MoPacBoth suspend and hibernate are broken for me in Raring - Vaio F series.  Hibernate (most important for me) apparently triggers a kernel panic: the screen is black and two of my lock indicator lights blink in their characteristic panic pattern.  With suspend, the PC enters suspend power mode but resumes to normal boot with no saved session.  Any ideas?00:25
mint_hello00:39
mint_Just ran some updates, and now I can't boot. I get an error something along the lines of   alert /dev/disk/by-uuid  XXXX     help? Running from live USB at the moment00:40
MoPacmint_: Is your boot partition encrypted?00:41
mint_negative00:41
MoPacdid you see any errors on your updates?00:42
MoPacAlso, did the updates involve ubuntu-base / the kernel?00:42
mint_no, everything went fine and just said it needed to reboot in order to finish the updates00:42
mint_Not sure about the kernel right off hand, but i get the same results even if I try a previous kernel and/or recovery mode00:43
mint_Now that you mention it, i think Ubuntu base was in there, but not sure what was under that tree heading00:43
MoPacI don't have any ideas, then -- I've had lots of bad problems with upgrades in raring, but they all seemed to go back to kernel, grub, and encryption issues00:43
mint_comparing my fstab now with the blkid report00:44
mint_everything is spot on.. So at this point, am I screwed and need to reinstall?00:45
mint_thanks for the quick responses, by the way :)00:45
MoPacwell, it is also possible to reubuild the kernel and grub from within live usb00:46
MoPacin case that's the issue00:46
MoPacIt did get me into a mess because I didn't take my luks encryption step into account, but you don't have that issue00:46
mint_i still have old kernels installed, so I'm leaning towards grub.00:46
mint_How do I go about reinstalling Grub?00:46
mint_worth a shot, anyway00:46
MoPacThe second answer here is specific to kernel rebuilds from live USB, but you can probably use it more genericaly when it comes to telling your live USB session to run boot update things on your real filesystem00:47
MoPachttp://askubuntu.com/questions/28099/how-to-restore-a-system-after-accidentally-removing-all-kernels00:47
mint_just tried reinstalling grub, no errors reported. Gonna reboot and see what happens. Thanks00:51
nonubywill there be a clean path to upgrade from 13.04b1 to 13.04rtm? (is that how it was with 12.04 etc..) or is it pave/format time at these junctions?02:37
MoPacHow do I change the order of sources for a package?  I can use apt-cache policy packagename to see the multiple sources, but I don't know how to edit their priority.  There is no etc/apt/preferences file, which many searches tend to point to03:44

Kajoverhi. does libreoffice work on the current daily build?12:41
alankilaIt worked for me, though I didn't try to actually use it really. Started = works :-p12:49
Kajoverinteresting.. when i click on writer.. it lights up two or three times and thats it.. nothing opens.. clean reinstall, two times 13.04 daily from yesterday12:49
alankilastarted in about 2 seconds when I tried it.12:51
alankilatry starting it from terminal, take note of the output12:51
alankilamaybe it says something useful. Alternatively, try to scan .xsession-errors, though it's a garbage dump of crap12:51
Kajoverthats an idea,.. ill try it at home. but i dont understand why it shouldnt work.. from a clean reinstall ;)12:52
alankilait's called lowriter nowadays. I guess they resolved the oowriter name now12:53
Kajoveralinkala, didnt quite understand what you meant12:56
Kajoverah got it ;)13:00

roastedping murthy15:11
murthyroasted: hi15:11
roastedmay I ask why this would be +1 related? :P15:11
murthyroasted: beacuse it cannot be discussed in #kubuntu and its not related to it15:12
murthyroasted: its a prerelease stuff15:12
murthyso ubuntu+1 is the right place for it15:12
* genii-around makes a fresh pot of coffee15:13
murthyroasted: are you new to linux?15:14
roastedmurthy: It's a PPA for a 12.10 machine...15:14
murthyroasted: you can check if the files are installed in the right folders form muon15:15
roastedmurthy: not at all...15:15
roastedmurthy: but I understood +1 being for non-released versions of Ubuntu. This is for a 12.10 machine. I'm not understanding why +1 was necessary to converse further.15:16
murthyroasted: is the application available in official 12.10 ppas?15:16
roastedDo you mean in the official 12.10 repos?15:17
BluesKajI'm testing 13.04 , so I just leave the 12.10 stuff to others ...one mucked up OS is enough , don't need 215:17
murthyheh15:18
murthyBluesKaj: can you clarify a doubt?15:18
BluesKajwell, we can all try murthy15:19
murthyBluesKaj: can the stuff about homerun laterst version in a ppa be discussed in #kubuntu ?15:19
yofelmurthy: yes15:20
yofeland unless it's 13.04 certainly not here15:20
zniavre_hello , what is the best way to upgrade 12.10 to 13.04 please , i do not find the overview page as before ?15:22
BluesKajmurthy, if it's about 12.10 , but technically not, if it's 13.0415:23
yofelzniavre_: 'sudo do-release-upgrade -d'15:24
murthyroasted: whats your kubuntu version?15:24
BluesKajmurthy, let's notworry about it , it's not that important15:24
roastedmurthy: 12.10, with KDE 4.10 via PPA15:24
murthyBluesKaj: yes it is, i got allged complaints15:24
zniavre_yofel,  thank you , there is a web page for overviewing new things and comme worries ?15:24
zniavre_comon *15:25
philinuxzniavre_: you might like this http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=42715:26
zniavre_philinux,  thank you15:26
BluesKajwell, talking about kubuntu issues , whether they're 12.10, 1304 or any other Kubuntu OS in kubuntu-offtopic is wrong anyway , we're not supposed to discuss support probs there anyway15:28
roastedThe splitting hairs things of what's allowed in what channel is so obnoxious sometimes.15:28
roastedSorry, candid, but truthful opinion there.15:28
roastedfarewell friends15:29
BluesKajwell, I don't mean to lecture , just stating what I've been warned about by some  ppl , myself15:29
murthyBluesKaj: its about the #kubuntu-offtopic stuuf today, but the ops complained that i was using the wrong channels for a long time15:32
murthybrb going to restart15:32
philinuxzniavre_: just found this http://www.zdnet.com/ubuntu-13-04-raring-ringtail-beta-1-preview-7000012602/15:37
BluesKajyes murthy,  offtopic means exactly that , if you want to talk about your cat , that's fine , just discuss kubuntu issues in the proper support channels ...very simple15:38
BluesKajI'm guilty of it as well tho , and have been reminded now and then , butthere's no point complaining when you're in the wrong15:40
philinuxBluesKaj: correct - thats the whole point of the topic coming up when u join a channel15:41
BluesKajeven this discussion is technically offtopic :)15:42
philinuxlol indeed15:43
ryeHi, anybody got an Aspire One netbook with ath5k card somewhere?15:55
MoPacHi asll.  I'm trying to diagnose pm problems (particularly hibernate) on my Raring-running Vaio F series laptop.  Can't resume from suspend (kciks down to boot).  Can't hibernate in the first place (experiences apparent kernel panic, locks up with black screen and blinking lock lights)16:16
MoPacAny help appreciated16:16
MoPacI'm running 3.8.0-12 (extra)16:17
philinuxMoPac: run ubuntu-bug linux to report the bug16:18
MoPacIt's auto-reported a couple of times already on resume, and I've added detail16:19
MoPacBut I'm wondering if there might be a workaround out ther e-- I had some similar problems with Quantal that I was able to fix myself16:19

Kajoverhey.. i cannot open libreoffice (writer) from the sidebar but from terminal instead.19:25
Kajoverterminal output: javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment! Warning: failed to read path from javaldx19:26
Kajoverah yes.. is there a way to fix that?19:31
alankilaGetting some nice text rendering out of my ubuntu: https://bel.fi/alankila/lcd/lwn.png19:34
alankilahacked pixman yesterday and today to employ a technique called alpha correction. It's now good enough that all cairo-based applications can use it, though it throws gpu acceleration away I guess.19:36
alankilait's also completely unacceptable and unmergeable for any practical purpose and in fact inferior to solving the problem properly. But in am imperfect world you take what you can get, and this hack has some benefits.19:39
alankilathe real solution, unfortunately, requires applications to be written from ground up unless I can convince some minds that this method will never fly.19:40
geomyidae_I really like how Ubuntu renders things now.19:44
geomyidae_I can't stand mac or windows font rendering.19:44
alankilaone likes what one sees, I suppose. I use somewhat more objective arguments such as the fact that linux font rendering pipeline has no gamma correction, and this causes alpablending to not really work correctly.19:47
alankilaand that causes a lot of kludges all over the stack, the worst example is known as the infinality patchset which goes to individual glyph level trying to fix them up with some algorithms that I did not bother to study19:47
alankilathe difference is visible in this sample rendering I made last year: https://bel.fi/alankila/pixman/fontscol.png19:49
alankilathe above is the gamma-aware renderer, the bottom is the default renderer. As can be observed, hopefully, ignoring gamma generates a dark halo around every glyph and this is an artifact. It can make text very difficult to read.19:49
alankilaYou can see here a prime example of very difficult to read text in an artificial example: https://bel.fi/alankila/lcd/sample.png and again, the example is artificial but shows what it means for text legibility.19:50
alankilain addition to causing these issues, the ignored gamma causes LCD text to have color fringing or tint, and causes curves in glyphs to appear dirty or smudgy, because they are much darker than they should be.19:51
