frozen up ?09:11
Furahthe CLI last spammed me with messages all saying things similar to "xubuntu ubiquity: WARNING:root:can't add xdesktop4 (E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)"09:11
moetunesapt, synaptics, the terminal or... ??09:12
moetunesk09:12
Furahbeen sitting here for 10-15 minutes not doing anything since I'd rather not do anything that could break anything09:13
moetunesso what's frozen up ?09:13
moetunesfrozen = can't do anything09:14
Furahit's not frozen up more so as I think it's sitting here waiting for a command that isn't being issued due to all these warnings not eing accounted for09:14
Furahyes, I do now realise frozen was a bad choice in words09:15
moetunesI'd hit enter09:15
moetunesprobably bring the prompt up09:15
Furahhitting enter does nothing other than go to a new line09:15
Furahwould a reboot be safe?09:17
moetunesok - open another terminal and check if apt is still running09:17
moetuneswith   ps ax | grep apt09:17
Furahmaybe I didn't explain myself properly, this is still in the install interface09:18
moetunesso no graphical environment?09:18
moetunesthere's another tty you can get to with ctrl+alt+F209:19
amiui doubt its running if you in install and its just sitting idle09:20
Jeff_Williamshmm im trying to use avconv to live stream on twitch but i keep get [x11grab @ 0x202d9c0] Couldn't parse video size.:0.0: Invalid argument im trying to follow this tut online but its not helping11:00

c2tarunHi friends, I have Xubuntu installed on my machine. I installed ati graphics driver also. Now if I install some other desktop environment like LXDE or enlightenment then do I have to install graphics driver again? (I don't think so, just want to confirm)18:01
holsteinc2tarun: no.. you arguably dont *have* to install the ati driver at all.. but you can if you want/need it18:02
holsteinwill the driver work for the other destkop environments without need of configuring/reinstalling?.. should18:02
c2tarunholstein, actually if I don't install the driver, my laptop heats up a lot.18:02
c2tarunholstein, so even if I don't feel any video problem I have to install graphics driver.18:03
holsteinc2tarun: i am saying you dont have to install it in the first place.. but since you have, you shouldnt need to do anything when installing, switching to, or jumping between desktp environments18:04
c2tarunholstein, great :) thank, can you please suggest me some desktop env apart from GNOME, KDE, XFCE and LXDE?18:04
* c2tarun right now looking into enlightenment.18:05
holsteinc2tarun: i would just search in the package manager of your choice.. i use openbox.. so does LXDE18:05
holsteina desktop environment is not quite the same as a window manager..18:05
holsteinrazor qt is a nice new-ish one.. pantheon18:05
c2tarunholstein, whats the difference?18:05
holsteinc2tarun: many things are the difference18:06
* c2tarun googling now18:06
holsteinc2tarun: what do i do? i usually just look up a live distro on distrowatch and try them18:06
=== ponbiki is now known as Guest20810
c2tarunholstein, yeah, I tried them. Mint has quite impressive performance but seems boring, since last week I tried, mint KDE, bodhi linux, crunch bang, Ubuntu, Kubuntu. Till now cruncbang and Xubuntu are the best18:07
c2tarunso now trying to install something over Xubuntu only18:07
holsteinyou tried them? you've tried razorQT? and awesome?18:07
c2tarunholstein, I tried all, razorQT is an windows manager?18:08
holsteinc2tarun: so, youve tried razorQT then? and awesome?18:08
c2tarunholstein, looking into it now, is it stable?18:09
holsteinc2tarun: they are alternatives that i am asking for clarification, if you say "i have tried them all"18:09
holsteinc2tarun: stable?... i mean, we can find a bug in unity... or gnome.. or windows18:09
holsteinc2tarun: stable can sometimes depend on what you are doing as well18:09
c2tarunyeah bugs are fine :)18:09
holsteinc2tarun: what would i do? i wouldnt assume you have tried *everything*18:09
c2tarunbut sometimes crashing system and refuging to start is kind of daunting :(18:10
holsteinc2tarun: there are *lots* of windows managers and alternatives18:10
c2tarunwhich is what happened with me in bodhi, and its lead developer jef was also not able to help18:10
holsteini have no idea what you mean by "installing something over xubuntu"18:10
c2tarunholstein, installing a new DE in xubuntu18:10
holsteinxubuntu is using XFCE... XFCE pretty much does everything.. its a destkop environment18:10
c2tarunobviously I can't try everything18:10
c2tarun:)18:11
holsteinc2tarun: you can18:11
holsteinc2tarun: you just shouldng say "i have tried everything" when you havent18:11
c2tarunholstein, yeah right :) I mean I tried few among the top in distrowatch, sorry for not clear statement18:11
holsteinc2tarun: what do i think would be consrtuctive? try a few of the different ones live18:11
holsteinc2tarun: a few among the top is *quite* different from all18:12
holsteinc2tarun: i suggest razorQT because is is different and not included by default.. the same of pantheon18:12
c2tarunholstein, yup, razorQT looks promising18:12
holsteinc2tarun: we can continue discussing non XFCE related desktops in the offtopic channel :)18:12
c2tarunholstein, :) BTW what do you use on Xubuntu, just plain XFCE or any other DE as well?18:13
holsteinc2tarun: i use ubuntustudio on my production machine.. and im active in the ubuntustudio team.. we use XFCE18:14
holsteinc2tarun: i run/test a little bit of everything18:14
c2tarunohh... thats nice :)18:14

c2tarunI found this pretty decent article for window manager vs desktop environment. Just wanted to share in case anyone wants : http://www.ghacks.net/2008/12/09/get-to-know-linux-desktop-environment-vs-window-manager/18:23
holsteinc2tarun: cool.. i would share that in the offtopic channel.. since the topic of this channel *is* xfce, and the support of xubuntu18:24

melodieI would like to know if in the live there is a desktop folder having for name "Desktop" or is it named "Bureau" ?18:55
melodieUnit193, you are fast thinker, but you thought not what I was going do ask, did you ?18:56
Unit193Ummm... What?  I don't quite get that...18:57
Unit193I could only guess that it's called "Desktop", but no idea.18:57
melodieI'll do a deeper reserch and test if necessary, thanks.18:58
melodieI try to make custom versions, for now in lubuntu and I would like to do the same with xubuntu, then I wonder how to make some icons I put on the desktop follow after install, whatever language will be used18:59
melodieit's a delicate matter, because there is a home made script in the casper directory for that, but the icons are created only in the live and don't follow after install.19:00
MalinussIf a notebook is rated to work with ubuntu, can I expect it to work with no problems, out of the installation with xbunutu too? I mean, with drivers and stuff?19:22
Unit193The core (drivers, X, etc) are the same, so it should work just fine with Xubuntu.19:23
Malinussyeah, the only difference is the DE, and the extra software that comes with it, am I right?19:23
Unit193Pretty much, config, default applications and DE.19:24
Unit193Same repos, and still has the "Additional Drivers" program.19:24
Malinussthought so, haven't really used linux the last 8-10 years, and was a kid back then. So kinda taking my time to get into it19:26
melodieMalinuss, most of the time once you will have booted to a Live (try only first option) you can see if everything works well19:29
Malinussah, i'll try that19:30
melodiein ubuntu nowadays to access the 4 entry options you will have to press the space bar of the keyboard at the first image : when you see just plain color with two small images in the middle down of the screen19:30
Malinussbut xubuntu, seems like the middlething between the full-blown ubuntu, and the more sparse lubuntu, right?19:30
Unit193It is midweight, correct.  More of a classic DE as well.19:31
melodieyes, it is a really good choice when you have 1 GB minimum (they say 512 but I always feel being larger is better)19:31
melodieless than that I would always advice Lubuntu, or even lighter if possible19:32
Unit193Correct, I wouldn't install Xubuntu on something with less than 1G, though the desktop itself doesn't take all that much.19:32
Malinussyeah I'm using the acer spire one d255 with 1GB ram, and dual core 1.66ghz... So I'm kinda between xubuntu and lubuntu. I just don't really like the looks of lubuntu...19:35
Unit193Malinuss: I'm using it with 1G on one of the computers, you can fix up a couple things to make it work better of course.19:36
Malinusssuch as?19:36
Malinussshit. brb19:37
Unit193Disable any services/startup applications you don't need, a couple of things I do with Firefox, and Xombrero as a secondary... Ah.19:37
Unit193<Unit193> Disable any services/startup applications you don't need, a couple of things I do with Firefox, and Xombrero as a secondary ...browser.  I personally use an optimized kernel, but not going to officially recommend that.19:52
Malinussah, okay thanks19:54
MalinussUnit193, what would a "optimzed kernal" be? At least give me some keywords to google20:20
Taylr0xGood evening all.20:20
melodiesame Taylr0x20:20
Taylr0xFirst time ever using Xubuntu and I must say I love this desktop environment!20:21
Unit193Malinuss: I can't recommend it, and it's not supported here, but on one computer I compile it, on another I use stock, and on the last I use Liquorix (and even have a mirror of their repo on my server)20:21
melodieI also think it's quite neat20:21
Taylr0xDon't suppose you know how I stop xchat joining the Debian channel automatically do you?20:30
Unit193Remove it from your "favorites", or something like that at least.  (Never used it.)20:33
Taylr0xBeen through every option I can find and I cant seem to find that sort of feature. No auto start or 'connect upon start' that I can find.20:34
Taylr0xHow odd.20:34
MalinussTaylr0x, xchat->networklist->whatever server #debian is on->edit->remove from fav20:34
laiteI have explicit "Debian Servers" in server list @ xchat20:34
melodieTaylr0x, not that difficult wait a sec I look20:34
laiteshould be there20:34
yeikSo, I am having a weird issue. each time I connect via ssh to one of my linux boxes, if it is a new session from that device, it rejects the ssh private key and asks me for a password. the next session works without a password20:35
melodieTaylr0x, Xchat menus > List of networks20:35
yeikthis isn't due to encrypted folders because my account is logged into and i keep screen sessions open at all times. it has only started happening a few weeks ago. any thoughts?20:35
melodiethen in this one windows right down left tick or untick "list of networks at start"20:35
Taylr0xMalinuss, melodie many thanks!20:36
melodieis that what you were looking for ?20:36
Taylr0xSeems to be the one.20:36

Malinusslaite, and "not generally" :) ?20:40
laitewell, if you've installed program from there you can (and should) also 'uninstall' it there20:41

ubottuA general introduction to the ways software can be installed, removed and managed in Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftwareManagement - See also !Packages, !Equivalents20:41
yeikMalinuss: i think what is trying to be said, if you install it through a normal package, it should install itself through the software manager. however some packages or ones that you download the source code and compile yourself will not be in the software manager.20:42
Malinussokay, thanks I think I get it20:43
yeikok. so i ran sshd in -d mode, on a different port, and attempted a connection it said it could not open the authorized keys '~/.ssh/authorized_keys' : no such file or directory20:59
SonikkuAmericayeik: I assume you have OpenSSH installed already?20:59
yeikyes21:00
SonikkuAmericaDid you check to see whether that directory exists?21:00
SonikkuAmerica(I'm not sure how it's done in Thunar?21:00
SonikkuAmericaBut you can use an option in [ ls ]21:01
SonikkuAmerica*that was a ), not a ?21:01
yeikSonikkuAmerica, it exists. it is where I have all of my authorized keys. this issue only happens on the first connection from a different client computer21:01
SonikkuAmericaIs that client your target? If so, it also needs the authorized_keys file.21:02
Malinussokay, antother question. When installing xubuntu, on a pc where windows 7 is already installed, is it possible, to simply make a partition out of some of the free memory that windows is on, and install xubuntu there?21:02
yeikMalinuss, I believe xubuntu cd's and ubuntu cd's allow a side by side install if you run it from inside windows without partitioning off the free space. that should be the easiest option21:03
SonikkuAmericayeik: It's called Wubi and it's deprecated as of 12.10 for Xubuntu.21:03
yeikahh.21:03
Malinussso it's impossible to partition a disk on which there is something already, without deleting that data?21:04
yeikthe next option is to use the disk manager, or a partition software to shrink the windows partition and then you can install xubuntu on that partition21:04
Unit193No, but it's always recommended to back that data up.21:04
Malinussokay, anyone knows a good partition manager for windows?21:05
SonikkuAmericayeik: You can use a trick to force Wubi to install Xubuntu 12.10+, but it's NOT recommended.21:05
SonikkuAmericaMalinuss: There is one: Press Windows + R and type "diskmgmt.msc" and press ENTER.21:05
Unit193Malinuss: If you boot the live CD, you can use gparted or let Ubiquity do it.21:05
recon_lapMalinuss: make a gparted live cd21:05
yeikdisk manager should work in windows 7. if not there is easus, paragon hard disk manager, and many others.21:06
Malinusswhat if I install from usb, is that the same thing? So the installer can do it?21:06
yeikMalinuss, I suggest you use diskmgmt first, as suggested by SonikkuAmerica, there will be less chance of destroying data using the built in partition manager than by using gparted.21:07
Malinussokay, I'll do that, thank you for the help21:07
SonikkuAmericaESPECIALLY if you have/want to shrink your NTFS partition (where Windows is).21:07
* yeik nods21:07
Malinussthanks again guys21:08
yeikso SonikkuAmerica, is it just Xubuntu 12.10+ or is it ubuntu 12.10+ as well?21:08
SonikkuAmericaJust Xubuntu. But Ubuntu Studio (which uses Xfce desktop) will be available in Wubi 13.0421:09
yeikthat is interesting. I'll make sure to keep note of that. I don't often come here and help people out, but its a good bit to know.21:10
KatbuntuHi21:13
SonikkuAmericaYo!21:14
yeikuh oh, here we go21:15
SonikkuAmericaAfterthought: Mythbuntu will also work with Wubi (as it currently does)21:17
SonikkuAmericawhich also uses Xfce21:17
yeikNow that is strange. I never really used it. think I tried it once to see what it would do.21:18
SonikkuAmericaMythTV is a DVR. Mythbuntu works alongside it.21:20
yeiknot Mythtv/Mythubuntu. i was speaking more on Wubi.21:22
yeikI would like to get Mythtv/Mythbuntu set up but don't have a card to record videos :(21:22
Taylr0xIs there a Xubuntu off topic channel or is this it?21:24
SonikkuAmerica#xubuntu-offtopic21:24
Taylr0xMany thanks SonikkuAmerica21:25
Taylr0xIs there any way to get the rubbish bin shortcut onto the panel at the bottom of the desktop?21:26
SonikkuAmericaTaylr0x: It's not there already?21:26
Taylr0xIgnore me. Found it. Asked the question before I'd actually looked (as I'm sure most beginners do stupidly).21:27
Taylr0xSonikkuAmerica, no it wasn't. It was only on my desktop as a shortcut. Not on my panel.21:27
Taylr0xSlowly but surely learning my way around this =)21:27
SonikkuAmericaOK, you add it the same way you add other Xfce panel items.21:27
Taylr0xFirst time I've used Xfce you see.21:27
SonikkuAmericaRight click the Panel > Panel... > Add Items21:28
SonikkuAmerica*Add New Items21:28
yeikI don't like the way XFCE has been doing the default layout lately. I always move the bottom bar to the left, add another bar for my tasks, and make the top bar my menu bar.21:28
Taylr0xyeik, it does take some getting used to doesn't it.21:29
SonikkuAmericaI've been debating whether or not to install GNOME (at least Panel) in Studio21:29
SonikkuAmericaOh, what the heck...21:29
Taylr0xhehe =)21:30
Taylr0xQuick question for you. How do you create shortcuts on the panels for things such as 'file system', which I already have on my desktop but not my panel.21:30
Taylr0xAnd I take it I can't remove the bin, file system and home icons that are on there by default?21:32
recon_lapno, wet windy and cold :)21:33
g16Panel > Add Items > An item is called folder menu or something like that21:34
g16You can remove the icons from the desktop via the desktop settings, accessible via the settings manager21:34
yeikTaylr0x, beautiful thing is, i can change it any time and any way I want! so it doesn't bother me except with fresh installs.21:34
Taylr0xBrilliant thank you g16.21:38
Taylr0xSonikkuAmerica, installed Gnome?21:41
SonikkuAmericaYeah.21:41
SonikkuAmericaGoing back. Can't take Xfce any longer.21:41

Taylr0xWhat are the commands to update again?21:53
Malinusssudo apt-get update/upgrade and dis-udpdate, I think ;D21:56
toraxdepends on what you want to update21:57
Malinussyeik, I tried using diskmgmt, I have a hdd with 172gb free space (220gb total), I can only shrink it by 12gb! Is there anything I can do to be abel to shrink it more, in order to be abel to install xubuntu?22:06
yeikMalinuss, I would suggest seeing if your hard drive needs a defrag. if it tells you that you have 172 gb free and it isn't letting you shrink it past 12gb there must be files located near the end of the partition or  something else going on with it.22:08
Malinussyeah I tried defragmenting it, didn't seems to help, also it would suprise me, because in windows 7 defragments hdd's automatically once a week, so it shouldn't really be a problem...22:09
recon_lapMalinuss: you sure you did not mis-read the setting when trying to shrink ?22:11
Malinussrecon_lap, yep, just shrinked it by the 12gb. now I have 12GB free, and 4gb allocated, and the ~200gb windows partition. Any way to add the 12gb free and the 4gb allocated to eachother?22:14
recon_lapMalinuss: what are you using to shrink the drive?22:18
MalinussI try to defragment it again, and hope for the best (trying to shrink it again, and it told me I could shrink it by 0 mb).... I'm using the windows tool recon_lap22:18
Malinussrecon_lap, I want to shrink it, so I can install xubuntu22:19
yeikMalinuss, so if you open my computer the c: drive says 172 gb free?22:19
Malinussyes22:19
Malinusswell now 12gb less22:19
recon_lapMalinuss: I'd suggest you get a live cd or usb with gparted and use that. and I think the installer will do it automatically. but back up data22:19
yeikand in disk management, it says like 80% free?22:20
Malinussyeik, yes22:20
yeikrecon_lap, i suggested using disk management because it will have less chance to corrupt data while shrinking partitions22:20
Malinussand yeah I already backed up everything important22:21
yeikMalinuss, go ahead and boot up the usb and try an install22:22
recon_lapyeik: I like gparted(it works) and dislike MS software.22:22
Malinussyeik, so I shouldn't make a partition out of the free space first?22:23
Malinussyeik, also yeah I do that, I just run defrag one more time, just to be sure22:23
recon_lapMalinuss: the xubuntu installer give you access to a partition manager22:23
MalinussI see. I'll try that22:24
yeikrecon_lap, last time i booted gparted live cd, it didn't recognize the drive partitioning of a windows server. had to use a windows box to work on the partition.22:25
