Jessica898Is any way to remove icons from desktop ? like trash bin14:25
baizonJessica898: yes14:26
len-1304settings manager ->desktop ->icons tab14:26
len-1304at the bottom is Default icons where you can remove icons one at a time14:27
baizonJessica898: http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/preferences#icons14:27
len-1304I use the one at the top to remove all of them... (Icon type)14:27
Jessica898thank you :)14:27

ceegeehi there14:32
ceegeeI am using xubuntu 12.10 64 bit on my pc with two screens, connected with DVI to a nvidia card. After login to my XFCE session the screen is duplicated (all the same on booth screens). I am able to set one screen as primary and the other one as extended with xrandr, but I have to do this manually on every boot.14:34
len-1304ceegee, If you then go to the settings manager and select display14:35
len-1304and change anything back and forth, it will save your settings14:35
ceegeeI tried to put the xrandr command into startup applications in the xfce settings menu, did not work, next try was to set the command in .xprofile, but it failed14:36
len-1304xfce has a config daemon that sets up xrandr that wouold over write that.14:36
ceegeeokay, now I changed the resolution to a lower one, said "keep changes", reverted it back to the original value and kept this change too14:38
len-1304if you use the settings manager->display dialog to rotate a screen then put it back to normal it will save the screen setting including possition to the xfce file14:38
len-1304So you should be able to reboot and have it stay that way14:38
len-1304Just a note14:38
len-1304...14:38
ceegeeI hope so, if not I will ask you again ;-)14:39
ceegeehehe14:39
len-1304if you ever boot with only one screen then this set of settings will be lost14:39
len-1304Handling dual screens is an area that "needs work"14:39
holsteindriver support as well14:40
ceegeeyeah, I see14:40
holsteinthat can be a deal breaker.. driver support14:40
ceegeeokay guys, I wil give it a try14:40
ceegeesee you later14:40

smudgerhi all16:03
smudgercan anyone answer a quick easy question16:03
holstein!ask16:03
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience16:03
smudgerkind of poll really so more replies the better16:03
smudger;)16:03
smudgerwhat are folks experience with gksudo or gksu?16:04
holsteinsmudger: a poll is probably better for the offtopic channels16:04
holstein!ot16:04
ubottu#xubuntu is the Xubuntu support channel, #xubuntu-devel for discussion regarding development of Xubuntu, and #xubuntu-offtopic is for random chatter. Welcome!16:04
holstein!gksudo16:04
ubottuIf you need to run graphical applications as root, use « gksudo », as it will set up the environment more appropriately. Never just use "sudo"! (See http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to know why)16:04
smudgeryes i know that16:04
smudgerbut when i use it it hangs my system for several minutes16:05
holsteinsmudger: then, i would ask the support question here.. what hangs? gksudo? how? what is the command you are running?16:05
smudgerits not a poll really - just that i need more foljk to reply to establish if i have an individual problem with my install or its a bug to report16:06
smudgersay i want to edit a file without changing to root ownership16:06
bazhangwhat file16:07
smudgeri gksudo leafpad or gedit or even nano16:07
smudgerany file16:07
bazhangwhich one, be very clear please16:07
smudgersay fstab for example but its not a good example as it would not be helpful to be told well just use sudo ;)16:08
bazhangsmudger, best to give the exact issue. not some hypothetical16:09
smudgerany file16:09
bazhangno idea16:09
smudgerany text file16:09
smudgerok so noone else having this problem16:09
bazhangyou have not described any problem16:09
smudgerthat is what i need to know ;)16:09
smudgerwhen i try to open a text file using any text editor in combination with gksudo or gksu the system freezes for a while - a few minutes16:10
smudgeri don;t see how that is not a problem described but hey i am just human ;)16:11
bazhangsystem settings files, as in /   , are not the same as in your home. thats why there is no answer as you have not given any details at all16:11
smudgerhow can i be more exact than that!16:11
smudgerah so i need to check if i get the same delay outside root area16:12
smudgerwell that my small brain can understand16:12
smudgerk will check16:12
smudgermay be a while before i get thawed.. maybe not16:13
justakilli install pyglet, pygame and pyopengl throw apt-get but i can't find the modules anywhere in my library's16:16
justakillthrew*16:16
justakilli can't import them either16:16
justakillanyone know what I can do?16:16
justakillor where they are?16:16
smudgerok just got thawed after gksudo a backup text file in /home partition area16:19
smudgersame partion as where my user folder is16:19
smudgerso ruled out possibility that caused by trying to edit file in root partition16:20
smudgerbut i am assuming that no-one else has this problem since no-one has mentioned it and gksudo is probably prefferred by most as per psychocat link16:21
smudgerso i will have to check forum more thoroughly and see if anyone else has had same problem before posting a new thread.16:22
smudgerat least i got a response here that was supportish which is more than can be said for when i tried out mint - where they hang out egos mostly it seems ;)16:24
smudgerother than this gksu freeze everything else works well for me - 12.04 xubuntu16:25
smudgeris there some log file somewhere which i can find to see what is happening during the freeze period?16:27
smudgerthat would be helpful to know16:28
smudgerif anyone knows16:28
smudgeroh well...16:28
len-1304log files are all in /var/log/16:29
smudgeris there a log of what is happening when programs are executed?16:29
len-1304Ones to look at are syslog, messages, auth.log,16:30
smudgertnx!16:30
smudgervery helpful16:30
smudgeri'll keep this open in case anyone else chips in like that16:31
=== Guest6038 is now known as epzil0n
smudgeri don;t have a messages file in /var/log16:38
smudgerin auth log there is a mention not of any problem but the timestamps show a 3 minute delay in completetion of the gksudo request to gedit the file16:39
len-1304No problem, I think it mostly there for old time sake, most of the stuff that used to use messages has been split off into its own file.16:39
smudgerk16:39
smudgerit may be a conflict with lightdm16:40
smudgersince gksudo brings up the graphical passwd box16:40
smudgereven when using nano or something.16:40
bazhangnano does not use gksudo16:40
len-1304look in the xorg file and in ~/.xsession-errors16:40
smudgerk16:41
len-1304smudger, honestly, for the amount of time people use gksudo, even if it did take time to do anything most people wouldn't notice.16:42
aicasn-Vhey all. i'm having trouble getting windows name resolution to work and i'm not sure why. i have the winbind package installed (ver 3, not 4) and i have  hosts: files wins dns  in my /etc/nsswitch.conf    i still cannot resolve MyWindowsPC1 from my xubuntu box.  any ideas?17:11
aicasn-Vto be specific, a couple of utilities can resolve the hostname to an ip, but not all...  getent hosts [hostname] works, ping [hostname] works, but nslookup [hostname] does not and host [hostname] does not17:13
aicasn-Vmost importantly, nor does boost::asio::ip::tcp::resolver17:14

Alexz4nderI'm having trouble getting XFCE to start after the login screen on Xubuntu 12,04. I've encountered this problem before with the .Xauthority file ownership, but this time there must be something else preventing it from starting up. Anyone have any ideas?20:16
baizonAlexz4nder: try removing the .cache folder20:19
Unit193!xhangs20:20
ubottuIf the GUI hangs after logging in, use <ctrl><alt><f1> to switch to text mode. Log in and do: rm .{X,ICE}authority20:20
Alexz4nderI've changed ownership of the .ICEauthority file but that didn't fix it. I can try removing it and see if that works.20:22
baizonAlexz4nder: ubottu said remove this file ;)20:22
Alexz4nderyes, that's what I was responding to.20:23
Alexz4nderI can try the .cache folder after that20:24
Alexz4nderneither of those worked20:38
Alexz4nderand the GUI doesn't hang. After entering pw, it goes blank (as it normally does), but then goes right back to the login screen.20:41
Alexz4nderI've had this identical problem before on another machine, so I looked up the problem and found that changing ownership of .Xauthority fixed it. But now I'm having same problem on another machine and cannot get it to work.20:43
Alexz4nderI have to shut down lightdm and do "startxfce4" to get GUI to start up.20:43
Alexz4nderthat's the only way it works20:43
Alexz4nderBut then I have another problem. I want to access it remotely. I have Vino installed on the machine that's having the problem, and I'd like to access it with Vinagre.20:44
Alexz4nderbut X11 won't run, and when it does with "startxfce4", for some reason Vino won't start up.20:45
=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
Alexz4nderhow would I have the system start up with "startxfce4" instead of "lightdm"?20:50
Alexz4nderwhen I try to start Vino server, I get this message:20:52
Alexz4nderWARNING **: Command line `dbus-launch --autolaunch=[lots of numbers I just replaced] --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n20:53
Alexz4nder** Message: The desktop sharing service is already running, exiting.20:54
Alexz4nderbut it's not running.20:54
Alexz4ndercould it be that "startxfce4" is starting up in ctrl+alt+F8 and the monitor is stuck in ctrl+alt+F7? I've experienced something like that before. I'm trying to do this all remotely right now.20:58
treweanyone an idea were to configure the x and y coordinates of the lightdm window?22:15
trewenot in /etc/lightdm/*.conf22:16
