[01:26] msg [01:31] hello === zequence_ is now known as zequence [11:33] Good evening :) Good evening. I've just noticed my 12.10 ubuntustudio, apps has lost their menu with the min/close icons. http://i.imgur.com/SCFC43t.png What can I use to restore it? I'm using an Intel HD 4000, reboot doesn't solve it. Multiwindow seems disabled too. [11:53] SuperRoach: Metacity has crashed [11:53] Or, no [11:53] It's something else [11:53] It's the program that draws the window borders [11:54] SuperRoach: Do you have Desktop FX enabled? Try disbling them. [11:54] SuperRoach: And, is it like this every time you restart? [11:55] zequence, yeah its every time I restart [11:55] I'll have a look at disabling desktop fx [11:56] Metacity is what draws window borders to Gnome. FXCE has something else [11:57] And there's also Compiz somehow baked into all of that [11:57] If used.. [11:58] Compiz is often used for fancy FX [11:59] apparantly I don't have compiz installed, nor metacity [12:02] zequence, to make things tricky, if I look at settings ("customize your desktop"), clicking on "window manager" hangs instead of giving me a dialog [12:03] SuperRoach: Have you installed any graphic drivers lately? [12:04] zequence, not that I'm aware of no. [12:04] A stock 12.10 install was working ok. I think it may have been after a firefox update possibly. [12:04] A bit annoying not being able to bring up the window manager to look further. [12:05] SuperRoach: Could be some user files that have gone bad [12:06] SuperRoach: No change in theming? [12:07] zequence, fixed after more googling! :) [12:07] SuperRoach: Yeah? [12:07] The problem was my "xfce session seems to have been corrupted" . I had to rm -r ~/.cache/sessions [12:08] Ref: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1955078 [12:08] SuperRoach: Cool. I'll try to remember that next time someone has weird problems :) [12:09] Was a bit of luck finding that one. I was looking at compiz and window manager as well. [12:10] SuperRoach: It might be a good idea to clean the home totally sometimes. At least cache and settings that one will not miss [12:10] Those will be autoreplaced with default settings [12:10] Well, at least if one is having problems [12:11] Agreed. Might add it to bash lest I'll probably forget. [13:00] what does wise up douche [13:36] where should i be looking for to see what serial ports are available? [13:51] Haohmaru: usb, SATA and Firewire are all serial, but are you talking about the old classic style? [13:51] same size as VGA, but less pins [13:52] I think the last paralell port to vanish was IDE [13:55] zequence, yeah, RS232 [13:56] actually there's a device which connects to USB but acts as a serial port [13:56] it uses the FTDI usb<->serial driver (which seems to be already part of ubuntu) [13:56] so on windows - this driver creates a virtual serial port [13:58] Haohmaru: So, you want to see if the port is usable, or not? [13:59] Haohmaru: lsusb [13:59] Try that for usb devices [14:00] lspci for MB attached chips [14:00] Haohmaru: To see what they can do, do: lsusb --help, or to read the manual: man lsusb [14:00] Hit "q" go quit the manual
