[00:10] hello everyone [00:10] hello [00:11] I suppose i'm having a somewhat "classic" problem of not being able to change the video from 800X600 to 1024X768 with the Atom N2600 on an Eee PC 1025c [00:11] something to do with the driver [00:12] anyone can help [00:14] i would appreciate very much any help given [00:14] !resolution | FernandoB [00:14] FernandoB: The X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. It's a fresh guest install in virtual box if that matters as far as the correct channel for my question? [01:21] nuub: ask and we'll see if a volunteer can help [01:29] cool. so, i've installed xubuntu 12.04 lts guest in virtualbox on a ubuntu 12.04lts host. i am able to update through update manager and sudo apt-get. Ran sudo apt-get upgrade. installed dkms as recommended on vbox website. finally installed vbox guest additions and when I try to run firefox it can't connect to the internet even though host os can browse and everything normally through normal connection and vpn so my question is why n [01:29] works? [01:29] works? [01:30] wired connection also. [01:33] nuub, in network manager, edit the wired connection: [01:33] nuub, make the connection type dhcp (addresses only) and in search domains, type "7.7.7.7, 8.8.8.8" [01:33] and try reconnecting to that network [01:35] Might want DNS server, not search domain. [01:36] ok i'll try [01:36] right, that [01:36] type both just seperate with comma? [01:36] * knome didn't check the facts :) [01:36] nuub, yup [01:36] lol [01:36] brb [01:38] worked! perfect, thx knome and unit193 very appreciated [05:37] I have been trying to slove this problem all day. I installed nvidia drivers from a different ppa (x-swat) and with a kernel update the system wouldn't load the load screen. I have purged all nvidia, deleted xorg.conf, reinstalled nouveau and xserver-xorg and then I tried to reinstall nvidia-current and it does the same thing. Doesn't load the login screen (something about etc/default/saned) [05:37] if someone could help me out would be much appreciated because I don't know what to do anymore and I really don't want to noob it out and not learn anything by reinstalling [07:42] Hi guys, i have no sound on my Aspire One netbook. " Audio device: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)" = Intel HD audio [07:42] If i open alsamixer in console i see controls and the sound device is detectable, but my pulseaudio seem like doesn't want to detect it [07:42] while i play sound - there's no sound at all [07:43] All i have in volume control applet, is Dummy Output [07:54] XATRIX: is pulseaudio started? you could try 'pulseaudio --start' in terminal [07:54] Yeap , it's running [07:54] hm [07:54] I also restarted it [07:56] http://fpaste.org/wUjK/ === azeam_afk is now known as azeam [13:42] hola [13:42] !es | xubuntu682 [13:42] xubuntu682: En la mayoría de los canales de Ubuntu, se habla sólo en inglés. [13:42] :) hola [13:43] hello [13:43] from? [14:44] hi, I have no audio output in ubuntu 12.10 minimal xfce DE. With packard bell easynote v7900 [14:46] on pavucontrol I have output dummy I don't know what to do [14:47] That means pulseaudio (and probably ALSA) have not seen your audio interface [14:48] maob, Is ALSA installed? [14:49] I think so but how can I check it? [14:50] When you say ubuntu with minimal xfce, how did you install? [14:50] Is this from the minimal ISO? [14:50] yexs [14:50] yes [14:50] OK [14:51] sudo apt-get install alsa-base [14:51] Just to make sure [14:52] yes there is [14:52] Have you rebooted since installing? [14:53] For internal devices the modules are loaded at boot time [14:53] sure [14:54] aplay -l [14:54] That should list what alsa sees [14:54] fine [14:54] no audio device [14:54] sorry no audio device find [14:55] lsmod [14:56] does that show any snd_ modules? [14:57] http://paste.ubuntu.com/5652485/ [14:59] That looks like a pretty standard list of modules. [15:03] len-1304, what can I do? [15:04] I'm not sure :) I wold at least try rebooting, but if you have done that more than once... [15:04] does alsamixer run? [15:04] no [15:05] it doesn't run [15:05] sudo apt-get install alsa-utils [15:06] already installed [15:06] to run alsamixer? [15:06] Ya I guess if you had aplay. [15:07] That is the package alsamixer comes from [15:07] does the terminal tell you why alsamixer doesn't run? [15:09] it says file or directory doesn't exist [15:10] It looks like the package is not properly installed then [15:11] oh [15:13] sudo apt-get --reinstall install alsa-base alsa-utils [15:13] Look for errors while installing. [15:14] ok reboot [15:15] Might want to do something like sudo apt-get -f install first [15:16] genii-around, Thanks [15:17] I have installed sound from a mini.iso before without problems, so I am not sure what happened [15:20] again alsamixer doesn't run [15:20] is it missing curses? [15:21] (what files is missing?) [15:21] I don't know [15:21] :( [15:21] What happens instead? Do you get an error? [15:22] no [15:22] try which alsamixer [15:23] maybe I'll do it again and I'll paste you the result [15:23] ( should give /usr/bin/alsamixer) [15:23] ? [15:23] type: which alsamixer [15:24] yes [15:24] No output? [15:25] (/usr/bin/alsamixer [15:26] so alsa-mixer is there, the missing file is something it is looking for [15:27] ok [15:27] ls /dev/snd/ [15:29] http://paste.ubuntu.com/5652560/ [15:31] Is libasound2 installed? [15:32] sudo apt-get install libasound2 [15:32] hi don't know if this is the right forum, have a question - does steam work on xubuntu? [15:34] maob, is linux-sound-base installed? [15:37] maob, linux-sound-base should be installed as alsa-base requires it. [15:40] len-1304 both already installed [15:40] Ya, they are both depends of stuff you already have [15:41] play -l still shows no devices? I am not sure where to go from here. This is not xfce related though, but general ubuntu [15:42] You may find more people in the #ubuntu channel [15:43] audio shold work with no DE at all. I have installed audio on headless systems. [15:43] ok [15:44] thank you anyway [15:45] there is also an #alsa channel [15:45] maob, ^^ [16:53] hi all, trying to install xubuntu 12.10 onan old laptop, have trouble with the desktop loading with a black screen [16:53] ie there is some blu eon top and bottom [16:53] but I cant do much, except switch toa terminal with alt-f1 etc [16:54] any tips? [16:58] try nomodeset [16:58] !nomodeset [16:58] A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter [16:59] thanks a lot [17:06] didn't help, unfortunately... [17:06] what video card ironi [17:07] Most of the screen is black, thesre is some blue on the top and bottom (the black area is widescreen format, basically) and there is blue on top and bottom [17:08] hi I am looking for some info on Xubuntu os [17:08] lspci in a terminal will show it [17:09] I have a compaq cq-62 laptop and am looking for linux os that is compatible any ideas? [17:09] xubntu [17:09] xubuntu [17:10] bazhang: ATI Radeon® Xpress 200M (Acer TravelMate 2450) [17:10] that seems to be quite an old card [17:10] which driver do you have installed for it [17:11] bazhang: I am just trying to run the 12.10 live cd, to install xubuntu [17:11] could be the iso is corrupt then. try to md5 the iso [17:12] !md5 [17:12] To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows [17:13] bazhang: can I run the "check disc for defects" on the cd? [17:14] sure ironi . I'd do that subsequent to md5 the iso though [17:15] if I put the xubuntu os on a dvd and then run w/out install that should be minimal intrusion?? [17:15] Just boot and reboot [17:15] It doesn't touch the hard drive [17:16] (doesn't write to unless you manually mount it) [17:16] ok that sounds pretty good [17:16] bazhang: doesn't match :/ [17:17] ironi, that would be the issue then [17:17] ironi, I would use zsync to correct it if you are downloading with linux [17:17] (I don't know if there is a windows tool for that) [17:17] len-1304: im running mac actually [17:18] ironi, I have run linux for so long I have pretty much no experience with anything else. [17:18] should be able to install zsync, lets see [17:18] ok, got zsync [17:19] len-1304: how do I correct it? [17:19] thanks for the info and I hope to be seeing you again if all goes well :) [17:19] Just point zsync at the image.zsync file in the download directory [17:19] but I have no .zsync file? [17:19] just an iso file [17:20] ok you have 12.10 so... [17:20] let me check. [17:20] len-1304: I could download it again I suppose [17:21] len-1304: oh now I see, there is one to download on the server [17:21] It is much quicker to just download the *.zsync file. [17:21] got it, running it now [17:23] zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/quantal/release/xubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso.zsync [17:23] in the same dir as your iso. (or use the 64bit one) [17:23] Oh looks like you got it. [17:25] zsync -i oldfile.iso link-to-new.iso if you want to "continue" from something with a different name. === bipolar_ is now known as bipolar [17:27] len-1304: yep, and the md5 on my iso file is now correct, will try to burn it again [17:28] or actually put it on an usb drive :) [18:13] help with Geforce2 mx/mx/ 400 not working [19:03] Hi [19:04] why you do not remove Global Menu Bar integration on Firefox? [19:04] it is not working [19:04] just taking the space. [19:09] abderraouf, did you read the answer on the mailing list? [19:10] yes :D you sey why it is exist [19:11] and now i sey what if you remove it [19:11] there was also a reason why it isn't possible to remove it [19:11] *_* [19:11] ? [19:12] please read the mail again. it saves both our and your time if you take the time to read the mails answering your questions properly [19:12] apt-cache depends firefox > Recommends: firefox-globalmenu Xubuntu builds with recommends enabled, otherwise there would be a "issues." [19:12] s/a// [19:14] Unitl93: Now I understand, good reason, thank you [19:14] Sure. [19:16] What will be the name of Ubuntu 13.10? [19:16] !raring [19:16] Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) will be the 18th release of Ubuntu, Discussion and support until final release in #ubuntu+1 [19:52] hi all [19:54] I just have switched from kde to xfce without fresh install. Every thing is fine except that some settings are reset when a session is loaded at loging [19:54] nothere_, what is your question [19:55] amongst others the mouse is allways set to right handed eventhough i have an xinput directive in ~/.xsessionrc swapping the settings similar with the key bindings they are reset again [19:55] nothere_, setting it to left handed on the mouse settings doesnt work? [19:55] my questions is now which files either in /etc /var or elsewhere i do have to check if there is some likely residual or default setting which forces mouse and others to be reset [19:56] !purexfce [19:56] If you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce » [19:56] nothere_, maybe you will get some hints there ^^^ [19:58] it works, but i do have to set it after every login anew and for this i have to select lefthanded, righthanded and again lefthanded on the mouse settings dialog before it is switched to lefthanded. [19:58] I'll check the link === march_notebook is now known as march [20:40] good evening === G4MBY is now known as PaulW2U [20:45] @GridCube @ubottu didn't help at least as i allready have installed xubuntu-desktop id did not do the full effect. apt-get install --reinstall xubutu-desktop did not do much [20:47] I still do have to flip the mous on every login and .xsessionrc is overridden by some program or other settings mechanism when session is loaded. [20:48] nothere_, first, ubottu its a bot :P, second the idea was most about removing unwanted packages, in any case, why dont you try making a new user, in order to do this tests of permanency of your settings, if they continue to fail then [20:49] ah hm didn't think of that [20:49] nothere_, thats weird, maybe you need to set up a xorg.conf file? stating how you want the mouse to behave? [20:52] I do have a xorg.conf file and there it says that the pointers are now handled by hal and not to be configured anymore in xorg [20:54] yes, thats to be expected [20:59] @gridCube you were right with the new user it works [20:59] :D eggcelent [20:59] so where to look for the broken session settings file or the nasty autostrated program or applet which forces mouse back to right handed and does many other strange things. [20:59] where to start systematic search [21:00] you should now just erradicate all the configs you dont "need" from your standard user, i usually nuke all of them except for the xchat logs :P [21:00] all of .local and .config [21:00] you mean ~/.conf what else ? [21:01] probably ~/.local [21:02] ~/.config has the settings for xfce4 [21:07] hi [21:07] how replay for a topic on the maillist? [21:08] respond to the mail directly, clic the "respond" icon [21:08] and :) hi abderraouf [21:09] i've read all of your recommendations, there where... interesting [21:09] abderraouf, care to join #xubuntu-devel please :) [21:09] GridCube_ that did it now everything is as it should [21:10] :D nothere_ excellent im very happy for you [21:10] no one on #xubuntu-devel ^_^ [21:10] I did not radically clean ~/.conf ~/.local i left configs for evolution and program i have used allready before and continue to use. [21:11] P: you just talk, when someone can answer you they wil abderraouf :) [22:38] Hello! I have a question regarding wubi install of Xubuntu. Can anybody assisst me here?
