submanThis may be an issue that a developer wants to look into.  I installed kubuntu-desktop under Ubuntu 12.10 and all was well.  I decided to upgrade to 13.04 Ubuntu and it went well, except for when I go to try Kubuntu.  It comes up with a message box that states:  "Cannot start D-BUS.  Can you start qdbus?"  There is an 'okay' button and when pressed takes me back to the login screen.  Any ideas or just too early to try Kubuntu in this00:20

Questhow to make ubuntu/kubuntu boot and only go to console automatically. do not load gui?00:38
DarthFrogQuest: Try removing the lightdm package.00:39
submanDoesn't grub come with an option to boot to command line?00:39
submanQuest, maybe this:  http://askubuntu.com/questions/52089/how-do-i-boot-to-a-command-line-interface-instead-of-a-gui00:41
sylvia_I'm also having a problem with getting sound through my HDMI port. I got kubuntu 12.10 and i got picture but no sound. its  a laptopits a  so theres no card and  radeon 4200 series00:46
sylvia_hello/ anybody helping tonight, I'm new to ubuntu so I don't know who else to ask.00:53
DarthFrogsylvia_: You can install the pavucontrol package and use it to direct where your sound is output.00:55
sylvia_and how do i go about that? is that the "apt m- sudo get install" thing?00:57
DarthFrogIf you're using the radeon driver, HDMI audio is disabled by default.00:57
DarthFrogsylvia_:  You could use muon as the graphical package manager or "sudo apt-get install pavucontrol" at the command line.00:58
sylvia_Darth_: does that mean I'm kinda screwed?00:58
DarthFrogsylvia_: No.00:58
sylvia_ok imma try it00:58
sylvia_Darth_: got it open, don't see anything indicationg sound01:03
DarthFrogYou've opened pavucontrol?01:05
sylvia_no actually i don't think i did, my  konsole says its installed but I don't see it in my system sections01:06
DarthFrogRun it from the command line then.  Press ALT-F2 and type "pavucontrol".01:07
DarthFrogLook at output devices.01:07
DarthFrogBut from the KMenu, it's under Applications/Multimedia.01:08
sylvia_ok I got output devices open and it says RS880 HDMI audio for port it say HDMI/display port01:11
sylvia_na  the port settingme anything else to changed it doesn't give01:12
DarthFrogPlay around with the app.01:13
sylvia_and it doesn't give any option to change port setting01:13
sylvia_ok messed with it. it shows in the audio stream that its producing sound and its not silent but theres still no sound01:20
sylvia_like its literally showing that its just going through my HDMI port but nothing is coming out01:21
sylvia_I support what ubuntu is and what it represents to the conglomerate corporations, but I've had so many hiccups with it. kinda missing the automation of windows01:25
sylvia_nad what I mean by represents is the idea of sharing ideas and not for profit thinking and helping01:26
sylvia_any other ideas anyone? This shouldn't be difficult but it turns out its tricky01:29
sylvia_is there any update for radeon?01:30

valorieevidently that is no longer used01:42
valorieused to be the way that ubuntu handled drivers01:42
valorieI guess it's directly from system settings now01:43

valorieinteresting, bazhang01:44
sylvia_ok I'm going through ubuntu-help/media but ya I'll post something. UBOTTU: i'm not a programmer I barely know what any of that meansrammer, i ba01:45
sylvia_what it means01:45
sylvia_oh wait I need to install jock-kde?01:45
valorieit might help01:46
valorieubottu is just a bot01:47
ubottuvalorie: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)01:47
valorieanyone can use it01:47
sylvia_I've been able to select the driver. I see it. below it there is a sound bar. for the port it shows that there is sound going to it I guess because for the internal audio its flat-lined. however no actual sound is coming out. so selecting the driver isn't the issue01:47
valorieoften that means that somewhere, you have a channel muted01:47
valorieare you using ubuntu, or kubuntu?01:48
valoriepavucontrol is often useful for checking everything out01:48
sylvia_ya. tried it. thats how I show sound going to the port. its at 100%01:49
valoriefor sound issues, I mean01:49
ubottuIf you're having problems with sound see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP301:49
valoriethe troubleshooting link there is really useful01:49
sylvia_I got all the formats checked off, and the mute sections are unhighlited01:50
valoriefor instance, trying with a new user often pinpoints the problem01:50
valorieI've had to work this through a few times in the last 10 years or so01:51
valorieand always use that link to work it through logically01:51
sylvia_ok ya I found out for my sound divices under my konsole it says [HDA ATI  SB] and I guess this means its an ATI driver which requires proprietary drivers. so now I gotta look in to this02:02
sylvia_thanks for all your help but I think i'm screwed02:03
valoriethere is usually an answer02:03
valorieI have an ati02:03
valorieone time I had to do a modprobe and all that jazz, but it's all doable02:04
sylvia_and you can link up to your TV?02:04
valoriemy TV is old, so no02:04
valorieif you get that deep into the troubleshooting doc, you'll see02:05
sylvia_ok thaks again for all your help.02:05
valorielooks complicated, but like everything else in linux, if you just calmly, logically follow the steps02:05
valorieit all works out02:05
sylvia_oh real quick. whats a bot?02:05
valoriein this channel (and all ubuntu chans)02:05
valorieit is a way to access a database of helpful hints and links02:06

feruzi_hi so when is the next kubuntu coming out12:49
smartboyhw_feruzi_ Next Thursday.12:51
Freddie_FreewingHello, I have a question about burning boot-able cds from .ios files. I recently rescued an old imac g3 from the trash and am trying to bypass the password screen. To do so I need an OS 9 install disk it seems, namely because even lubuntu maxes out the ram. Is there any specific procedure that I need to follow to make a boot-able cd from an .ios file that is designed for the powerpc architecture?12:58
smartboyhw_.iso file you mean?13:01
Freddie_FreewingYes, sorry about that. :)13:02
smartboyhw_Freedie_Freewing: And why are you asking about Lubuntu!?13:03
Freddie_Freewingsmartboyhw: I am currently using kubuntu to try to burn an OS9 iso to a disk using k3b. I was merely detailing the procedure that I have gone though so far. And asking if there are any procedures that I should be aware of when trying to burn a boot-able disk.13:08
smartboyhw_Freddie_Freewing: Nothing much I think.13:09
Freddie_FreewingSmartboyhw: So just write the .iso image to the disk and everything should be a-okay. I ask because I remember a time when you had to make the boot folder and nonsense like that.13:11
smartboyhw_Freddie_Freewing: I use dd.13:13
smartboyhw_That's the play-safe method.13:13

kdefcan someone help?   I want to install a debian package (64-bit) but it needs 32-bit packages22:26
kdefI forget how to do so without installing all the 32-bit packages...   I think I just need multiarch but how?22:26
kdefE: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution)." -> I don't have to do this, do I?22:27
wxlkdef: sudo apt-get -f install22:27
wxlthat will fix it22:27
kdefthat's the only way?22:28
wxlkdef: there's always another way, but that way works. :)22:28
kdefit will intall every 32-bin lib package in the world... but, I probably only need a few? :)22:30
kdef-bit not bin22:30
wxlkdef: well somehow or another it's requiring those depends.22:30
