Need your help with diagnosing/solving a printer problem - my workstation running 12.04 refuses to print to our office's LaserJet. It worked fine for months, but recently stopped. I've restarted the cups service, rebooted my machine, but it still doesn't work. [07:13] The printer status shown in the KDE printer configuration module usually drops back to [ ] Activated (so it's not) after showing "Processing, Rendering" for a while [07:14] If i reactivate it, sometimes it starts printing after several minutes (!), only to go back to square one, or it just doesn't print at all. Do the 310 drivers help with this? Nouveau kinda sucks performance-wise for me and I like desktop effects... [19:49] hi I can run the libreoffice with sudo but not without it [19:49] what give [19:51] aPpYe, which nvidia card? [19:51] BluesKaj, 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV44 [Quadro NVS 285] (rev a1) [19:52] Sorush, why would you ever use sudo with libreoffice in the first place [19:52] also, I am going to be building a couple of systems with geforce 610's and was wondering if I am gonna run into this issue with those as well. [19:52] bazhang: I just thought I try it as the alternative isn't working.. I must have messed up my chmod and chown [19:53] 610s are running well with the 310 , even the 310 experimentals iirc , aPpYe [19:54] BluesKaj, well is the 310 driver gonna help me with the quadro card on this computer? [19:54] it should , it's an onboard , right ? [19:55] noaXess, pci-e [19:55] oops. I meant no, pci-e [19:55] lol [19:55] hehe, ok aPpYe then it should be fine with the 310 [19:56] the bug is frustrating, because it takes a couple of days for the problem to be noticeable ... [19:56] I will try the 310 and see if it fixes things. [19:56] I'm using an entry level pcie 8400gs with the 310 [19:57] it's in additional drivers [19:57] BluesKaj, the nvidia-experimental-310 package in quantal? [19:58] aPpYe, why, what is the recommended ? [19:58] well, nvidia-current installs 304 ... [19:59] ahh , ok, because I'm on 13.04 , with the 310 driver [20:01] do you reboot your machine every day? the problem is hardly noticeabe if you do. For me, when I leave the machine on for several days, I see the Xorg process consuming a cpu core and it's shared memory climbs and climbs... Killing plasma-desktop relieves the cpu useage, for another couple days, but the memory useage continues to climb. After 5 days, the memory useage for Xorg process is over 2 gigs. [20:02] I will see how 310 helps though for now. [20:02] fixed it the folder bin had changed to bin from .bin [20:03] aPpYe, sometimes I'll not boot for a few days but i haven't noticed any creeping load usage === yofel_ is now known as yofel [20:04] BluesKaj, okay thanks. Hopefully the 310 helps me then. If not, I will wait for 13.04 and suck it up for now. I don't want to beta test on this machine. [20:06] aPpYe, actually 13.04 is already quite stable , if you continue to have load problems it might be worth a try [20:07] aPpYe, unless of course you are on the job with critical data at risk [20:07] oops , too late :) [20:35] BluesKaj: I, too, am finding 13.04 to be quite stabel. [20:35] It's better than my spelling! :-) [20:36] yeah , surprising since I had so much trouble at first, DarthFrog [20:37] :-) [20:37] You do tend to bleed on the cutting edge. [20:38] Wow, official support of non-LTS versions is being cut in half, to nine months. [20:39] I'm going to dd this partition into the preceding ones, both / and /home to get ready for 13.10 in a few weeks [20:39] As of the April 25 release date of 13.04. [20:39] yesh , I heard [20:39] Why on earth would you start with 13.10 so soon? [20:40] the compromise between 6month releases and rolling release [20:41] I would hope they would increase the frquency of the LTS releases. [20:42] just for fun , DarthFrog, I always have a stable version as the main OS and all the critical stuff , is on an external drive anyway , so I hava redundancy [20:43] * DarthFrog notes BluesKaj has a curious definititon of fun.
