aaron_rackspacehey all, i'm looking for anyone who would be interested in a c++11 project that I'm looking to package with an ubuntu distro. would require an understanding of BGP, syslog, and TCP sockets. project is currently alpha.03:23

FieldyI installed phpmyadmin however there's nothing that I can find related to it anywhere in /var/www. it didn't say I needed to do anything else, did I miss something?05:06

sarnoldFieldy: when I'm stuck with a "what next?" sort of feeling, I look in the /usr/share/doc/<packagename>/ directory, and if that isn't as useful as it could be, I run dpkg -L <packagename> to see what files were installed05:27

LargePrimehey, assuming a Ubuntu server with server ips bound to to it, how do i open a port on one of the ip's?06:24
sarnoldLargePrime: there's no default firewall; just have your server program bind() a socket, listen() to a port at startup, then accept connections in the main loop06:26
LargePrimeThe software is supposed to have opend a port.  but it seems not.  i scanned with nmap and it is closed06:27
sarnoldLargePrime: check with sudo netstat -nlp | grep :portnumber06:27
sarnold(-n to avoid dns, -l to show listening, -p to show program names and pids)06:27
LargePrimesarnold: how do i specify the ip?06:28
sarnoldLargePrime: most programs have a directive for that; 0.0.0.0 or * for "any", or a specific IP if you want it bound on only one address06:29
LargePrimeok i see it with the netstat command06:29
LargePrimesarnold:  I see thie correct ip and the port with the netstart, but nmap is not showing it as open when scanned06:31
sarnoldLargePrime: okay, that's a start, though it does complicate things a bit :) it's bed time for me, so I'm afraid I'll just hahve to throw you some pointers and hope one of them gets it..06:33
LargePrimeand now everything is working06:33
sarnoldLargePrime: first, make sure ...06:33
sarnoldhaha06:33
LargePrimeok did i do that?06:33
sarnoldtry to show the problem to someone else, and it goes away. every time. :D06:33
LargePrimeok it not just me06:33
sarnoldLargePrime: I wish I had a good explanation. :/ the netstat command won't change anything..06:34
LargePrimesarnold:  thanks06:38

holsteinangs: i would try and install without adding packages at installation14:27
angsit asks that step by default when I select "install ubuntu server" option on unetboot.14:35
BenyGangs: have you checked networking is ok?14:36
angssorry select "install" option.14:36
angsI selected to install it without having connection option14:36
angsif I select "install ubuntu server" on the unetboot, at a point it asks me to insert the installation CD where I am using pendrive. there is no option to select another storage.14:37

sliddjurWhat is xinetd and why would I need it?17:30
sliddjurim setting up nagios3 server and a nrpe host on another network. some guides suggests me to use xinetd17:30
RoyKsliddjur: xinetd (or inetd) is a helper to make processes not having a tcp (or udp) listener built in work over those protocols. nrpe should be able to listen to tcp without (x)inetd17:35
sliddjurRoyK: hmm ok.17:43
sliddjurmy teacher also suggested me to use two hosts on the same network17:44
sliddjurhe never told me why17:44
