nightmare__so im needing help on rerwiting a disk11:52
geirharewriting a disk?11:53
nightmare__i have a rewriteable dvd+rw disk that has a old company  windows copy11:53
nightmare__but i wasnt too erase it11:53
nightmare__i have tryed it but it says it wont work11:53
nightmare__can you help me?11:54
geirhaHm. Have never bothered with rw-discs myself, only used r-discs11:55
nightmare__i also checked the integrity of the disk by brasero disk burner and it said there ws no check sum file11:55
nightmare__on the disk or something like that11:55
geirhayou're sure the drive supports dvd+rw? some only support dvd-rw11:56
nightmare__i want too remove ubuntu and this is the only disk i own that i can rewrite my .iso to11:56
geirhayou don't have any usb sticks either?11:56
nightmare__i play mainly games on my laptop and since ive installed ubuntu its been a huge hassle and not i do not11:56
nightmare__i wish i did11:57
nightmare__but i dont money hasnt been the greatest you know lately and i had to move and lost alot of stuff11:57
nightmare__then a fire happened and i lost even more11:57
geirhaouch11:57
nightmare__just starting too get some of my stuff back11:58
nightmare__i was able to save my computer and a couple of disks and lucky enought i was able to save that rewriteable disk11:58
nightmare__so you asked if the drive is compatable right?  i dont really know do you have anyway i can find out using the terminal?11:59
geirhaIt's usually embossed on the tray. Maybe lshw can show it too12:00
geirhasudo lshw > /tmp/lshw.txt; less /tmp/lshw.txt12:01
nightmare__well it says dvd super muti dl drive12:01
nightmare__what ever that means12:01
nightmare__on a tag that was on it when i first paid for it12:02
geirhatry the lshw then. It shows you lots of information about all the hardware in the computer12:04
geirhaThere's also a gui version of lshw, but it's not installed by default12:05
nightmare__ok how do i do that12:08
geirhaIn the terminal:  sudo lshw > /tmp/lshw.txt    then open /tmp/lshw.txt in your favorite editor12:08
geirhaIf you search for dvd in the file, you'll probably get straight to the right section12:12
nightmare__ok i did it now what?12:15
nightmare__i found this in the file12:16
nightmare__ *-cdrom                 description: DVD-RAM writer12:16
nightmare__there is more to it though if you want me to paste it12:16
nightmare__this is what it says about capabilitys as well12:17
nightmare__ capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram12:17
geirhaok, I'm not sure if that's conclusive. If it has said dvd+rw in there, we'd know that either the disc or the drive must be faulty, but I don't know for certain if lshw will know/list the +-varieties12:20
nightmare__there is alot more info12:21
nightmare__i just posted what i thought would be relevent12:21
nightmare__the discrption said it was a dvd-ram writer12:22
nightmare__if it doesnt read it i hope there is a way to get it to read it12:22
nightmare__truth be told after all the hassle ive gone through with ubuntu it will take a long time for me to try it again after i get this fixed12:24
nightmare__but i hope i can at least get it fixed12:24
geirhaOut of curiosity, what was the hassle?12:25
nightmare__games12:26
nightmare__like i said i mostly use my pc for gaming pretty much all i use it for12:26
geirhaAh, via wine, yes12:26
nightmare__and it was like me runging in circles like crazy12:26
nightmare__trying to figure it out lol12:27
geirhaStrickly speaking not Ubuntu's fault, rather the game manufacturer's fault for not supporting linux. But yeah, if you're a gamer today, you generally need windows or a mac12:27
geirhaThough now with steam available for Ubuntu, I think linux will be considered by more game makers12:28
nightmare__so maybe when it gets more pc gaming freindly i might try it again also have to go into the terminal after i downloaded the file to get it to install then run to a web to get another code for the ubuntu software center12:28
nightmare__just more steps then there needs to be in my honest opinion12:29
nightmare__not that i dont think linux could change the whole aspect of computers and that there is a alot more you can do wiht it its just to many steps for me to have to take just to get 1 file downloaded12:30
geirhawine improves every day, but it may be a long while before it can run all games. Or it might never be able to keep up12:30
nightmare__sorry im getting off topic12:30
nightmare__but personally your correct geirha most games dont want to support lunix though becouse it seems to push more people away then keep12:31
nightmare__becouse its so hard to install a single file and not everyone is super computer liderate it took me at least 3hours just to figure out that when puting in my admin code it wasnt going too show up12:32
nightmare__dang got to get back on topic anyways so do you think there is anyway for me too fix it with the cd i have im pretry sure its not dvd+rw compatable but it is dvd+ram compatable and i was wondering if there was some say to munipulate12:33
geirhaSoftware packaged for Ubuntu is very easy to install, even easier than windows imo.12:34
nightmare__wel i mean yes if know how i mean typing sudo apt-get update is alot easyer12:34
geirhano, you open the software center, search and install12:34
nightmare__well everything ive installed using the center is outdated12:35
geirhadepends what you consider outdated ;P12:35
nightmare__well like wine12:35
nightmare__i downloaded it from the center12:35
nightmare__and it was like 5 versions old12:36
geirhaAnyway, back to your real problem. It's not my area of expertice, so I don't really know how to proceed. I'd try to determine if the disc is faulty by testing it in another computer, if possible.12:36
nightmare__k thanks12:36
nightmare__well i guess my best bet is to wait for my roomate to wake up lol and see if i can use one of his disks12:37
nightmare__i was just trying too see if i could do this becouse im really wanting to play my games12:37
nightmare__i have like 30 games on steam and others that i play during diffrent times12:38
geirhaYes, all ubuntu packages get frozen to a certain version at some point before an Ubuntu release, and they don't get updated to newer versions, only bugs gets fixed if they're found.12:38
geirhaAt the time of freeze, the version should be near current version, so if it's five years old, your Ubuntu release is likely five years old12:38
nightmare__um....  geirha is it bad for me to get alittle off topic12:38
nightmare__it shouldnt be i checked it12:39
nightmare__and asked some people in the irc channels they said its the lastest ones12:39
geirhaI'm the one that started it, and it's not entirely off-topic for this channel in my opinion12:39
nightmare__but i was just throwing a number out there on that one12:39
geirhaBut since there's no other traffic in this channel at the moment, I don't think any one will mind anyway12:39
nightmare__ok12:40
nightmare__well ill brb12:40
geirhaHave you tried the ubuntu version of steam though?12:41
nightmare__im back12:43
nightmare__yes i did12:43
nightmare__some games dont work though and thats most of my games'12:43
nightmare__although ima google something really fast12:44
geirhaMh. Probably takes them a while to port all the games12:44
nightmare__well i might of found my sulution to the one game i play the most12:49
nightmare__and how to install it so i might not have to uninstall ubuntu12:50
nightmare__crosses fingers12:50
nightmare__possably like i said i like ubuntu the side setup is nice and there is alot more you can do then what windows gives you that you can do12:52
nightmare__but i was afraid i wasnt goint to be able to play my games and i was raised playing games my first was pong so i was having game withdrawls lol12:53
geirhaPlay games like nethack. They work "everywhere"12:55
geirha;)12:55
nightmare__whats nethack12:55
nightmare__i know there is some lunix based games but i have never tryed any12:56
geirhaa text-based dungeon-crawler13:00
nightmare__im watching videos on it right now13:00
nightmare__do you think i sould sent you pms?13:00
nightmare__so i dont kee pon getting off topic13:01
geirhaNah, I think we're fine. No one's complained.13:01
geirhaAnd we are discussing Ubuntu13:03
nightmare__ok ever heard of desktop dungions?13:03
nightmare__it reminds me of nethack13:03
geirhaI haven't13:04
nightmare__but with char images13:04
nightmare__ill send you a link13:04

bizhanMonaHI all, I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on my system for the first time. Then I typed "sudo apt-get update" and I got the following errors:  pastebin.com/T3NffkT4   any idea please? thanks16:17
GenrawirIt looks like you're getting a bunch of 404s from the archive, so it kinda sounds like it might just be a problem with the server, you could try an alternate server16:21
