[00:04] schweet. I was having issues with that yesterday, it broke cinnamon-settings [00:04] Also, can anyone help me debug this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1120938 [00:04] Ubuntu bug 1120938 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "Ubiquity hangs after the initial summary screen" [Undecided,New] [00:08] nothing in the log looks particularly evil; some -ve height widgets that don't look sane; and some moans over '10 partman-target/arch_help/unknown/generic doesn't exist' [00:09] penguin42: any other way to tell what it's doing while it's chillaxing without gdb or something more hands on? [00:10] magn3ts: I don't know much about the innards of ubiquity to answer that I'm afraid [00:10] penguin42: alright, well, I'll take a screwdriver to it tonight and report on the bug, thanks for looking [03:23] hi, on a fresh install my system is using gallium llvmpipe instead of the intel driver for sandybridge. unity alone eats up a good 40% of my cpu. Is there any way to fix this? [03:25] ad5300, what is the output of glxinfo? [03:25] let me pastebin that for you [03:25] you'll have to install mesa-utils if you haven't [03:26] http://pastebin.com/HpyLUWM4 [03:27] what the bleep [03:27] have you got an /etc/X11/xorg.conf? [03:28] I've been using Ubuntu since Edgy, and I decided to wipe my perfectly working quantal install (backing up /home) to try out raring from a fresh install. It turns out that raring is not working well on my IdeaPad Y570. [03:28] ~$ cat /etx/X11/xorg.conf cat: /etx/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory [03:28] is this hybrid graphics or something? [03:28] umm... no. [03:29] well, you could look at two logs [03:29] dmesg [03:29] It's an optimus laptop, but it (should) use that Intel by default like it did in Quantal [03:29] so it is hybrid [03:29] optimus is nvidia [03:29] check /var/log/Xorg.0.log [03:30] Yes, and it also has a Sandy Bridge on-board graphics chip [03:30] that will tell you what's being loaded and possibly why [03:30] can you turn the nvidia chip off in the bios? [03:31] I don't think that is possible. The BIOS on this thing is incredibly crippled :/ basically just time and date [03:31] ok, pastebin those logs [03:32] http://pastebin.com/YuXw6q4U [03:33] This is a 100% fresh install from the 2/10/13 daily build. I didn't even restore /home from my external yet. [03:33] new partition and everything [03:39] you're booting a recovery/nomodeset kernel [03:39] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-5-generic root=UUID=eefaa976-7341-4b2b-98b3-50680ecd14e2 ro recovery nomodeset [03:39] boot the normal kernel [03:41] That's odd, I don't remember selecting that option. How do you change that boot line? I don't suppose you can just edit grub.conf anymore... [03:41] if that's how you got this far, you'll have to get a log from an older boot [03:42] I'll try a reboot... [03:44] hold shift [03:44] after the bios screen hold shift until you see the grub screen [03:47] Rebooting without recovery lead me to a "your system is running in low graphics mode" screen [03:47] I am typing this from my desktop [03:48] After choosing to remain in low graphics for one session, it failed to boot into a graphical environment. [03:49] ok, well we need the boot logs [03:49] the output of dmesg...? [03:50] and the xorg.0.log [03:52] let's see what I can do for you without a working desktop environment. I guess I could install ssh on the laptop and pull the files off of it [03:55] http://pastebin.com/XLup2Ara [03:55] http://pastebin.com/V3UutatW [03:55] tedious but it works :/ [03:57] I just installed the openssh-server package and used cat + copy and paste to get those logs [04:04] that being an optimus setup you might need a xorg.conf. did you have one before the wipe/reload? [04:13] ad5300_, try adding a basic xorg.conf that tells it to use intel as the driver. you can find lots of examples using google [04:18] also, it would be better to go to #ubuntu-x, although they're all sleeping right now. might be better to wait 6-8 hours [04:22] bjsnider: I used the default configuration in quantal, which worked perfectly [04:23] I used optirun/primusrun to utilize the gtx 550 on it [04:24] Might as well go back to quantal. At least that worked. I was really hoping to play with raring on a 'bare metal' installation [04:29] That's odd, I managed to get it to boot into a graphical environment, and Mesa is reporting it's OpenGL 3.0 using SandyBridge, but it's not loading unity. I was able to get a terminal using the keyboard shortcut. [04:30] I know it's an alpha/dev releast, but it really bothers me when I can't figure out how to fix simple stuff like this, I feel that I should be able to [04:37] that glxinfo report sounds correct [04:38] ad5300_, you can check .xsession-errors for possible explanations of the unity issue [07:38] hi i have a special problem... [07:39] it is hard to describe, but maybe its a known problem, and easy to solve. [07:41] i have a htpc with server mini installation, an xbmc and an lxde on it. if i connect to the pc with ssh sometimes it "hangs" so i have to wait 1-100sec to see whats happenning on putty or on the vnc remote desktop [07:41] if i have network activity it happens often. [07:42] i dont think its a timeout issue, cause i already tried to ping everything from everywhere constatnly [07:43] if i restart putty / vnc the hang dissappears immediately. but if i dont restart the apps, i have to wait. and its annoying. the pc answers to ping meanwhile the hang [07:45] if i restart the sshd on the htpc the hang is also gone. === yofel_ is now known as yofel [11:57] any guess on how far from 13.04 being released? [11:58] year 13 month 04 ... [12:03] How can I toggle the the launcher in current 13.04? [12:03] Do I need to reroute power to the shields? [12:09] setre: you can try rerouting power from the shields, but make sure your engineering deck is prepared to handle the pressure if you're within range of enemy blasters [12:10] setre: seriously though - you can find launcher options in the "appearance" menu - just type appearance in the dash and switch to that application's "behavior" tab. [12:11] Tribaal: I fucking told Scotty to do it last week but he was busy with Romulan ale [12:11] Tribaal: hmm thanks. [12:11] setre: what a slacker! [12:11] setre: hehe np [12:13] now to find my localized version [12:15] Tribaal: if it's supposed to be in system preferences, that currently only shows "background" as an option to configure [12:15] on my version [12:15] setre: there should be a "behavior" tab in there [12:16] setre: are you sure you're on 13.04? [12:17] that's what it says [12:17] perhaps it's the translation that isn't done [12:19] perhaps [12:19] is there perchance a non-ui way to edit unity config? [12:19] setre: so if you run "gnome-control-center unity-appearance" that does not have a "behavior" tab? [12:21] Tribaal: that opened something that is totally not accessible via system preferences. Yeah I can configure it from there. Thanks [12:21] Is it possible to set a keyboard shortcut for showing/hiding the launcher? [12:21] setre: it's the "Appearance" application [12:22] setre: I don't know - but hitting "super" will work (although it will open the dash too) [12:22] "appearance" (or my local equivalent) is not available from system settings [12:22] setre: hum [12:22] hmm "super"? [12:23] setre: "windows" [12:23] ah [12:23] that disgraceful button [12:24] setre: I suggest putting a Ubuntu sticker on it instead [12:25] yeah, or a GNU [12:25] what's up with the Amazon promotion stuff anyway. Offputting I found it to be honest. [12:27] auto hiding does not actually seem to be working, at least not without a restart [12:28] also, I found that unity crashes if I restart the network service. That can't be right, right. [13:25] Hi all === SwedMike is now known as SwedeMike === wNz is now known as leaves === leaves is now known as wNz === dniMretsaM_away is now known as dniMretsaM [18:09] how can i get further with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1116587 ? [18:09] Ubuntu bug 1116587 in xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) "Lenovo T400: With external monitor the system is rarely working for more than 10 minutes" [Undecided,Confirmed] [18:09] it is a regression from 12.10 [18:13] * penguin42 looks [18:14] fm: When it hangs will it let you do a ctrl-alt-f1 to get a console? [18:15] penguin42, yes [18:15] the mouse usually even adapts to the background. i.e. i get a hand on links. even though i cannot click anything. [18:15] fm: Hmm, so you say nothing in /var/log/xorg.0.log, anything in dmesg? [18:15] and i can move the mouse without a problem [18:16] dmesg empty as well penguin42 [18:16] happens with the guest account and my private one [18:16] hmph [18:16] you might try asking in #ubuntu-x - it would be easier if something actually decided to crash! [18:18] penguin42, yeah no crash === jimerickson is now known as Guest93373 === TheDrums_ is now known as TheDrums === jbicha_ is now known as jbicha [23:05] Oh my god, every version of Ubuntu seems to give me less options to configure things :( [23:07] system-config-printer works perfect, but no, there is some automatic thing added in gnome control panel, that does NOTHING :( [23:07] *sad*
