[00:00] you mean to open the file on my SD with other live cd? [00:01] flop: if you think its lubuntu related.. that will let you know if it is or not [00:01] though, it still could be some issue with your current user and group permissions [00:02] what would i do? maybe make another user and test [00:02] sudo chown or sudo chmod should work [00:04] the thing is that I cannot even change anything with sudo chmod which is weird [00:05] and I'm in the same group as the original file located in Downloads [00:05] flop: can you run sudo -i ? [00:05] bug? [00:05] flop: i dont know yet.. i dont think so, since its not a problem for anyone else, or me [00:06] sudo -i makes me root [00:09] flop: then, open that file with something [00:10] flop: you can email me the file if you like, and i'll try and get it to "break" [00:10] ok, it open with leafpad [00:10] flop: i would try as another user.. [00:11] flop: or try with a live cd.. try something different [00:11] ok [00:12] question is, does evince need write permission to open a file? [00:12] flop: not that im aware of [00:13] the only difference is that the original file has write permission on group, but again I cannot set it with chmod [00:15] http://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/01/ubuntu-tip-change-ownership-of-files-folders/ [00:15] flop: sudo chown flop:flop /path/to/file for example [00:15] i think you are doing it differently [00:16] I did, still not working :( [00:17] flop: and as another user? [00:17] or live CD? [00:17] ok I'll try live usb of lubuntu [00:17] bbiab [00:37] ok it's not opening but that was weird [00:37] now* [00:38] I booted in live sb of lubuntu and I could open it from the SD [00:39] Then back to my hdd version, still the same [00:39] flop: so, you know its *not* lubuntu.. its your install [00:39] what would i do? try as another user [00:39] then I changed the name to a.pdf and it opened! bt why?? [00:39] but* [00:40] if I leave the file to a it won't open only on the SD but will open in /Downloads [00:40] to "a" [00:41] without .pdf extension [00:41] ? [00:41] it'll need that extention [00:41] but the file opens without extension in /Downloads with evince [00:42] flop: i woudnt over think it.. if its a pdf, give it the .pdf extention [00:43] ok. Good to know it's working at least. I guess I was the only being lazy just to name the file "a" [00:43] only = one [00:43] and thanks for helping me holstein :) [00:43] sure. anytime [02:46] Hi all [02:47] I have a desktop pc 4 years old with 1GB of ram DDR2. What do you suggest ? Installing Lubuntu and stay with 1GB of ram or buy more DDR2 ram ? [02:50] ubulove: install lubuntu.. if you want more ram afterwards, go for it [02:50] holstein: hmmm! Do i need more ram for lubuntu from your own experience? [02:51] What do you plan on doing? [02:52] Surfing over the net, talking in skype with cam, install LibreOffice and firefox. [02:52] ubulove: try the free option.. which is installing without buying ram.. then, try with $30 worth of ram if you decide you need it [02:53] holstein: yeap you are right. [02:55] holstein: LibreOffice is not included in Lubuntu. What office is included if u know? [02:56] ubulove: you can install libreoffice easily [02:57] holstein: right now am from my 6 years old laptop, my father had this desktop pc and he didnt use it at all [02:57] thats why am thinking to use it without spending any money on it. [02:58] and I didnt know lubuntu exist, and i loved lubuntu more than ubuntu by canonical. [02:58] !lubuntu [02:59] lubuntu is Ubuntu with LXDE instead of !GNOME as desktop environment, which makes it extremely lightweight. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu - /join #lubuntu for lubuntu support. [02:59] hehehe yeah i know it's still ubuntu. but i dont like unity :P [02:59] lubuntu is an official ubuntu distro, but its a community project.. not a canonnical one so much.. [03:01] its recognized by canonical [03:01] thats good ! [03:01] ubulove: its more than that.. its an official distro, as i said,, its just not directly supported by canonnical [03:01] its a community project [03:02] holstein: I think I will register a nickname here. I loved this network. Every time I have a problem or something and I'm here I get satisfied. [03:03] holstein: do you know if I will be able to connect through internet from a USB-WiFi running on lubuntu ? [03:04] because ethernet isnt available till my room [03:05] ubulove: try it live [03:05] ubulove: most wifi devices are supported or can easily be supported [03:05] alright, thanks man [03:06] am going off now, thanks for your help, really appreciate! [03:06] 05:06AM here in Cyprus [03:56] is there a flash player in lubuntu chrome? [03:56] *chromium [04:00] some of the videos play in youtube while others say to install adobe flasg player [04:00] You can install adobe-flashplugin. [04:00] !info adobe-flashplugin partner [04:00] adobe-flashplugin (source: adobe-flashplugin): Adobe Flash Player plugin version 11. In component main, is optional. Version 11.2.202.275-0precise1 (partner), package size 6443 kB, installed size 17162 kB (Only available for i386; amd64) [04:03] how do I install it? from command line? [04:04] says: adobe-flashplugin has no installation candidate [04:05] flop: i would search a package manage for flash [04:05] flop: i use google-chrome, since it has the most current version of flash for linux [04:06] in the softwarelubuntu software center there is flash plugin but says it's for mozilla [04:07] well, it is [04:07] i dont think that means exclusively for ff [06:33] hi i have a question i am doing a dual boot with windows 7 on a 2TB hard drive and wanted to know about how much to give to my linux [06:36] bigmath8636_: That all depends what you intend to do with it. If you plan to install many applications, and/or store user data on the Linux partitions [06:37] in worst case scenario let's say i will how much maximum would be enough [06:38] in my guess 1 TB seems like to much for linux witch is still pretty light een with updates and distro upgrade [06:39] *which *even [06:39] sorry for the typo [06:40] would 100 gb be enough [06:41] without user data just software [06:42] Sure. [06:45] thank you for your help [10:32] I am helping a user install Lubuntu. Is the installer much different then UBuntu [10:32] mainly is setting up a dual boot system fairly straight forward [10:45] duanedesign: i don't know what the ubuntu installer is like these days, but dual boot setup is relatively straightforward [10:47] you can just say "install Lubuntu alongside OtherOS", choose what proportion of the disk you want for each and the rest is handled automagically [10:48] thank you friend [10:48] chers [10:48] wc [10:48] ugh/wc === gstudent2 is now known as germanstudent [20:42] hello there [20:43] I would really need some help here if anyone is available [20:44] so heres's what happened... === IboS_ is now known as IboS [20:45] I was using gparted live CD to take about 100GB (320GB total that lubuntu was using, the whole disk) to install windows 7 there, just to be able to install steam and run some games. [20:45] so gparted was doing it's thing and resizing the partition, when my laptop overheated and it went down. [20:46] I tried to fix it again using gparted live cd to correct the errors, but down again it went. [20:46] so I'm really in a mess here..
