XSevenXhello14:36
XSevenXI just installed Ubuntu yesterday, and struggled to understand anything about what I was doing14:38
XSevenXI've finally gotten upgraded to 12.04, and now I don't have any clue what I'm doing14:38
XSevenXI have never used a Linux/Unix based system, and I don't understand using all the commands in the terminal14:39
XSevenXIt seems as though every time I think I'm getting somewhere, I just figure out that I need to do 20 or 30 more things in order to get to where I need to be14:39
XSevenXI've tried using application repositories (?), and going through the software center, attempting to install different applications, and I don't even know how to install Ubuntu onto my hard drive.14:40
XSevenXI purchased all of the parts to build a brand new system about a week ago, and didn't have $150+ to buy Windows, and I refused to use Vista ever again14:41
XSevenXso I planned to use Ubuntu 12.04, had burned it to a DVD-RW, but then later found out that my DVD-RW doesn't want to read the disc that I burned the OS to anymore14:42
XSevenXSo a friend gave me a copy of 9.04 on a CD, and I've upgraded from there, and placed the installation of Ubuntu on a USB flash drive14:42
XSevenXI have no clue how to do a full installation onto my HDD (because I think that may be giving me some of my issues) and this is becoming very frustrating that I can't just get to where I want to go14:42
XSevenXThe only thing I intended to use this PC for was gaming14:43
XSevenXIt became very obvious that I didn't do nearly enough research prior to this, and I had no idea that this OS would be so cumbersome, and frustrating to navigate. I mean, I have to tell it to save a place for an application to be downloaded, and then manually execute the download from the selected destination, and then manually tell the system how to install the program?14:44
XSevenXthis is where I listed everything I was having problems with the first time14:51
XSevenXI'm at a complete loss14:51
cortmanOK14:52
cortmanIRC takes patience14:52
cortmanSo you're unable to install from the flash drive?14:52
XSevenXI don't know how to even go about it14:52
cortmanIt has 12.04 on the flash drive?14:52
XSevenXit's running the OS from the flash drive right now14:52
XSevenXI have verified this by shutting down, and removing the USB drive- it then was unable to boot or find "GRUB" or whatever it's called14:52
XSevenXas far as I know the HDD is currently completely empty14:53
XSevenXI had previously had 9.04 fully installed on the HDD though, and then it cleared the HDD, and installed the OS onto the flash drive14:53
cortmanDon't you get a splash screen at startup that says "Install Ubuntu" or "Try Ubuntu"?14:53
XSevenXno14:53
XSevenXit boots straight into Ubuntu14:53
XSevenXI don't know anything about partitions, except that I once had to delete one when I was removing Windows 98 to install Windows XP about 12 years ago14:54
cortmanhow did you install the OS on the flash drive?14:54
XSevenXwhen I upgraded from 9.04, it asked if I wanted to upgrade it onto the HDD, or the flash drive14:54
XSevenXbut I didn't understand how it would upgrade from the HDD, if it had to clear the HDD to upgrade in the first place14:55
XSevenXbefore upgrading from 9.0414:57
cortmanDo you still have an Ubuntu 12.04 ISO image?14:57
XSevenXyes14:57
XSevenXI had wanted to do a direct upgrade to 12.0414:57
XSevenXon a clean partition14:57
XSevenXbut I didn't understand how to get my HDD ready14:57
XSevenXand I wasn't sure if it was reading my USB drive properly at the time14:57
cortmanWhat you need is *bootable* media14:58
cortmanThat means a flash drive, a dvd, a cd, one of those14:58
XSevenXI have a flash drive14:58
cortmanYour existing flash drive just has an installation on it apparently14:58
cortmanYou need to burn the ISO image to one of those14:58
XSevenXI have the 12.04 ISO14:58
XSevenXand I unpacked it onto the USB drive14:58
XSevenXbut when I tried to assign the device to boot first from BIOS14:59
XSevenXI got an error message14:59
XSevenXit would then just continue to boot to 9.0414:59
cortmanIf you don't get an option to install ubuntu anywhere, you have not created bootable media.14:59
cortmanHave you searched in the dash for "Install"?15:00
XSevenXno15:00
XSevenXthere is just a folder called Install15:01
XSevenXwhich has one file called mt86plus inside of it15:01
cortmanAnd you have no working system on the computer HDD itself?15:02
XSevenXI assume that I don't15:02
XSevenXI don't even know how to check if I would or not15:03
cortmanpull out all removable media and boot up the computer?15:03
XSevenXthat's what I tried before and it wouldn't boot up15:03
XSevenXI'll brb15:03
XSevenXThere is no bootable media on the HDD15:06
XSevenXwithout the USB drive it cannot boot at all15:06
cortmanNo, you mean there is no installed system on the HDD15:06
cortmanDo you have another flash drive?15:07
XSevenXno15:07
cortmanA CD-R?15:08
XSevenXno15:08
* cortman sighs15:08
XSevenXI am likely just going to delete everything off of the flash drive, and then put a fresh 12.04 installation on it and go from there15:09
XSevenXbut if that doesn't fix all the errors I'm having, then I'm still at a loss15:10
cortmanhow are you going to do that if you have no system on the computer? Do you have a second computer?15:10
XSevenXI have four computers15:10
cortmanRunning windows?15:10
XSevenXyes15:10
XSevenXWindows 7, and XP15:10
cortmanoh15:10
cortmanit becomes easy then15:10
XSevenXI wasn't about to pay $150 for another license, and XP 64-bit is over $200..15:11
cortmanhere's what you need to do15:11
cortmanDownload Linux Live USB Creator- http://www.linuxliveusb.com/15:11
cortmanIt's a fantastic piece of software15:11
cortmanuse it to burn the ISO image to the flash drive15:11
cortmanThat will create a bootable flash drive15:11
XSevenXOkay, because what I was trying obviously wasn't working15:12
cortmanFrom which installing Ubuntu will be simply clicking the button that says "Install Ubuntu"15:12
XSevenXI tried to make a bootable flash drive in the same way you'd make a bootable CD/DVD15:12
cortmanYes15:12
XSevenXmy next problem is with applications15:12
cortmanYeah that won't work. Use LiLi.15:12
XSevenXI think if I can get past that I'll know what I'm doing from there15:12
cortmanapplications?15:13
XSevenXI tried to go to the Adobe website and download (and install) Flash player updates15:13
XSevenXwell that didn't work15:13
XSevenXit asks me what application to use to open it15:13
cortmanNo it won't15:13
XSevenXso I followed the wiki instructions regarding.. that15:13
XSevenXI went to the software center15:13
XSevenXI went into edit -> software sources15:13
cortmansudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer15:13
XSevenXyeah and I tried using the terminal commmands like that15:14
XSevenXand it gives me an error message15:14
XSevenXthat it doesn't exist15:14
cortmanneed to run sudo apt-get update first15:14
XSevenXokay I guess it updated it now15:16
cortmanWell you probably want to do that when you get the system installed if you're just going to wipe the flash drive anyway.15:17
XSevenXI just want to get a better grasp on how to install and use applications before I do anything15:17
cortmanOk sure15:18
XSevenXI've already spent 15 hours+ trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing15:18
XSevenXand the only thing I plan to use this PC for is Steam games, and League of Legends15:18
cortmanno experience with steam15:18
cortmannot a gamer15:18
cortmanbut I've heard that can be a hairball too. Read up on it15:18
XSevenXI tried to go through and install winelol and couldn't figure that out, and Wine keeps giving me error messages when I try to install it from the Software Center15:18
XSevenXI guess I thought Ubuntu would be a low-resource OS like XP, and I could get the most out of my system with it15:19
XSevenXI knew before hand that Linux had compatibility issues with Windows/.exe games15:19
XSevenXI just didn't understand it would be this bad15:20
cortmanUbuntu isn't low-resource any more15:20
cortmanLubuntu and Xubuntu are15:20
cortmanor Bodhilinux15:20
XSevenXhmm15:20
cortman(which is Ubuntu based_15:20
cortman)15:20
XSevenXthat's another thing that confused me15:20
cortmanif it's an old computer I would NOT recommend putting straight ubuntu on it15:20
cortmanI would use Lubuntu 12.1015:20
XSevenXwhile just looking around for answers, all I see is all of these different Linux based systems15:20
cortmanIt's really lightweight and IMO really, really good looking too15:20
XSevenXwell this is a brand new systemm15:21
cortmanYep. Welcome to Linux15:21
XSevenXIntel i7 3.6GHz quadcore15:21
XSevenXMSI Z77 motherboard15:21
XSevenX750W Rosewill power supply (and matching case)15:21
cortmanIf you have RAM to match that CPU Ubuntu should run just fine15:22
XSevenX32GB of RAm15:22
cortmanlol good grief15:22
XSevenXbut I've been trying to get this PC for years15:22
XSevenXI paid $455 for everything15:22
cortman?15:22
XSevenXbecause budget was a huge concern15:23
XSevenXafter I realized I'd have to pay so much for Windows15:23
XSevenXI just wouldn't be able to buy the parts I wanted15:23
XSevenXI make almost exactly as much as I need from work to survive15:23
XSevenXso I don't buy anything I don't need, unless i save for it for a long time15:23
cortmanSure, just understand that Linux *is not* Windows15:24
XSevenXI understand that, I just want to do some pretty simple things and it seems to be overwhelming15:24
XSevenXI also read that in order to use ...15:24
XSevenXI can't even remember what they're called15:24
XSevenXthe links you put into Software Sources to get an application15:25
XSevenXsome website said that I needed a launchpad key15:25
XSevenXand some kind of signed signature15:25
XSevenXand I had to sign a contract (?) in order to use them15:25
cortmanWhat? For what software?15:25
XSevenXfor any software that I download with launchpad15:26
XSevenXor from launchpad15:26
XSevenXI don't know wtf15:26
cortmanThat'd be news to me15:26
cortmanAFAIK you just need to add the PPA and install.15:26
XSevenXI have the PPA in for winelol, and when I tell the terminal to install, it says it doesn't exist15:27
XSevenXoh I see15:27
XSevenXafter you input PPA repositories you need to run an update in the terminal?15:27
XSevenXsudo apt-get update?15:27
cortmanRight, exaclty15:27
cortman*exactly15:27
XSevenXbecause now it's working fine15:27
cortmanapt-get update updates the software source list15:28
XSevenXI assumed that because there was no "Apply" button on the software source list, that it was automatically applied as I input the data15:28
XSevenXbecause I had noticed that in other  features of Ubuntu, this was the case15:28
XSevenXyou would think they would have this information immediately at hand when starting Ubuntu for the first time...15:29
XSevenXI don't even know where to access the help menu anymore in 12.0415:29
XSevenXand I do not like that they removed the drop-down lists that were on the taskbar in 9.0415:29
holsteini find XFCE to be most like gnome2 was, if thats what you are looking for15:30
XSevenXso the layout used in Ubuntu 9.04 was called GNOME2, and the layout/UI they have for 12.04 is...?15:31
XSevenXI knew the name of it but now I can't remember15:31
holsteinwell, to be more precise.. its a desktop envoronment15:31
XSevenXoh okay15:32
holsteinXSevenX: gnome was what ubuntu used.. and customized15:32
holsteinXSevenX: different distos using gnome2 would, and could have different implementations of gnome15:32
holsteinXSevenX: cannonical is doing what it always did in this regard.. providing the most recent verion of gnome.. its just a different version from upstream15:33
holsteinthe upstream changes didnt line up with the direction they wanted to go in, and customizing it further, or making their own were options... so they created and developed unity15:33
holsteinunity is open, and anyone else (any other distro) can have it as well...15:34
holsteinunity is what it is.. and i find it faster and more useable all the time, though, i personally dont use it on my systems15:34
holsteinin this regard, ubuntu is the same as it always has been as well.. its a release that can be customized in any way the end user chooses... you can install XFCE for example, which has a lot of the same look/feel that gnome2 did.. and it is GTK as well, and runs the same applications with similar look/feel15:36
holsteinXSevenX: one easy way to look around and test is to use the live CD's... xubuntu, lubuntu... other distros with other alternatives... etc15:36
XSevenXwell15:38
XSevenXI don't have a lot of requirements to be met, I think15:39
XSevenXI just want to be able to stream videos from sites like youtube, and hulu15:39
holsteinif you want a traditional menu. then you can have one15:39
holsteinif thats what you mean by "the drop down thing in the panel in 9.04".. the traditiona menu is gone15:39
XSevenXplay some select games (which I have found listings showing compatibility vs. Ubuntu so there won't be much problem there)15:39
holsteinxfce, and lxde both have that... XFCE is in xubuntu... LXDE lubuntu15:40
XSevenXit doesn't matter, I just preferred the menu15:40
holsteinsure.. and all i can say is, if you want one, you can have one15:40
XSevenXwell I guess I'm going to make my live USB for 12.04 now15:42
XSevenXthanks for the help15:42
cortmanno problem15:42

tomas_hi, i delete my admin account :D how to fix16:42
tomas_ctrl + alt + f1 i can login there16:42
tomas_no elseway16:43
tomas_so my real admin is dissapeared from my login screen17:00
holsteintomas_: login from the recovery console, and "fix" it17:04
tomas_i cant login recovery mode17:14
tomas_tryed shift, shift + tab,  esc17:14
holsteintomas_: you dont see a kernel list in grub?17:15
tomas_how can i see grub ?17:16
tomas_computer just start up to login screen17:16
tomas_loading ubuntu there is background and . . . . . . . .       and then next there is login screen17:16
tomas_where should be that grub ?17:16
holsteintomas_: i always unhide grub.. but if its hidden, usually tapping shift after the bios screen shows it17:17
tomas_wwwwooow17:17
tomas_i got in17:17
tomas_<317:17
tomas_what to do next ?17:17
holsteinboot the recovery environment, and get to a root shell and "fix" what you broke17:18
tomas_option "root "?17:18
holstein?17:18
tomas_from the list17:18
tomas_i have resume, clean17:18
holsteintomas_: you can start reading me what exactly is in that list17:18
tomas_...17:18
holsteinotherwise, its "root" console you want17:18
holsteinyou want a terminal with root access17:18
holsteinthere are several ways to get that17:18
tomas_resume, clean, dgkp, failsafeX, fsck, grub , network, root, system-summary17:19
holsteinso, from that list17:19
holsteinroot, most fist the term 'root" i gave17:19
tomas_i take root17:19
tomas_ok now im there17:19
tomas_what should i do ?17:19
holsteini would select 'root' and see if its like the root option i am suggesting where you will have the sudo root access you removed17:19
holsteintomas_: ?17:19
holsteintomas_: fix what you broke17:19
tomas_im in root17:19
tomas_root@xxx:~#17:20
holsteinif you removed the sudo access of the user you have, then here, you have root access17:20
holsteinif the question was "i broke my admin account".. here, you have admin access and can "fix" what you broke17:20
tomas_i make new question. i deleted my admin account from "own" and there is left 2 accounts in "other" account section.17:21
tomas_cant login only with quest17:21
tomas_can*17:21
holsteinhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/70236/create-an-administrator-user-in-command-line17:22
tomas_so that was the problem, maybe i said it too difficult and unclearly17:22
tomas_but if it already exist there cos im logged it now with that name in root in recovery mode17:23
tomas_?17:23
holsteintomas_: there is no root user17:23
holsteinonly users with admin access17:23
holstein!root17:23
ubot2Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo17:23
tomas_i know that password17:23
tomas_and im logged in17:23
tomas_thats not the problem17:23
holsteinif you broke that funtionality, we can get that back here in the root console17:23
holsteintomas_: no, you are not17:23
holsteinyou are in the root console from recovery17:24
holsteinyou didnt put in any password17:24
tomas_but it asked password17:24
tomas_and i put17:24
holsteini dont hink so17:24
holsteinif it did, you are not where i suggested, nor do you have the problem i thought you had17:24
holsteini would elaborate for one of the other volunteers, and try #ubuntu17:24
holsteini must be off.. good luck!17:24
tomas_and in ubuntu where is accounts.. if i make something it asks my "real admin" password and that "real admin" name is shown only in there.. not in users list17:25

ecenHello! I recently installed Ubuntu for the first time and to do this I used the Windows Ubuntu installer for version 12.10. I did this on a somewhat old laptop to test out Ubuntu, hoping it to be faster than w7 (64-bit) which is the native OS. However, so far, it's only been way slower at about everything. As well as this, applications tend to crash and freeze alot (especially the system options app when I try to open user20:01
ecenaccount settings). So, is it possible to somehow increase performance, atleast to the same speed as win7, and is there any help for repeating app-crashes?20:01
ecenI'd be happy to contribute with more information regarding the problem too, if I know what could be of use! (I'll be on from another device for a bit)20:15
XSevenXI am pretty much ready to give up on this OS20:55
XSevenXall I want to do is play my games, and I have spent the last 3 days jumping through hoops to get this crap to even run20:55
XSevenXevery single time that I think I'm getting somewhere, I find out that I have to learn even more than I did the last time, and type out even more lines of script just to get a PROGRA TO FUNCTION20:56
XSevenXWHY DO I HAVE TO INPUT LITERALLY EVERYTHING MANUALLY INTO THIS SYSTEM FOR IT TO DO ANYTHING?20:56
XSevenXI just want to play my game, I don't want to program my fucking computer anymore.20:57
XSevenXI finally get a stable Ubuntu installation onto my HDD, and I get partitions set properly, and I figure out how to get my updates done for all my drivers, and everything seems to be finally working smoothly20:57
XSevenXI get Wine and Winetricks installed, and I go to start the installation for League of Legends through a forum post I had found with a step-by-step how to do it20:58
XSevenXwhen I find out that I have to go through a huge mass of input to get Wine to work with my 86_64x installation20:58
XSevenXI don't even know if I'm doing anything wrong, because I know so little about what I'm doing to begin with that I would not figure any of this out if there were not articles, and information available to me specifically telling me exactly what I have to do to go from A to B.21:00
XSevenXI have seen that people say this OS is "intuitive", and I have yet to see what that even means21:00
XSevenXI just don't think that intuitive = $ line entry script {{ names of things }} = ? what the hell is even going on/what/why/when/where/21:02
XSevenXin what part of someones brain do they think that a line of abstract words to input a command sequence is "intuitive"?21:02
XSevenXit's as if I've stumbled upon a project started by someone several days ago, even though this OS is supposedly "8 years old"21:03
XSevenX8 years of ridiculously assbackwards implementation that does not offer decent support for literally any commercial product?21:04
geirhaHeh, buys crappy game, blames OS.21:59
ECEN_SILVERHe might have some point though - of course I'm not the one to say anything, I just got here, to Linux.22:05
geirhaWell, if the game was written for linux in the first place, it would be point and click all the way.22:16
geirhawine could be more user friendly, sure, but there's no point in putting down hours into that now. Best get it to reliably run windows programs and games first.22:19
ECEN_SILVERYa. I wish more things were developed for Linux. Personally I don't want to stay with microsoft anymore.22:27
madsailorECEN_SILVER,  I'm sure games will get more 'nix attention now that Steam for Linux is released23:20
ECEN_SILVERYea, I really hope so!23:23
ecenHello again guys, I recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 (first time Linux) through the windows installer on this laptop of mine. Bad thing is, Ubuntu is running much slower than native win7 64-bit, and I'm getting lots of app freezes. Any ideas?23:59
