sirriffsalotIs it a bad idea to go for some of the ppa's from kxstudio in any way? Could it damage my system somehow?04:32
sirriffsalotThe broken/unstable packages asied04:32
sirriffsalotaside*04:33
len-dtI have not had any problems with it. you are limited to LTS releases though.04:50
sirriffsalotlen-dt: tend to stick to them anyway, thanks :)05:07
HernouHi07:27
Hernouho to add a command linge to the application list ?07:28
Hernouthe application list with that we can launch file07:29
Hernou...07:29
swolI installed the "ubuntustudio-desktop" from Mint14_Xfce. All the 'extra' software that ubuntustudio seems to be listed in the main menu under 'other' but the links to the software are not working. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and seem to be going round in circles. Thanks for any help15:25
swolseems the bulk of my post disappeared15:26
swolI added ubuntustudio-desktop to Mint 14 Xfce but dont have access to the audio software15:28
swolMaybe I should just use the ubuntustudio install disk15:28
shai_haludhaha, yeah swol, that's just a de15:31
swol378 mb of de....15:31
shai_haluddamn15:32
shai_haludubuntu studio os is bigger thuogh15:32
swolI have it installed, on my desktop Ubuntustudio, so I have the disk15:32
shai_haludhave you used it much?15:33
swolI am starting to, but have recorded nothing. I am using it as my os...for a few months15:33
shai_haludyou want it mainly for music creation?15:34
swoleventually yes15:34
shai_haludinstall lmms too then15:34
shai_haluddoesn't come with , for some reason15:34
swolI really want to record live instruments15:35
shai_haludit's the easie15:35
shai_haludwoops15:35
swolBass Guitar and harmonica and vocals15:35
shai_haludaudacity and ardour  can serve most of those needs. have you figured out how to use jack yet?15:36
swolwith some hydrogen drums I guess15:36
shai_haludyeah15:36
shai_haludcool15:36
swolyou mean the adapter ?15:36
shai_haludyes15:36
swolNo ..I got to buy a 1/4" to mini adapter15:36
shai_haludoh, wait, no. there's a program called jack15:37
shai_haludi mean, yeah, you'll need the adapter too, i meant, it's like a switchboard for your programs15:38
swolNo..I will have to plug in before I can use any of the software, hehe, but I am aware of Jack15:38
shai_haludk15:39
shai_haludonce you figure it out, it's just a matter of learning the programs. until jack is configured though, most won't make a sound15:39
swolI really just want to get off the ground with a simpl recording of me singing with my guitar15:40
swolWill Ardour or Audacity handle that ?15:40
shai_haludyes15:40
swolwithout Jack15:40
shai_haludaudacity doesn't need jack but ardour does15:41
swolSo I set Jack up first then ?15:41
shai_haludyes15:41
swolswitch from alsa to pulse ?15:41
shai_haludin some applications15:41
swolI read about that15:42
shai_halud ycertain ones use one or the other, some use either15:42
swolWill audacity record a simple mis=crophone setup ?15:42
shai_haludyes15:43
shai_haludwithout need of anything else15:43
swolThen a bass guitar plkugged directly ?15:43
shai_haludyeah15:43
shai_haludanything15:43
swolas a second track15:43
shai_haludfor 2nd tracks it gets a little trickier, as you don't want bleedover15:44
shai_haludso it's best to use headphones for monito15:44
shai_haludr15:44
swolbass plugged directly ...no amp15:44
shai_haludi doubt you should use boosted output in your speaker's input15:45
shai_haluder you computer15:45
swolI mean plug from the bass guitar to the computer input....unamplified15:46
shai_haludyes15:46
swolas a second track15:46
shai_haluddon't amplify the signal going into the computer's mic jack15:46
swolright15:46
shai_haludyes, you can do that15:46
swolcool15:46
shai_haludmake sure to disable the external mic in audacity15:46
shai_haluder, i mean, is this a laptop?15:47
swolNot yet but thats where I was going to end up after practice on the deskyop15:47
swoltop15:47
shai_haludk. , because laptops generally have 2 mic ports. the integrated and the jack itself. you'll want to make sure the integrated is off to avoid air hiss15:48
swolnly one mic port on nthis laptop15:48
shai_haludand hum from the cpu fan, etc15:49
swolahhh yes15:49
shai_haludno integrated mic?15:49
shai_haludup by the camera?15:49
swolno camera...this here is vintage15:49
shai_haludhaha15:49
swol2.6 ghz P4 with 2 Gb ram15:50
shai_haludare you american, by chance?15:50
swolyes...displaced Canadian15:50
shai_haludhaha. i know some of each15:50
swolliving in America15:50
shai_haludand an egyptian in Ca15:50
swolEgypt to Canada...15:51
shai_haludyep15:51
swolmore snow, less sand15:51
shai_haludindubitably so15:51
swolwhere are you then...Egypt ?15:52
swolSo anyway It sounds like audacity will handle simple multi track recording from an external microphone15:54
swolThanks for the tips shai_halud, to work now15:55
shai_haludhey15:55
shai_haludhere is a track i made yesterday with lmms, btw http://filebin.net/pkz3d0blco15:55
shai_haludyw15:56
swolzipfile huh?15:56
shai_haludyou can dl it other ways15:57
swolits downloading as zip...no problem15:57
swollmms is all electronic manufactured sounds correct ?15:58
shai_haludit's just a 24 second piece of a song. i have a lot of work to do on it15:58
shai_haludyes15:58
shai_halud this will be a good sample for you15:58
shai_haludit's quite nice15:58
swolno actual instuments15:58
shai_haludnope15:58
shai_haludsounds like them though15:58
shai_haludit's a wonderful program15:58
swolI will listten with a discerning ear15:59
shai_haludusing electronic methods of creation is a good way to expand what you do on guitar15:59
shai_haludi have played for 20 years now15:59
swolplayed what for 20 years ?16:00
shai_haludguitar16:00
swoloh ok16:00
swolme too...except 35 years16:00
shai_haluddayum16:00
shai_haludthat's my age16:00
shai_halud(i lie. 36)16:00
swolThat makwes me at least 36 years old16:00
shai_haludhehe16:00
swol50 plus...ahem16:01
shai_haludso you know about my favorites then16:01
swolyou mean eric and jimmy and jeff ?16:01
shai_haludKing Crimson, Jethro Tull, Rush, etc16:01
swolok...16:01
shai_haludthose guys are great too16:01
swolI like the tull guy,,,squire ?16:02
shai_haludMartin Barre, i think16:02
swolbarre yah16:02
shai_haludI'm not used to seeing anyone over 30 on irc. this is a treat16:03
shai_haludso you play bass, or both?16:04
swolNo kidding.....Have to go to the Lawn Bowling Channek I guess16:04
shai_haludhaha16:04
swolbass guitar some banjo and harmonica16:04
* shai_halud wonders if guys on wall street/ doctors, and lawyers use irc16:04
swolThey have "special" secret channels...hehe16:05
shai_haludright, and politicians16:05
shai_haludso, , about your discerning ear16:05
swolpoliticians no.....too self obsessed to learn absolutely anything new16:06
shai_haludtry the file yet?16:06
swollemme check16:06
shai_haludand i REALLY have never met anyone your age who uses linux16:07
shai_haludimpressive16:07
shai_haludthis is just a meagre sampling of what lmms can do. I only started using it yesterday16:09
swolTheres lots of older users in the Mint and PCLinux crowd16:09
swolthe easy to use16:09
shai_haludi have mint now and unsed to have pclinux os16:10
shai_haludit's not too bad once you go over a few tricky things16:10
shai_haludthere are some great online guides16:10
shai_haludi got this much done in a day, so, go figure16:10
shai_haludi'm no genius16:10
swolI have used mint since 0716:11
shai_haludit's a great os. what DE do you use?16:11
swolI switched to Xfce when the gnome 3 hit the stands16:11
zequenceswol: there are a bunch of meta packages for Ubuntu Studio. You don't need the desktop. Try ubuntustudio-audio16:11
zequenceswol: Make sure to add yourself to audio group, in order to get realtime privilege16:11
shai_haludi have the whole thing installed already16:11
swolok thanks zequence16:12
zequenceswol: And if you want low latency, install linux-lowlatency (or, does Mint roll their own kernels?)16:12
shai_haludoh damn. i thought that was still shol talking16:12
swolthey may but I am not familiar with low latency from mint16:12
zequenceswol: To see all the meta packages, in a terminal, do: apt-cache search ubuntustudio16:12
shai_haludi don't think mints rolls kernels16:13
swolme neither16:13
shai_haludgood thing about ubuntu16:13
zequenceif Mint has linux-lowlatency, then they don't16:13
shai_haluduh, no they don't16:13
swolBut I think the liqorish kernel or something16:13
swolI will just go and install the full ubuntu studio16:14
shai_haludmight be better/easier that way16:15
swolI also boot bto Mint 13 Matre here16:15
swolMate16:15
shai_haludi use mate now too16:15
swolMate is gnome 2 ish16:15
shai_haludwent from cinnamon to kde to mate16:15
shai_haludi still have them all, of course, and switch as the mood strikes me16:16
swolok...I cant do Kde and cinnamon uses extra cpu that I dont want to give away16:16
shai_haludnew kde with plasma workspace is a beast for resource hogging, but it's also beautiful16:17
swolI am using the mint 14 lxde on a usb flash16:17
swolits a polish community edition16:17
shai_haludpolish? as in ploand?16:17
shai_haluder you know16:17

shai_haludindiana boy- i was a fish out of water, but i loved every minute16:23
swolIts all fun for a while,,,hehe16:24
shai_haludyeah. you said it16:24
swolAre you in some strange land now ?16:24
shai_haludback in indiana16:24
swolthat could qualify huh?16:25
shai_haludit has it's strangeness, but it's mostly mundane16:25
swolnot....boring?16:25
shai_haludthat too16:25
shai_haludno music here16:25
swolhmm...it's every=where...no live music...yah16:26
shai_haludi got spoiled in Nashville Tennessee16:26
swolLife kicks in and live music anywhere is a treat ! If you can find time !16:26
shai_haludyou wouldn't belIEVE the calibre of music the up and comers are making there these days16:27
swolTo overly produced for me16:27
shai_haludoh no16:27
swolfor example ?16:27
shai_haludthese people are pulling themselves up by the bootstraps man16:27

shai_haludthose too16:30
swolsounds good....16:30
shai_haludgood places for assitance16:30
swolyes...I learn all ..or most of my solutions equally google and irc16:31
shai_haludmhmm16:31
shai_haludthe web is a wonderful place if you know how and where to look16:32
swolI always clainm to have done a thorough googling anyway before I ask in irc...hehe16:32
shai_haludthat can easily be refuted16:32
swolI know but its a good start16:32
swolIts not a total; lie16:33
shai_haludyou don't want to get one of those "let me google that for you" links16:33
swolI usually google first16:33
swolI have16:33
shai_haludi bet16:33
shai_haludi did.... once16:33
swolNot to menytion just straight attack for not finding my own answers16:34
shai_haludsome geeks are proprietary with their knowledge. most you find on irc are pretty easy going, thankfully16:34
swolI agree...most16:35
shai_haludyou have 2 types of irc assholes. the elitist geeks and the trolls16:35
swol2 is not broad enough16:36
shai_haludthey comprise a very small percentage of actual irc users16:36
shai_haludthen there's the variants of each16:36
swolVery true. But there is nothing worse than an empowered elitist16:37
shai_haludexcept maybe an incessant troll16:37
swolwho PM's16:37
shai_haludoh god16:37
swolhehe..thats the one16:37
shai_haluddispicable16:38
swolListen I must leave....Good ta meet ya....later k?16:38
shai_haludlikewise, yup16:38

Haohmaruhello, i'm trying to put ubuntustudio on this machine which already has winXP and i'm trying not to f*ck up anything.. i reduced the size of the last partition and now i got a "free" chunk of about 58GB http://i.imgur.com/yxt8aZZ.png18:57
zequenceHaohmaru: Looks good to me19:05
zequenceHaohmaru: What you need to be aware of is that when you install Ubuntu Studio (and I guess you know this already), the Windows bootloader will be replaces with GRUB19:06
zequencewhich is no problem, since GRUB can see and boot windows19:06
zequenceHaohmaru: You'll need two partitions. One SWAP partition which should be roughly 2x your RAM size19:07
zequenceAnd the other a EXT4 for the root "/"19:07
andyHi, I need some help installing drivers for an Asus Xonat DX PCIE card19:40
andythat's Xonar19:40
zequenceandy: There are no special drivers for PCI cards on Linux19:41
zequenceandy: Are you saying it doesn't work?19:41
andyIt works but the volume is very low19:42
andyIf I turn it up it distorts19:42
zequenceandy: Here's a little guide I wrote about audio on Ubutnu Studio https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro/120419:42
andyOk thanks - I have disabled Pulseaudio19:43
zequenceandy: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-Asus19:44
zequenceandy: If you look in details, that stuff is not relevant to you19:44
zequence..since the driver is already installed19:44
andyI was just on this site, but I couldn't figure where to do the download19:44
zequenceandy: There's nothing to download19:45
andyunzip what?19:45
zequenceThe driver is a part of the core alsa packages, where all the drivers are included19:45
andyI have these via package mgr19:45
zequenceandy: The drivers are not split into different packages. You already have the driver.19:46
zequenceIf there's a problem with the driver, it's a bug, and should be reported. But, I'm more leaning on leveling issues19:46
andyOk . .. .19:46
zequenceandy: What kind of mixer are you using to handle the audio levels for the card?19:47
andyI just rebooted so I think I should try alsamixer19:47
zequenceThere's alsamixergui, if you want a graphical version19:48
andyStill distorting badly19:54
Haohmaruzequence, thanks, i resized it so that i got ~4.7GB "swap" chunk after the ext420:04
Haohmarudoes the swap chunk need to be formatted, cuz it didn't automatically mark itself for format20:04
Haohmaruand can i abort the installation after these new partitions get created/formatted, cuz i read that i need to boot my winXP before proceeding with linux installation, so that it can "detect" that my E:\ has been "resized" ..20:06
zequenceHaohmaru: Don't know why you would need to boot XP before installation is complete. Just sounds like XP will find the new size at next boot20:47
Haohmarui read it somewhere20:47
zequenceHas nothing to do with the boot loader anyway20:47
zequenceOr, does it?20:48
zequenceI guess there's a chance that there are som win tools in the boot sector20:48
zequenceYou can safely abort installation. The partitions will be there the next time again20:48
Haohmarutoo late now, i pressed next and now it's kind of installed20:49
zequenceHaohmaru: It's not too late until GRUB is installed20:49
zequenceThat happens last20:49
Haohmaruwhen is GRUB installed exactly?20:49
zequenceIt's the very last step of the process20:50
Haohmaruright now it finished showing me pretty pictures about what apps it hast20:50
Haohmaruand wants me to reboot20:50
Haohmaru* has20:50
zequenceThen, yes, too late20:50
zequence:) good luck20:50
Haohmaruoookay, thanks20:51
zequenceHaohmaru: If for some reason you want to reinstall XP again, just do that. But, then GRUB will be removed.20:51
Haohmaruahum20:51
zequenceGRUB can be added separately, but you might find it easier to just reinstall Ubuntu Studio again, after a win XP install20:52
Haohmaruso after the reboot, there was a bootloader ;]20:59
zequenceI'm assuming you mean there was now the GRUB boot loader, and no Windows boot loader21:03
Haohmaruyes21:03
zequenceHaohmaru: So, booting into XP was fine?21:04
zequenceThis guy is funny https://plus.google.com/u/0/102544462835105704231/posts21:04
Haohmarui didn't boot XP yet (but i saw it in the bootloader list)21:04
Haohmaruimma reboot again now and see if my XP is broken or not21:05
HaohmaruwinXP detected that something's wrong with drive E: so it ran CHKDSK automatically, then it ran fine21:13
Haohmarukewl21:13
Haohmarujust one question: how do i move the taskbar thing which is on the top, to the bottom of the screen?21:16
zequenceHaohmaru: Right click on the panel. I don't use XFCE much, so I don't know this on top of my head, but all the controls are there21:19
zequenceJust read the menu that pops uå21:19
zequenceup*21:19
Haohmaruah, figured it21:21
Haohmaru\o/21:21
=== arges_ is now known as arges
