flopyou mean to open the file on my SD with other live cd?00:00
holsteinflop: if you think its lubuntu related.. that will let you know if it is or not00:01
holsteinthough, it still could be some issue with your current user and group permissions00:01
holsteinwhat would i do? maybe make another user and test00:02
holsteinsudo chown or sudo chmod should work00:02
flopthe thing is that I cannot even change anything with sudo chmod which is weird00:04
flopand I'm in the same group as the original file located in Downloads00:05
holsteinflop: can you run sudo -i ?00:05
flopbug?00:05
holsteinflop: i dont know yet.. i dont think so, since its not a problem for anyone else, or me00:05
flopsudo -i makes me root00:06
holsteinflop: then, open that file with something00:09
holsteinflop: you can email me the file if you like, and i'll try and get it to "break"00:10
flopok, it open with leafpad00:10
holsteinflop: i would try as another user..00:10
holsteinflop: or try with a live cd.. try something different00:11
flopok00:11
flopquestion is, does evince need write permission to open a file?00:12
holsteinflop: not that im aware of00:12
flopthe only difference is that the original file has write permission on group, but again I cannot set it with chmod00:13
holsteinhttp://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/01/ubuntu-tip-change-ownership-of-files-folders/00:15
holsteinflop: sudo chown flop:flop /path/to/file for example00:15
holsteini think you are doing it differently00:15
flopI did, still not working :(00:16
holsteinflop: and as another user?00:17
holsteinor live CD?00:17
flopok I'll try live usb of lubuntu00:17
flopbbiab00:17
flopok it's not opening but that was weird00:37
flopnow*00:37
flopI booted in live sb of lubuntu and I could open it from the SD00:38
flopThen back to my hdd version, still the same00:39
holsteinflop: so, you know its *not* lubuntu.. its your install00:39
holsteinwhat would i do? try as another user00:39
flopthen I changed the name to a.pdf and it opened! bt why??00:39
flopbut*00:39
flopif I leave the file to a it won't open only on the SD but will open in /Downloads00:40
flopto "a"00:40
flopwithout .pdf extension00:41
holstein?00:41
holsteinit'll need that extention00:41
flopbut the file opens without extension in /Downloads with evince00:41
holsteinflop: i woudnt over think it.. if its a pdf, give it the .pdf extention00:42
flopok. Good to know it's working at least. I guess I was the only being lazy just to name the file "a"00:43
floponly = one00:43
flopand thanks for helping me holstein  :)00:43
holsteinsure. anytime00:43
ubuloveHi all02:46
ubuloveI have a desktop pc 4 years old with 1GB of ram DDR2. What do you suggest ? Installing Lubuntu and stay with 1GB of ram or buy more DDR2 ram ?02:47
holsteinubulove: install lubuntu.. if you want more ram afterwards, go for it02:50
ubuloveholstein: hmmm! Do i need more ram for lubuntu from your own experience?02:50
Unit193What do you plan on doing?02:51
ubuloveSurfing over the net, talking in skype with cam, install LibreOffice and firefox.02:52
holsteinubulove: try the free option.. which is installing without buying ram.. then, try with $30 worth of ram if you decide you need it02:52
ubuloveholstein: yeap you are right.02:53
ubuloveholstein: LibreOffice is not included in Lubuntu. What office is included if u know?02:55
holsteinubulove: you can install libreoffice easily02:56
ubuloveholstein: right now am from my 6 years old laptop, my father had this desktop pc and he didnt use it at all02:57
ubulovethats why am thinking to use it without spending any money on it.02:57
ubuloveand I didnt know lubuntu exist, and i loved lubuntu more than ubuntu by canonical.02:58
holstein!lubuntu02:58
ubottulubuntu is Ubuntu with LXDE instead of !GNOME as desktop environment, which makes it extremely lightweight. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu - /join #lubuntu for lubuntu support.02:59
ubulovehehehe yeah i know it's still ubuntu. but i dont like unity :P02:59
holsteinlubuntu is an official ubuntu distro, but its a community project.. not a canonnical one so much..02:59
ubuloveits recognized by canonical03:01
ubulovethats good !03:01
holsteinubulove: its more than that.. its an official distro, as i said,, its just not directly supported by canonnical03:01
holsteinits a community project03:01
ubuloveholstein: I think I will register a nickname here. I loved this network. Every time I have a problem or something and I'm here I get satisfied.03:02
ubuloveholstein: do you know if I will be able to connect through internet from a USB-WiFi running on lubuntu ?03:03
ubulovebecause ethernet isnt available till my room03:04
holsteinubulove: try it live03:05
holsteinubulove: most wifi devices are supported or can easily be supported03:05
ubulovealright, thanks man03:05
ubuloveam going off now, thanks for your help, really appreciate!03:06
ubulove05:06AM here in Cyprus03:06

flop*chromium03:56
flopsome of the videos play in youtube while others say to install adobe flasg player04:00
Unit193You can install adobe-flashplugin.04:00
Unit193!info adobe-flashplugin partner04:00
ubottuadobe-flashplugin (source: adobe-flashplugin): Adobe Flash Player plugin version 11. In component main, is optional. Version 11.2.202.275-0precise1 (partner), package size 6443 kB, installed size 17162 kB (Only available for i386; amd64)04:00
flophow do I install it? from command line?04:03
flopsays: adobe-flashplugin has no installation candidate04:04
holsteinflop: i would search a package manage for flash04:05
holsteinflop: i use google-chrome, since it has the most current version of flash for linux04:05
flopin the softwarelubuntu software center there is flash plugin but says it's for mozilla04:06
holsteinwell, it is04:07
holsteini dont think that means exclusively for ff04:07
bigmath8636_hi i have a question i am doing a dual boot with windows 7 on a 2TB hard drive and wanted to know about how much to give to my linux06:33
hateballbigmath8636_: That all depends what you intend to do with it. If you plan to install many applications, and/or store user data on the Linux partitions06:36
bigmath8636_in worst case scenario let's say i will how much maximum would be enough06:37
bigmath8636_in my guess 1 TB seems like to much for linux witch is still pretty light een with updates and distro upgrade06:38
bigmath8636_*which *even06:39
bigmath8636_sorry for the typo06:39
bigmath8636_would 100 gb be enough06:40
bigmath8636_without user data just software06:41
Unit193Sure.06:42
bigmath8636_thank you for your help06:45
duanedesignI am helping a user install Lubuntu. Is the installer much different then UBuntu10:32
duanedesignmainly is setting up a dual boot system fairly straight forward10:32
inductiveloadduanedesign: i don't know what the ubuntu installer is like these days, but dual boot setup is relatively straightforward10:45
inductiveloadyou can just say "install Lubuntu alongside OtherOS", choose what proportion of the disk you want for each and the rest is handled automagically10:47
