Guest6550any ideas why my laptop won't shut down? It hands on the "Power off." message09:41
Guest6550hangs*09:41
murthyGuest6550: no disk activity when it hangs?09:44
Guest6550murthy: no nothing, it just stands there, not even ctrl alt del works, i have to turn it off manually09:45
Guest6550murthy: it's the same in ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu and opensuse 12.1, 2 and 3. have no idea where to look anymore09:46
=== gary is now known as Guest4939
murthyGuest6550: there is a way to turn it off safely, instead of doing it manually. you can press alt+printscreen+s and then press alt+printscreen+b, this will write all the data to the disk and restart the computer, this way its a bit safe09:48
murthyGuest6550: about the problem,09:48
murthyGuest6550: whats your kde version and kubuntu version?09:49
Guest6550murthy: kubuntu is freshly installed 12.04 and updated to the max (no outside repos)09:49
Guest6550and kde is i guess 4.809:50
murthyGuest6550: can you try something?09:51
Guest6550murthy: i can try whatever, the laptop is freshyl installed and not even for me, so09:52
murthyGuest6550: goto settings-> power management09:52
murthyGuest6550: is there a column on the left?09:53
Guest6550yup09:53
murthyGuest6550: is there an item called energy savings?09:54
Guest6550yes09:54
murthyGuest6550: on the right what option is set for"when power button is pressed"?09:55
Guest6550it's set to show the dialog window09:55
murthyGuest6550: change it to shutdown09:56
murthyGuest6550: then press apply button09:56
Guest6550ok09:56
Guest6550so, i press it now? :D09:57
murthyGuest6550: ya :)09:57
Guest6550ok, see you in a while09:57
mb___murthy: nope, it froze again09:59
murthymb___: so did you close the irc window before you pressed the power button?10:00
mb___i don't think i did lol, but that shouldn't be an issue? i mean, there is now way i can ensure that the man who will inherit this computer will do so every time10:01
murthymb___: i asked because your previous nick closed the connection, that happens when the client is closed, so my guess is that some process is blocking the shutdown process. when the system hangs can you open a tty?10:03
mb___murthy: no, after it hangs i can't do a thing, if i open it beforehand, it just states that the eth0 interface is down and hangs on a message "Power off."10:04
murthymb___: no keyboard response in tty?10:05
mb___murthy: this is the last thing in the log before the new boot: 28.03.2013. 10:59:11mb-MTCrsyslogd-2039Could not open output pipe '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ]10:05
mb___murthy: no, absolutely nothing10:06
murthymb___: is there a harddisk indicator led in laptop?10:07
=== FabianB is now known as Guest42403
mb___murthy: yesw10:07
murthymb___: when the system hangs, press "alt+printscreen+s"   and see if the harddisk led for activity, if there is activity  everytime you press the key combination then the kernel hasn't crashed10:09
mb___murthy ok, on it10:09
mb___murthy: nope, no activity at all10:12
murthymb___: what is the kernel version?10:12
mb___3.2.0-39-generic-pae10:13
mb___murthy: most forums i googled up said it's an "acpi" problem, but i've tried all possible settings and nothing helped10:15
murthymb___: do you have a live cd with any other kernel version? livecds of ubuntu 12.10 or 13.04  would be better10:15
mb___well, yesterday i had the same issue with opensuse 12.3, and it has 3.5 or 3.7,  not sure10:15
murthymb___: have you tried the grub acpi options?10:16
mb___tried with "off" and "force"10:16
mimmoaiuto10:17
murthymb___: can you try using the this command in tty "sudo shutdown -h now" ?10:19
mb___murthy: sure, but i think i tried it before, or some variation10:19
mb___brb10:19
mb___murthy: froze as before10:25
murthymb___: you tried all the acpi options in the bios?10:26
mb___this laptop has a ridiculously small number of bios options, only boot order and time/date, nothing related to acpi10:27
murthymb___: give me the laptop model number10:27
mb___murthy: good luck with that, it's a Forcebook 8258i10:29
murthymb___: can you paste the kernel log? use paste.kde.org10:31
mb___sure, just a sec10:32

mb___k, what? :D10:51
murthymb___: From the log i can see that a nepomuk service segfaults, i am wondering if that can block the shutdown process10:54
mb___maybe it can, but xubuntu and opensuse don't have nepomuk :/ i'm pretty sure it's a deeper problem10:54
murthymb___: ya, at least we have a clue10:55

_droidhi people, i have isntalled kubuntu. now I'am a former windows user and I use thunderbird as my default mail client which i do also today. Now when I want to click onto a link that is mentioned in an email for example,  it asks me with what application do I want to open it. Now since I'm new with kubuntu, how do I tell thunderbird to use my firefox?11:03
murthymb___:  it says the system is using legacy suspend/resume methods that might be a cause, you need to check the bios settings.11:04
mb___there is nothing in the bios concerning that :/11:04
murthymb___: that is very strange11:07
murthy_droid: do you get a dialog to select the program?11:07
mb___murthy: well, it's a crappy laptop, to say the least11:08
murthymb___: I doubt that you are not doing the right thing to get the bios settings and my guess is you are seeing one part of the bios settings and not the actual full one11:09
mb___murthy: well, i can assure you that it's the whole thing11:10
murthymb___: some bios settings can be accessed thought an app provided by the company from the OS11:10
murthy_droid: to select firefox, select /usr/bin/firefox file11:12
mb___murthy: it's really not the case, it is a croatian made laptop from chinese parts, with little or no documentation. i feel silly just typing this11:13
murthymb___: other operating systems work well?11:14

ovidiu-florinafter I finish my shift14:44
lordievaderovidiu-florin: It didn't freeze today? With the Xrender?14:44
ovidiu-florinno it did not14:44
lordievaderHmm, ok. That is interesting.14:45
ovidiu-florinI suspect it was because the driver was unstable, and I had to change my video card a few weeks ago14:45
ovidiu-florinand after I've changed it I did not reinstall / install other driver14:45
lordievaderThat might very well be the problem.14:47
ovidiu-florinI thought it was weird.... since my other computers did not manifest this problem14:47
lordievaderEach computer is different.14:47
ovidiu-florinYes but I allways use the Nvidia current updates driver14:48

BluesKajovidiu-florin:  I did exactly the same as you changing nvidia cards without changing the driver and I had some frezes , until reinsatlling the driver, then OpenGL and Native settings in desktop effects worked as they should15:02
ovidiu-florinBluesKaj: thank you for your confirmation15:03
BluesKajovidiu-florin:  np , I had a 7600gt which died , so I replaced it with a 8400gs (good enough for my needs)15:04
ovidiu-florinI have no ideea what I had and what I have... (don't really care - this is the work computer) the fan stopped on the old one so I had to change it.15:06
BluesKajright15:06
BluesKajthis pc is my media server for our audio/video system so it's important to keep running, altho the pc itself is 5yrs old now15:10
ovidiu-florinBluesKaj: is it connected to a TV? or just as a file server?15:20
BluesKajovidiu-florin:  both the TV and Audio Receiver with the soundcard feeding the spdif signal ,  and DVI to HDMI on the TV15:25
ovidiu-florinI'm also interested in doing something like that. could you please tell me more about your system?15:26
ovidiu-florinHow did you set it up?15:26
BluesKajmy computer graphics card feeds the DVI(HDMI) video to the hdmi tv input , the soundcard digital out or spdif sends the audio to a digital to analog converter (DAC) input on my audio home theater receiver15:29
BluesKajovidiu-florin: ^15:29
BluesKajsome ppl who don't use a separate audio system from their tv can just feed the hdmi from the graphics card to the tv ,( hdmi also carries the digtal audio to the tv)15:32
BluesKajovidiu-florin: ^15:32
ovidiu-florinHow do you set up the video card to also send audio to the HDMI? I have a video board with 2 DVI outputs and I'm using a standard HDMI cable with an DVI to HDMI converter.15:36
ovidiu-florinBluesKaj: ^15:37
BluesKajovidiu-florin:  it depends on the graphics card , some DVI to hdmi will carry the audio signal if you enable the spdif ( digital audio out)15:39
ovidiu-florinBluesKaj: that means that the video card also has spdif ?15:39
BluesKajenable spdif on the soundcard15:39
ovidiu-florinI'll come back to this once I'm in front of the mentioned computer15:40
ovidiu-florinthis saturday most likely15:40
ovidiu-florinBluesKaj:  thank you15:41
BluesKajhdmi looks for the digital audio by default afaik, hdmi can't carry an analog audio signal and shouldn't15:41
BluesKajok , i should be around on Sat morning , thatwould be afternoon in europe :)15:42
