[00:06] hello ? [00:14] whales ftw [01:30] wow i am just at the end of my rope even trying to figure out how to download a driver or a module or whatever [01:30] what a mess [02:01] magic_silver_box: nail it down for me, and i'll try and help [02:01] maybe you dnt need a driver [02:01] dont* [02:09] oh thanks [02:10] i have an emagic unitor 8 mk1 serial port 8x8 midi interface [02:10] ubuntu studio 12.04 doesn't see it automatically [02:10] or at all [02:10] the serial port _is_ active [02:10] irq4 [02:11] i havent used a serial port in years [02:11] well [02:11] magic_silver_box: i would get a $4 USB midi adapter that works [02:11] i need eight ins and eight outs [02:11] i have a huge amount of gear [02:11] magic_silver_box: i would *not* waste time with any USB hardware.. or serial hardware [02:11] i would just purchase a usb unit [02:12] magic_silver_box: did it ever work? [02:12] no [02:12] magic_silver_box: then it likely will not [02:12] haha [02:12] uhhh [02:12] magic_silver_box: you can always ask them for a driver.. but i would just get a USB one [02:13] i figured out the is a generic serial port midi driver inluded with my build/distro/whatever it is [02:13] hold on let me get on with that box [02:13] magic_silver_box: i would just test it [02:14] magic_silver_box: i would open JACK and see if its there and route soemthing with it [02:14] oK [02:14] http://www.cs.fsu.edu/~baker/devices/lxr/http/source/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/serial-u16550.txt [02:17] i did all this modprobe crap and figured out some arguments that wouldn't kick back an error [02:17] why? [02:17] magic_silver_box: just try and use it [02:17] to try to install it [02:17] i know [02:17] like [02:17] magic_silver_box: how do you know its not? [02:17] how do i use it? [02:17] how do i install a driver? [02:17] magic_silver_box: get JACK running and try routing with it.. see if it shows up [02:17] all the documentation for this OS is so cryptic i think you just have to be the guy who wrote it in order to understand it [02:18] forgive me, i'm feeling really furious and i hope i don't offend or make a fool of myself [02:18] all right let me run jack again brb [02:19] magic_silver_box: [02:19] ? [02:19] magic_silver_box: you need to ask for documentation from where it should be coming from [02:19] the vendor [02:19] we cannot provide you documenation on how to use that hardware.. its challenging [02:19] everyones case is different [02:20] magic_silver_box: i *can*, and will remain constructive with you and troubleshoot as best i can [02:20] i know. i told you, i'm just trying to use this generic driver i found that might work [02:20] aaaaaa [02:20] i need to take a break [02:20] silverb0x: do you know its not just working? [02:20] im totally going to blow yo and youre trying to help [02:20] silverb0x: usually its just working [02:20] blow yo? blow up [02:20] lieufalasdufgtalg [02:20] silverb0x: i get it, man [02:20] its frustrating.. no doubt [02:20] anyway [02:21] ran qjackctl [02:21] start [02:21] connect [02:21] nothing shows under midi [02:21] right.. click on "connect" and see if you see the device in "midi" or "jack" [02:21] ::/ [02:21] this client thing is kind of cool though [02:21] qjackctl [02:22] there are others.. if you prefer [02:22] i like qjackctl [02:23] yeah it doesn't show [02:24] then, i would just get a USB midi unit [02:24] a cheap one [02:24] i got one for like $11.. no shipping [02:24] just get it, and get started [02:24] but i need a whole lot of I/O [02:25] silverb0x: you have none now [02:25] silverb0x: you coule drop $11 and get some [02:25] then, test.. see if you care about using ubuntu/linux [02:25] for 8x8 you can get the unitor, which is rock solid; you can get a midiman/m-audio midisport 8x8, which is not; steinberg midex, which might work with linux, i don't know; or motu, which is to be avoided [02:25] id say 1x1 is better than 0x0, or dealing with unspupported hardare [02:26] the other option is to get the unitor mk2, which is USB but still is not on the list of ALSA-supported hardware [02:26] OR.. get a few 1x1 USB ones [02:26] i am going to have a good setup or none at all [02:27] silverb0x: you have none right now [02:27] silverb0x: midi is midi. ther is nt "better' transmitting of note on and note off messages [02:28] midi is midi.. the sound creation is where you get the quality.. [02:29] i disagree. quality interfaces have good timing, and cheap ones have notoriously bad timing [02:30] especially if you're forced to run all sixteen channels on one cable. midi does not support simultaneous events. [02:30] for dance music, that's a problem. [02:30] i have to go outside [02:30] silverb0x: mine has the same timing as jack [02:30] i'm worrying myself [02:30] thanks for your assistance, be back later [02:30] silverb0x: all im suggesting is, you literally get a $10 bill and try it [02:30] you might not like the midi options anyways [02:30] also, try some other live CD's [02:30] try AVLinux live [02:31] try the old 64studio live CD [02:31] silverb0x: ubuntu cant provide you a driver.. you dont know if that link you have will work with current kernels [02:31] the vendor can, but likely wont [03:24] hi there ardour 3.0 its here D: [03:25] hectorlopez: check #ardour ..its not released yet, thought there are lots of PPA's and sources for getting it [04:36] what's that irc channel that has foss musicians/producers? [05:34] #Foss-dewdZ [10:49] what is the best text to speech program for ubuntustudio [11:49] dn4: I don't think we've done any work on making that easy on Ubuntu Studio, so generally, just whatever works best on regular Ubuntu === swappermall is now known as Guest37625 [19:48] Hola, alguien podria guiarme en español para revisar la configuracion de sonido de mi pc, lo acabo de instalar pero no suena nada [19:48] !es | leonet [19:48] leonet: En la mayoría de los canales de Ubuntu, se habla sólo en inglés.
