[00:33] lubuntu wireless wont show on a laptop after install, if i run all the updates will work after ? [00:36] devilboy: You may very well need to install wireless drivers for your card. [00:36] !wireless [00:36] Wireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs [00:36] Unit193: thanks, i will need more info when am on that laptop. [01:04] hey, anyone wanna give me some quick help? [01:05] Anybodyyy [01:05] say [01:06] Hi, I installed Lubuntu through Wubi on a netbook. The installation went through [01:06] but, when i boot it up it comes up to a black screen with a login prompt. [01:06] I login but that does nothing but leave a command prompt for me [01:07] try xstart [01:07] comand: xstart [01:07] it should star xwindows [01:07] no command found [01:07] startlubuntu is the command to normally use. [01:08] Ok, I tried the start lubuntu command and it gave me a warning. [01:08] Says: Gtk WARNING cannot open display. [01:08] and back to command prompt [01:09] do you have grahic drivers instaled [01:09] Alright, so was the LiveCD fine? I'd highly recommend you not use wubi. [01:10] I would gladly switch it over entirely to Linux, its a little notebook that cant run windows correctly. But when I have tried the live CD i get the same erroe [01:10] error* [01:10] For the record, that live cd I have to use a usb for. [01:11] Since the Netbook has no disc drive. [01:11] see on google for troubleshot with your graphic card [01:12] or try some other distro [01:12] dorohoro: Or you could try to help. [01:12] Nate_Rev: What graphics card? [01:14] It would be an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3600 [01:14] On an Intel Atom N2600 processor. [01:18] any ide? [01:18] idea*? [01:18] reading on net right now [01:18] seams oter people hade same proble [01:18] whats the questin? [01:18] MMmm... That seems slightly like a problem generating card, try taking a look https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto maybe, but http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1953734 is a little dated. [01:19] holstein: Black boot, GMA3600 N2600 [01:19] anything with nomodeset? [01:22] me? [01:23] Nate_Rev: did you try it? [01:23] nomodeset? [01:23] !nomodeset [01:23] A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter [01:24] yeah, says command not found [01:24] Nate_Rev: ^^ i do it from the live CD.. [01:24] Nate_Rev: its not a command [01:25] alright, I'll start working on that. [04:01] Anyone know if it's possible to point lxdm to a second location for application shortcuts (.desktop files)? Currently I've been putting icons in /usr/share/applications/ but would like to move my custom shortcuts to an nfs mount so that additions/changes affect all users (each machine has the nfs mount) [04:02] I tried creating a symlink in /usr/share/applications/ but lxdm doesn't seem to act recursively, so the shortcuts within /usr/share/applications/shared/ don't get added [09:04] malaphus: ~/.config/applications ? === AlanChicken is now known as AlanBell === Myrtti_ is now known as Myrtti === tsimpson_ is now known as tsimpson [11:28] hello, can someone help me to find out why my 2 machines do connect wireless using Ubuntu 12.04 while they can't on Lubuntu 12.04 ? [11:35] the odd thing : if I right-click on the wifi applet in the botom bar, the bar disapears ! [13:53] hi all, lately lubuntu after receiving an update about 570kb it freezes on shutting down or rebooting. What can I do to solve/fix this ? === gstudent2 is now known as germanstudent [15:17] my Disks crashes when I try to format my ntfs disk and create an ext4+LUKS encrypted partition on it, how do I go about doing this without the gui (the password weakness thing seems to be the problem, since it crashes every time I start typing the passphrase, the program crashes) [15:31] Eino, are you doing this during installation or after? [15:48] cortman: after [15:48] it's another hdd :p [16:03] Then have a look here Eino http://gentoovps.net/encrypt-a-partition-from-the-command-line-in-gentoo-linux/ [16:04] And for a very informative and rather confusing page about encryption, see here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/System_Encryption_with_LUKS#Partitioning [16:04] Although I think the first one has the info you want [16:08] roger, I just had the second one open [16:11] cortman: how do I benchmark which encryption method is the best? or can you recommend something? I have intel phenom II x2 550 [16:15] I know little about encryption- I'm just doing the research- I always encrypted with LUKS at installation, so I can't recommend anything based on experience, but TrueCrypt seems to be pretty widely used [17:29] if someone here gives me a tip, and this someone works for maintaining or undermining security, does that count as a typ of the hat? [17:54] cerebrate: i would offer a answer if i had any idea what you are talking about === Jason is now known as noc0de [18:35] if a white hat gives you a protip does it mean you got a tip of the hat? [18:43] * cortman is clueless as well [21:08] how best and swiftest do i change keyboard layouts? [21:18] cortman & stlsaint i refer to colbert's skit 'tip of the hat, wag of the finger' [21:28] cerebrate: you can add them to shortcuts [21:29] y ty [21:29] ^^ [22:45] For the past 4 or so days, it seems that whenever Firefox is opened and browsing webpages, it freezes my computer. What I mean by freezing my computer no task is able to be performed except move the mouse cursor around. The duration to reproduce this issue varies and happens with quite a few different webpages. Seems like it happens when there's tabs opened. Was wondering if there's any logs I could check that may give me a pretty good idea of w [22:45] redderhs: i would just launch ff from the terminal and look there [22:46] i would try removing my user config from the equation.. i would try disabling plugins. flash/java [22:47] yes, I got that idea from ubuntuforums and so far it only seems like I am getting two messages come through. "Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". that message comes everytime a flash video from youtube is loading. [22:47] also: this sometimes randomly appears "NOTE: child process received `Goodbye', closing down" while the browser is still running. [22:47] what do i do? i use google-chrome, since that is the only current version of flash for linux [22:48] have you applied upgrade? "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" in a terminal [22:48] Do you have much ram? Could this be swapping out? [22:48] that's also one other thing I have tried, I reinstalled chromium and that seems to be not having this issue. I have 6GB of ram. [22:49] I regularly perform updates as well. [22:49] redderhs: so, its just firefox? how about when you move your ff config out of the way? and test stock config? [22:49] i'll have to look into on how to set everything back to default. [22:50] redderhs: not realy [22:50] redderhs: you just move it out of the way.. test.. and put it right back if all is well [22:50] redderhs: move it, rename it.. or test as a new user [22:50] I mean, is this just a file(s) located somewhere? [22:51] redderhs: i directory [22:51] ~.mozilla ..is where i find it [22:51] ~/.mozilla [22:53] thanks for the tip holstein, I'll let you know if that resolves the issue or if I do find something that fixes. [22:53] redderhs: i would just test that real quick, because that will tell you a lot [22:53] redderhs: if chormium is working then i dont think it is a flash or java issue [22:53] i would literally just go right now, move that file, and test [22:54] it'll take less than a minute, and tell you so much [22:54] i moved that hidden dir to my desktop and it seems it has upon execution of firefox, it's starting to run in a more stock config [22:54] redderhs: sure.. and with issues? [22:55] most addons are gone, but google talk plugins are still avail. I won't know if the issue is still there until a certain amount of time passes with use. [22:55] it's very sporadic. and sometimes it doesn't freeze all the way as described above. sometimes it will semi lockup to where a minute and a half later it will unfreeze itself. === OutOfControl is now known as benonsoftware [23:00] redderhs: sounds challenging... [23:01] it'll be interesting to see what the resolution is, I like this kinda stuff haha. [23:50] well, it appears the issue just happened again. I currently do not have any youtube pages opened, only 3 tabs opened at the moment. I went to scroll down in reading a forum the system froze for about 5-10 seconds, firefox disappeared as well as the terminal window and the taskbar. the screen was entirely black and a green color similar to that of my openbox theme kind of flashed diagnoally, then, everything reappeared. I currently have FireFox e [23:51] just restarted firefox again via terminal to make sure these nvidia errors are coming from webpages and not youtube or flash related things. [23:52] redderhs: have you reinstalled ff? [23:53] I tried to yesterday, to see if that would resolve the issue, but it didn't uninstall any of my configuration or addons. [23:53] uninstalled and reinstalled via synaptic [23:54] i mean, if its only firefox, then it seems like its a firefox issue.. what version of ff? [23:54] 19.0.2 [23:54] Yeah it really does seem like this issue only happens when Firefox is running. === Dragon_ is now known as Guest26841 [23:59] Hello?
