pulec_hi, I was backing up some files via Midnight Commander from another hdd to /home and I run out of space few times, I copied some files to ntfs partition01:01
heoyeadeath01:01
pulec_but when I wanted to run firefox with another profile, it showwed error01:02
pulec_*showed01:02
pulec_creating new one, would too01:02
pulec_it showed error that there were not permition to write01:02
pulec_so as a lame user I tried restart01:03
pulec_but then error with /etc/defauůt/ speech-direct and sena showed up01:03
pulec_with plymouth01:04
pulec_I am on samsung nc10 with intel atom and intel graphics01:04
pulec_and what I found, plymouth is connected with nvidia drivers01:04
pulec_Xorg -configure showed two errors, two many screens connected or what01:05
pulec_so again, as a lame user, I backed up files and tried reinstall01:05
pulec_its stuck on restoring packages for few hours now01:05
pulec_and one important thing, I was resizing that ntfs partition01:06
pulec_maybe gparted changed uuid somehow, because it showed that disk with uuid xxxx is not there annymore01:07
pulec_but that was about 2 weeks ago01:07
pulec_i am not sure if all those file names are correct, I had few beers01:07
David-Apulec_: is your current /home on a filesystem of type ext2/ext3/ext4 or of type ntfs? (system and home should not be ntfs/fat)01:08
pulec_corrupted 750gb drive here from a stupid friend, another ***** notebook with lots of **** installed with windows, and some very bad habbits....01:08
pulec_of course my  /home is ext401:09
pulec_ntfs is all for windows7, needed for school stuff01:09
pulec_xubuntu was working only with ext4 partition and 2gb swap file01:09
pulec_I dont know what went wrong01:10
pulec_I did change the battery, but I made almost 10 restarts since that, everything went well01:10
pulec_I also did few updates with new kernel, everything went fine01:10
David-Apulec_: does s.m.a.r.t data from the disk says it is okay? (e.g. using the DiskUtility to see it)01:11
pulec_only after I started backing up that hard drive and got error with firefox, that did not have write permission01:11
pulec_oh hell...01:11
pulec_I dont even want to start thinking that hdd could be corrupted01:11
pulec_will check01:11
pulec_I am on live xubuntu right now, any idea what program for smart reading is there?01:12
pulec_12.10 xubuntu that is01:13
David-Apulec_: it should be DiskUtility or something01:13
pulec_tried running it via terminal, nothing..01:14
pulec_application finder is no help01:14
David-Apulec_: in the terminal it was called palimpsest before, but I think it has changed now01:14
pulec_will try to check in in windows01:15

pulec_will see what reinstal did with it01:29
David-Ayes, but not tonight? right?01:31

blue_pearlanyone faced problem with sync in Google Chrome on Xubuntu 12.10 ?18:28
nikolamwell here it does not.. it is installed on Pata HD and updated. It is 12.04.218:29
blue_pearlapps and extension does not sync with Xubuntu but it syncs fine with Ubuntu 12.1018:29
nikolamZelouille, it must be it acquired a bug after updates...18:29
blue_pearlhowever bookmarks sync perfectly18:29
nikolamblue_pearl, why you are not using chromium from repositories, anyway?18:30
nikolamit is the same thing as chrome  i suppose, minus those spying google things in chrome18:30
blue_pearlnikolam, ok will try chromium lets see if it can sync18:31
blue_pearlchromium does the same, it does not sync my apps and extension like chrome18:37
nikolamyou could try report it to google if chrome is about, since they make binaries. If it ends up it is about xubuntu, then there goes report.18:37
xubuntu463hi18:37
xubuntu463someone can help me?18:37
nikolambut, ubuntu and xubunut are basically the same thing, xubuntu just uses xfce.18:37
nikolamxubuntu463, just ask question. don't as to ask :P18:38
xubuntu463thanks, i'm trying to kill XServer or change the runlevel for install nvidia drivers but i can't... where is inittab?? xdm stop should work??  thanks!!! pd: sorry, i speak a bit english18:39
nikolamI think nvidia drivers need X not to be active.18:40
nikolamI think i remember i used to pkill xdm I think18:40
nikolamand also I looked if there is X active with ps -A | grep X18:41
xubuntu463yes, before install drivers I need X not be active, there's the problem... i don't know how...18:42
xubuntu463PS -A | grep X returns: 1167 tty Xorg...18:43
xubuntu463i can kill the proccess?18:43
nikolamwell, kill it (1167)18:43
xubuntu463using the PID18:43
nikolamI do like that. maybe not elegant, and there is another solution, but I kill it. ;P18:43
nikolamkill PID just asks it. kill -9 PID destroys it. Yeah. :P18:44
lightahi here I tough it was a faq but didn't found anwser yet, so I try to append txt to a file. echo "foo" >> log/file.log I'm keep having permission denied even in 777 chmod, any idea ?18:45

xubuntu124A big thanks to the developers, Xubuntu 12.10 runs brilliantly on my 7 year old computer. Much smoother than Ubuntu Unity...19:17

eanderson_Any one in here successful in running a multi monitor setup in xubuntu without having to run xrandr manually every session?19:30
eanderson_I following the first 2 options at http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/how-to-use-multiple-monitors-in-xubuntu.html and seems to be having no luck with either19:30
eanderson_*was19:30
sSsnot currently runing it but on 12.04 i had LCD + HDMI running without issue on my laptop19:31
eanderson_hmm19:33
eanderson_did you end up dropping a sh your home dir and letting "session and startup" launch it?19:34
sSsi didnt have to do anything19:34
sSsjust plugged in the hdmi cable n i was good to go19:34
sSscant do it on 12.10. no driver support for my hd 420019:35
eanderson_yea, that's how it SHOULD work19:35
eanderson_but apparently the "Dispaly" control applet isn't geared for that in 12.1019:36
eanderson_bummer19:36
eanderson_I can seem to get it working using arandr19:39
eanderson_which last only for the currently session19:39
eanderson_when I logout, POOF settings revert back to mirroring.19:40
eanderson_I just want to know where i need to tinker to make those settings permanent19:40
well_laid_lawnI'd just add the xrandr commands you need to to startup applications and try that19:44
well_laid_lawnjust had a thought -- are you saving the session when you've set the monitors up with arandr?19:45
eanderson_so i tried using the "Session and Startup" panel19:48
eanderson_but they either don't run, or are overridden in the startup process post running19:48
eanderson_can't tel which19:48
eanderson_I created a script using arandr19:49
eanderson_and saved it to my home19:50
eanderson_then setup a new entry to run "/home/eanderson/.screenlayout/standard.sh" in the session and startup panel19:51
eanderson_well_laid_lawn:can you direct me on how to "just add the xrandr commands you need to to startup applications and try that"19:55
eanderson_i think I have done that correctly19:56
well_laid_lawnyou would add the command the same way that you would run it in a terminal or tty19:58
well_laid_lawnbut it would have to be a one liner19:58
well_laid_lawnI'd check if xfce is saving the session or not19:59
well_laid_lawntoo19:59
eanderson_so I just cleared the session cache20:01
eanderson_the arandr exe wasn't listed to begin with20:01
strangehey guys my powerbutton on the laptop is broken is there a way to return from suspend with a keyboard press instead of pressing power button?20:47
well_laid_lawnstrange:  see if this helps - http://www.absolutelytech.com/2010/10/17/howto-suspend-ubuntu-from-terminal-or-keyboard-shortcuts/20:49
strangewell_laid_lawn: it seems outdated i donthave the settings its referring to20:55
strangekeyboard shortcuts i can suspend it fine the waking up thats the problem i want to be able to resume with a press of a button20:55
well_laid_lawnstrange:  I don't use suspend but I had a bit of a google and it seems the keyboard doesn't have any power to it during suspend, just the memory has a trickle of power21:04
well_laid_lawnchecked the power manager's options for something?21:05
well_laid_lawnfound this howto for crunchbang which might give a clue21:06
well_laid_lawnhttp://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1325421:06
well_laid_lawnnope that's just for going into suspend21:07
xubuntu189is there a iso version with the games, software ?  im looking for a version without any software in the iso22:06
moetunes!netinstall22:08
ubottuUbuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - Don't want to use a CD? See http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate22:08
moetunes!miniiso22:08
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD22:08
uunderdogHi, this is my first day with ubuntu and opted for xubuntu over unity23:14
uunderdogI am hoping to easily connect my Mac laptop with my Intel Core i5 Ubuntu 12.10 to transfer some files23:15
uunderdogSo I just installed Samba. Ubuntu Software Center sees it, but Xubuntu does not23:16
moetunesI'm sure you could do that with samba, cifs or nfs - not sure what the mac would support best23:16
moetunes!samba23:16
ubottuSamba is the way to cooperate with Windows environments. Links with more info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently and https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/C/windows-networking.html - Samba can be administered via the web with SWAT.23:16
uunderdogWhere is software installed and how can I launch Samba with Xubuntu?23:16
moetunesopen the file manager and start typing the address23:17
moetunessmb://server/to/connect/to23:17
uunderdogSo, I am trying to run samba from ubuntu so I can type smb://server on my Mac23:18
uunderdogJust need to launch Samba on my ubuntu, but Xubuntu doesn't see it, but it's there.23:19
moetunesI don't use samba so I can just suggest reading those links above or wait a bit and see if someone else knows23:19
uunderdogI will check out the links thank you.23:19
uunderdogWhen one uses apt-get install, where on the hard drive are the apps installed?23:21
uunderdogIs there a way to tell Xubuntu that the app I recently installed is in fact there?23:22
moetunesif apt downloaded the package it knows it's there23:23
uunderdogIf It means Ubuntu Software Center, then yes it sees the Samba23:23
uunderdogIf It means Xubuntu, then no, it doesn't see it.23:24
uunderdogCan I launch Samba from the Ubuntu Software Center?23:24
moetunesanyway look in /var/cache/apt/archives23:24
moetunessamba is a serice so in a terminal do   sudo samba start23:25
moetunes/serice/service/23:25
moetunesthat'll be mentioned in those links23:25
