peawormsworthI think I see a bug in Unity. Where should I report it?08:24
peawormsworth* for raring.08:24
bcbc2peawormsworth: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+filebug08:53
bcbc2peawormsworth: or better: ubuntu-bug unity (so it collects your machine specs)08:54
bcbc2https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/FilingBugs08:55
peawormsworthbcbc2: thanks. but i dont think its machine specific. unity works fine, it just displays and incorrect icons in some cases. and i verified on 2 machines.08:56
peawormsworththx for links.08:57
bcbc2peawormsworth: it's easier to let the tool collect the data upfront than having to go back and get it. But either way...08:58

ikoniaNaruto_Xboy: ever considered using the stable release as you don't seem to really understand what you are doing ?14:23
Naruto_Xboyi have install ubuntu 12.10 this stable14:24
ikoniaNaruto_Xboy: ok, so why not usin 12.10 if it's stable ?14:24
Naruto_Xboybut i update to 13.04 , i can't turn off nvidia card14:24
ikoniathen go back to 12.1014:25
Naruto_XboyI want to explore the new version14:25
ikoniayes, but you don't seem to be able to deal with a version that is unstable14:25
ikoniaso using a stable version may allow you to actually use your machine14:25
eelco_Hi guys, quick question on Kubuntu 13.04 (I was directed here from the #kubuntu channel). I'm testing out the beta and noticed that Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't take me to a shell any more, where this worked out of the box on Kubuntu 12.10. I can switch to Ctrl+Alt+F1 up to Ctrl+Alt+F6, but the screen just goes blank (receives no input), Ctrl+Alt+F7 get's me back to my desktop as usual though. Both Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and  sudo14:25
eelco_/etc/init.d/lightdm stop  exited the display manager, but didn't show a shell. Do any of you know if the default behaviour has changed, or how I can boot in to a shell outside of X now?14:25
ikoniaeelco_: you can boot into single user mode for a shell14:26
Naruto_Xboytôi nên quay lại 12.10 và chờ bản ổn định 13.0414:27
Naruto_XboyI should go back to the stable 12.10 and wait for 13.0414:27
eelco_@ikonia - thank you. Did a quick Google, is this the way to do it? "Append the letter S (or word Single) to the end of the (kernel) line in grub"14:28
ikoniaeelco_: "single" yes14:29
ikoniaeelco_: append single14:29
Naruto_Xboythank you ikonia ;)14:29
eelco_@ikonia - thank you - Do you know if that Single User environment lets me run a Cuda program like Ctrl-Alt+F1 did allow me to before?14:30
Naruto_Xboytime to 13:04 release14:30
ikoniaeelco_: it's basically a standard setup, just with "single user" approach, the root user, eg: no desktop, no networking etc etc14:31
ikoniaeelco_: think of it as maintenance mode14:31
eelco_@ikonia - thank you, I will give it a try14:32
eelco_Out of curiosity, do you know why this the Ctrl + Alt + F1-6 functionality is no longer working? Was that a design decision, or is it just not working on my install?14:33
ikoniaeelco_: no idea, the #kde guys would be best to answer14:33
yofelthe tty's have nothing to do with kde though14:34
yofeleelco_: do you have any getty processes runnin?14:34
eelco_eelco@eelco-pc:~/Programs/truecrack/src$ ps faux | grep "getty"14:35

ikoniaeelco_: really - spamming the channel with that14:35
ikoniahow do you think that's going to help14:35
eelco_sorry, thought it would past as 1 line14:36

eelco_guys, you're really spamming the channel now :P14:37
eelco_@yofel - so yes, got 6 getty processes running - tty1-614:38
yofelyeah, so this should be working, and it works fine here. Not sure where else to look14:39
eelco_OK, learned a bit again :) I'll have a quick read up on getty, tty and Single User mode, might be able to debug some myself. Thanks for your help yofel and ikonia!14:41

Paddy_NIHello I decided to just the gun a little and install raring on my sisters desktop computer.. I have noticed that sound is no longer working and the card is not listed in sounds settings15:03
Paddy_NII have tried installing "pulseaudio-esound-compat" according to this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/107854315:04
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1078543 in pulseaudio (Ubuntu Raring) "[raring] Pulse audio fails to start with error 'Failed to open module "module-esound-protocol-unix": file not found'" [High,Fix released]15:04
Paddy_NII have reboot and it has still not appeared15:04
Paddy_NII have also noticed that the intel graphics performance is pretty bad15:04
ikoniaPaddy_NI: 1.) is that bug the same as yours, are you getting "file not found errors" 2.) what xorg driver is in use15:14
Paddy_NIikonia: well the bug is not identical as I think the cards may be different15:16
ikoniaPaddy_NI: do you get the "file not found" error ?15:16
Paddy_NINo file not found errors and not sure which version of xorg is in use.. this is fully up to date afaik15:16
ikoniaPaddy_NI: right so the card is different and the error is different.....why are you following a bug / fix that is totally different to your problem15:17
ikoniaPaddy_NI: I didn't ask which xorg version you where using, I asked which xorg driver is in use15:17
Paddy_NII could not find an exact duplicate15:17
ikoniaPaddy_NI: ok - so then there may not be a bug logged, just doing random things from differenet bug reports seems foolish15:17
Paddy_NIikonia: It does but in the past it has given results15:18
Paddy_NIbetter than nothing as far as I am concerned :-)15:18
ikoniaI'm sorry, I can't support that approach to debugging "pick random bug reports and just try stuff215:18
ikoniano, it's not better than nothing as it can do more damage/make problems worse/harder to fix15:18
Paddy_NIThey are not exactly random15:18
Paddy_NIIf I had chosen a random bug report then we would currently not be talking about sound right now15:19
ikoniaPaddy_NI:  it is random15:19
Paddy_NIno its not15:19
Paddy_NII think you need to read up on the definition of random15:19
ikoniaPaddy_NI: that bug is for a missing compatability module, hence the "file not found" error - as you are not getting that error, the problem is totally different15:20
Paddy_NIOkay I'm going to revert any changes I have made15:22
Paddy_NIbrb15:23
Paddy_NIikonia: I have reverted all the changes I have made, how do I get which xorg driver I am using?15:27
ikoniaPaddy_NI: look in the xorg log15:27
Paddy_NII have an intel chipset I am pretty sure that the graphics and sounds are intel too.. Going to check the log15:28
ikoniaPaddy_NI: I wasn't asking what the hardware was at this time, I was asking which xorg driver was in use15:28
Paddy_NIikonia: Yeah I know15:30
Paddy_NIHere is xorg log http://pastebin.com/MVgSRyPV15:30
ikoniaI'm not asking for the xorg log15:30
Paddy_NIIts a little confusing15:30
alankilait's X. It is the worst software in the world except for all others that try to generate working display.15:30
alankilathey are currently even worse.15:31
Paddy_NIlol15:31
ikoniathanks for the pointless comment15:31
ikoniaI'll leave you to it15:31
Paddy_NIikonia: was that directed at me?15:32
alankilano, to me, I think.15:32
ikoniacorrect15:32
alankilathe guy is just known to be pretty grumpy15:32
ikoniaI'm not grumpy at all15:32
ikoniajust not wasting time trying to resolve something with pointless comments15:32
ikonialaters15:33
Paddy_NIalankila: Yeah I see what you mean15:33
bjsniderPaddy_NI, what is the result of the dmesg command. pastebin it please15:33
bjsnideralankila, i guess you're not in the business of marketing xorg15:35
Paddy_NIbjsnider: Here it is http://paste.ubuntu.com/5640398/15:36
alankilaanyway the xorg log says something like "LoadModule" which mentions which driver it loaded by name, and generally the module initializes and produces a chatlog about it15:36
alankilabut it's not the only thing it loads, so that makes it harder to answer the question what driver is in use. But really, this is par the course with X, nothing in it is particularly user friendly.15:37
alankilabut it's better now than it has ever been before, so that's something at least.15:37
alankilaif you get "vesa" driver then that means unaccelerated fallback driver. This is all stuff you just have to know15:38
Paddy_NIOh okay.. Yeah I remember with dapper I had to specify my screens horizontal and vertical refresh rates and mouse buttons15:38
alankilaor could be fbdev also15:38
BluesKajinstall mesa-utils , then run glxinfo | grep OpenGL , the version string is your driver , alankila15:39
alankilaBluesKaj: pretty circuitous way to find that out, methinks. There got to be something better.15:40
alankilabut alas, can't think of anything15:40
BluesKajalankila:  nope it works fine , just try it15:40
Paddy_NIthis is what I got from that glxinfo http://paste.ubuntu.com/5640405/15:40
bjsniderdon't see anything wrong in dmesg, looks like the right stuff being loaded, and same with glxinfo15:41
bjsniderno messages about an audio chip being found at all in demsg though15:41
alankilaBluesKaj: I already did. While it says nvidia blah blah, I wonder if that's really the Xorg driver or just information about the 3D setup which happens to mention the driver. Let's assume for instance that I loaded vesa driver and have no 3d acceleration whatsoever. Will it still work?15:41
BluesKajPaddy_NI:  the you're using the mesa driver15:41
bjsniderwhat do you get from lsusb15:41
Paddy_NIJust no sound card listed and poor graphics performance15:41
BluesKajalankila:  I'm not assuming anything , it's supposed to work in 2D  as well afaik15:42
bjsnidergraphics performance may be due to a problem with unity or compiz at the moment15:42
Paddy_NIOh okay well I guess updates should hopefully resolve graphics performance15:43
Paddy_NI*issues15:43
bjsniderwhat does lsusb show15:43
alankilaBluesKaj: I never said you must assume this. I guess the right word is 'stipulate'. (Assumption made for sake of argument.)15:43
Paddy_NIbjsnider: The mouse, keyboard and linux foundation usb root hubs15:44
bjsniderand lspci15:44
alankilaanyway it does sound like i915 driver would be in use for Paddy, so that suggests that his stuff should just work, at least when it comes to graphics. Unless the hardware is simply very poor, I guess. I wish I knew more of this, really, but I haven't had any display trouble other than some crashes with nouveau for a long, long time.15:45
Paddy_NIbjsnider: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5640420/15:45
alankilaPaddy_NI: I can't see anything that looks like audio in the PCI hardware listing, and you say there's nonesuch also on the USB listing? This is curious. Could the audio chipset be integrated and disabled in the BIOS?15:46
bjsniderthere's no sound chip on this board i guess15:46
bjsnidercould be disabled in the bios15:46
Paddy_NIalankila: I think that would be highly unlikely as it just replaced ubuntu 12.10 with 13.0415:47
Paddy_NISound was working before15:47
alankilaPaddy_NI: so you say, but there is no sign of it15:47
Paddy_NIWell I formatted the HDD then installed the raring daily from two days ago then applied updates15:47
alankilait is also plausible that it's some USB thing and a shutdown and reboot sequence wedged the thing at the end of the USB bus until a proper poweroff. These things happen.15:48
Paddy_NIhmm15:48
Paddy_NII might power it off for a moment15:48
bjsnideris this an expansion card, onboard, or external?15:48
alankilaor it might be leftover condition from some suspend + resume. But if you can find out that it's enabled in the BIOS, and can remove battery and wait some time, and it still doesn't work, then I have absolutely no idea.15:48
Paddy_NIonboard15:48
BluesKajbjsnider:  aplay -l ?15:48
bjsniderwell that wouldn't work15:49
bjsniderthere's no alsa driver becuase there's no detected hardware15:49
Paddy_NIokay I'm going to power off brb15:49
bjsniderdo a flea power15:49
Paddy_NIokay15:49
alankilaI've had to do these battery poweroffs with laptops, these things are complicated. :-/15:49
bjsniderwhy did he do a wipe/reload15:50
alankilaand I have had usb keyboards that die in a 'sudo reboot' sequence, they must be removed and reattached because the usb host is not properly detected after a soft reboot.15:50
bjsniderhe could have upgraded15:50
alankilaI really start to hate USB15:50
alankilauniversally seriously broken15:50
bjsniderwell, maybe thunderbolt will replace it15:51
bjsnidereventually15:51
alankilaI would certainly hope so. This USB thing just has never been implemented correctly so it must go15:53
alankilasomething about it must make it impossible to implement correctly, don't know what15:54
alankilaeven my latest hardware purchase can't reliably boot from USB key, it works kinda 1/3 of the time and lately not at all.15:54
alankilatried to replace SSD by USB so I could put the SSD on a different computer that would benefit more from it... worked a few months, then BIOS decided it will never see the USB key again during bootup. I don't even.15:55
alankilaI dd'd the data from the USB key to another SSD on another box and then it booted from SSD like nothing had happened.15:56
penguin42I need to do some USB debug actually - my Sammy printer has stopped working on my main Ubuntu box but works fine on my older Mate box15:56
alankilaoh yes, and even when the USB key did boot, Linux would fail to detect it almost always... I guess the fact BIOS used it left it in some state that confused Linux about it so I had to always remove it and plug it back in during initramfs so it would find the root fs on it15:57
alankilaMight be flakiness about these new USB 3.0 things. After all, the tech is like 1 year old now only, so clearly can't expect it to work. I had much the same experience with USB 2.0 originally, and it eventually got better.15:59
alankilaI'm also a programmer so I know all about new software being broken. This stuff happens. Complexity is the enemy of working things, and everything is always so incredibly complex because it's specced by very optimistic people. Anyway, end of rant before someone bans me.16:06
Ziggy_just installed 13.04 and kde keeps crashing for me.... it screen turns black and it logs me out.. where can i find some kind of log to see whats wrong ?16:09
penguin42Ziggy_: Try /var/log/Xorg.0.log16:11
