Kiloshi kodez gaan dit goed?10:25
kodezi'm better than yesterday, thanks for asking uncle kilos10:25
kodezand how are you?10:25
Kilosim good ty 10:29
Kilosapart from older than yesterday10:30
Kiloshehe10:30
kodezyeah, older and wiser than yesterday10:31
Kiloslol why you been so scarce10:31
kodezi was not stable in one place for quite sometime and sometimes i am doing my school's work10:33
Kilosah ok we forgive you10:33
kodeza big thank you10:34
kodez:)10:34
Kiloshehe10:34
kodezhave you attended the ubuntu hour in centurion?10:35
Kilosnope i am not mobile10:35
Kilosjust boer here10:35
kodezk, what are you farming? i'm interested in pig farming.10:36
kodezi'm still trying to gather information10:36
Kilosthere is money in pig farming but more in broiler chickens10:37
Kilospig farming needs special kinda cages to stop the sows getting to the piglets or they eat half of them10:37
Kilosso basically the sow can stand or lie down but always facing her feed and water troughs10:38
Kilosthen piglets drink safely10:38
Kilosthats if you wanna farm seriously with them10:39
kodezlol, i am looking for someone to train me in both projects. i have a neighbour who worked in a chicken farming project10:39
Kiloschickens is not too much work10:39
Kilosyou used to be able to contact rainbow and they would build the tunnel kinda buildings on your farm free and supply chicks and afeed and all and you get a percentage i think it was10:40
kodezplease send me you email, we can take this conversion privately as other will complain as it is not ubuntu os related10:41
Kilosthey did that to spread their base and let someone else run the risks and do the work10:41
kodezi will make a follow up with them but my priority is in pig farming at the moment10:41
charl_good afternoon11:00
charl_Maaz: coffee on11:00
* Maaz washes some mugs11:00

charl_hi kodez11:00
kodezhow are you?11:00
charl_i'm good thanks, yourself?11:01
kodezi'm better than yesterday, thanks for asking11:02
kodezwhat's interesting in your ubuntu world today?11:03
MaazCoffee's ready for charl_!11:04
charl_Maaz: thanks11:05
Maazcharl_: Sure11:05
charl_am getting a strange error on ubuntu azure: W: Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/Release  Unable to find expected entry 'precise-backports/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)11:07
charl_will have to report it11:08
kodezi don't remember how to fix repos. i will do a research and report back11:09
charl_don't worry, this is something for them to fix, not us, i'm just testing :)11:11
kodezkwl:)11:11
Kiloshi charl_ 11:13
charl_hi Kilos11:14
charl_how's it going today11:14
Kilosok ty charl_ and you?11:14
Kilosapart from your probs that is11:14
charl_neh good, very good11:16
charl_believe it or not, we actually had some snow during the early morning11:16
charl_crazy for march11:17
charl_this winter was a good one :)11:17
Kilosouch that cold wet white stuff11:17
Kilosgood winters are found in natal11:17
charl_natal according to me is a hot province though, i didn't know they could have a winter at all :)11:18
charl_in the middle of winter you could probably walk outside in shorts and a t-shirt :P11:18
Kiloshaha 10ooc is winter in durbs11:18
Kilosai!11:18
Kilos10 degrees11:20
charl_haha, you never need more than a pullover11:21
Kilos10°c11:21
Kilosthere we go11:21
Kilosno you acclimatise and then get cold same as peeps in other areas11:22
Kilosask nuvolari 11:22
charl_hahahahaha11:23
charl_in botswana the nights got cold in the winter11:23
charl_the days were fine though11:23
charl_but the nights... it's a freezing cold11:24
Kilosyip same as the tvl11:24
kodezthere are only two seasons in Durban, that's summer and summer11:24
Kilossometimes a few degrees under freezing here11:24
charl_botswana has a typical desert climate, complete extremes11:24
charl_and in the summer it can get 40+ in the day no problem11:25
charl_no thank you, give me the milder climates11:25
Kiloshaha when hot like that you save electricity you fry eggs on a shovel in the sun11:26
charl_whahahah !11:27
kodezone thing that is interesting about this weather, we have less solar power generation than coal power plants. solar power is extreme cheaper than coal.11:28
charl_according to what i've heard, solar power can be rather expensive11:29
charl_but it is of course a lot better for the environment11:29
charl_it is totally renewable and doesn't pollute the atmosphere11:29
Kilosgetting the equipment is expensive11:29
charl_yeah but after that the maintenance is minimal and you get power virtually for free11:30
charl_a good solar setup will last you for years and years with minimal maintenance11:30
kodezinstallation is expensive but running it and maintenance is close to zero11:30
Kilosbut then if im not mistaken all lights etc need to run off batteries11:30
charl_only during the night when there is no sun11:31
Kilosand stoves geysers etc off batteries with inverters11:31
charl_the batteries also need to be replaced every couple of years11:31
charl_afaik the dc is converted back to ac before it gets distributed around the house11:31
kodezi was at CSIR this past friday and in one of their magazine, i learned that there are LED globes and uses less electricity than other globes11:32
charl_yes you can buy them at ikea :)11:32
Kiloswould be more efficient to run what can off battery voltage then as im sure inverters use quite a bit of power to convert up11:33
charl_i would be surprised if they are not being sold in south africa11:33
charl_i used to think the same when it comes to ups'es11:33
kodezwhere is it? or is it an online shop?11:33
Kilosya leds are more efficient11:33
charl_but apparently the converters now are so efficient it doesn't matter anymore11:33
charl_kodez: ikea is a big store where you can buy all kinds of goods but they also have a good website, never tried ordering anything online from them though11:34
charl_ikea.nl is their dutch site11:35
charl_it's a swedish company11:35
charl_http://www.ikea.com/nl/nl/search/?query=Ledverlichting11:37
kodezthanks11:37
charl_there is one big problem with leds, they contain some hazardous elements11:37
charl_they need to be disposed of properly11:37
charl_same goes for the regular energy saving lights, they often contain mercury gas11:38
charl_(if i remember correctly off-hand)11:38
kodezi will continue with my research of alternative energy saving devices11:38
charl_http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp#Environmental_impact11:40
charl_http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LED_lamp11:41
charl_http://inhabitat.com/study-finds-led-light-bulbs-contain-unsafe-levels-of-carcinogenic-toxins/11:43
Kilossurely thats only if you bust them open11:43
charl_yeah that's what i am also thinking11:43
charl_i don't know if they need to be disposed of safely thouigh11:44
charl_*though11:44
Kilosthey are even using led tail lights on trucks here11:44
charl_yeah they are becoming very popular11:44
charl_but they still look a lot less dangerous than CFLs11:45
Kiloslol11:45
charl_afaik they are not the cheapest but some of the best all-round light sources available11:45
charl_i might uprade to them myself in the future11:45
kodezi am interest to upgrade the whole system to solar system but without removing the current municipal grid11:47
charl_i can remember seeing them at the ikea last year but i looked at the prices and they were a _lot_ more expensive than the "sparsam" lamps11:47
charl_regular CFLs11:47
charl_the prices seemed to have come down a lot though11:48
charl_http://www.ikea.com/nl/nl/search/?query=sparsam11:48
kodezi heard they last longer than the other globes11:48
charl_a heck of a lot longer kodez :)11:48
charl_leds are virtually indestructible11:48
nuvioh dear11:50
nuviI didn't use quassel in quite a while11:51
Kiloshi nuvi 11:51
nuvihi oom Kilos :) Gaan dit goed oom?11:52
Kilosgoed dankie en self11:52
nuvidit gaan goed dankie oom!11:52
nuviargh! stupid stupid! :-/ I didn't check my uptime11:52
nuviit was around 2 years :P11:53
Kilosits not that bad nuvi 12:01
nuvinu-uh, but I had to restart to get all the extra free stuff from linode12:03
nuvi'free'12:03
nuvishould I rather say upgrades12:03
Kiloslol12:03
nuviha, the best description I can think of is 'generous additions'12:05
nuvolari_\o/12:14
nuvolari_hi :)12:14
charl_what is it with the uptime wh***s, i don't understand it :)12:17
charl_all that it means is that you are a bad sysadmin because you don't restart your servers after kenel upgrades12:18
charl_or even worse, you don't even do your upgrades in the first place12:18
charl_i work in ict, executing planned server restarts is part of our job12:19
nuviuhm, it wasn't a kernel upgrade. It was a linode resource upgrade which I didn't do at the time of their last birthday because it required a reboot in order to claim the resources. And I'm not a sysadmin, so don't expect me to do everything by the book. Also upgraded ubuntu now to 12.04 from 10.04 :P12:28
charl_i'm not either, i work as a programmer :P12:29
nuviok, so you're a better hybrid then :P12:30
charl_but i have my own desktops/laptops/servers and i promise you they get upgraded and rebooted rigurously :P12:30
charl_but sorry i wasn't referring to you in particular earlier though12:31
charl_it was meant as a general statement :)12:31
nuvioh come on! why start nano with nano? ugh, once you get to know vim, anything else feels wrong12:31
nuviah ok12:31
nuvithought you tried to bathe me in mud12:32
nuviI'm not into mud wrestling12:32
charl_lol no12:33
nuviwhy is nuvolari still around :?12:34
charl_years ago i was having an argument with somebody at mosgas, he was bragging about one of their linux firewall/gateway servers having an uptime of 5 or so years12:36
charl_they actually lost the physical server, they had a power failure and they had to start it back up again but they couldn't find it12:36
charl_eventually they found it in someone's closet12:36
charl_the server came out of the closet following that, quite literally12:36
charl_anycase, i accused them of being terrible at managing their servers, for obvious reasons12:37
charl_i think it is called "p*ssing on batteries" in south africa :)12:37
=== nuvolari_ is now known as nuvolari
Kilosja ja julle14:59
charl_wb Kilos15:04
Kilosty i been doing serious work15:04
charl_?15:04
Kilosusing serious fsck command15:04
charl_:D15:04
charl_i always have to laugh at the name of that command15:05
charl_also because it is often use as a curse in a nerdy way15:05
Kilossudo e2fsck -cfpv /dev/sdxx15:05
Kilossposed to repair or mark bad blocks15:06
Kilosbut all them options dont show here in man so had to look online what they do15:06
Kilossudo fsck.ext4 -cDfty -C 0 /dev/sdxx15:06
Kilosreally serious15:07
Kilosnnow i wanna try them on a 2 TB drive but everytime i play with it here it crashes my os15:08
charl_wow ok, no kidding15:08
Kilosya serious manufacturer error on it15:09
charl_can't you return it?15:10
charl_it should still be under warrantee if it's new?15:10
Kilosit couldnt take anything else after first os was installed. just wrote bad blocks all the time15:10
Kilosno its a few years old15:10
charl_ah i see15:10
charl_a 2tb drive from a few years ago - those weren't mainstream yet15:10
charl_it's very possible that there is a flaw in it15:10
Kilosbut samsung wrote a patch for the firmware but id crashed it before i found out what was the prob15:10
Kilosit accepted the patch but whole mbr/boot is written as bad blocks15:11
Kilosso i/o error all the time15:11
charl_is it a permanent problem on the physical platter?15:12
Kilosnow im hoping fsck can fix it with them heavy options15:12
charl_or just in the way the data was written15:12
charl_afaik fsck can only fix basic problems15:12
Kilosit took 7 and xp fine but everytime any other os was tried it crashed15:12
charl_there are more advanced tools like spinrite that could try to fix it but it's not open source15:13
charl_it's a hit-and-miss in any case15:13
Kilosno i read somewhere online that those options make it repair/mark bad blocks15:13
charl_yeah but if the problem exists in the mbr that's different i think15:14
Kilosi have the manufacturers cd as well but they all say i/o error15:14
Kilosi been at it for over a month already on and off15:14
Kilosin the off periods i build up courage to try again15:15
charl_if you applied all firmware updates and rewriting the mbr doesn't help i don't think there is much that will15:15
Kiloswould really love to have a 2 TB drive working lekker here15:15
charl_a fsck won't fix problems in the mbr afaik15:15
Kilosmaybe ill try get platters for it and try that too15:16
charl_why not just use it as a data drive?15:16
charl_instead of booting an o/s from it15:16
Kiloscant write anything to it15:16
Kiloscant partition even15:16
charl_hmmm, sounds like a bigger problem to me15:16
charl_good luck with it :)15:16
Kiloslol ty. it was working lekker till i tried 3 times to install ubuntu on it15:17
Kilosthere is lotsa stuff online about the bug in the firmware but i found the patch too late15:17
Kilosanyway keeps me busy 15:18
charl_if you have the time, the worst that can happen is you learn something :)15:18
Kilosrofl15:18
Kilostime is all i have15:19
