[01:33] this music is pretty interesting http://www.youtube.com/user/MajorVsMinor/videos?sort=dd&view=0&tag_id= [01:33] pop songs shifted to minor scale === elijah-mbp is now known as eli-away [02:01] Omnifrog, that is neat [02:02] have you heard one of those videos that stays in same key but transitions between multiple songs [02:05] I have! [02:05] I play mashups from time to time [02:06] those are neat [02:07] I have trouble keeping up with them [02:07] there are so many [03:02] gah [03:02] school bus comes early [03:02] night nerds! === Omnifrog is now known as Omnifrog|pond === Omnifrog|pond is now known as Omnifrog [12:42] Omnifrog: got to drive thru your neck of the woods, man has it kept changing, growing [12:55] morning cyberanger [17:05] It has indeed cyberanger [17:06] ever since the VW plant it's been booming [17:06] hiya wrst [17:06] hello Omnifrog, how are you doing? [17:06] A bit sore today [17:07] yesterday was the first day working in the woods for a while [17:08] ahh yes I experienced something similar painting a ceiling, I don't normally use those muscles in that way [17:08] ceilings are the worst [17:10] yes, we have built a garage and just used OSB for the interior which was fine with me but the wife thought it was ugly so i painted [17:10] well 9 gallon of paint later I need at least 3 more [17:10] took nearly 5 for the ceiling [17:10] that stuff sucks paint up like a straw [17:10] no primer? [17:11] that was including primer, but i ran out of it and just used painit on the walls and could really tell no difference [17:11] its going to take 3-4 coats regardless [17:11] heh [17:11] yeah, osb is hard to cover [17:11] read that using oil based Killz was the best thing for that and it did work well but not well enough for the extra cost [17:12] but i am getting some glue bleed through without the killz but that's not bothering me that much i was just going to leave it brown :) [17:14] at least it's brighter than brown [17:30] ha ha yes but its a garage that is going to store junk [17:31] so i don't care but... [17:31] * wrst is liking the transmission web interface [20:13] https://www.google.com/ [20:32] hi all [20:32] wrst are you available? [20:32] omnifrog... run? [20:33] hi bill [20:35] ha ha bill_gill i'm here for a few minutes [20:35] and hello Omnifrog [20:51] hi omnifrog & wrst [20:51] question about installing ubuntu [20:51] sure bill_gill what is your question? [20:51] i setup 300gb drive partions as 30gb boot / 250gb - home and the rest as a swap [20:52] i'm having too many issues with samba and pulseaudio and can't get them fixed so I want to drop back to 12.04 x86 [20:53] if I do the install in the 30gb partition what do I need to select to make sure the 250gb section is set to mount in the /home of the new install? [20:53] trashing the 12.10 install is understood [20:55] http://news.softpedia.com/news/Installing-Ubuntu-12-10-301012.shtml [20:55] if the installer doesn't have that option for you to set you can do it after the install [20:55] perfect [20:55] ty [20:57] just go into whatever user management tool you prefer and enter the path [21:01] yep what Omnifrog said :) [21:05] bill_gill: i think you can also go into the advanced options or whatever they are called and specify all that too [21:05] ok [21:05] then log out and in again for PATH to take effect [21:06] i know how to do it after the fact. i was concerned that if I didn't do it at install it would not be the same. [21:08] the new path should be something like /dev/sd[x]/[directory] [21:09] assuming the drive is /dev/sda the partition for home would be something like /dev/sda2/whatever [21:10] replace the 2 with whatever partition the number actually is [21:28] the partitions aren't changing so I can use /dev/sda2/home [21:31] i think I still don't have this correct. [21:32] the partions is sda1 30gb boot primary,sba2 270gb extended with two parts ... sba6 is where my home is currently [21:33] of course, the partition will still have to be mounted first [21:33] when it builds the install the home will be on sda 1 correct? [21:33] sorry sda1 [21:34] will the new install change the device names? [21:34] initially yes (unless the installer gives you the option to hake an alternate /home [21:34] make* [21:35] i don't want to loose the files in my /home [21:35] just make sure you dont let it format the new /home [21:35] or leave that step for after the install is complete [21:35] i feel better doing it that way [21:35] just to be sure [21:35] yeah [21:36] so following that process I would end up with /home on sda1 [21:36] if your not sure leave it for later [21:36] right [21:36] then i would change it to sda6 (which is how it looks now) or will the install change the device name? [21:37] no, the device names are hardware dependent [21:37] as long as the drive is still plugged in to the same port on the motherboard it will stay the same [21:39] always double check things like that though [21:49] ok. other subject... are you running a 64bit version? [21:50] i'm wondering if some of my issues are because some libraries may have been installed as 32bit [21:51] I am [21:52] partition management is always a nightmare for me [21:53] I do a crumby job at housekeeping [22:04] i understad [22:05] i'm excited being off of windughs but it's a challenge to learn a new os on the fly [22:05] i'm getting it down though [22:05] do you have many problems with 64bit? [22:06] i'm thinking i would go run 12.04 32bit to be a bit more stable. [22:06] yeah, migrating to a new OS has it's challenges [22:07] so my pc is i3 w/ 12gb ram. [22:08] am i overkill for 32bit or will it make use of all resources [22:08] the biggest issue I've ever had with 64bit has been Adobe Flash which is a monstrous piece of shit no matter what hardware you use [22:08] no hw drive issues [22:08] driver [22:08] nope [22:09] 64 bit in Linux has been stable for a very long time [22:09] hmmm, i wonder why i'm having such issues then. do you use samba and pulseaudio? [22:09] ayeap [22:09] and jack [22:09] bluetooth on pulseaudio [22:10] my mobo has bluetooth but I don't have any devices that use it [22:10] I think I used my wifes bluetooth mose on it once and it was fine [22:10] mouse* [22:10] is jack for sensing audio port changes? [22:11] skype? [22:11] jack is just another dreadful audio sub-system [22:11] they all are [22:12] does it go along with alsa and pulse or instead? [22:12] they cal all run at the same time [22:13] jack takes exclusive control of the audio device when it's running [22:14] it's a bloody nightmare sometimes [22:20] is it for recording audio [22:20] i don't think i need Jack [22:21] i use skype and a bluetooth headset. pulse doesnt' want to play nice with skype. it takes over all in/out. [22:21] the only thing I use jack for on a regular basis is broadcasting [22:21] skype doesn't require jack though [22:22] do you use skype? [22:23] I can use skype on one of my older machines cause it's using an older version but MS has screwed up the newer version [22:23] I don't use it too often though [22:24] google talk/hangout has much better quality [22:41] on ubuntu? [22:45] yep [22:46] is google talk like skype with having a phone number a land line can call? [22:46] when I do live call in guest on the radio I always use G+ if possible [22:47] yeah, Google talk can dial out to landlines [22:47] or VOIP/video conferencing [22:47] ugh, i can't go switching from skype now... too invested [22:47] i'll take a look at it later when my contract is up with skype. [22:47] we should have live shows in here to build the community [22:48] I can broadcast it on my server [22:48] like how-to shows [22:48] sure! or call in help shows [22:49] I'm no genius at lixux so we would need experts [22:50] I'm a newbie for sure with ubuntu. if i had one complaint it would be there there are soooo many bloggers and writers and know-it-all out there. searching for an answer for a problem includes filtering out all the crap that is old, incorrect and bias [22:51] i found just more posts that removing pulse was a good idea than it was a bad idea.... turns out it's a bad idea. [22:51] yeah, lots of things need pulse [22:52] you cant really do without it [22:53] the issue i have is with skype when it loads it finds pulse and locks down so nothing else can be selected for audio. that sucks because I don't use the same devices for voice as i do for listening [22:53] also pulse is not showing the bluetooth device (handset or headset) that is connected. [22:54] the system sees it and it works but pulse doesnt' show it so it can't be selected and adjusted. [22:54] i'm sure there is a layer involved that just needs to be tweaked but alas i have not found the help video... :) [22:55] well, i'm about ready to blow up this install. Are you on 12.10? [22:57] sorry for delays. I'm cooking dinner and chatting at the same time [23:03] haha... me too [23:03] making chicken fajita [23:03] some mung bean salad and a beer [23:04] what version of ubuntu are the most happy with? [23:04] these days I'm none too pleased with any of them [23:05] I'm looking for a replacement [23:07] although, to be fair KDE is to blame for most of the issues [23:42] a replacement for linux? [23:42] or just the user interface [23:43] replacement for distro and or DE [23:44] i don't understand [23:44] Omnifrog: i'm taking that you aren't a fan of unity ? [23:45] distro being distrbution [23:45] No! wrst [23:45] i'm okay with unity [23:45] not at all [23:45] right, bill [23:45] DE = desktop environment [23:45] Omnifrog: i'm wasn't but I must say it isn't bad anymore, it and kde are the most sane desktops i think currently out there if you want a full featured one [23:46] * wrst is also a huge arch fan/user [23:50] Omnifrog: new opensuse release is also coming out tomorrow [23:51] I've been considering trying that out [23:52] if you like kde i think its as solid as it gets without using arch [23:52] and they have some nice gui management tools if you like that [23:56] I'm a bit of a minimalist but I like features too [23:57] I don't doubt SUSE is solid. last time I used it I was happy enough with it [23:58] ahh well if you like minimalist go old school, go with arch, its so minimalist it doesn't even have an installer ;)
