Fuzzy_WuzzyHi! I have no idea how the Eagle circuit board design program, and some other program I forgot the name of, got installed on my kubuntu 12.04. Had no problems removing both, but am a bit confused. Does anyone know what might cause such a mysterious installation? I mean, I -guess- it could have been a dependency, but I was able to uninstall them without pulling anything else along.02:38
cha5on@Fuzzy_Wuzzy no idea how that could have happened by accident.  Maybe past you did it and forgot?02:41
larry_how is everyone this evening?02:41
Fuzzy_Wuzzynah, never even heard of those programs.02:41
cha5onthat is very strange02:42
Fuzzy_Wuzzybesides, my install is very fresh - less than 24 hours :)02:42
cha5on@larry_ not bad, how're you doing?02:42
Fuzzy_Wuzzyhmm... maybe I missed them on my initial purge? hmm :/02:43
Fuzzy_Wuzzydon't s'pose anyone knows off-hand if the Eagle circuit board design prog is included by default in 12.04? :)02:43
cha5onalmost certainly not02:44
Fuzzy_WuzzyI guess that'll remain a mystery then. Oh, while I'm here - is it safe to remove Menu Editor (described as XDG menu editor)?02:44
Fuzzy_Wuzzyor like, if I should02:45

ahoneybunHello people04:07
amigamiahi does kubuntu use gnome 2? does it have the optionn for top and bottom panels ie 2 panels if you so desire? reason i need to know is because 10.04 is being placed into the trash by the ubuntu powers. is kubuntu my alternative?04:08
ahoneybunamigamia: KDE has the power to have that setup04:09
amigamiawhat about gnome though, is that an opion with kubuntu? i dont like kde. i dont have anythign against one or the other i just have a preference for gnome04:10
amigamialet me check the website brb04:10
=== stephen is now known as Guest44687
ahoneybunamigamia: Well you can install the new Ubuntu 12.10 release or 12.04 if you like long term and install xfce and set it up like GNOME 2, or install Cinnamon or MATE04:11
ahoneybunMATE is the original GNOME 2 code04:11
amigamiaok04:11
ahoneybunamigamia: what system are you running? Ubuntu 10.04?04:12
amigamiayes04:12
amigamiait's the best ever. only like commodore vision better but that's another  story. but yes i love this expereince completely.04:12
ahoneybunwell the best option is to update to the next LTS of 12.04 and install MATE which is GNOME 204:13
ahoneybunI think anyway04:13
amigamiaubuntu messed up with the unity and then all these esoteric desktop enviornments. i lost it after 11.x came out. and it still stinks  to this date with 12/13.04:13
amigamiaso i dont have to live with that dreadful desktop environment?04:14
ahoneybunjust update to 12.04 as by default it will jump the the next LTS and install MATE http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download04:14
ahoneybunhttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/Mate_Desktop_de.png04:15
ahoneybunamigamia: thats the wonder of GNU/Linux you can choice :)04:15
amigamiayes your absolutely correct ahoneybun i agree completely04:16

mamemame187I use 13.04 o.o04:17
ahoneybunmamemame187: I have Ubuntu 13.04 in a VM with the newest GNOME 3 I can get to try it out04:18

ahoneybunmamemame187: I hear its very stable for a beta04:19
mamemame187Very04:19
ahoneybunamigamia: how are you doing ?04:19
mamemame187Only thing that hates me is rekonq04:19
mamemame187I just use Firefox now04:19
ahoneybunmamemame187: same here I see progress in it and I like a qt webkit browser04:19
ahoneybunjust that Firefox does everything I need04:19
amigamiado you like it ahoneybun?04:20
ahoneybunamigamia: what MATE?04:20
amigamiaoh i see yyou do have the panels ahoneybun04:21
ahoneybunamigamia: on MATE? yes it looks just like GNOME 2 as it is, now GNOME 3.8 has a classic mode that has the gnome 2 look with the new technologies04:22
amigamiatest04:29
amigamiawow it is still connected04:29
amigamiastrange04:29
ahoneybunamigamia: what happened?04:29
amigamiaikeep losing wifi with this clear hot spot here04:32
ahoneybunoh ok04:34
amigamiawhat is the signiifcance difference of kubuntu and ubuntu?04:34
ahoneybunamigamia: Kubuntu tries to use a pure KDE stack while Ubuntu uses their own tools with a mix with GNOME stack04:35

surfn_hey10:15
surfn_I've got an SD card that's acting funny.  Are there any disk checking tools included in Kubuntu?10:16
lordievadersurfn_: fsck is allways available.10:16
surfn_thanks lordievader, will try it now10:16
lordievadersurfn_: Do you know how to use fsck?10:17
surfn_not really, its a fat32 located at /dev/sbd10:18
surfn_sorry sdb10:18
lordievadersurfn_: /dev/sdb1? /dev/sdb is the entire card. /dev/sdb1 is the first partition on it. Is the sd-card mounted?10:18
surfn_sudo fsck /dev/sdb110:19
surfn_ran it, no files (which I knew) but it didn't do a deep scan (which is what I need10:19
surfn_I need a scan that will check every bit of data10:21
lordievaderWith acting funny do you mean things get corrupted or something completely different?10:22
surfn_I'm using it in my raspberry pi, and it seems to corrupt.  I have an exact same SD card, which works.10:22
surfn_This one doesn't10:22
surfn_and I want to see if there's something faulty in it.10:23
surfn_it has a lifetime warranty.  And i know something is wrong, I just want to know WHAT.10:23
lordievaderIf it seems corrupt fsck.vfat should report it so.10:23
lordievadersurfn_: Is your RPi overclocked, setting Turbo?10:24
lordievadersurfn_: http://askubuntu.com/questions/147228/how-to-repair-a-corrupted-fat32-file-system10:24
surfn_it only seems to do a really quick scan even with vfat10:24
surfn_no, its not overclocked.  Like on first boot, there's a problem.10:24
lordievaderYou are sure the problem is the sd-card, not the RPi image?10:25
surfn_like I say, I have another card, used the same image... it worked.10:26
surfn_This one failed.  So I reinstalled the image.  Failed again.10:27
surfn_So I reinstalled and tried in a second pi, failed again.10:27
surfn_it does this weird thing, where it says an IRQ has fialed waiting for command 1310:27
lordievaderHmm, I have to agree this does point to the sd-card.10:28
surfn_actually the error is: Timeout waiting for hardware interrupt - cmd1210:29
lordievaderThat might mean it is broken on a hardware level instead of the partition level. But don't take my word for it.10:29
lordievaderI have to go, good luck with your problem. I hope you find a way to fix it.10:31
surfn_lordievader: no errors found10:35

LynoureWhere does one set ogg encoding quality in the System Settings?12:22
BluesKajLynoure:  system settings > multimedia> audio cds >ogg vorbis tab12:27
LynoureBluesKaj: thank you.12:28
LynoureBluesKaj: do you happen to know what's the scale for the slider though, in "quality" mode?12:30
BluesKajLynoure:  you're welcome , but I have no idea about ogg vorbis or the quality , I imagine it's the sampling rate12:31
BluesKajfor recording / conversion12:32
Lynoureeverything I've ripped recently comes out ~ 50K :(12:32
Lynoureand the slider is still about half-way12:32
BluesKajraising the sampling rate on existing mp3 ot other codecs doesn't make the sound any better quality12:32
LynoureBluesKaj: I'd use quality level 7 on command line12:33
Lynoureusually makes one song about 4M12:34
Lynourethe slider has not been changed by me for a while, so this size drop caught me by surprise12:34
BluesKajI don't bother with those codecs , I just use regular wav files , similar to cd quality and compress with flac if I have to12:35
BluesKajlossless codecs have never appealed to me12:35
BluesKajor lossy rather :)12:36
* BluesKaj drinks more coffee to wake up12:36
LynoureBluesKaj: ogg is not lossless12:36
Lynoureah.12:36
BluesKajyes it's lossy as I corrected myself just now12:37
LynoureWould someone else know?12:37
BluesKajwhat bitrate do you choose in the bitrate based dropdown, Lynoure12:39
LynoureBluesKaj: slider, not a dropdown12:41
Lynoureand there was bitrate and quality as options, I went by quality12:41
Lynoureand the slider is 8 notches from the left12:41
BluesKajwhynot just max it out12:42
LynoureBecause they are then HUGE12:42
Lynoureand I cannot hear any difference after ql7, ever12:42
Lynourethese oggs do not even play12:43
AciD`Lynoure > iirc the wikipedia page bout ogg is a good source of information on quality settings12:45
BluesKajLynoure:  suggest you search around for a #music chat or some such12:45
LynoureAciD`: but I want to know what the slider scale is12:45
LynoureAciD`: and how come it broke after November.12:45
AciD`Lynoure > have you searched bugs.kde.org about that problem ?12:46
LynoureThese seem like kubuntu specific questions to me.12:46
Lynourenot yet, will now.12:47
LynoureThere does not seem to be anything relevant12:50
AciD`Lynoure > then if you think it's a bug, it surely is worth reporting it12:51
BluesKajLynoure:  kubuntu specific maybe, but rather narrow in scope ..I was merely suggesting that amore specialized chat  might have more experienced oggvorbis users on kubuntu12:54
LynoureBluesKaj: thanks12:56
Lynoureeven if I switch to bitrate, 256, still get tiny useless files :(12:57
LynoureDoes any of you use Dolphin to rip to oggs?13:00
LynoureI prefer to verify bugs before reporting them.13:00

dahzi have a computer under kubuntu that i can't use anymore: on booting, the loading screen keeps loading and nothing happens, i was able to boot on the console in recovery mode (one thing to note is that the console starts in read-only mode and that i have to remount the disk to be able to write), but i don't know what to look for :( i booted on a live cd and ran fsck /dev/sda1 but it returned "clean";16:22

Obsidian1723May I interject something?16:52
Obsidian1723The best thing to do at this point is to grab your important data and then just do a new install to make sure everything is 100% clean.16:53
Obsidian1723You could always try to reset things via sudo dpkg-reconfigure packagename, but that's less than ideal if multiple things are jacked up.16:54
dahzthanks for the suggestion16:54
SnowhogObsidian1723: Not necessary (yet). dahz: Do a normal shutdown/reboot and make sure that you log in as manon. Make sure that you can get to the desktop normally.16:54
Obsidian1723and I would use Kubuntu 12.04 since it's LTS and 10 is not.16:54
dahzSnowhog: but we didn't change anything? it will still fail right?16:54
Obsidian1723Snowhog: Well, it's theo nly way to guarentee the system is 100% clean.16:54
Snowhogdahz: Shouldn't if you login as manon16:55
dahzSnowhog: but i don't even get the login screen16:55
dahzSnowhog: (just in ctrl+alt+F1)16:55
SnowhogObsidian1723: Not really. His /home/manon directory doesn't have root owned 'critical' files.16:55
Obsidian1723Snowhog: I guess, to each their own. If I have a system that is beyond jacked up, I just nuke and pave, restore my /home from a known good backup and life is well again.16:56
Snowhogdahz: If you are not presented with the KDM logon screen, then you do have a video driver conflict with the current login manager.16:56
Obsidian1723luckily Ive only had that once.16:57
dahzSnowhog: when i boot, kubuntu is stuck on its loading screen, and the logon screen never shows up; however i can go in ctrl+alt+F1 and go in the console16:57
SnowhogObsidian1723: Sure, and if it were my system, I might go that route, but only after I had exhausted all other approaches at resolving the issue. ;)16:57
dahzyes, i'm not tired yet :)16:58
Snowhogdahz: Yes, then it is a video driver issue -- at the point that the login manager is trying to load.16:58
Obsidian1723Snowhog: I guess it depends. I don't do it in all cases, if I can fix something quickly, of course I do.... but my days of geeking and tweaking for hours on end or days on end to fix something? Nah. I'll just push out an image and be done with it or do like I said earlier.16:58
dahzSnowhog: which drivers should i install?16:59

athlon1ok, thanks20:19
arthurfiggishello :) i was using ubuntu up until the whole Dash/Amazon "feature" was added to Unity...would Kubuntu be a safe alternative for anyone looking to avoid it, or are there plans for kubuntu to integrate it as well?20:24
genii-aroundarthurfiggis: The shopping lens is specific to Unity desktop, it doesn't exist in Kubuntu.20:30
arthurfiggisgenii-around: ahh i see! i don't know much about it so i thought i'd ask the experts :) that's great then, my pc has an odd uefi implementation apparently so i've been having trouble getting other distro's to boot properly...sounds like kubuntu will work fine20:32
genii-aroundarthurfiggis: If you already have Ubuntu booting and running there, you can just install kubuntu-desktop and then the login screen will have Kubuntu as an option for your desktop choice20:33
arthurfiggisgenii-around: ahh okay, so you can install the meta-package and switch it out :) that's even better, i already have an ubuntu 12.10 dvd burned off (my connection is better sometimes than others, i haven't been home for the "sometimes" yet)20:39
goodtimegenii-around:  you can install unity then the kubuntu desktop20:40
goodtimeits apt-get install kde-full genii-around20:41
goodtimemight work20:41
genii-aroundgoodtime: the kubuntu-desktop package contains a suite of applications which have been selected as the default supported applications under KDE20:42
goodtimeyes i know but think about it20:43
goodtimeunity has what you need20:43
goodtimeso install the other desktop and all the unity apps are there20:44
arthurfiggisi wish i had known about uefi before i had bought my current pc, otherwise i would have bought something based on how well it booted anything -other- than windows :( what a pain...ubuntu is good because it still installs and boots fine on this system, but the dash/shopping lens issue was a big detractor20:44
goodtimebelive me thats what i do20:44
genii-aroundgoodtime: They already seem to have a working Unity desktop, etc etc20:44
goodtimethen i get bolth benifits of bolth desktops at once20:44
goodtimeso open up a terminal20:45
goodtimesudo bash20:45
goodtimepassword20:45
goodtimeapt-get install kde-full20:45
goodtimeor sudo  apt-get install kde-full20:45
goodtimeyeah sudo20:46
goodtimeshould work20:46
goodtimeplus that way you dont have to install virtualbox either ha!20:46
goodtimesaves a huge amout of time and resourses20:47
goodtimeif you do this remember to chose the plasma desktop to boot off with20:49
goodtimetherew is a little symbol next to were you type your password click it and chose witch desktop you want20:49
goodtimetheres*20:50
goodtimechoose*20:50
goodtimelol20:50
