[02:29] JonathanD: I have a freenode question! [02:30] I thought I'd ask you here rather than in an official channel, if that is okay (-: [02:30] In particular -- some friends and I have an open source quasi-hackerspace community called Beowulf Cluster. We want to use #beowulf, and while it is currently reg'd, no one is using it. Can we have it? [02:30] See http://rose.makesad.us/pipermail/beowulf-cluster/2013-March/thread.html for our community mailing list and info about our free software-oriented hackathon events. [02:36] JonathanD: For now, I will actually try talking to the channel owner (-: [02:42] Anyone here consider themselves knowledgable about open source e-learning software? [02:47] I decided to poke around a Moodle demo site since it is a mainstream e-learning package but it is so ugly and confusing. I expected something different. [05:47] hi paulproteus [05:47] Do that first, but you can also submit a request for it. [05:47] JonathanD: it is very strange that you are awake [05:48] I just woke up. [05:48] That probably isn't any better, is it. [05:48] this is early even for you :) [05:48] Ok, well, the sled was propped up against the door, because it snowed yesterday, and I was going to take the kids up to the park (but it was mostly de-snowed there before I got home) [05:49] And it fell down, and the dog decided it did not belong down (he's slightly ocd) so he started yelling at it. [05:49] aha :) [05:49] So I had to come address that. [05:49] and I let him outside, and picked up my laptop while I'm waiting for him. [05:49] Is that better? :P [05:50] yes, thank you [05:50] :{ [05:50] :P [05:50] Good morning. [05:50] (I beat rmg) [05:50] it's still yesterday here [05:50] hah [09:32] Morning [09:32] the real morning [10:11] Hi rmg51 [10:34] o/ [10:48] Whats up? [11:08] nothing new [11:08] just the usual morning stuff [11:18] Sounds great. [11:18] HI adom [11:24] paulproteus_: morning! [11:25] bye [11:25] later rmg51 [12:07] Morning peoples, dogs, turkeys and everything else [12:08] I would prefer to still be sleeping [12:10] me too [12:11] bed is always better then work [12:49] I could use an egg souffle from Panera [13:35] I didn't know they did egg souffles [13:48] waltman: You are mising out [13:48] missing [14:42] The spinach & bacon egg souffle is my favorite. [14:43] I'll have to try it sometime! [14:50] it seems like bear rock is just gone [14:50] I don't think they moved. [14:58] Yeah, seems like it to me, too. [14:58] I'm kinda sad. [14:59] I've been getting these odd craving for their farmers omelet :( [14:59] The omelets were excellent. [15:01] The burgers and sandwiches, too [17:10] No one answered my e-learning software question. Surely there are opionions. MutantTurkey? waltman? [17:12] moodle is pretty much the default for open source options, but you might also check out canvas: instructure.com [17:13] but there are lots of moodle guides out there if you need help figuring out the workflow [17:20] Of all of them the moodle demo was the ugliest. Surely that counts for a lot with an elearing software. Checking out Canvas now [17:24] alright, I need to name my python package... and it's a python implementation of something called FEAST [17:24] or FS for short [17:24] PyFeast is boring [17:24] any ideas? [17:26] ChinnoDog: All I know about e-learning is that the commercial system Drexel uses sucks. [17:27] Canvas is beautiful. Thanks pleia2 [17:27] sure [17:28] Canvas ftw [17:28] waltman: The one that DeVry uses is pretty ugly too. [17:29] when is the new drexel One coming out? [17:30] Among my gripes with the old system is that if you tried to paste code into a text box in their discussion forums, it wouldn't display any of your formatting. [17:31] Makes it rather challenging to read lisp code that way :) [17:39] "If you're a technologist, most software is bad. Think of the worst software you use and you probably have a business idea." [17:39] so true [17:45] JonathanD: Likewise! [17:52] paulproteus_: is there a website or just the ML? [17:53] For now, there is just the mailing list. There is an events page here: http://pointlesstopology.com/events [17:53] But not a full website just about the event. [17:53] Although nm, I guess the above really is about the event! === paulproteus_ is now known as paulproteus [17:54] JonathanD: ^ Yes, there is a website [17:54] Ok. I'll see what I can find out. [17:55] I should go sometime, sunday nights are just lousy for me (half the time there is an ubuntu california night, the other half I'm spending QT with my fiance :)) [17:55] s/night/meeting [17:57] who am I kidding, every night is bad [18:12] pleia2: Qt!! I thought you were an XFCE user!! [18:12] (just kidding) [18:12] (also I nearly typed XKCD user) [18:13] :P [19:09] pleia2: Are you committed to using Tiny Tiny RSS as your Google Reader replacement? There is this: http://www.digg.com/reader [19:10] right, moving to another 3rd party hosted reader (that's not even finished) makes a ton of sense :P [19:10] tt-rss works great, I don't even like digg === paulproteus is now known as shauna === shauna is now known as paulproteus [19:16] But they have 96 days 4 hours and 44 mins to finish it [19:16] Even if it is just a google reader clone I might be happy with it [19:57] pleia2: I use hosted newsblur periodically, which I know I can self-host, as a random factoid. [19:57] I haven't actually read RSSs in ~1y though.
