David-Aearthling_: do you want to know if there is a difference when using different distros for xfce?01:44
earthling_David-A, yeah01:46
earthling_was wondering that01:46
David-Aearthling_: sorry, then I dont understand the question :)01:49
David-Aearthling_: things are different in different distros, e.g. package management01:50
David-Aearthling_: regarding xfce they may have different default themes01:51
David-Aearthling_: is there any particular differences you wonder about?01:51
earthling_so many choices in linux01:51
earthling_I guess I need to try alot of them out01:52
David-Aearthling_: you know of distrowatch.com ? there is a top list, and links to sites and reviews01:53
earthling_David-A, I suppose you would recommend xubuntu01:54
earthling_yeah, I've seen that site01:54
David-Aearthling_: So far it is my favorite.01:54
David-Aearthling_: as you can see, there is a new distros released every day. so if you want choise...01:55
earthling_must be a thousand of distros01:57
David-Aearthling_: there are sites about "how to choose a linux distro". they could help you. but there are thousands of those sites, so you have to chose one.02:04

earthling_I was chatting on #debian and somebody was scanning my ports, are ports used by hackers to get into a system?03:33
holsteinearthling_: open ports03:33
earthling_but ports are necessary to use internet?03:34
earthling_so some have to be open,right?03:34
holsteinearthling_: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_scanner03:34
holsteinearthling_: you probably dont have any open, unless you opened them, or your router is set for upnp03:34
earthling_are they closed by default on ubuntu?03:35
earthling_I didn't open any that I know of03:35
holsteinearthling_: i always install and setup a firewall for public machines03:35
james__http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1488850.html I just used this tutorial to set up my printer. Now when I try to remove the extracted folders from my downloads folder, I get permission denied?03:36
holsteinearthling_: if you are on a router, that is public facing03:36
holsteinjames__: you can use sudo.. but maybe just leave them there for now03:36
james__Could removing them cause any harm?03:37
earthling_holstein, sudo ufw enable ?03:37
holsteinjames__: could it do any good?03:37
holsteinearthling_: thats usually what i do03:37
holsteinearthling_: unless im at home, and want connectivity behind my router03:38
james__Well, it'd make it a bit cleaner. I have a bit of OCD :p03:38
holstein!sudo | james__03:38
ubottujames__: sudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo03:38
holsteinjames__: you *can* remove *very* important files with this command03:38
holsteinjames__: what would i do? leave your system in a functioning state, and deal with "cleaning up" later when/if you need the space03:39
james__Hmm, when I followed that tutorial, were the drivers installed somewhere else?03:39
james__I don't fully understand linux, so are the drivers still only located in those original folders?03:40
holsteinjames__: you sudo unpacked them03:40
holsteinjames__: if you dont understand, just leave them there03:40
holsteinjames__: there are several ways to remove files when you dont have permission03:40
holsteinjames__: you can also *totally* ruin your machine with the same commands03:41
james__Correct. So when I unpacked them, were they installed elsewhere? Or is it getting the required information directly from where I unpacked them?03:41
holsteinjames__: from what i read, you unpacked.. as root.. then installed.. you wouldnt have needed to unpack as root03:42
james__So deleting them should cause no harm?03:42
holsteinjames__: sudo let root unpack those.. creating files that your user doesnt have permission to edit03:43
james__And I can delete them, only if I use sudo?03:43
holsteinjames__: correct.. you dont need them anymore.. you can delete them03:43
holsteinjames__: you can delete them as root03:43
james__Is sudo = root?03:44
holsteinjames__: no03:44
james__I will have to read on that when I am more awake :p03:44
earthling_holstein, gufw is the same as ufw but easier to use?03:44
holsteinjames__: sudo, as listed above, runs commands as if you were root03:44
holsteinearthling_: "easier" is a matter of opinion.. i think gufw is a GUI version.. i havent tried it03:45
earthling_a graphical version03:45
james__Okay, I will just have to delete as root?03:45
holsteinjames__: no.. you can *only* delete those files as root03:45
earthling_I usually prefer gui to command line03:45
james__Okay, I will have to check out how03:46
james__Thank you03:46
james__Um, how may I go about deleting as root?03:47
holsteinjames__: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014486 is from searching "ubuntu delete directory as root"03:47
holsteinjames__: i suggest you not.. i suggest you wait03:47
james__You suggest I leave the files there?03:47
holsteinjames__: i suggest you not accidentally break your system by running a sudo command that can do just that03:48
holsteinjames__: you can run the file manager as root with gksudo.. you can sudo rm the directory03:49
james__I am confused..03:49
james__Are those unpacked files being used?03:50
holsteinjames__: no03:50
james__Okay, so the only problem is I may accidentally delete something other than what I intended?03:50
holsteinjames__: you should *not* have unpacked them as root.. but its ok that you did.. youcan remove them as root.. but i suggest you dont, since it literally doesnt matter that they are there03:50
james__So when I said sudo, it unpacked it as root?03:51
holsteinjames__: correct.. you asked that they be unpacked as not accesible to your normal user03:52
holstein!danger03:53
ubottuDO NOT RUN THAT COMMAND! That particular command is DANGEROUS and shouldn't be uttered here. REST OF YOU: DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER! Do not use the command or utter it here thank you!03:53
james__I see. I now understand why that was unnecessary03:53
james__If I run the File Manager with sudo, it will be able to delete those files?03:53
holsteinjames__: i thought that linked the command.. but anyway.. the command *is* dangerous since it just deletes anything03:53
holsteinjames__: you run the file manager with gksudo03:53
holstein!gksudo03:53
ubottuIf you need to run graphical applications as root, use « gksudo », as it will set up the environment more appropriately. Never just use "sudo"! (See http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to know why)03:53
james__I see03:54
holsteinor, you just leave them sitting there til you are more comfortable. or you boot a live CD and navigate in and get rid of them.. or you read the link i gave above on how to remove them03:54
james__Hmm, how would I use gksudo and File Manager?03:55
james__Just type it as that?03:55
holsteinjames__: what file manager? thunar?03:56
james__I am unsure what comes with xubuntu03:56
james__Ah yes, that is it. Thank you03:57
james__Okay I have went in and delete the unpacked folders03:57
james__My printer should still work okay after a reboot?03:58
james__How do I go about deleting programs I've no need for?03:59
james__Such as Xfburn. I do not even have a CD Drive04:00
holsteinjames__: i wouldnt.. i would just use it "as-is".. you can open the package manager of your choice and remove what you like, but sometimes you will remove other things with that packages04:00
holsteinlike, xfburn.. it might take other things that you need04:00
james__Hm, okay, but if I go to Ubuntu Software Center, type in the name, it gives me the option to remove04:02
james__Is that considered safe?04:02
SunStaryes04:05
holsteinyou can break things..04:06
james__Uhm, I just installed Google Chrome. If I wanted to uninstall that, how would I go about doing it?04:07
holsteinjames__: search in the package manager of your choice04:07
SunStarwhen removing packages your better off checking the dependencies in shell with sudo apt-get build-dep then remove with sudo apt-get remove if it doesnt look like like it's going to remove anything you need04:07
SunStarsoftware center can help you in identifying package names04:08
SunStaryou can also remove with sudo apt-get purge04:09
SunStarchrome can be removed safely with software center04:10

caulfieldthanks for your answers, guys! what seems to be very nice in my book is that everything is so 'logical'. it's laughably easy to find the exact app you're looking for, and when you want to set up something, it seems you intuitively know where to search for the option.17:21

scottbombDual monitor support still needs work in Xubuntu. I created my own script file with randr and have it in my list of applications to autostart when I log in.19:55
VilmaHi.19:56
Unit193IIRC, 4.12 has much better support, but not released yet.20:02

eXtremeAkimwell im kinda new to th IRC20:10
Silence-:)20:10
Silence-Think of it as a forum. You wouldnt write "hello", "anyone?" in a forum post.20:10
eXtremeAkimim giving up hope on ubuntu ;(20:10
eXtremeAkimi guess not20:11
Silence-Even though IRC is real time, it's still good to use that approach in support channels that need to be structured.20:11
Silence-eXtremeAkim: Why are you giving up on it?20:11
eXtremeAkimnote taken :)20:11
eXtremeAkimi got tons of problems with it20:11

SunStarno kidding20:14
eXtremeAkimoh sorry, i cant launch apps from right click on desktop or by clicking the "application menu" button20:14
SunStarhave you tried restarting the computer?20:15
eXtremeAkimall it says is this > failed to launch application menu : error in line 1 char 1, the page ether doesn't exist or whiteboard ( something like that ). restarted 5 million times, tried switching desktops , switching users... nothing20:16
eXtremeAkimand i cant even find a problem like that on the net... its like im the only one...20:17
knomeeXtremeAkim, did you check the CD integrity before installing?20:18
SunStaryeah your computer hates you (sounds like a bad install. it also sounds like that box doesnt play well with non windows)20:18
eXtremeAkimi did... it came out good... im downloading now a fresh iso, putting it on another usb and i will start again :(20:19
eXtremeAkimIm soo tired of windows that it makes me puke :( only reason i dont have Ubuntu for 4 years now is my wife... i showed her the Xubutu desktop and she liked it (amaingly surprising)20:20
TheSheepnever a good idea to force people to it20:21
eXtremeAkimim not forcing her to it... shes the one complaining about windows being "slow"20:22
eXtremeAkimby the way, is there another way to make sure the image is good beside the MD5SUMS way?20:25
SunStarthe disk has a self check but dont trust it. most of the time when i have a bad ISO the self check says its good.20:29
eXtremeAkimso how can i be 100% sure the Image i created is good?20:30
* SunStar shrugs20:31

eXtremeAkimso how can i be 100% sure the Image i created is good? ( please ? )20:47
TheSheepeXtremeAkim: once you boot it, there is an option to verify it20:48
eXtremeAkimtrough what? how?20:49
TheSheepeXtremeAkim: you burn it on a cd or make a liveusb...20:55
xubuntu392good morning21:02
SunStaronce you have the disk (usb) in the computer you are greeted with boot options (install, memtest verify disk, etc..)   this is the test i was telling you about in how inaccurate and misleading it can be. but it will tell you about obvious problems21:09

eduardo__Hello!23:31
eduardo__I found a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1063965)23:31
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1063965 in alsa-driver (Ubuntu) "Choppy sound in 12.10" [Undecided,Confirmed]23:31
drceduardo__: If you wish, you can use  Brazilian Portuguese in # ubuntu-br . Also, It would help if you actually posed a problem or asked a question.  Just citing a known bug does not help.23:35
eduardo__I need help! This bug is holding me back!23:38
eduardo__I'm with a problem caused by this bug! When I put the volume at 100% it is oscillating wildly!23:39
VanessaEI've just done a re-install of my system (getting ready for some hardware upgrades), and can no longer turn on RGB subpixel antialiasing without experiencing heavy color fringing.  What did I do wrong?23:50
