magespawni think there is a way to do it without the windows disk08:25
Kilosif it doesnt boot?08:25
Kilosthen you will need to help him08:26
magespawnwill need to google that08:29
Kilosi thought you gotta use a cd and then remove the linux partition first08:31
Kilosnever done an uninstall08:31
Kilosya man will need to go that route because win dont see the ext partition08:32
Kilosso it will have to repart the drive where linux is08:33
Kiloswhat a painful job08:33
magespawnyou remove the linux partition using a gparted disk, then reconfigure the boot loader i think08:40

charl__do any of you guys/girls use so-called "cloud storage" (dropbox, ubuntu one, etc)?17:50
charl__am watching a video about encfs, looks very handy17:51
charl__i don't really use those services though, i use gpg+rsync+ssh which works pretty well for me17:52
Kilosi used ubuntuone a coupla times17:54
charl__i wonder what the security is like on ubuntu one, it seems like most of these services the security leaves much to be desired17:59
Kilos? got nothing that needs securing18:03
charl__ok that's easy then :)18:03
Kiloslol yeah18:03
charl__but that's not the case for most people though18:03

James-n7Yello20:51
James-n7so I'm also upgrading to windows 7... need to back up... but upon trying to install ubuntu, I resized my partition to 490gb, and its a 1.4 tb hard drive... How do i make it normal again? :(20:53
charl__James-n7: i don't understand completely21:10
charl__you are installing windows721:10
charl__but you are trying to install ubuntu?21:11
charl__you resized a partition and you want to revert to a "normal" condition21:11
James-n7lol, ok, so i was installing ubuntu on my hdd, but it froze during resizing partition... now i can only use 490gb out of my 1500gb21:11
James-n7this was a while ago21:11
charl__ok, so it resized your windows ntfs partition from 1500gb to 490gb?21:12
James-n7yes ! :D21:12
charl__but the installation failed21:12
charl__and now you want to... resize the partition back ?21:12
James-n7no, its an external hard drive :)21:12
charl__ok now i'm confused21:13
charl__you were trying to install ubuntu on an external hard drive21:13
charl__in principle that's fine, as long as you can boot from it21:13
charl__but you resized an existing ntfs partition on the external hard drive?21:13
James-n7look, the point is, i want full use of my external hard drive, not just 490 gb :)21:13
charl__ok, so you want to resize an ntfs partition on an external hard drive from 490gb to 1500gb21:14
charl__sorry i know this is frustrating but if you want help you need to explain your problem in detail :)21:14
James-n7ntfs? Sorry, ur chatting to a noob here lol21:14
charl__the existing 490gb partition i mean (assuming it is ntfs if you were using windows), it doesn't matter which filesystem type it is21:15
charl__this is an ubuntu community/support channel so the best i can do is provide you with an ubuntu solution21:16
James-n7im using windows yes :) Theres nothing on my hard drive though, just movies and games etc. no ubuntu or anything :) I wanted to resize it back to its origial size21:16
charl__there is a tool called 21:16
charl__sorry pressed enter by accident :)21:16
charl__there is a tool called "gparted", it can resize partitions21:16
charl__http://gparted.sourceforge.net/display-doc.php?name=help-manual#gparted-resize-partition21:16
James-n7without formatting?21:16
charl__i can't say i've ever tried it before, especially not with ntfs21:17
charl__resizing partitions can be tricky, although you are trying to grow it, not shrink it, so that should be relatively safe21:18
James-n7lol ok... just hope it doesnt format, otherwise ill have a heart attack, my lifes work is on there lol21:18
charl__you should have two copies of all your important data as a rule of thumb21:18
charl__this is somewhat old but: http://www.howtoforge.com/partitioning_with_gparted21:18
James-n7this gparted does work on windows right?21:19
charl__there is a bunch more howtos and documents if you google21:19
charl__i have absolutely no idea, this is an ubuntu channel :)21:19
charl__for windows support, i'm sure there are other channels21:19
James-n7true, but its main function is too back up my computer, because all my computer data is going to be wiped, and if my hdd data is wiped before i format, then going to delay things hecticly :) but anyways, as long as i can repartition :) Sorry to bother with this, i just thought this was ubuntu related as i partitioned my drive with ubuntu... as i said, major noob here21:21
James-n7thank you for your help char121:21
James-n7*charl21:22
charl__ah i see21:22
charl__no problem, glad to be of assistance :)21:22
James-n7might i ask how i can uninstall ubuntu off a pc?21:24
charl__you can't really uninstall, but you can install something else over it21:24
charl__basically you have three things: a boot loader (grub or equivalent) and two partitions, a regular partition and a swap partition21:25
charl__you can also choose to have more partitions of course but on a "standard" setup21:25
charl__you can easily install any other operating system by simply removing the two partitions or installing something else over them21:25
charl__or even remove them and resize another partition, like a windows partition21:26
charl__however, the "tricky" part is getting the boot loader out of your MBR21:26
charl__the easiest way is to install something else over it21:26
charl__usually, when i do a reinstall, i start "clean"21:26
charl__i'm sure there will be some guides on how to remove grub on the internet though21:27
James-n7i installed ubuntu along side windows 7 :)21:27
charl__i'm sure there would be ways of doing it, just google around a bit, but i can't say i have personal experience in this regard21:27
charl__but as always, before doing anything, make sure you have complete backups :)21:28
charl__the easiest might be to just reinstall windows for example21:28
charl__but you can always do that as a "last resort" if things get messy21:28
charl__as long as you have backups, that is ;)21:28
James-n7thanks charl :)21:28
charl__np anytime!21:28
James-n7could i format my hdd> would this get rid of the split partitions?21:29
charl__well there are two things: repartitioning and reformatting21:30
charl__the easiest way is usually removing all the partitions and creating one big partition in its place21:31
charl__then formatting the new parittion21:31
James-n7all i want is to get rid of this split in my partition... if i have to format to get rid of it, i'll do it :)21:31
charl__but then of course you lose all data on your existing partitions21:31
James-n7thats alright, i will back up :)21:31
charl__ok, that might be the easiest and safest21:31
charl__resizing a partition is possible with a tool like gparted21:31
charl__but resizing is a technically a "tricky" business21:32
James-n7ok cool :) Will try that rather, thanks very much fro your help charl :)21:32
charl__i think tools like gparted does it fairly well though21:32
James-n7indeed... 21:32
charl__always glad to help21:32
