AlanBellksplice would have fixed that if oracle hadn't burried it09:00
AlanBelloh, looks like it has been kind of resurected a bit09:01
AlanBellthe website was broken for a while http://www.ksplice.com/uptrack/download-ubuntu and I kind of assume anything going into Oracle has gone forever these days09:03
BigRedSksplice will still fix it, and Oracle will probably give you a discount if you purchase within a week of the fix09:04

neuroBigRedS: :)) my point exactly09:36
mungbeanand thunderbird is fine09:36

neuromungbean: defeats the point of imap then09:36
neuromight as well just use gmail09:36

BigRedSneuro: the point of imap isn't offline caching09:37
neuroali1234: hehe09:37
mungbeanneuro: depends if you're talking always connected desktop or not09:37
BigRedSthe point of imap is to read mail on the server, rather than pop-style downloading-and-reading09:37

BigRedSSorry, poor imap implementations are a bugbear of mine. I love how nothing implements imap properly09:38
neurowhy bother using something like imap if you're not going to take advantage of offline caching09:38
ali1234with no local cache you might as well use gmail web interface because it's better than thundebird09:38
neurobut ...09:38
neurothe problem with offline caching is the ram/disk footprint09:38
BigRedSmy mum's imap client is roundcube09:38
neuroali1234: that was pretty much my point09:38
mungbeanneuro: you can search in thunderbird within folders without doing the download for indexing09:38

ali1234in fact you might as well do that anyway because offline cache is pointless09:38
neuroyeah, i know09:39
ali1234you can't send or receive emails = email is pointless anyway09:39
neurobut what i'm trying to say here, probably unsuccessfully, is why use a local client if not to cache09:39
mungbeani don't get your point09:39
neuroali beat me to it :)09:39
ali1234and don't give me that "i need to check something in my email" because how are you going to action it without internet?09:39

mungbeani use a local client cos i have loads of mail that i want to order easily by sender, filter for words in the body  ,etc09:40
mungbeando things easily that webclients don' do09:40
ali1234gmail does that MUCH better than thunderbird does09:40

redtape-renegadeI havec a rockbox .. fcuk iTunes !!11:54
neuromungbean: http://www.uvvu.com/11:54
popeyan agreement that when you buy the DVD you can use other means to get digital copy11:54
neuroit's a nice idea11:54
neuromore platform agnostic than Digital Copy11:55
popeytaken a long while to get started11:55
popeyamazed that I saw discs in the local petrol station with it on11:55
neuro:)11:55
neurowhat i can't remember is if ultraviolet does HD copies11:55
ali1234they've had that since at least 2011, cos my dad got loads of blu rays with that and he had no idea what it was11:55
neuroDigital Copy is usually SD, sadly11:55
neurowhich is annoying when you've bought the blu ray11:55
mungbeani've never watched the didigtal copy, seems to be a windows thing11:56
neuroit's an itunes thing11:56
mungbeanand DRM laden11:56
neuroi have Star Trek sitting on my mac just now11:56
neurowell yea11:56
neuro:(11:56
mungbeandon't have a platform that can run itunes11:56
neurowhich is why ultraviolet is "nicer11:57
neuro"11:57
neuroonly problem is that the capabilities appear to be studio-dependent11:58
mungbeanfor books, all they would need is a scratch off sticker with a single use code or something11:58
neuroit's up to the studio (and i think it's on a per release basis too, if they want) whether the title can be streamed and/or downloaded11:58
neuromungbean: but there's the format issue too11:58
neuropdf?11:59
neuroepub?11:59
neuromobi?11:59
neuroetc11:59
neuroepub probably makes most sense, but there's the danger that once you've bought it and gotten the epub, you can just share it about11:59
neurobut then again, itunes takes the same chance with music, soooo ...11:59
mungbeanyou can have an account where the file gets watermarked11:59
neuro(plenty of utils around to strip personal info from m4a files)11:59
mungbeanor just trust people to use the system11:59
mungbeanread the story about the tolkien boigraphy12:00
neurowhich is what apple do with itunes music: trust12:00
mungbeanor convenience12:00
mungbeanmake stuff easy to buy12:00
neurotolkein was a fanboi? ;)12:00
neurothis is what the p2p community has been saying for years12:00
neuro"make stuff easier to buy, and we'll get interested"12:00
mungbeanhttp://www.grotta.net/blog.htm?post=899042#12:01
neuroyes, there's a hard core of people who will always pirate music, video, etc12:01
mungbean"Why You Won't Be Reading a New Tolkien Biography"12:01
neurobut a lot of people do torrenting, ed2k etc for media because the "official" digital way is too hard12:01
neuroor too inconvenient12:01
mungbeancopyright expires, then gets retroactively applied, guy can now no longer quote from the material12:01
neuroor downright impossible, if you're on an "unsupported platform"12:01
neuroyeah, copyright extensions and the like are annoying12:02
neurodefeats the whole point12:02
neurocf Cliff Richard12:02
mungbeanif you own a book that was out of copyright, they can't come to your house and stampa copyright on it ?>12:03
neurowhen they EU extended copyright from 50 to 70 years a couple of years ago, one of the things they said was that it was done to protect income gaps at the end of performer's lifetimes12:03
neurowhich is nuts12:03
neuroespecially given some of the heavy hitters who pushed to get the legislation through12:03
mungbeanso why does it continue after they die12:03
mungbeanchristopher tolkien is not JRR12:04
neuro"awww, did you blow all your earnings on booze and drugs? well that's not our fault!"12:04
neurocopyright continues after someone dies to allow the estate or heirs to benefit from the works12:04
mungbeanad infitum12:04
neurowell in theory no12:04
neurobut in practice ...12:05
neurodue to the greed of labels and publishing houses ...12:05
mungbeandisney12:05
neurooh dear lord, yes12:05
neuroit's atrocious, but - and this applies to the way the music and movie industries treat piracy as well - as long as legislators are in the pockets of these people, it's going to continue12:06
neuroproblem is, for most of the public, it's just not an important enough issue to get worked up over12:06
neuropeople like us tend to be in the minority12:07
redtape-renegadeWell that's my dad of excitment over for today .. What's happening in in Tech.Land ?12:08

Azelphurmungbean: *shrug* I grew up playing games WAAAAAAY more than that, imo it was entirely a good thing12:31
mungbeanAzelphur: what age?12:31
Azelphurwithout games I would never have had the motivation to learn programming, which has given me so much12:32
popeyyeah, look how you turned out Azelphur12:32
Myrttineuro: in all seriousness: http://www.flickr.com/photos/myrtti/sets/72157632822139010/12:32

mungbeanAzelphur: there is a channel of thinking that says too much stimulating screentime can cause permanent brain changes in under 5s12:33
neuro*good* changes?12:33
Azelphurinteresting12:33
neuroi'm guessing no12:33
Azelphuryea, I'd say good changes.12:33
mungbeanlol12:33
MyrttiAlanBell: I might set up a network to collect some select kitchen waste from nearby curry places and cantines ;-) who knows...12:34
Azelphurgames have been demonstrably proven good over and over again in studies12:34
MyrttiAlanBell: teabags, onion skins :-P12:34
AlanBellis the special thing that it is natural dyes?12:34
neurowouldn't the wool ... smell funny?12:34
mungbeansome people even say screen time for under 2s should be zero12:34
neuro<- wool n00b12:34
mungbeanimpossible12:34
neuroIMPOSSIBRU!12:35
Azelphurmungbean: *shrug* I grew up on games, had an Amiga with Thomas the Tank engine12:35
Azelphurand postman pat :D12:35
Myrttineuro: not if you rinse enough, the dye binds to the wool and doesn't generally leave a smell other than what the yarn already has.12:35
redtape-renegadeAmiga ??!?? spitz12:35
neuroMyrtti: awesome12:35
Azelphurredtape-renegade: don't you hate on my thomas the tank engine.12:35
mungbeani grew up on games but was older than 512:36
neuroi have a particular envy for people who grew up when Amigas didn't cost 400 quid12:36
neuroi used to lust over those Silica Systems ads12:36
neuroOoooooh, Amiga ... ST ... accessories ... waaaa!12:36
Azelphurbut yea games certainly arn't a bad thing, there are most definitely much bigger things you should worry about :P12:37
neuroi think making sure the games have some sort of educational focus is a Good Thing12:37
MyrttiAlanBell: yup.12:37
neuroi had to lecture a couple of parents in Tesco one night because they were dithering over what to buy their kid, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 312:38
Azelphurneuro: indeed, but in my experience I find that when I play games the educational stuff tends to just arrive on it's own12:38
neurothey'd asked me for advice12:38
neuroi asked them how old their boy was12:38
ali1234i hope you told them BF312:38
neurothey said 812:38
mungbeanthats a rational approach, but certain people are worried that actual screen time makes permanent bad changes12:38
ali1234oh, CoD then12:38
Azelphurneuro: that's fail hahaha12:38
neuroi said please, look at the AGE RATINGS ON THE BOXES!!!12:38
AlanBellso you buy yarn that is fresh off the sheep (or llama) and sell it dyed in various interesting colours?12:38
Azelphurneuro: yea, rofl12:38
neuroi had to explain the games were full of blood, swearing and people dying12:38
mungbeannot talking about content, but the media12:38
AzelphurI certainly didn't grow up on no BF3 :P12:38
neuroand did they think that was appropriate for an 8 year old12:38
neurothey looked all confused for a minute, then put them back on the slef12:38
neuroshelf12:39
AlanBellwhat is the plasterboard for?12:39
AlanBelland how do you re-wrap the yarn?12:39
Azelphurmungbean: some people are worried that vaccinations cause autism too, doesn't mean they are right, you generally have to have evidence to back up crazy claims12:39
ali1234if those games aren't apprpriate for 8 yea olds, who exactly are they appropriate for?12:39
popeyif my kids walk in when I'm playing a game like that I have to quickly flick the screen off or stab ESC12:39
popeyor both12:39
Azelphurpopey: hehe, need one of those panic buttons ;)12:39
neuroAzelphur: the increase in measles cases and no apparent increases in autism bears out the paranoia in some people12:39
neuroali1234: adults12:39
Azelphurneuro: lol12:39
AlanBellextraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence12:40
Azelphur^12:40
neuroali1234: adults who can make informed choices about their media consumption12:40
mungbeanbesides i'm concerned that my 3yr old is better at mario than me12:40
neurohaha12:40
MyrttiAlanBell: plasterboard is to make the garage walls a bit more dustproof, so that the risk of making the yarn icky is a bit less. Yarn comes in hanks, is dyed in hanks and sold in hanks, doesn't necessarily require anything in between. The yarn comes from a wholeseller or spinnery, haven't figured that out yet. Might source some local alpaca farms and ask if they've got readyspun yarn.12:41
neuroTOM HANKS!?12:41
Azelphurmungbean: that's the best reasoning xD12:41
redtape-renegadesounds dusty :)12:42
AlanBellMyrtti: I guess it is going to have to come unbleached and pretty raw for people who are going to pay for the naturalness of the dye12:42
Azelphurmungbean: but yea just to give you some idea how things went for me, I had an amiga growing up, at around age 6 I got an action replay and taught the basics of hex editing, then I got a gameboy and a playstation (both with action replays) so I learned lots of stuff about memory editing and such, got my first PC, started playing MMORPGs and writing bots etc...12:42
Azelphurand now I do proper things12:42
neuroright, that's my nexus 7 all chargified12:43
redtape-renegadepopey: Your secret is safe with me , for a cheezeburger :)12:43
cr0w13yneuro: you're gonna do it?12:43
neuroprobably12:43
MyrttiAlanBell: some people might be happy with just the hand dyed and recycled dyestuff aspect.12:43
neurobit concerned about backup/restore, but otherwise i'm game12:43
neuroi wailed on the new UI when i saw the phone thing, but i've never experienced it, so i figure i should give it a try before attempting any further wailage12:43
ubuntubhoydid you backup to an external source ?12:44
Myrttianyway...12:44
neuronot yet12:44
neurostill need to figure that out12:44
AlanBellMyrtti: is colour consistency massively important? I should think that there will be variability in various steps of the process12:44
neuroi've never plugged it into a computer12:44
ubuntubhoyyou have a OTG cable ?12:44
AlanBelland what colour range can it be?12:44

ubuntubhoyahh shame12:45
ubuntubhoythats the easy way12:45
ubuntubhoyjust backup direct to a USB drive12:45
neuroaaah i see12:45
ubuntubhoyotherwise you need to copy your backup off the device12:45
redtape-renegadeThe crumpets keep looking at me to eat them .. What should I do ?12:45
neuroi'll plug it into my mbp and see what happens12:45
ubuntubhoyeat them12:45
neuroi had to use some mental app for my kindle fire hd12:46
* redtape-renegade goes to find the jam ..12:46
ubuntubhoydont forget a knife12:46
MyrttiAlanBell: colour range depends on what is used as dyestuff, might need to go forage for more colours, or grow my own. colour consistency needs a bigger pot than what I have, ie. so I can dye two kilos at a time instead of 100g. Other than that it's not massively important, and handdyed always implies that there will be fluctuation in the colours.12:46
neurohmm, cable has gone walkies12:46
ubuntubhoyget messy otherwise12:46
redtape-renegadeYes, you need a knife for a crumpet massacre !12:46

* popey shrugs12:51
redtape-renegadethat is what they are all about !!12:51
ubuntubhoyand why has it not been ported to the HD2 yet - everything else does12:51
AlanBellit isn't obvious externally why one download is harder to stage at a particular time than a raft of press releases and website pages12:52
AlanBellmaybe the release involves more than that12:53
popey"one download"12:53
popeyright12:53
popeypress releases don't crash devices12:53
AlanBellsure, but I figured the tar.gz of the image has been solid for a week or so12:54
popeyho ho ho12:54
* popey looks at the build time of it12:54
Myrttiperhaps it is horribly naive to think that when it was announced that the code and image will be published on 21st, it was already in the condition of being very very near completion?12:54
* Myrtti is naive.12:54
popeyyour expectations really do need some recalibration AlanBell12:54
AlanBellwhat I was expecting was an image file to be shoved up somewhere, and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TouchInstallProcess to have some text on it :)12:55
popeyits a preview12:55
popeyit's not "complete" by any stretch12:55
ubuntubhoyso the build will be recent12:55
AlanBellno, not complete, not expecting that12:55
ubuntubhoyas in today ?12:55
popeythat was at Myrtti12:55
Myrtticompletion in the sense of being ready to be published at some level?12:55
AlanBelljust wasn't expecting the build to be built today!12:55
popeyit's under very active development12:56
Myrttilanguage fails me again and I seem to be poking my nose where I shouldn't.12:56
popeywell the "complete" (I get your meaning) image was published earlier12:56
BigRedSwhat's finished?12:56
popeybut not all the other bits were ready12:56

ali1234engadget "review" tells all you need to know. basically nothing works yet.12:58
ubuntubhoybut people want to try the interface, not so much the 'bits'12:58
ubuntubhoyso it should be complete enough12:58
ali1234do they?12:58
ubuntubhoyyeah12:58

AlanBellwhat is the question?14:52
A5c11Char5etmysql_query is returning an error14:52
A5c11Char5etIt says its not good SQL14:53
diploDon't think the table name needs quotes, not sure if that's enforced14:53
BigRedSTables want backticks rather than quotes14:54
A5c11Char5etIf Confirmed field is an integer would the quotations be omitted ?14:54
BigRedS` rather than '14:54
diploCould be the fields are not correct for the values14:54
A5c11Char5etAh, okay :)14:54
AlanBellbackticks14:54
AlanBellor not at all14:54
BigRedSyou can generally get away without any sort of quote mark if you've no funny characters and are not using reserved words14:54
BigRedSer, actually, I think the values list always needs quoting, but not the table name or field names14:54
BigRedSalso, isn't mysql_query deprecated?14:55
BigRedSassuming php14:55
neuroBACKTICKS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN14:55
BigRedSOh, only in 5.514:55
A5c11Char5etThis is what its reporting..14:55
A5c11Char5etInvalid query: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ''Name', 'UserName', 'Email', 'PWordHash', 'Confirmed') VALUES ('Jamie Hurst','A5' at line 114:55
A5c11Char5et(changed the table name to backticks btw)14:56
BigRedShm. perhaps field names are quoted, too. The only time I get anywhere near writing actual SQL it's a bit of a mess and done badly14:56

neurois your table called users or Users?14:56

A5c11Char5etdiplo, no - I haven't. I'll try it..14:57
neuroA5c11Char5et: do another pastebin of your updated query?14:58
BigRedSyeah, field names should be in backticks, too14:58
neuroshould :)14:58
A5c11Char5ethttp://pastebin.com/N2RwPCEH14:58
BigRedSwell, either backticks or no quotes14:59
A5c11Char5etBigRedS, ah - okay.14:59
A5c11Char5etI'll make that change..14:59
BigRedSlike that you've an invalid character in the field name - a single-quote14:59
BigRedSPersonally, I'd not bother. But I generally don't shout my SQL either14:59
neuroBigRedS has it with the backticks14:59

DJonesbittin: Without the f-word please19:09
DaraelI should imagine that wouldn't be particularly pleasant, no.19:09
DJonesJust looking at the specs for the Chromebook Pixel, certainly doesn't seem a machine you'd replace the o/s on, only a 32Gb ssd for local storage, admitedly 1tb of google drive storage, but only 100Mb of data transfer/month on contract19:14
DJonesUnusual screen resolution though, 2560x1700 (3:2)19:15
ubuntubhoy£1049 for the Google Chrome Pixel19:20
ubuntubhoythats one dear chromeBook19:20
cr0w13yThat's a ridiculous price19:20
ubuntubhoyyip19:21
ubuntubhoyeven more for the LTE one due later19:21
DJonesProbably cheaper to buy flights to the US, buy one there and then fly home19:21
ubuntubhoy$1299 in the states iirc19:22
ubuntubhoy$1449 for LTE19:22
cr0w13yNeed those extra pixels to look at mah crappy mobile phone pics though...19:22
DJonesWhats the betting that 1/2 the price comes from the unusually sized screen/resolution19:22
cr0w13yHow much is the cheapest chromebook?19:24

ubuntubhoyI would be happy with Chromium OS booting from my HD from GRUB19:30

ubuntubhoycr0w13y: most of my PC time is social media19:33
ubuntubhoyit's ideal for that19:33
cr0w13yI guess. I use a nexus7 for that, myself; cheaper and more portable. Not much cheaper though, really. But, I think I could probably do more with the tablet.19:36
ubuntubhoyI have an N7 as well, and also use it19:37
ubuntubhoybut at times I like the keyboard19:37
ubuntubhoyTouch also works very well on chromium OS19:37

cr0w13yNice. Tell you what I'm after: one of those cheap ARM netbooks with really low specs, no speakers and an SD screen, no touchpad -something really basic with linux on it for doing IT stuff with.19:41
cr0w13ybittin: open terminal, type: lspci look for the wireless controller. then search for it on t'interweb with the term 'linux' or 'ubuntu'. Sure you'll find something useful19:45

Olipopey: Do you know if the tablet/phone system has a codename that's going to be used for marketing purposes? We at Ask Ubuntu are trying to decide how to group these things under tags but we can't figure out the name of the thing - which isn't great when you're trying to describe it in one word!22:17
OliIf you don't, can you (or somebody in here) point me at somebody that might?22:18
OliTo clarify: the release notes call it "Touch", discussion is as "Ubuntu Phone" on Launchpad, we're currently calling it "mobile" on AU (horrible!). The closest I can get to a definitive is the developer.ubuntu.com page that suggests "Ubuntu Touch" might not be a bad name to settle for.22:24
cr0w13y'Touch' seems to be it22:26
