mary_I can't get unity to come up with any of the nvidia proprietary options. Gnome backup is fine and the drivers are running as I can bring up nvidia-settings without error. 13.04 with Geforce 7300 GS01:12
mary_Any Ideas?01:12
mary_All was fine until switch to 13.0401:14
BluesKajmary_, I think nthe nvidia-current driver should work with your 7300 , install it then reboot01:14
BluesKajin the terminal , sudo apt-get install nvidia-current  , mary_01:16
captineinstalling 13.04 to see if my blue mic will work reliably.  anyone here tried 13.04 and needed to go back to older version?01:16
BluesKajmary_, then reboot01:17
mary_I've done that for each of the proprietary options including nvidia-current from the update manager and rebooted each time only to find no title or unity when logging into default ubuntu. I can control-alt-del and logout then successfully log in the the gnome fallback.01:19
BluesKajmary_, how old is your pc , unity doesn't run well on pcs with RAM under 1G01:20
BluesKajgnome is more stable and usable on older pcs01:21
mary_I can also right do right click operations on the blank screen. Just no bars. Dual core AMD with 4GB.01:21
mary_64 bit version running01:22
BluesKajhmm, then , "houston we have a problem" , mary_  I really can't understand what the issue might be. Have you checked the logs01:23
BluesKajperhaps nomodeset01:24
BluesKaj!nomodeset | mary_01:24
ubottumary_: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter01:24
mary_Just to be clear, this is my daughters machine. I'm not mary. I,m Scott her dad and resident computer nut.01:25
mary_I,m=I'm01:26
BluesKajyou put linux on your daughter's pc ...heh so did I , and she loves it , scott , mary_ :)01:27
mary_I't all she has ever known.01:27
mary_i't=Its01:27
BluesKajbut odd that the -current driver isn't booting to the login gui01:28
mary_login is good desktop is no bars01:28
mary_I I chose a Gnome fallback session all is ok.01:29
BluesKajmy old geforce 7600 ran great on kde til it died of natural causes a few months back01:29
mary_Most of her games are educational and POCAP windows games under wine.01:30
mary_POCAP=POPCAP01:30
BluesKajscott , I think gnome is your best bet , unity is buggy for older cards from what I've seen so far01:31
BluesKajmary_, ^01:31
mary_Daddy's in the doghouse right now for upgrading and losing unity which she likes a great deal.01:31
BluesKajunity is nice windoew dressing but gnome is a functional and proven desktop01:32
mary_It's what she is used to. She's only 5. But quite adept.01:33
BluesKajcool01:37
mary_I suppose Cairo dock might be an option as well but the geek in me wants Unity to work. Does the no modeset option even make sense if its booting to lightdm.01:37
BluesKajmary_, no if it's booting to lightdm then perhaps the default nouveau driver is your best bet. it's really quite a mature and versatile driver for most nvidia cards and should run Unity just fine.01:40
BluesKajNouveau is normally the default driver for nvidia cards on a new install , before any any proprietary "additional driver"'s are enabled01:43
mary_Last time i tried it the POPCAP wine games suffered a great deal. Time for another go I suppose. Thanks, hopefully this is only temporary if I experience stutters in her games.01:46
BluesKajScott , not being much of a gamer my experience there is really lacking so games are out of my area of expertise01:49
BluesKajhey guys give us a hand here , stop lurking and join in !01:50
BluesKaj:P)01:50
BluesKajthe ubuntu+1 community is MIA01:51
captinehas anyone been able to get a successful bootable disk from 13.04 daily builds01:56
BluesKajyes , most have captine , unfortunately I'm not one of them01:57
lunitikcaptine: Yes, they have been very stable for me01:57
BluesKaji have the amd64 HW recognition freeze problem01:58
BluesKajubiquity just stops ans spins at the partitioning phase01:59
dr_willisHowdy all..05:45
dr_willisanyone else notice the little spring-to-open a folder delay a bit so short in 13.04 nautilus? i can barely  drag/drop without accidently opening folders05:46
jacobwI dist-upgrade'd yesterday and now I have a phantom display to the right of my laptop display (1440*900) of 1024*768 which I can disable is still detected08:58
WaltherHello! Not getting a proper DE (unity) running, only partially. In Xorg.0.log, [    18.455] (EE) Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0)09:55
WaltherI have nvidia-current installed09:55
kjeldahlWalther: nv is not the nvidia module; Nvidia's module is named "nvidia".10:12
kjeldahlnv is an open source alternative, with limited 3d support.10:12
jacobwRun 'nvidia-xconfig'10:14

zAo^How can I get the IM menu back?14:32
jacobwIs there a bug tracking the launcher losing track of LO windows?16:13
jacobwI see it most commonly with Writer, perhaps that's because what I use most often, but with Calc and Impress too.16:13
WaltherHi! I'm not getting a proper unity session running. On dpkg-reconfigure compiz, i get /var/lib/dpkg/info/compiz.config: 1: /var/lib/dpkg/info/compiz.config: [general]: not found16:37
bazhangin 13.04?16:37
WaltherYup, in 13.0416:46
bazhangWalther, then please keep the questions in this channel, as #ubuntu is only for releases up to 12.1016:47
Waltheryeah, the thing is, i had the exact same problem with 12.10 as well, and I upgraded to raring as a last resort to try fix it16:51
WaltherBut yeah, help appreciated16:51

WaltherHi! I'm not getting a proper unity session running. On dpkg-reconfigure compiz, i get /var/lib/dpkg/info/compiz.config: 1: /var/lib/dpkg/info/compiz.config: [general]: not found17:53
WaltherAny ideas on what may be causing this?18:00
maxbWalther: That sounds .... odd. Maybe pastebin the contents of the file named in the error?18:01
maxbHmm, huh, the one on y system looks odd too18:02
maxb* my18:02
Walthermaxb: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5623075/18:02
Waltherbut yeah, I'm getting a full-res desktop but no panels / unity18:02
maxbWWhat on earth...18:02
Waltherbut otoh i *can* launch terminals with ctrl-alt-t18:03
maxbMy file is the same as yours, but it's *supposed* to be a shell script !!!!!18:03
Waltherand the terminals, oddly enough, get decorated bars18:03
Walthercompositing works, i can move the windows18:04
Waltherbut e.g. virtual desktops don't work (can't change between) and I get no panels / unity18:04
maxbSo, regarding that file, the compiz package is doing something dumb18:05
maxbHowever, since my system seems to be running Unity fine, I don't think that specifically is the cause of the problem18:05
WaltherI also see in Xorg.0.log [    14.935] (EE) Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0)18:05
Waltherbut that shouldn't perhaps cause anything as I get a full-res view18:06
Waltherno low-graphics mode18:06
maxbPerhaps you could try executing 'unity --replace' in a terminal and seeing if it logs anything interesting18:07
WaltherWhat is the process / launcher for just the modern version of "gnome-panels", as in, the unity panels service18:07
WaltherHmm. Unity --replace causes the decorated bars and menus to dissappear, and makes me unable to interact with any windows18:10
Waltherwhere are unity's logs?18:10
WaltherHelp still needed and greatly appreciated ;)18:18
Waltherin .xsession-errors there's a line "compiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'opengl' not loaded.18:19
WaltherI wonder if this has anything to do with my issues18:19
maxbUnfortunately you've exhausted my knowledge of unity-related debugging18:21
Walthereep.18:23
WaltherOh, nice18:23
Waltherdconf reset -f /org/compiz/ && setsid unity18:23

ironhalikthats the problem :)22:08
Kow_ironhalik, um what version of fglrx are you trying to build?22:31
MoPacI'm having a lot of trouble prioritizing a package origin in raring -- could someone help with sources.list and /apt/preferences ?  I want a ppa version INSTEAD of a universe version.  But even after putting the ppa at the top of sources.list and putting the ppa URL as a pin in a preferences file, I can't elevate it over the universe version22:43
Kow_MoPac, I would use apt-add-repository instead of modifying sources.list yourself22:52
MoPacWell, doing that just created a sources.d file22:52
Kow_i always add a ppa with add-apt-repository and then sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade22:53
MoPacBut it shouldn't matter, right?  In any case, this guide was leading me to believe that it was important to put it first in sources.list http://askubuntu.com/questions/135339/assign-highest-priority-to-my-local-repository22:53
=== Kow_ is now known as Kow
MoPacKow_: But the problem here is that Ubuntu still wants to use the Universe version22:54
KowMoPac, is the version in the PPA older than universe?22:54
MoPacKow: It's hard to tell -- it probably is.  I want to force it to use the ppa22:54
MoPacIn other words, when I apt-cache policy libreoffice, and the two sources come up, I want the "500" next to the ppa to be a higher number, and I want that one on top22:56
MoPac(in fact, I guess I want the number to be at least 1001, so it will force even if version older)22:58
KowMoPac, did you set the Pin-Priority in /etc/apt/preferences?23:00
